NRA Refuses to Meet With Obama on Gun Control

On Tuesday, officials at the Justice Department met with gun control advocates, answering President Obama’s call to put aside “stale political debates” to begin “a new discussion” on ways to better enforce and strengthen America’s existing laws in the wake of the Jan. 8 shooting in Tucson. Missing from the dialogue, however, was the National Rifle Association (NRA) who pointedly responded to the president’s invitation: thanks, but no thanks.

NRA Refuses to Meet With Obama on Gun Control

“Every single day, America is robbed of more futures. It has awful consequences for our society. And as a society, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to put a stop to it,” Obama wrote in an op-ed published Sunday in the Arizona Daily Star.   “Now, like the majority of Americans, I believe that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. And the courts have settled that as the law of the land. … However, I believe that if common sense prevails, we can get beyond wedge issues and stale political debates to find a sensible, intelligent way to make the United States of America a safer, stronger place.”

In an open letter (pdf) delivered to the White House Monday, Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox, Executive Director of the NRA‘s Institute for Legislative Action criticized Obama’s call for a renewed dialogue on gun control and encouraged him instead to crack down on crime, not gun rights.

“[T]o focus a national dialogue on guns — and not criminals or mental health issues — misses the point entirely,” LaPierre and Cox wrote.  “If you do in fact believe the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right, we suggest you demonstrate that in your policies and those of your Administration, which you have not done to tdate. Simply saying that you support the right to keep and bear arms is mere lip service if not put into action.”

“The government owes its citizens its most vigorous efforts to enforce penalties against those who violate our existing laws,” they continued. “The NRA has members proudly serving in law enforcement agencies at every level. Rank and file law enforcement wan to arrest bad people — not harass law-abiding gun owners and retailers.”

(Video: NRA News)

As the gun control debate fires up, the New York Times noted Monday how Obama‘s gun control message attempts to borrow from the NRA’s own rhetoric:

For example, a White House adviser on Monday said Mr. Obama wanted to redefine the gun debate to “focus on the people, not the guns.” The president, in his column, cited the same policy areas Mr. LaPierre mentioned as fertile ground for consensus. And Mr. Obama emphasized, “First, we should begin by enforcing laws that are already on the books” — a line long used by the gun lobby.

Mr. Obama’s column in The Arizona Daily Star reflected his continued political caution toward an issue that for decades has polarized the country. In past weeks, aides had suggested he might give a public address expanding on his views about gun safety — an option that has now been put aside.

NRA Refuses to Meet With Obama on Gun Control

NRA EVP and CEO Wayne LaPierre

Mr. Obama spoke at a memorial service in Tucson four days after a gunman on Jan. 8 killed six people and wounded 13, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords. But gun safety advocates, including a group of mayors headed by Michael R. Bloomberg of New York, called on Mr. Obama to do more, including endorsing legislation to ban high-capacity magazines like those used in the Arizona attack.

“Why should I or the NRA go sit down with a group of people that have spent a lifetime trying to destroy the Second Amendment in the United States?” LaPierre rhetorically asked during an interview with the Times Monday.  “It shouldn’t be a dialogue about guns; it really should be a dialogue about dangerous people.”

Visiting Capitol Hill on Tuesday, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined congressional Democrats in announcing legislation to expand the nation’s gun background check system.

But gun control legislation may be the least of the NRA’s concerns. According to one Huffington Post report, the Obama administration is exploring ways to implement new gun control regulations through executive actions, bypassing Congress.

The Department of Justice held the first in what is expected to be a series of meetings on Tuesday afternoon with a group of stakeholders in the ongoing gun-policy debates. Before the meeting, officials said part of the discussion was expected to center around the White House’s options for shaping policy on its own or through its adjoining agencies and departments — on issues ranging from beefing up background checks to encouraging better data-sharing.

Administration officials said talk of executive orders or agency action are among a host of options that President Barack Obama and his advisers are considering. “The purpose of these discussions is to be a productive exchange of good ideas from folks across the spectrum,” one official said. “We think that’s a good place to start.”

Mr Obama wants to enforce the laws that are already on the books. What about the laws on illegal’s? I suppose this is a different law and does not need to be enforced. I would remind Mr Obama that if he does not want to fool with it we can handle it ourselves here in Arizona.

