Now Obama Releases Incredible Ad Suggesting Romney Paid No Taxes

Just when we thought the White House had backed away from Harry Reid’s wild, and unsubstantiated, claim that Mitt Romney hasn’t paid taxes for the last 10 years, the Obama camp has released an incredible ad suggesting the same thing.

In a new spot that is specifically endorsed by Barack Obama, an ominous voice wonders if Romney has paid below the 13.9 percent tax rate he claims, and at one point wonders if he’s paid “0%.“ It then goes on to say ”we don’t know” and that it’s time for Romney to “come clean.”

Forget for now that the ad as it stands is baseless. Instead, We’ll let the Glenn Beck radio crew debunk it using sheer absurdity. Here’s them mocking the claim when it first came out:

But the Reid story doesn’t end there. On Thursday afternoon HuffPo ran a story citing a top Reid aide saying that the source for the Romney tax claim happened to be a Republican, which sent the left salivating. But that claim quickly changed:

“This person is an investor in Bain Capital, a Republican also, and somebody who has been dealing with Romney’s company for a long, long time and he has direct knowledge of this,” said Reid aide Jose Parra, referring to Romney’s tax returns.

UPDATE: 7:08 p.m. – Parra now says he doesn‘t know whether Reid’s source is Republican. In an email to HuffPost, he wrote:

“I do not know the party affiliation of the source, how long he invested with Bain, or his relationship to Romney beyond the fact that he was an investor with Bain Capital, as Senator Reid has previously stated.”

As for the “Son of Boss” suggestion, Business Insider has more:

The ad, “Son of Boss,” pivots off of a new CNN op-ed from tax lawyer Peter C. Canellos and tax expert Edward D. Kleinbard, which raises questions about Romney’s involvement in, and awareness of, Marriott International‘s use of Son of Boss tax shelters as a member of the hotel conglomerate’s board of directors during the 1990s.

As the op-ed points out, Romney is close personal friends with the Marriott family, and joined the Marriott board of directors in 1993. He served as the board’s chairman of the audit committee from 1993 until 1998, the same time period in which Marriott used the “Son of BOSS,” tax shelter, a transaction that was later labeled “abusive” by the IRS. According to Canellos and Kleinbard, Romney, as audit chair, would have been required to approve this transaction.

The new Obama campaign ad attempts to this alleged involvement into Romney’s refusal to release his federal income tax returns, suggesting that the returns would show Romney was similarly willing to use tax shelters in to boost his personal finances.

The fact that the campaign would stoop to such a level in the ad is curious, especially considering they are embroiled in another ad scandal involving a super PAC‘s ad insinuating Romney killed a steel worker’s wife. As time marches on, more evidence points to the fact that the administration knew much more about the man in that ad — a man they used in their own spot — than they are admitting to. Which begs the question: Why?

    Again, I thought you Romney people said this story would be gone soon because it had no legs. No the fact of the matter is until Romney releases them or grows some balls and calls out Obama on the things he hasnt released this issue will not go away.

    Why attack Obama when you can play defensive to the worst president in US history.

      Funny, I thought the IRS was a controlled by the Federal Government and not Bain Capital. If there was anything at all illegal in Romney’s tax returns EVERYONE would know by now. Romney used the tax laws to his advantage just like every other single person in this country. Show me one person who pays more to the IRS than they must do by law and I’ll show you a liar.

      Lets face it negative ads work. Plus Obama is a thug, look at how he has won ALL of his elections before President, He destroyed his opponents legally but in a despicable way. The guy is the work person we have had as president. No doubt he hates the American way. We will be fools to relect him. Even if a shoe (to quote Glenn Beck) is up against him, it should win (in a “real” world). I am hoping that despite all the polls when people go into the voting booth they will vote opposite to what most polls say, or else God help us.

I am waiting for the press to vet Obama, after they do this, then we can look at Romney’s tax records

      Getting beyond the obvious Truth With An Agenda here. Let‘s first consider that the ad references Romney’s response to if he ever paid less than 13.5%, to which even he said that he didn’t know and would have to check. And second, the ad does not reference 10 years. The ad is on the money in terms of what Independent voters like myself want to know. Did Romney utilize tax loopholes, gimmicks, offshore strategies to reduce his tax burden below what the average middle class family pays. Tax gimmicks, loopholes and offshore strategies he has never come out against. It is a question of character, ethics and citizenship. His statement last week that I have paid taxes was purposely vague as it did not specify income taxes. Given his multiple private residences we all know he paid real estate taxes. That is not the question on the table. A question that can only be answered by him releasing his taxes. So enough about how terrible individuals asking the question are. Time for Mitt to put up and his followers to shut up until he does that.

