‘Not Very Christian’: MSNBC’s Bashir & His Panel Slam the Catholic Church’s Response to the Contraceptive Mandate

Martin Bashir Panel on MSNBC Slams Cardinal Dolan & the Catholic Church on the MandateMSNBC’s Martin Bashir has plenty of opinions when it comes to faith and politics. His typically-leftist perspective on these issues is often corroborated by a panel comprised of like-minded individuals who tend to agree with his every whim. Tuesday’s show proved no different when Bashir delved into the Catholic Church and its ongoing debate with the Obama administration over the infamous contraceptive mandate.

(Related: MSNBC‘s Bashir Slams Mormonism’s ‘Racially-Segregated’ History & Defends Obama Against Black Liberation Theology Claims)

The segment commenced with clips showing Cardinal Timothy Dolan weighing in on the ongoing battle and the potential service cuts that Catholic leaders may make as a result of the regulatory change. Additionally, Dolan also maintained that the church didn’t want this fight and that leaders simply hope “to be left alone to do the work that Jesus asked” of them.

“If these mandates kick in, we’re going to find ourselves faced with a terribly difficult decision as to whether or not we can continue to operate,” Dolan said. “As part of our religion — it’s part of our faith that we feed the hungry, that we educate the kids, that we take care of the sick. We’d have to give it up, because we’re unable to fit the description and the definition of a church given by — guess who — the federal government.”

Martin Bashir Panel on MSNBC Slams Cardinal Dolan & the Catholic Church on the Mandate

Bashir, of course, wasn‘t buying into Dolan’s commentary. The television host responded by bringing up the $2.9 billion that Catholic Charities received in federal funding back in 2010 to showcase the tight fiscal relationship that exists between the government and the church.

“They don’t seem to bristle at the hand of government when it comes to money, do they?,” Bashir later commented.

Throughout the segment, Mother Jones’ David Corn, the Washington Post’s Jonathan Capehart and Democratic strategist Krystal Ball joined in to share their opposition to the church’s views on the mandate.

(Related: University of Notre Dame, Dioceses Sue Obama Admin Over Contraceptive Mandate)

“There‘s no satisfying them on this issue and clearly they’ve decided to use this threat as an attempt to essentially bully the president and the administration into getting their way,” Ball claimed.

Corn, though, had some of the harshest commentary regarding the church’s handling of the situation.

“It strikes me as just not very Christian, if I can say so, to get out there and say, ‘We will not be providing services if you force us to do these things — or if there’s a mandate,” Corn said. ”Would Jesus take his fish and a loaf and go home?”

Jesus would probably remove his sandals and walk away after he turned over the tables in front of the people who were handing out government mandate pro life and abortion brochures on the steps of any given church.

So, to recap: Bashir’s idea of “being Christian” is for Christians to abandon their understanding of Scripture and the commandments of Christ himself, and accept the mandates of people who neither understand nor believe Scripture and show no outward commitment to God. Being a “good Christina”means not being a Christian at all.

Is there anyone who isn‘t forced to do something they don’t want to do by the government? i know i am. The Word of God says there will be two beasts in the end time and they will fight against each other, and it also explains the two beasts. False government and false religion. Finally the false religion is starting to rear it’s ugly head against the false government which also runs contrary to the laws of the True God.

i just don’t understand how these so called churches are allowed to exist? most break the very commandments they teach. just like the catholic church worshiping the virgin Mary. does it not say in the ten commandments to have no other God.and not make any graven image? how about the rest of the churches? how many so called Christians teach their children about Santa clause? isn’t that a lie? thou shalt not bear false witness? what of the so called preachers that cheat on their wives or have sins of the flesh? and just how many con men preacher are out there with their hand out looking for cash? How are the masses supposed to believe in teachings when false prophets are free to victimize without recourse? just like the very popular King James translation. even though his intentions for the translation was a noble cause he did not believe in the teachings of the very book that bares his name since homosexuality is an abomination and he was a known bi-sexual? but people are supposed to just have blind faith? if you believe in the words of our creator and his son. and his promise of a paradise on earth, then why do we let these so called preachers continue? or elect evil men to govern our lives and take away our liberty, freedom, truth and justice from our garden?