Just what we need…. Take away guns, outlaw guns and make it easier for criminals to rob people. My uncle was at an ATM. Some loser walks up behind him with a knife & demands his money. My uncle agrees to give up his cash, reaches in his coat pocket and produces a .38 snub. According to my uncle, the would be robber got a very sick look on his face & started crying and begging not to be shot. He then asked the robber to sit on the cold, wet ground while he called the police. The fellow obliged & waited to be arrested. This happened here in Florida.True story.

I forget the exact name for it, but what the huffintongblows was saying is the other means of by passing congress, is working with the UN, on a small arms ban\controll. which guess what. the legal gun you purchased would violate the language they are putting together.

in short, nothing more than a massive global gun control scheme, designed to register, ban and confiscate firearms from law-abiding citizens.
I dont know about you, but, i dont recognize the UN or any foreign entity to govern any part of what i do in america. in fact i dont even own a gun…yet, but darn sure do believe you have the right to have one.

I believe those guns were the ones that killed the agent in Mexico. If you want to see my weapons I will show one little piece of them. Nobody needs to see them or know that I have them. Start enforcing laws on the books and quit letting illegal immigrants go. That would help out a lot.

“A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. ”
The brilliance of our founding fathers is clear in this amendment. The British took to confiscating weapons from us before we won our freedom. Our founding fathers wrote this amendment not just so we can protect ourselves from bears and other predators, but also so that we could protect ourselves from our own government if the day and need should arise.

    Bravo for the NRA.

I’ve always thought the best way to control gun violence is to put a waiting period on purchasing ammunition. The old saying of “if they outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns” is true, and many bad people have guns.

With the control of ammunition sales, there might be a reduction in drive by shootings and bad people purchasing ammo that own unregistered/stolen firearms.

Obama while on the Joyce foundation redistibuted 24 million to help take away our second ammendment right. Obama nominated and was successful in getting two anti gun ownership advocates on the supreme court with Miss Sotamaye lying when asked specific questions about gun control and the first chance she got voted against our rights. Obama while he was a guest lecturer at columbia or one of those school, told a professor there that he doesnt believe people should own guns. How many pro second ammendment believers voted for and contnue to vote for democrats??? Wake up. He is just one supreme court justice away from taking our rights away. Just one!!!

Be nice if more would just not show up and send a clear message to this JOTUS(Joke of the US). BHO will never touch the 2nd Amendment he has made it abundantly clear but he will regulate the heck out of gunowners in America.

So I commend the NRA for doing what they did but would have been nice for them to challenge him on the regs in place restricting gun owners. I can have a a gun but cant go anywhere with it. The 2nd is the law of the land yet states through regs limit what we can do? How is it a Fed law like Obamacare is a must across the country for everyone but the 2nd is not. How can the govt regulate everyone must have health insurance and tell states they have no say yet allow them to have a say with gun rights?! Isnt the 2nd as much the law of the land as O-care? So I have to worry about some nut who has no respect for the law opening fire someday in a bank, restaurant, park, whatever and hoping I find cover for myself and family b/c Im not allowed to carry my gun.

Enforcing the laws on the books will never happen as it makes too much sense and keeping those animals on the streets justify the demand for new laws and regs. If the 2nd is the law of the land like Ocare then its my permit to carry?? http://www.savingtherepublic.com

The main reason the Second Amendment was written WAS NOT because of personal safety from the criminals in society, but because of the fear of the potential for government to become corrupt.

The Second Amendment recognizes the right of each individual to have the capacity to kill those in government who would infringe on our unalienable rights.

      Bill of Rights

“THE Conventions of a number of the States, having at the time of their adopting the Constitution, expressed a desire, in order to prevent misconstruction or abuse of its powers, that further declaratory and restrictive clauses should be added: And as extending the ground of public confidence in the Government, will best ensure the beneficent ends of its institution.”

His own family failed to take the shooter for a psychiatric evaluation.

His college refused to refer the shooter for a psychiatric evaluation.

How would a background check have stopped him from getting a gun?