      I dont think Romney did anything illegal. I do believe through loop holes he paid very little tax. The problem is Romney could have released this stuff and put it to bed. Instead we are still seeing articles two weeks later. This is not going to go away till he addresses it.

      Romney can get release them and get back to attacking Obama or he can run from it and hope it goes away.

      Either way, Romney has been and will go down as one of the worst candidates in GOP history.

      That seems far more important to know, than if Romney’s accountants are using lawful tax deductions that all the rich people use with no questions, because the law allows it.

      Why do you spread false rumors?

      In truth, the first $250,000 in profit from the sale of a personal residence won’t be taxed, or the first $500,000 in the case of a married couple. The tax falls on relatively few — those with high incomes from other sources and it is only on the profit. Very few married couples have a profit of half a million on their homes. Please check FactCheck for more details on these rumors.

      If politicians wern’t carrer politicians, Good Old Harry Reid would have passed a law years ago stating all tax loopholes are null and void. Remember when Nancy Polussie became Majority Speaker and she was going to drain the Swamp! Well right off the bat, 7 of Obamas selections for Zsars had tax problems and 6 had to decline and the country couldn’t survive without TURBO Timmy. Nancy couldn‘t put the plug back in fast enough before it was found out Charlie Rangel hadn’t paid taxes on his rental property in Purato Rico and some slum lord apts he had in DC. Charlie wrote the Tax Code. Once these carrer politicians get in they find out how rich they can get using current tax loopholes. We need a frderal law limiting them to 8 years in office.       I hate it when people who know nothing about tax law try to educate people on it. The $250,000 number includes all income in a year. So if you make $100,000 a year and sell your home and make $150,000 on it you pay the tax. The $500,000 thing for married couples is simply not true. And it is on all “unearned revenue”, investment sales and rental income and such. It is not inflation adjusted, so like the AMT will hit most Americans in a few years with the way we are printing money. This is a tax on retired folks. People who bought their house years ago for next to nothing and now want to downsize. It will also hit folks who had to move and could not sell their home in this market, so turned it into a rental to wait for a better market. Now it is no longer your primary home more of the sale price is taxable. There are so many HIDDEN taxes in Obamacare it is rediculous. 22 new taxes in all and many of them are on medical equipment and devises – how is this going to help bring down health care costs. And THERE IS NO LEGAL WAY THAT ROMNEY DID NOT PAY TAXES, THERE ARE NO “LOOPHOLES” THAT WOULD ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN! He would be in jail. Romney needs to call a press conference and say “I have nothing to hide, I have done nothing illegal.       I screwed up my taxes in 2010 having to do with an IRA contribution/rollover. Dumb mistake, but a mistake nonetheless. This May I recieved a notice of the mistake and had to pay an additional $1400. I make about $80k/year right now and certainly wouldn’t be considered a “big fish” on the IRS’s radar.

      If Mitt Romney had done anything illegal (or even made a mistake) on his taxes, the IRS — sicced on him by BUO, DoJ, etc –would have caught it. Do you honestly think that the IRS HASN’T been ordered to comb through his tax returns for the last 10-20 years!?!?!?! If you don’t believe that, then not only is your head in the sand, but it’s also somehow up your butt, too.

      @JRook People like you don‘t deserve answers to those alleged questions you have because you don’t even understand that the capital gains tax is 15% and that given that Romney’s income for the last 20 years has been SOLELY capital gains, his maximum tax rate is 15% to begin with and when he gives $3 + million a year to charity that is going to further reduce his effective tax rate by a heck of a lot. And that isn’t even getting into what you call “loopholes” but people who actual read & understand the tax code call deductions. You know that mortgage interest deduction everyone who owns a house taxes? That’s a “loophole” to you. Or the student loan interest deduction? Same thing. It is apparent from your alleged “concerns” about Romney‘s tax returns that you don’t know the first thing about the tax code –heck, you probably don’t even file income taxes — so you don’t deserve ANY answers as it is apparent you will deliberately misunderstand, distort & lie about what is in them as you already doing with his 2010 returns. You want to know about Romney’s financial information — he has released hundreds of pages in tax returns & financial disclosure statements (which actually show more because they show all assets, not just income like tax returns) all the way back to 2002.       From the IRS tax updates I get every year…
      Starting in 2013, a 3.8% medicare tax will be assessed on all unearned revenue (except S Corp income) on couples who have an AGI over $250,000 and surviving spouces (so another death tax) and single folks with AGI over $200,000. Unearned revenue is home sales gains, rental income, investment income and in some cases retirement income. All of your income is factored into your AGI – so if you own a small business that shows a on paper gain of $150,000, you make $30,000 your spouse makes $20,000 and you sell your house for a $50,000 gain you pay $1,900.00 in taxes on the sale of your house. And if you have investment income or rental income and the sale of your house puts you over the $250,000 threshold all that income is then taxed the 3.8% as well. This is in addition to any capital gains and federal withholding taxes you already pay. Sales of investment properties will take the biggest hit since the IRS requires you to depreciate them each year reducing the basis and increasing the gain at the time of sale. And once again there is no inflation adjustment in the bill so if house prices skyrocket (like gold and other assets) you could very well be stuck paying this tax. Don’t believe the hype this is DIRECTLY FROM MY IRS TAX UPDATES! Most of the other taxes start in 2014. But starting next year health insurance mustbe reported on your W2.