You may be right, because He is Jesus Christ and not you. He told you to“ GET THE PLANK OUT OF YOUR EYE BEFORE REMOVING THE PLANK OUT OF SOMEONE ELSE EYE”. Jesus Christ also told you, “THOSE WITHOUT SIN CAST THE FIRST STONE”. And I believe you are just as much a sinner as anyone else. Anything to keep the focus off of the real problem, which is the infringement of religious freedom. It didn’t happen with this mandate. It has been gradually eroded by all of the court decisions favoring athiests’ rights, banning prayer in schools, etc. The Catholic Church has to take a stand on this, or we will no longer be America. Remember, Obama, over the millenia, many dictators have wagged their little weenies at the Catholic Church, and have been demolished. Be very careful when you try to confront the Church.

True Christians follow Jesus, and the Bible tells us that just as Jesus did, we are to love the sinner, but we are never to love the sin. Martin wants Christians to kind of love the sin too, and that folks is measure of his morality and his lack of understanding as to who Jesus really was, and is, to the Christian. @NHWINTER –

Well said. In order for these guys to be able to fully control society, they need to eliminate/diminish religious freedoms – which allow loyalty to and dependence on God rather than government.

I am a Mormon, but I firmly stand side by side with the Catholics and every other religion in defense of religious freedom!

Please read this excellent speech on religions uniting to protect all of our religious freedoms. Yes, it was given by a member of the Twelve Apostles from my church, but it was given at Chapman University School of Law. His credentials to speak on such a topic are impeccable (Elder Oaks is a graduate of Brigham Young University (1954) and of the University of Chicago Law School (1957). He practiced law and taught law in Chicago. He was president of Brigham Young University from 1971 to 1980 and a justice of the Utah Supreme Court from 1980 until his resignation in 1984 to accept his calling to the apostleship. He has been an officer or member of the board of many business, educational, and charitable organizations.)

It is time for Christians to set aside their doctrinal differences and understand what is happening.

Religion is an impediment to the new society Obama and the Progressives are trying to create.

I saw on Pub-D-Hub a movie from the 30′s (I think) portraying the ideal community of the future. In it, the church was replaced with a school as the center of activity.

We have differences in our interpretation of the Bible – some even have additional scriptures. The Left is aware of our tenacity to defend our separate denominations and they are using that to divide us.

We must recognize what is happening, put aside our differences and unite to defeat this agenda.

You believe what you want and allow me the same privilege. We are not enemies because we differ on whether priests can be married, Saturday or Sunday, wine or grape juice, sprinkled or dunked. We have a common thread of believing that Jesus is the Christ. Let’s build on that foundation, for we are told it is a foundation that cannot fail.

Unless we do that, we are in danger of loosing our freedoms.

      We are all Catholics now.

This is hateful. They clearly have no understanding of the Catholic Church. If they wanted to be really fair they should have had someone from the Church to explain. Instead they spin it the way they want to those who have no clue on Church beliefs. First of all birth control is not a health issue. It prevents pregnancy. Last I checked, having a baby is a gift, not a disease. This is easily preventable by refraining from sex. But I guess that can’t happen because we are out of control animals with no free will when it comes to sex. Second, this is not really about birth control but freedom of religion.

Yes very well said indeed. Monkey DNA is 99% identical to human DNA. One thing that separates us from monkeys is self control (free will) Liberals (and even some “christians”) have worked very hard to convince people thatwe are just animals and it isn’t possible to control our sexual urges, that there is no way anyone can remain chaste and that we are all slaves to our flesh (in bondage) Some “Christians” even teach that things like artificial contraception, sterilization, IVF, masturbation and even abortion are not only necessary but in some cases are the “christian” thing to do. There is a (very dangerous) trend emerging where “christians” are compartmentalizing their faith in Jesus and saying that we can follow Jesus and still be in favor of things like abortion and gay marriage because our “politics” are separate from our faith and we are already “saved”. It’s good to be a Christian in church but even more important to be a Christian OUTSIDE of Church. Not everyone who calls Lord Lord will enter the Kingdom but ONLY those who DO the will of the Father in Heaven. As Christians we have to ask ourselves honestly if things like masturbation, gay sex, sterilization,IVF, contraception and abortion lead us closer to the Lord? As Christians are we supposed to do everything possible to live for this life or lay down our lives for Jesus in the hope of resurrection? Lord have mercy Eph 5:3-12.

