NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — The number of gay and bisexual characters on scripted broadcast network television has dipped slightly this season to 19 out of nearly 650 roles, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
The 16th annual “Where We Are on TV” report released Wednesday by GLAAD found that 2.9 percent of actors appearing regularly on prime-time network drama and comedy series in the 2011-12 season will portray gay, lesbian or bisexual characters.
That’s down from 3 percent in the 2009-10 season and 3.9 percent last season, when there were 23 out of a total of nearly 600 roles. The 2008-09 season saw an increased representation of 2.6 percent. GLAAD writes:
The overall diversity of regular characters on primetime broadcast television in terms of gender diversity, racial diversity, sexual orientation and people with disabilities is still not an accurate reflection of the American population. While there have been improvements in terms of the gender divide, women still only account for 43% of series regulars on primetime broadcast television while making up more than half the US population.
Only five of the 19 gay and lesbian characters this season are nonwhite, GLAAD found. The organization has created a list of characters, categorizing them by orientation, ethnicity and character type. Below, find profiles on each of these characters:
Using information provided by ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and CW, the group reviewed 91 scripted series announced to air this season.
Among broadcast series with gay and bisexual characters, GLAAD cited CBS’ “The Good Wife,” the CW’s “Ringer” and NBC’s “The Playboy Club.” Comedies include ABC’s “Modern Family” and Fox’s “Glee.”
Fox leads the networks in gay representation, with eight regular characters out of a total of 117. The number of gay and bisexual characters on cable networks has also fallen slightly, from 35 last season to 29 in the upcoming season.
As it did last year, HBO has the greatest number of gay and bisexual characters, with 11 regular and recurring characters. Showtime is close behind with 10.

The HBO drama “True Blood” remains among the most inclusive series on television, featuring six characters, tied with the Showtime series “Shameless,” the group found.
Some of TV’s most popular shows “weave story lines about gay and lesbian characters into the fabric of the show,” said GLAAD acting President Mike Thompson. “Americans expect to see the diversity of our country represented in their favorite programs, and that includes gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.”

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 9:06amThis doesn’t bother me too much, as the gay stereotypes depicted don’t represent myself or many gay men and women I know. I’m gay as in being attracted to a specific type of a man, that’s it.. I’m not campy, nellie, flamboyant or parade gay. BTW I am Sorry, I didn’t take the word gay and associate it to homosexuals, straight people did as a mean to discriminate.
My definitions:
Report Post »Bi Sexual – Goes both ways, usually married and hides there homosexuality
Gay – attracted to the same sex, wants to be left alone, won’t lie if asked about being gay.
Gay Gay – various stages of campy and flamboyant behavior
Parade Gay – over the top, in your face, more of an activist

I got better definitions for you. Abomination for starters, as that is what God calls you. Sodomite would be another term that fits. Destroyer of families and nations, as that is what homosexuals do. they never build a nation, they are always involved in the down slide and destruction. Unhealthy is another term that applies to the homosexual population. Criminal also applies, with the high child molestation rates, and the high assault rates of your lesbian crowd
-Gays = 2% of the population

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 11:03amSir, I happen to be a heterosexual, and like you, don’t need to brag about it or march in a parade. Those people that just want to keep their sexuality private are in the majority. We will always have extremist that feel they need to call attention to themselves. I have no problem respecting your lifestyle as long as you don’t try to rub my face in it. No pun intended.

Outside of the degenerate homosexuality community, who do you see standing up and flaunting their sexuality? When is the last time you saw a “heterosexual” parade?
Casting judgment is different than making a stand for that which is right. MTV, Hollywood, the MSM stuck homosexuality in our face. The empowered the political police, and indoctrinated a nation to believing a lie. We now have a nation of gutless males, who are more afraid of being called a homophobe, sexist, or racist, than standing up for what is right. You can call me all three at the same time, and I will still look you in the eye, and tell you the truth. The Bible tells us the homosexuality is an abomination. The Center for Disease Controls shows us the health problems caused by this immorality, and world history shows us that homosexuality destroys nations.
grow a backbone, and throw off the restraints of political correctness. Biblical correctness is much better.

Really? That strawman argument? You are seriously going to run with that one?
Alright then. Let’s go along your line of logic then.
Outside of the degenerate minority community, who do you see standing up and flaunting their race? When is the last time you saw a “white” parade?
So…you are a racist and a bigot. Got it.
Okay, I know you didn’t say the race part, but you are absolutely, without a doubt, a bigot. And as you spout the word of your god so freely, you are also judging another, which is not your place to do. God(as preached by any normal religion I can think of) loves all of his children. He wouldn’t have made it possible for someone to BE gay, if he wasn’t okay with it.
Unless of course you go along the line of logic that he put all these things to test us and if you do bad, you go to hell…as if God is some massively egotistical figure that just likes to toy with his creations like a kid playing with his action figures.
Yeah…two can play the game mate.
Generally speaking, I respect religious people and their beliefs despite how wrong or misguided I may believe them to be. You know why? It isn’t because God tells me to do that, but because I’m a genuine and decent person. You should try it sometime.