      I did find that the tax is not on gain on your primary residence but that the gain on your primary residence can put you over the $250,000 threshold, so that other investments are subject to this tax. These investments include interest, dividend, royalties, annuities, rents, and sales of assets.

      Reid and this ad never suggest the Romney didn’t file with the IRS, just that he might not have paid any income tax. It’s hardly an attack to ask Romney to show at least as many years of tax returns as Pres. Obama. Many prominent Conservatives, including Ron Paul, think that he should release them.

      Still, even if Romney used legal means to pay little to no income taxes, it won’t look good to the millions of struggling Americans, and that is a huge problem for the Conservatives.

    I find this question absolutely interesting coming from an Re-Election Team that prior to this couldn’t answer the most basic fundemental issue every citizen of any country gets asked.
    May I see your “Birth Certificate”?
    What do we know about President Obama?
    Well, we do know that this particular President has closed every avenue of records dealing with his past historical submissions. The people cannot see his past school records, his past teaching or his employment records. Everything aligned with the past Obama as a person is off limits.
    On the other hand, the liberal media have had a field day digging dirt or any commentary from potential candidates running opposition to the Democrats. We know more about conservative candidates than even the candidate knows about themselves. How is it that Obama walks without anything about him.
    I’d say in any debate, lay it out in front of Obama, on live TV. Pull out your wallet and show your birth certicicate, have a friend pull out a cart full of tax returns and drop it right in front of Obama. Now pal, here’s mine. What do you got to trump it?
    Put up or shut up.
    I really don’t think the Obama Re-Election Team has any real substantial issue to debate or run on. So smearing Romney is their only avenue to go with. Pretty sad really. Four years in office and Obama still won’t accept his own responsibilities.

      I think that Obama has had his college records sealed because he was a foreign aid student through most; if not all, of his college years; which would make him illegal to be president. I believe that there are many other politicians that surround Obama that know this and there lies a possible, potential conspiracy scenario. We would of course have to accept the possibility that there are corrupt politicians; which we know that to be for certain. Most voters that support Obama have inherited America, our Constitution, our freedom and our liberties; without sacrifice, and I think that is why they squander it on bribes from Obama. People are taking the number; people would rather be lazy freeloaders than work. Our society has grown dysfunctional because of Atheists, the ACLU, gay rights, etc. ~ tearing down the fabric and foundation of our great country. If Obama wins re-election so be it ~ people have to find out for themselves that big government and Socialism don’t work. If Obama is re-elected we’ll just have to hope that there is enough of America left to salvage; as Obama won’t leave much left of the America we have now. Obama is a bald-faced liar, a fraud and he hates America. My vote is committed to keeping America as a free republic ~ the only country of its kind. My vote is committed to Mitt Romney.

      The Karl Rove Dirty Tricks Team has honed the Republican propaganda. Republicans send each other via email an endless number of nonsense stories about Obama being a Muslim, about Obama being a Marxist, about Obama being a Manchurian Candidate turning America over to the New World Order or the United Nations, or to some other dastardly plotting organization. But never is Obama accused of turning the US over to Wall Street, the military/security complex, or Israel.

      There is never any citation or source for the accusations in the emails. None are needed, because the words are what the Republicans want to hear. Ask them why Obama would be killing Muslims in seven countries if he was a Muslim, or why Wall Street and the military/security complex would put a Marxist in the White House, and they turn purple with rage. Just by asking the obvious questions instead of joining in the denunciations, a person confirms the propaganda that America is threatened by Obama dupes who won’t stand up for the country.
      He is not a fraud as he was elected fairly and is 100% a US citizen and is also a good leader, but I don’t think his presidency has been more then fair

      He ran for president in 2008 (and 2004, I think) and did not show his tax returns to the American public. When Sen. McCain vetted him for the VP position in 2008, Romney gave his office 20+ years of tax info. While McCain has come out saying that there wasn‘t anything illegal with Romney’s taxes, which by the way Reid has never stated that there was, McCain has been very silent in these recent turn of events with the public asking Romney to show his taxes. Some are speculating that his silence might mean that there may be things in his taxes that wouldn‘t look good for Romney’s campaign. Before that, Romney ran for gov. of Mass,, and he also refused to show his taxes then. Over the past decade and more, Romney has shown the American public only 1 year of taxes, with a commitment to release this coming year’s. Why is it unreasonable for the American public to demand that Romney show at least as many years of taxes as Pres. Obama, who has shown 10+ years?

