Not Ready for ‘Till Death Do You Part’? Mexico Considering 2-Year Marriage ‘Contracts’

Not Ready for Till Death Do You Part? Mexico Considering 2 Year Marriage ContractsIf you’re not quite ready for the idea of committing yourself to one person for the rest of your life, you might want to consider a move to Mexico City. Leftist lawmakers there are hoping to reform the civil code to loosen the “permanent” idea of tying the knot — with temporary marriage licenses.

The idea is to help newlyweds avoid messy divorces if they decide their marriage isn’t working. Instead of signing on for a lifetime together, couples could decide the length of their commitment, with the minimum contract being two years. If the couple was still happy after their allotted time together, they could simply renew the license.

“The proposal is, when the two-year period is up, if the relationship is not stable or harmonious, the contract simply ends,” Assemblyman Leonel Luna, the co-author of the proposed bill, told Reuters.

The contracts would contain provisions for how to handle children and property in the event of a split so “you wouldn’t have to go through the tortuous process of divorce,” he said.

According to Reuters, about half of Mexico City marriages end in divorce, usually within the first two years.

Luna is a member of the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution, which holds the most seats in the 66-member body. He said the proposal is gaining support and he expects a vote by the end of the year.

Mexico City legalized same-sex marriage in late 2009, the first Latin American city to do so.

The Catholic Church strongly criticized the proposed change. Mexico is the country with the world’s second-largest Catholic population, after Brazil.

“This reform is absurd. It contradicts the nature of marriage,” said Hugo Valdemar, spokesman for the Mexican archdiocese. “It’s another one of these electoral theatrics the assembly tends to do that are irresponsible and immoral.”

This is just another great idea from the smartest country on the planet. Make it illegal to own a firearm to protect the citizens. (40,000 dead in 6 years) Bastardize marriage to save families and personal happiness. (how many more unwanted kids can my tax money handle) What does it matter to them, as long as they can continue to leech off of the USA. can anyone out there taste the sarcasm in my voice?

Doesn’t surprise me that Mexico is shooting down the institution of marriage, everything else is getting shot down, mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, uncles, aunts, cousins, dogs, just about everything mostly.

i actually kinda like the idea. marriage is a business contract..always was. with so many divorces why just renew it every so often instead? there is nobody here that can really say ’til death do we part’ and keep that promise. people do fall out of love..or get married for the wrong reasons. this can help minimize the bad judgement. and infact i think it would strengthen marriage. if someone is trapped they dont care. but when they care and they know they can loose that person after 2 yrs or anytime..then they work that much harder to keep the relationship going or it ends as it was ment to.

It might not cut down on bad decisions because now it’s just easier to get out of the marriage than it was before.

You would have to have proof that the other person cheated and I think viable proof would be kind of hard to come by.

marriage already is state sponsered whoredom. it has never been anything else no matter what the romance novels say. it was used to bind 2 families, kingdoms, countries together. love and god really had little to do with it. dont believe me? then why were all marriages arranged esp the ‘important ones’ …the only difference is how long you pay the ho for? if you truly want marriage to only be about love then u MUST allow gay marriage and you MUST eliminate ALL tax and financial benefits associated with getting marriage. no state licence, just ‘love ’ and 2 peeps promising to love eachother

The Feminist movement has made marriage a mockery. Now women empowered with a sense of their own divine providence abort fetuses without the consent of the husband, and after the brief honeymoon wears out they become nagging shrews.
The Feminist movement is literally killing off the European community. In Catholic Italy alone, the population is shrinking because unlike the old days, women abort or choose not to have a child after marriage. and even during a divorce, courts across the western world take the side of the wife where she gets custody of the child or children and alimony to boot, including half of all the estate even if the estate was created by the Husband.
Now with the acceptance of the Homosexual lifestyle more and more men are turning to the companionship of other men than endure the hell of an ungrateful, frustrated nagging wife and through her guidance, ungrateful father hating children.

You can already get a marriage anulled if it is done within 12 months..this just extends it to 24 months. I see no problem with it for others, however, I feel it is wrong on many levels.

I agree with you! This is nothing but a mess. If someone doesn’t want to be committed to a marriage for more than 2 years why get married in the first place? As it is people have already corrupted marriage with shacking up, sex outside of marriage, affairs, and getting divorced because they realize that marriage isn’t the fairytale they believe it will be. Marriage is already temporary; some don’t even last 2 years!

The only people I see who will be using these 2 year marriages will be commitmentphobes and those who are marrying for the security of having a sexual partner or possibly trying to benefit financially from a marriage. These “marriages” won’t stop cheating, lower rates of STDs, improve the odds of a relationship lasting, or etc.

I wonder if the Muslim influence in the cartels have worked there way to the government. They have quickie marriages and divorce with nothing but saying so. Get a quickie marriage to get some action and then divorce in the morning to remain pure as they did not commit adultery. You can’t commit adultery if you are married even if it is a second wife and only lasts a few hours.

The erosion of marriage is what the “LEFT” wants. Destroy the family you destroy one of the fundamental principles that bonds us together as a society. No Family = No Responsibility = No Ambition = No Desire to Succeed = No Capitalism = No Freedom = Government Control. You might as well be a slave to the government = Communism!!!!!!! Wake up America we are being attacked. Top down, bottom up, inside out. This is the agenda of the Left Progressive Movement. Destroy us from within. This is one of the reasons that we marry in our faith for All Time and Eternity. We must be committed to our families forever.

(A proper) Government has not right to engage in the voluntarily spiritual decisions of consenting adults.

Government recognized marriage or unions is nothing but a form of creating sub-classes of citizenry, benefitting or punishing various people for various reasons.

My definition of marriage is completely different than the governments. In mine all you need is God, not a pastor or a piece of paper, to join a man and a woman together forever. Adam and Eve only needed God. Since it’s a special occasion, I might want the church, friends, and family involved but why would I ever want the State involved. Oh yeah taxes, that handy little stick or carrot tool the government uses to influence/make you do what they want you to. I don‘t really care what the government does with ’what they call marriage’ (also why I don’t really care about “gay marriage”) they’re two totally different things to me. No matter what government does it wont stop God from acknowledging or not acknowledging two individuals whose faith/spirit he binds together.

This is utterly pointless and a prime example of overreaching government.

Let’s make a law to compensate for the idiocy and irresponsibility of our citizens! Brilliant! Maybe you should, you know, get to know who your partner is before committing to a partner with marriage?