I wonder if Bashir would tell a Muslim he wasn‘t being Islamic if he didn’t bomb somebody. To tell a Church that when they uphold what they believe to be the interpretation of Scripture that they are not Christian is to suppos Bashir knows what a Christian is. I don’t believe the Bible forbids birth control in the Church; but, I know it forbids murder of babies. When we get to the point we allow liberals to determine what is religious enough to be afforded Constitutional protection we are in deep trouble.

Working in hospice I have seen both die and it is not pleasant. They are angry at God whom they do not know for something that happened in their life. They do not understand that as Christians we cannot and will not comprimise our principals. We know love because we know God. We must be of strong character and show them love like God loves us but not give into pressure and stand for what God is against. We are not perfect and stumble in our faith daily but Christ is there to pick us up and put us back on the path that one day will lead us home.

Churches (the earthly, denominational local groups of believers) need to get out of bed with the government. My own Baptist denomination is being silenced by the tax exempt status. It is time to just pay the full taxes and be free to preach God’s Word.

This goes for ALL of us throughout secular life. Start turning down the entitlements and exemptions and government would no longer hold any sway over anyone.

Actually the Catholic position (or any Christian for that matter) concerning Social Justice bears no resemblance to the Marxist postion of Social Justice,

The Christian ideal of social justice is basically a just society cares about the “least of these” through personally attending to those needs (Good Samaratan story for example) or through pooling the resources of a group of individuals through the corporate structure of a body of believers (The Church). This is called charity and is done in response to a heart connection to God.

In a less strident form, I am a Catholic and did not vote for Obama. It was clear that his character was lacking. A lot of Catholics voted for Obama because they are union members.

      Kay
You are wrong. My kids go to Catholic school. It is nearly word for word that:
      Society makes people poor.
      Charity is diddly squat.
Therefore the poor have a RIGHT to TAKE IT from the rich.
      Wake up!

While the marxists have infiltrated some congregations of the church, (the Pope fought valiantly to remove that from the So American body and works to do so in the rest of the body) The over riding position of Catholism and the broader Christian church is not the marxist definition of Social Justice

      Kay
Why not just call it “charity” then as it is called in the Bible? “Social Justice” is not in the Bible, but “everyone loves a cheerful giver” is.
SJ has a strong, negative connotation where people are forced to compy rather than people being loving and compassionate toward others.

      Hi
Not everything you hear should be taken at face value. A deeper look into the numbers from the 08 election show the numbers are tainted with race and immagration issues:
Support for Obama in 2008 (US Census Bureau)
      53% of all voters
      94% Black Protestants
89% Black Catholic (Vote based more on race than religion)
      75% unaffiliated
      71% Other minority Protestant
71% Other minority Catholic (Hispanics were not going to vote for McCain)
      52% less-observant white Catholic
      55% less-observant white protestant
      41% observant white catholic
      41% observant white protestant

Observant refers to voters who report attending religious service at least once a week.

”Would Jesus take his fish and a loaf and go home?”

If he was forced to sign a contract with the devil in order to be able to hand out those fishes and loaves, yes he would.

You have to remember, if he really is a Christian, he is still a progressive first.

So when does the Obama administration tell the Jews they must now eat pork? The First Amendment to the Constitution states that the federal government SHALL MAKE NO LAW to the establishment of religion or prevent the FREE EXERCISE THEREOF. The Catholics believe certain things to be SIN and therefore cannot go against what they believe to be the foundations of their faith. Sorry Barry, for a constitutional “perfesser” you really are stupid!

Martin, He actually chose to be crucified rather than buckle to the will of the Jewish leaders. He could have recanted everything and avoided it. So in a sense, he did take his fish and a loaf and go home to His Heavenly Father.

tru dat, Gonzo…like He said, no one had the power to take His life; he willingly laid it down-even (especially?) for those who curse and revile Him
