Not Everyone‘s Happy About Bachmann’s Bonus ‘Tea Party’ SOTU Response

As we’ve pointed out, it’s not unheard of to have more than one response to the president’s State of the Union address from within the same party. Nevertheless, ever since the Tea Party Express announced that Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., would deliver her own “tea party response,” the media have speculated that the “unusual” tactic could “scramble” the GOP’s message, to be delivered by Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.
According to early reports, Bachmann’s message will focus on condemning an “explosion of government spending” in recent years. “After the $700 billion bailout, the trillion-dollar stimulus, and the massive budget bill with over 9,000 earmarks that the President signed, many of you implored Washington to please stop spending money we don’t have,” Bachmann plans to say, according to excerpts of her remarks. “But, instead of cutting, we saw an unprecedented explosion of government spending and debt at President Obama’s direction — unlike anything we have seen in the history of our country.”
Bachmann will also briefly touch on Obama’s support for a cap-and-trade energy policy and urge support for a balanced budget amendment.
The repeal of President Obama’s signature health care law will also be a topic of scrutiny. “Last week we voted to repeal ObamaCare,” Bachmann will say, “and each day going forward, we must work hard to dismantle the massive government expansion that has happened over the past two years.”
Fox News reported Tuesday that Bachmann’s online “post-game show“ has the potential to ”distract from Ryan’s fiscal-focused message and revive last year’s narrative of a GOP house divided between establishment leaders and an untamed Tea Party network tugging at its seams.”
“I think the real question is who’s really running the Republican Party?” Democratic strategist Mary Anne Marsh said Tuesday. “I mean the fact is, we may find out tonight it’s the Tea Party.” …
[T]he rebuttal-after-the-rebuttal seems to have perturbed some Republicans, who at least passively betray a hint of annoyance on the timing, even while downplaying its significance.
During a breakfast with reporters Tuesday, House Speaker John Boehner wistfully called the move “a little unusual.” …
“Whether it is through a press release, Twitter, the internet, on television, radio, via Facebook, or by other means, virtually every member of Congress will share their thoughts on the president’s State of the Union,” concurred Boehner spokesman Michael Steel, in an e-mail to FoxNews.com.
Indeed, representatives from the Tea Party Express have insisted Bachmann‘s response is not meant to overshadow Ryan’s in any way. Sal Russo, the organization’s co-founder, told Slate‘s Dave Weigel that the decision present a tea party perspective was made well in advance of the party’s plans to have Ryan deliver the GOP’s rebuttal.
“I think [Ryan] is great. The Republicans couldn’t pick a better person to make their response,” Russo said. “But we thought the Tea Party should have their own, and Bachmann is a perfect match for that. We are going to do our response after Ryan so we don’t step on his remarks. I am sure they will be hitting similar themes because Ryan has views that are closely aligned with the Tea Party.”
Sure to add to the debate, CNN has announced it will broadcast Bachmann‘s live remarks as they are streamed online via the Tea Party Express’ website.
While some political pundits debate what impact Bachmann’s remarks will have on GOP-tea party relations (and some even speculate the congresswoman is laying the groundwork for a 2012 presidential run), MSNBC Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough chose to poke fun at the Minnesota Republican:
In contrast, South Dakota Republican Congresswoman Kristi Noem — a tea party favorite in her own right — appeared on FNC Tuesday afternoon and casually shrugged off the speculation.
“I think it‘s great that she’s going to give a response,” Noem told host Neil Cavuto. “I think that she‘s going to make sure that we’re holding our president’s feet to the fire, that he doesn’t just stand up and give a really nice tug-at-your-heartstrings speech, that we‘re going to make sure in the future that he doesn’t tug at our wallet anymore,” she said.

The media treats it like it is a civil war within the GOP or some unprecedented rouge move – how soon we forget it was then Senator Barry Obama who in JAN 2008 offered his own response the then President Bush’s SOTU. There’s enough room in America for many voices.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:13pmI’m not unhappy about Bachmann giving a TeaParty response – but I think she needs to formally leave the Republican Party and tell the Congress that she is now a Tea Party representative – not an independent nor going to the other aisle – but in fact a third REAL party – the Tea Party. IF and I’m NOT Boehner (sp?), I’d remove her from any position in the Republican controlled house if she put an (R) after her name. IF she wants to give a Michelle Bachmann (R) response, and the media (any of them) want to listen – that’s fine, just about every Congressman who has any standing or reputation will be asked what they thought over the next few days or hours as the case may be. But she has NO business making it a “Tea Party” rebuttal.

Pardon me?
Marketing plays a big role in this. It’s not “can’t do” it’s “not selected to do” by the behind the scenes people. Rand Paul is doing a hell of lot of good, and his father has been doing yeoman’s work for decades, but they weren’t “selected” by the behind the scenes people to be the party front, so they’re being more or less ignored.
It is becoming almost a mirror of real life. The guys sit behind the scenes pulling the major weight of the load and the women are put in the driver’s seat and are said to be “leading” and “doing the work”.
Please understand, I like Bachmann, this isn’t a slam on her. I’m just a bit tired of the “but but but the men aren’t doing anything” crap. The hell they aren’t.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:05pmBachmann has more chops than Palin (4 years as a congresswo¬man, an attorney with a LLM in tax law), more business acumen than Palin (she holds stakes in several successful business ventures), she is a better public speaker than Palin, and she has more of a compelling family narrative than Palin (5 children, 23 foster children, no Bristol). If the tea party people get behind her, she could rise up quickly. I suggest Palin, due to the utter hatred that the left has thrown at her would be easier to defeat in an election than Bachmann.
Report Post »wodiej
Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:10pmI like them both but don’t see how Bachmann has anything on Palin. Bachmann has not been subjected to the hate that Palin has. Palin also has executive experience-Bachmann doesn’t. Why it matters how many children each of them has is beyond me. Palin and her husband also run a fishing business, Palin has brought herself up by hard work. I suspect Bachmann had some advantages Palin didn’t.