    Considering all of the indirect taxes, Romney has likely paid more in taxes than BO will ever earn in wages.

      I retired almost a year ago, so it has given me the opportunity to spend a great deal of time just sitting in various places and striking up conversations (on purpose) with total strangers. The first thing I learned: AMERICANS ARE AS DUMB AS A BRICK.

      You think these man/student/person on the street interviews reveal how little people know, you haven’t seen anything, Trust Me.

      I sometimes go home and want to CRY, I hate to see a grown man CRY.

      And the very sad part is; some of these people are related to me, like I mean son and daughter relation, aunts and uncles relation. They can tell you everything and anything that affects them that FaceBook, Twitter, Google or Apple has done to affect their lives or changes they have made to their systems.

      But, they can’t tell you the first thing about their COMPANY POLICIES, COMPANY RULES, City government, County Government, State government, or Federal government. It makes you want to CRY, CRY I say.

    What is the point ? Can anyone please tell me ? Why does talking about Romney’s taxes mean that Obama should be president. He screwed the economy. He screwed the healthcare system, He screwed our allies. He simply is a bad president.

    And can Obama tell me if he applied to college as a foreign exchange student ? I wonder if that “rich” man in Vegas has this info yet, or maybe Donald Trump. The D really wants Obama’s records so he can prove him a fake and a fraud.

    It’s time for Obama to come clean on his college records.

    This is just another “Daisy Girl” ad (Goldwater vs. Johnson). They (Team Obama) are throwing up every “scary” claim they can now hoping for a split at the convention and a disenfranchised Republican party.

    When Romney finally gets the endorsement however, Romney’s cash can be unleashed and will pound Obama harder than the “softening of the beach” at Iwo Jima.     Wasn’t an issue with McCain who also only released two years worth, and his wife is a very wealthy business owner and investor. John Kerry, granted has released a total of 20 years worth of tax returns, but that is for a total of 5 campaigns for the senate, and his presidential run. Speaking of his presidential run, he released his two most recent years worth of tax releases.
    BTW, I have no problem with this regardless. We know Romney is wealthy just as John Kerry is, actually Kerry is likely far more wealthy. Good for him, I have no class envy with that and will not get involved with this made up class warfare. But, the 0bama campaign is full speed ahead with his smear tactics, because he has personal record to run on, the economy is in the worst state that has probably ever been in since the Great Depression, gas prices are spiralling back upward out of control, and what do we hear? It‘s probably still Bush’s fault as well those evil oil companies, it’s not my faulit, I had nothing to do with it. Alfred E. 0bama.

He has some money in investments he paid for with money from his first rich wife which are now in tax shelters. 95% of the family income is from Theresa, and some estimate her worth around $1 billion – more than four times that of Mitt. The only tax returns Kerry has ever released are his own – the show taxes that are little more than his Senate pay. He‘s never released his wife’s, which is what they live lavishly on. Funny, but none of that billion dollars they have was earned by either of them. Theresa inherited the Heinz fortune when her husband John Heinz died. John Kerry then married Theresa. They’re mooches, vampires. Mitt Romney made his money like a man – hard work. John Kerry made his like a woman – marrying the wealthy. He’s an embarrassment, like most Democrats, but Democrats have no shame.

    Obama is a narcissist at the core, the god-king of the Democrats sees himself as incapable of making a mistake or doing wrong. He will continue to make these attacks as his growing instability of the mind continues with all due haste to the inevitable ending – full insanity and collapse of his world.

    There is no grounds for Obama and the Democrats to stand upon; so they have to forge forward with a massive campaign of distortion, fabrication and lies, all of course baseless to the extreme in an effort to disgust so many voters that they will vote for no one and thus throw the election to Obama with the mass of cheating and fraud coming from the left this Nov.

    There is one more motive to consider behind the scenes: SOROS.

    Remember well that the puppetmaster declared in an interview about the upcoming elections: “You do not need to control the voters, only those who certify the votes.”

    He has many of those on the state level in his pocket; and when the time comes for the Congress to ratify the electorial college count for the next President; how many of them does he have of the Senate in his pocket as well…the Senate in which the Democrats hold the majority?
