NPR Host Fired After Serving as Occupy DC Spokeswoman

An NPR opera host has been fired after she admitted to serving as a spokeswoman for the ongoing Occupy D.C. movement.

Lisa Simeone said Thursday she was fired over the phone while NPR’s code of ethics was read to her. Earlier this week, Roll Call reported she was affiliated with October 2011, an Occupy-related group currently holing up in D.C.’s Freedom Plaza.

“Well, I work in radio still, but this is totally different,” Simeone told Roll Call on Tuesday. “I’m a freelancer.”

Simeone was the host of “Soundprint” and “World of Opera.” Neither program was produced by NPR, but “World of Opera” was distributed by the station and “Soundprint” aired on local affiliates.

“I find it puzzling that NPR objects to my exercising my rights as an American citizen — the right to free speech, the right to peaceable assembly — on my own time in my own life,” Simeone told the Baltimore Sun on Wednesday before she was fired.

Simeone maintained she is not a news reporter and therefore her involvement with the movement is not a conflict of interest.

“I don’t cover news. In none of the shows that I do, do I cover the news,” she said. “What is NPR afraid I’ll do? Insert a seditious comment into a synopsis of `Madame Butterfly?’”

Simeone said she has been serving with about 50 people on a steering committee for the occupation protest on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington. She said it is not connected to the Occupy Wall Street movement that began in New York, but they share similar philosophies.

On the October 2011 website, a pledge from someone signed Lisa Simeone said it’s time for the U.S.’s “worldwide torture regime to end”:

It’s long past time for the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to end, for U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen to end, for our worldwide torture regime to end, for Guantanamo to be closed, for political, military, and corporate criminals to be held accountable. We’re spending billions of dollars on destruction abroad and abrogation of rights at home — the only growing sector of the economy is the abusive National Security State. Meanwhile, millions of people are out of work, they’ve been thrown out of their homes, they can’t afford health care, they’re routinely vilified in national discourse, and the so-called news media is busy mouthing the majoritarian line. These things are all connected. As Hannah Arendt put it, ‘Empire abroad entails tyranny at home.’ I will be in Washington on October 6th to demand that my government stop abusing its own and other people and start answering to its citizens.

— Lisa Simeone

NPR issued a statement on its website Wednesday saying it had learned Simeon was participating in an “Occupy D.C.” group but that she is not an NPR employee.

“We’re in conversations with [local affiliate]  WDAV about how they intend to handle this,” the statement read. “We of course take this issue very seriously.”

NPR’s ethics code regarding political activities for its employees states: “NPR journalists may not participate in marches and rallies involving causes or issues that NPR covers, nor should they sign petitions or otherwise lend their name to such causes, or contribute money to them.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Tomloy …did you said “a controversial group” ??? What do you find controversial about this planned anti capitalist protest well organized and funded by Communist revolutionaries, Soros, Unions, Adbusters.org? Do you find something controversial on destroying our country values, our system and soul???…Instead I have no doubt about their bad intentions. To me they are not controversial, they are a total disgrace.

I don’t find it surprising that she is puzzled.
NPR is not objecting to her exercising her rights.
NPR is objecting to her bastardizing her objectivity. Supposedly.

      NPR futilely grasping at credibility.

Chisel off the warpaint. At best she’s a right wing progressive, at worst a full blown odumboite communist/fascist. Likely she’s right in the middle of the former and the later, which makes her at least 4 steps left of center right between right wing progressives, and left wing socialists of the communist party (aka left wing progressives).

I don‘t think she does finds it ’puzzling’, at all. Nor do any of the rest of us. Frankly, she had sold out her journalistic principles (if she ever had any) a long time ago. Only when she decided to “come out”, as seems to be virulently prevalent in “popular contemporary journalism” these days, as a communist or a supporter of some Marxist derivative as though that form of idealism would be an acceptable alternative to the idealism of journalistic integrity and personal honor. What are people thinkin’? Truth is NOT relative. and therefore, nor is honor.

