Nude Portrait of Canadian Prime Minister Sparks Controversy

In the grand scheme of people you would want to see naked, politicians almost always rank near the bottom of the list. This phenomenon has already been observed in cases like Anthony Weiner’s, and need not be rehearsed with visual examples.

However, what happens when depictions of a naked politician aren’t just drunken texts? What happens when they’re supposed to stand as legitimate pieces of art? Ask Canada, where a painting of conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper wearing nothing but a smile has become an object of controversy.

The Canadian Press reports:

Emperor Haute Couture, which Harper did not pose for, is by Kingston artist Margaret Sutherland.

It shows Stephen Harper reclining on a chaise longue wearing nothing but a subtle smile.[...]

Sutherland says the painting was motivated by her frustrations with the government and is meant to show that people need to look at issues for themselves without always believing the party line.

With all due respect to Ms. Sutherland, her message might have gotten a bit lost due to the shock value.

ABC News has also done a report on the painting, which can be viewed below. Children are advised to steer clear:

Ineffective piece of art? Definitely. But in the words of South Park, “what do you expect? They’re Canadian.”

    I think it’s hilarious that in the video, they’re using a spot the size of a soccer ball to blur out his junk … but if you look at the complete painting, you realize they could have used a dot the size of the period at the end of this sentence.

    Okay, so I looked her up and her other portraits are not so horrid. Either she purposefully made this one horrid, or she’s projecting photographs and tracing those on to the canvas in a sort of do-it-yourself paint-by-number way. She seems to have cut and pasted that one and her eye is so bad that she couldn’t even get the proportions right let alone properly connect an arm to a shoulder. She seems to know how to handle the paint, but MFA or not… I don’t believe she can draw worth beans.

    Wow, that is is excruciatingly bad ‘art’. I might be impressed if the ‘artist’ were 9 or 10 years old, but… wow. Is she actually making a living as an artist or is she just another bad amateur? Anyone know? Seriously, my 9 year old niece can draw better than that.

      NO .. you need to learn how to read .. she (the painter) did this .. watch the video .. she didn’t even get the “pet” right in the painting .. and you can tell she can’t paint and tried to put a photo (face) on another body that she obviously can’t paint either .. the whole thing is OFF.

    Disgusting!! And the painter sucks! His arm looks deformed and his hands are the size of a ten year olds!! My question is the pose for women or men. No women I know would like this sort of painting.. so he must be posing for men! Yuk! Gross and again disgusting! Cuse me I gotta go vomit!

    Problems with the painting:
    1) Looks more like Bobby Orr than Stephen Harper.
    2) Head is awkwardly placed on the body like a bad photoshop job.
    3} Proportions are off. Head too big, arms small, ankle wrong.

      Honestly, I think that was in violation of a convention somewhere. It seems like that sort of weapon isn’t supposed to be used against civilian populations.