Palin‘s sound bites make it hard for her to translate to alot of people if they don’t really follow her and just see what the mainstream media will play of her.
Bachmann has the ability to bring people to her side more than Palin has been able to so far. Palin is stronger right now with the conservative base but maybe only because she has had more exposure.
Lastly, the fact that Bachmann makes Chris Matthews crazy is a definite plus in her favor.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 8:05pmThe tea party(per se) is NOT the Republican Party. It is people who get together, or network together with a similar political philosophy. This is a reminder. Bachman is clearly in line with tea party thinking as of today. A libertarian may be next years choice. People need to remember, the tea party is not a political party. It is the conscience of all the parties, the will of the people. We are united by ideal, we draw the politicians to us because we are large and powerful. Today The Republicans are the closest we have to our ideal. May not stay that way. Do NOT take us for granted.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 10:21pmThe problem many people have with the TEA Party is that it is looked at as an political party and not a political movement. They are afraid the Republican party will be torn apart by the differing views of “Mainstream” Republicans and Republican who favor the ideals of the TEA Party Movement. The fact of the matter is you can be registered as a member of the Republican Party and still follow the tennants of the Tea Party movement. This is a vital point that I believe can not be stressed enough.

Well, my guess is that the people on the GOP side who attack Bachmann are, through demonstrated voting records, RINO’s almost exclusively. I’ve yet to see a libertarian-Republican like Ron Paul attack her. So it has nothing to do with “they’re the ugly cousin”. We’re 70% of the nation bub, we invite *them* to our events now and only if we feel like it, not the other way around.

Bachmann’s family farm received $251,973 in federal subsidies between 1995 and 2006. The farm had been managed by Bachmann’s recently deceased father-in-law and took in roughly $20,000 in 2006 and $28,000 in 2005, with the bulk of the subsidies going to dairy and corn. Both dairy and corn are heavily subsidized — or “socialized” — businesses in America (in 2005 alone, Washington spent $4.8 billion propping up corn prices) and are subject to strict government price controls.

However, I’d like to see them reduce that number to 18% of GDP to help PUSH the progressives into releasing the regulatory stranglehold on the private sector to get the economy growing again. If the progressives/liberals want to SPEND money, and we all know they love to do that, they’ll have to let the economy grow through the private sector.
Even Germany has hit a new low on their unemployment rate at 7%. They also had economic growth of 3.4%(not sure of the exact number) in 2010, WITHOUT a stimulus spending bill.

Posted on January 25, 2011 at 10:47pmWe have been told for years that the Republicans can’t create a “big tent” environment. With the Republicans plus the Tea Party, this looks like alot bigger tent than the Libs can present with their 20% of the population.
That is what scares the crud out of them.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 2:13amI think most Tea Partiers should be unhappy that she‘s speaking since she’s just shown the world who didn‘t already know her that she’s clueless. I had no idea who she was (barring hearing her name here and there.) By the time she was done, my hand was firmly affixed to my forehead while it shook slowly back and forth. What a cretin.
The teaparty seriously needs to get someone who isn’t a dolt to take the torch…. and fast.

foxnews.com has the Bachmann linked to their lead page… though it is a bit hard to stumble into. A matter of fact, it gets a left handed point, by the left handed lefty that we wish was simply left out. Follow the left hand to ‘Video’ and then the end of that line to ‘GOP Response.‘ Now that is where it gets tricky cause ya gots to take it as ’GOP Responses.‘ Click on ’GOP Response’ which features Ryan but if you look below his mug, you will see a number of other responses, Michelle being among them. Right now I also have fox on catching the reruns. Greta is up and I believe she is going to play some of Bachmann later.
To say the lest, the tea party has not gone away and some historian in a few years is going to do a paper on how much the tea party impacted the 2011 State of the Union. He cannot join us, but he can no longer ignore it. I am loving it, as he deploys the jargon of free enterprise and tea party to say he going to keep doing his same old, more socialism. He is a skit.
Bachmann uses the simple bar graph to burn historical truth towards the momentum of 12.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 2:56amExactly, of course the Socialists aren’t going to like it, who cares what they think anyways, and the RINO’s might not like it but they need to wise up that they are exposed and old news, the Tea Party is not going away and will keep growing stronger as more people get informed about what is really going on and start getting active and involved in the future of their country.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 7:47amThis is another example of the leftists media trying to confuse and trap the dimwitted RHINO’s into playing their game. It seems the RHINO’s are the same kids who pulled the fire alarm in school because the “cool kids” told them to. Everytime a RHINO talks, all I hear is: “Have you seen my baseba….er weiner?”

When the “elites” figure out that they work for us, not the other way around, some sanity may prevail in Washingtongrad. If it doesn’t we can, and will, do what is necessary to regain control over these people.

Posted on January 26, 2011 at 10:25amWhy don‘t we get rid of parties and become ’We The People” with different beliefs and ideas. There is good Dems and good Repubs but there is some bad Dems and bad Repubs. Some people do not like the Tea Party because people are awaking! Some people will attack Mrs. Bachman not for what she says, lets have a debate but personal attacks which women’s groups should be outraged. If people can not win the Common Sense argument they resort to name calling. That’s grown-up?
