The NPR executive who fired Juan Williams with a phone call has resigned, reports say. The departure comes after an independent investigation found that while the firing was legal, it could have been handled better.
Despite those findings, however, NPR‘s Board of Directors decided to withhold the bonus of NPR’s CEO Vivian Schiller for her role in the incident.
Ellen Weiss, who refused to meet with Williams after he made some comments about Muslim “garb” and then fired him, informed Schiller of her departure, who in turn announced the move in a statement on NPR’s website.
“NPR SVP for News Ellen Weiss has notified me that she will be leaving her position,” Schiller wrote. “Over her decades at NPR, Ellen has made meaningful and lasting contributions to the evolution of NPR and our newsroom. She is a strong journalist who has brought her considerable talents to how NPR covers the world and meets the ever-increasing expectations of today’s audiences. Ellen exemplifies journalistic professionalism and integrity.”
In a separate statement, NPR’s Board announced the results of an independent investigation into the firing. That statement recognized Weiss’s resignation, but also said that Schiller would be punished by not receiving a bonus.
“The Board has expressed confidence in Vivian Schiller’s leadership going forward,” the statement said. “She accepted responsibility as CEO and cooperated fully with the review process. The Board, however, expressed concern over her role in the termination process and has voted that she will not receive a 2010 bonus.”
The independent review suggested a number of recommendations going forward, mostly centered on training and updating policies and procedures.
UPDATE:
Juan Williams reacted to the news on Thursday afternoon, saying NPR’s culture is “incestuous” and “not open”:

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:57pmBonus? What the heck does the CEO of a publicly funded entity like NPR do to deserve a bonus? Raise money? Create return for investors? After watching her stumble through the interviews after the firing of Juan Williams I think her entire salary is a bonus.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:47pmNational Progressive Radio should be defunded and forced to compete in an “open” market like everyone else. NPR has veered so hard left in the years since I listened to it (mid to late 70′s … in college) that I cannot stomach more than an hour of it without switching to another frequency. Defund asap.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:39pmNPR is just another example of Government Spending that should have been cut LONG ago!!! The original justification for funding has long since passed away.
Report Post »Warphead

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:38pmDefund the NPR. It has been obvious for a long time that they have a political agenda and the whole argument that they provide an unbiased news source is laughable. The Federal government has no business providing funding for any news service. Them them support themselves in the free market.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:26pmYa know what? I don’t care what they do. They have every right to say what they want, freely. They also have every right to employ whomever they want, or don’t want.
They just need to give up the federal spigot.
And so do we all. Turn off the federal spigot, let the states resume their proper authoritative rule.
Like that little character in the Max Max films said, “Embargo ON!”
Let‘s not use any more federal services that the Constitution didn’t originally provide for.
Good bye to our Federal Overlords. They have no business being in business. They are to govern for certain things only, a specific, enumerated group of things. The rest of it is up to the States and/or to the people.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:33pm@BEN………..bravo, my friend……bravo ! I long for the days when we can become yet again a sovereign nation and the states (albeit we will have to closely monitor our state legislatures and regulatory bodies) can resume their rights under the constitution….. Federalism….is almost an oxymoron because it distinctly calls for states to govern and for limited overbearing runaway power mongering feds………yes, we have to reverse it NOW !!!!!! God Bless America…..

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 10:15pmI’m getting tired of the “Poor Juan Williams” chant. He swam in that piranha tank for 10 years over at NPR. All I remember was Juan being the White House‘s pet analyst to sit in the O’Reilly sidekick slot before he got a knife in his back at NPR. If you’re looking for a replacement for Robert Gibbs, well “Poor Juan” is the man for the job. Then if Glenn don’t let the grass grow under his feet, he could offer Ellen Weiss a slot on the Blaze to add further “balance” to his lefthand threaded wingnut collection of staff he is acquiring.
Report Post »Bwahhh haa haaa haaa. He‘ll need to change the Blaze’s name to :TheCraze.com LOL

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 3:17pmOops, the buck stops at the top so I hope she wasn’t counting on that bonus. Adding to the bottom line will also make the stockholders happier too. Ellen Weiss will always be remembered for the unprofessional firing of Juan Williams so future employers, take note.

Posted on January 7, 2011 at 2:58amIt is all a nice scam. 1st the govt. gives a small amount of taxpayer money to NPR. Just a small amount so it looks good on the books. The govt. gives a large amount of money to the non-political PBS. Now PBS gets the tax payers money and pays it directly in small amounts to individual PBS stations throughout the the country, including radio stations in every local market. Now, individual radio stations are getting payed to broadcast NPR with money that has switched hands 3,4,5 maybe six times and is no longer considered govt. funding. Anywhere else this would by money laundering and a tax money shell game. Acorn and the Tides Foundation move their money around the same way so nobody knows exactly where all the funding is coming from.
Report Post »RabidPatriot
Posted on January 7, 2011 at 3:12amIf we de-funded PBS, it would be a De facto de-funding of NPR. All of the stations that broadcast NPR are being financially propped up by taxpayer money from PBS. They are not competing in the free market. But we all know that the progressives and professional left would scream Elmoism. They would say conservatives hate children because mean people were going to turn Sesame Street into a slum.

Posted on January 6, 2011 at 6:37pmLa Raza (The Race) succeeded in raking in over $15.2 million in federal grants last year alone, of which $7.9 million was in U.S. Department of Education grants for Charter Schools, and undisclosed amounts were for get-out-the-vote efforts supporting La Raza political positions.
The Council of La Raza succeeded in having itself added to congressional hearings by Republican House and Senate leaders. And an anonymous senator even gave the Council of La Raza an extra $4 million in earmarked taxpayer money, supposedly for “housing reform,” while La Raza continues to lobby the Senate for virtual open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens.