I do not care for NPR. The station is still a liberal mouthpiece. Anyone supporting the “legitimacy” of the OWS “movement” should be let go if they work for any company which is truely American. The OWS movement is an orchestrated attempt to disrupt the American way of life. Trying to bring down capitalism while tweeting complaints about how “bad” America is over your IPAD is kind-of hypocritical, don’t you think. The very people and companies (and yes, that “evil” monitary system) who made the American way of life are the same ones OWS wants to abolish. Might I ask: What system is to replace capitolsim? If you think American living is so bad, send me your name, address and account information and I will buy you a one way ticket to Egypt, Jordan, Iran, or any other country you occupiers so rever. For all those who know the truth, this movement can’t gather momentum unless it is being financialy supported by the real evil doers (AKA George Soros, SEIU, etc.). The more the truth gets out there, the less powerful these malcontents will get.

What if… October 4, 2015… NEWS BRAKE… Capitalism Has Been Overthrown. Occupy Wall Street occupiers have, after 4 years of continual possession around the world, finally won their occupation. The President announced today, just after his breakfast, that capitalism is outlawed in the United States and will be replaced with a mild form of dictatorship, seasoned with just a little socialism. The President, now called The Peep Rapper, will soon be sending out his friends to begin acquiring assets to fund the new government. As The Peep Rapper has said, “I know the people will want to support my call to give up your wealth so I can share with all my people who have no wealth, even though by giving up wealth will make you poor and will make you eligible to receive wealth, will don‘t expect anything cause that wouldn’t be Fair to people who never had any wealth”. He also said that the rounding up of evil Rich people will continue, as he said yesterday during a tea party firing squad, “there were a lot more of them Rich guys than we thought, ha… we got 10 gold teeth out of one of them old geezers.” He also added, “since Congress and the Supreme Court will no longer be needed, anyone who is willing to die for the PR will be interviewed for positions in the security force, army, administration, kitchen staff, and maid service. “I really need someone I can trust to do my windows… ya know, government jobs are very important to the success of my new governm

Exactly. It’s always about the money. Whenever anyone says, “It’s not about the money.” It’s always about the money.

And these are not NPR’s true colors. NPR‘s true colors flew high and proud when James O’Keefe and Project Veritas https://www.theprojectveritas.com/civicrm/contribute/transact?reset=1&id=9 got them on hidden video. That prolly got the (remaining) leadership within PBS and NPR just a tad paranoid about where a hidden pinhole camera and microphone might be hidden next.

Indiana, not Texas. My understanding of Texas law with regard to “my kind” does not bode well for my moving down that way any time soon.

And don’t get me wrong. I’m all for opera and the symphony and museums and plays… I just don’t want to send *MY* money to support them unless *I* am actually walking through the door to experience (read: consume) them. Ditto anyone else’s money who does not or does not want to consume or support such “culture”.

There’s just as much culture at a NASCAR race, rodeo, monster truck rally, or major sporting event. It is just a different shape, color, and texture of culture, but it is no less a form of American mass culture. As much as Leftists do not want tax payer money to go to support automotive races and NFL games, I don’t want to see tax payer dollars go to support the arts and humanities. If the art and stage productions are good enough to receive public support, they are good enough to receive enough private support to not require public support. Just like any other cultural event.

Exactly right. You can say anything you want. The government cannot tell you what to think. Similarly it cannot tell those who hear you what to think about what you said. If they choose to shun you because you said something that is offensive to you that is their right.

It is certainly a stretch for NPR to sack an opera commentator for having a political opinion but quite frankly this way they can say that they are “unbiased” in their firings while keeping all their liberal political hacks in place. Sorry Lisa, that is what a human sacrifice is all about. Ask the pagans at your “occupation event”.

To simplify, I’m sure there was a contract with her employer as to “who” will be on the air. And, there was the mention of the code of ethics that she reportedly violated. Maybe at her next on air job she will read and understand their code or ethics or SOP.

Ms. Simeone seems to be blissfully unaware that NPR is literally fighting to keep federal money because of exhibitions of leftist favor like Ms Simeone’s. NPR didn’t need the bad publicity..so she got fired. I dare say NPR has made an excellent call knowing that the OWS “Fecesstock” protests will turn uglier very soon. Having one of their own presenters as a spokesperson won’t get them sympathy from a GOP controlled house, GOP controlled Senate and GOP President after the 2012 election.

The issue of free speech becomes moot when you break the rule of the organization you work for. They pay, you play. Otherwise you need to move on.

Hence why I’m wondering what she violated. While OWS is undoubtedly left-wing, it doesn’t necessarily have to be pro-Democratic; many of the issues the protesters rail against were done under Obama’s guidance, like the bank bail-outs. So I want to know specifically what part of the code of ethics she violated.