He had a drug use conviction, and failed a drug test when he attempted to enlist in the Army.

Drug convictions don’t take away your second amendment right.

President Obama is pulling out a decisive issue, making ludicrous claims, and hoping to remind right-leaning Dems and Independants that he is for gun control.

Let‘s not forget when the Gov’t tried to take every legally-owned gun in New Orleans after Katrina, making those who registered their guns as vulnerable as non-gun owners…

This is Obama’s Plan B. His Plan A was to order the ATF to allow the sales of guns to Mexican drug cartels in order to create a “serious crisis” so he could “fix” it by clamping down on all gun sales. Remember Obama was also claiming US guns were ending up in the hands a Mexican drug dealers? Well, duh! That’s what they wanted to happen!

Governments historically always seek to disarm their citizens, and the larger a government grows, the more effort it expends to that end.

My father and many tens of thousands of others risked their life and were wounded/killed in WW2 (my father was wounded fighting Rommel’s forces in N. Africa), enduring and experiencing things only those who were there can comprehend, to ensure my freedoms which include the Second Amendment.

Anyone who attempts to disarm me in the course of trying to remove my Second Amendment rights will pay a high price, indeed. There are plenty of legal firearms available that can easily make Swiss-cheese of 1-inch military armor-plate and body armor. My favorite is the one my father had Sharpshooter and Marksman certifications for, and the one he carried into combat against the Nazis…the B.A.R (Browning Automatic Rifle). Quoting my father, the B.A.R. is; “The next-best thing to a Ma Deuce when the s*** hits the fan.” (“Ma Deuce” = M2 -.50-cal fixed-emplacement/crew-served & vehicle/aircraft-mounted heavy machine-gun).

GOA asked to be invited to this dance- and even named the tune they’d dance to- “Let’s talk about GunWalker…” If the NRA was seriously interested in enforcing the Second, they’d also find more ways than to tell hussein-o to get his ferking hands off our Constitution.

The NRA has been infected by Progressives. Wayne La Pierre is to blame as its leader. In the last election, it was the NRA who supported Harry Reid as the senate Candidate from Nevada. The excuse they used was that Harry Reid had built a state of the art gun range in the state as proof of his support. Harry Reid has one of the worst records voting for gun rights. Wayne La Pierre is merely taking a stance for show. HE IS IN FACT WORKING WITH OBAMA BY HIS “NO SHOW.” By not showing there will be no moderation of proposed gun control by Obama’s liberal elite cohorts. If he was at least in the dicussion, he could at least pull back any new proposals by his presence and gather facts to mount an effective campaign against whatever proposals come forth. Obama’s message of focusing on “the people” will set out a big list of qualifications a person must prove to obtain a gun, purchase ammo/supplies, etc… This will have virtually the same effect as outright ban on guns.

I used to be a NRA member but left as soon as Wayne La Pierre began to show his true colors. I am proud to say today that I’m no longer a member. I would reinstate if the organization went back to its basic principles of the 2nd amendment. That can only start when Wayne La Pierre loses his job.

He has made Congress irrelevant by using executive orders. Where the congressmen? 100 Senators plus 435 House members cost the USA a bundle., while they sit on their hands. We may as well fire them all, and save the money we pay for their salaries, BIG benefits, their staff, cars, and offices in DC and the several offices they keep in their home states. What the Hell, they are asking for it, by not standing up to Obama and his shredding our Constitution and our country’s moral fiber. What are they waiting for?? Remember the old typewriting exercise—-” NOW IS THE TIME FOR ALL GOOD MEN TO COME TO THE AID OF THEIR COUNTRY?” I don’t think the country can wait until 2012 to end the present destruction taking place in the USA.

Modus operandi — the Obama Administration as a functional dictatorship — if it can’t be accomplished the proper way, via Congress (the people), they simply do it by fiat (executive order). Congress — stop allowing this administration to make you irrelevant. Pass your own legislation in this area and/or strip funding such that these executive orders cannot be implemented.

I’m rather fond of the legislation that says ALL ABLE BODIED CITIZENS SHALL CARRY A GUN!

I agree, the only thing to make America safer is Open Carry Laws for all 50 states. Crime rates will fall dramatically.