You are typical of those who try to argue via religion, but never use any Bible. Outside of saying God “loves everyone”, you have no basis or argument.
God also hates.
Proverbs 6:16-19These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness.” (Malachi 1:3)
Scripture says that God HATES the unrepentant sinner. Proverbs 6:16-19 says that the Lord HATES a false witness. It doesn’t say He hates the sin. NO. It says He hates the SINNER. It also says He HATES “he that soweth discord among brethren.” Again, it’s not the sin but the unrepentant sinner that God hates. He hates the look, the tongue, the hands, the heart, the feet… and the SINNER himself.
The Psalmist describes it God this way, “The foolish shall not stand in thy sight: thou hatest all workers of iniquity.” God doesn’t just hate the iniquity, but the “workers” of iniquity.
So, which is it? God is love but God also hates? Yes. Both. God is balanced and it is not contradictory when the Bible says that He hates sin and unrepentant sinners but also loves. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whos

Skin color is benign and non behavioral. homosexuality is not only behavioral, it is on the side of extreme behavior. Nice try on the comparison, but they do not compare.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 1:52pmRANGERP…absolutely right. The homosexual cry of “10%” is a false assertion. Alfred Kinsey developed a scale for the American male in the late 1940s; he found that 10% of the population had varying levels of attraction to the same sex, which is where the “1 in 10” figure you may have heard comes from. But that 10% mostly consisted of bisexuals. People who are strictly, purely homosexual consistently manifest as less than 2% of the adult population in most sociological studies.
Report Post »Bisexuality is the thorn in Gay, Inc.’s side because bisexuals can choose whether to date men or women. Even worse, they often end up choosing the opposite sex simply because it’s easier. As a practical matter, the bisexual man who sticks with women will likely avoid AIDS, while the bisexual man who has sex with men runs a high risk of seroconversion. Men who have sex with men make up less than 2% of the population but they constitute about 55% of people who get HIV every year — an overrepresentation of 2,750%. This is the kind of stuff homosexual militants and their mouthpieces in hollywood and the media don’t want you knowing. So nothing better than a sitcom, fantasy or a musical with homosexual characters to sanitize the reality and insinuate their agenda onto the population.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 2:20pmRAVENGLENN…I always have to laugh at the godless liberal asserting God’s will. The bible makes it very clear that homosexuality is a sin. ONLY the union between a MAN and WOMAN is blessed by God/G-d. This is normative to both Judaism and Christianity. I can cite slabs of scripture for you but it’s readily available with only some cursory research with credible sources. So in your twisted interpretation of Christianity you confidently proclaim that God is “ok” with homosexuality because he allowed it to be? God’s “ok” with our imperfections, not our sins. He also allows profound deformities, mental illness, Down Syndrome and all sorts of maladies and psychological states. Why? Because we’re only man, not God. We’re not created to be perfect and pristine, we’re created out of his love for us, with a soul and our imperfections to find a path to him. He loves us so much, he gives us a choice to either accept him or reject him. He loves us so much he allowed his own son to be born to a woman, to have our human imperfections and to be humiliated, suffer and die at man’s barbaric hands in order to bear our sins and redeem us. If we were perfect, we’d be God. Man is far from perfect. Please RAVENGLENN spare us your uneducated, twisted hermeneutics on God’s will.

Report Post »The best studies report 2-3 percent of U.S. population are homosexual/bisexual. You could be in an area that has been “depleted” of homosexuals (a bunch may have packed up and moved to Provincetown, Key West, and San Francisco). More likely, you may know some homosexuals who just don’t make it known to you. Now, wouldn’t that be interesting if any of the homosexual characters on TV could not be identified as being homosexual from the script (not likely at all).
I liken the 10 percent myth to the “bolsheviks” Nope, not saying that homosexuals are communists. After the Czar fell, there was a brief period when Russia was a republic. The minority of the legislators were communists. The communists, however, adopted for themselves the term “Bolshevik” — meaning “majority” to give them greater influence than they would naturally have. The 10 percent myth serves the same purpose.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 6:11pmThere are a whole array of sexualities out there. Asexuals, pansexuals, bisexuals, transsexuals, homosexuals, straights.
As for the numbers, take a look at this quote from the UK Guardian in 2008:
“While only six per cent of Britons define their sexual orientation as homosexual or bisexual, more than twice that number (13 per cent) of Britons have had some form of sexual contact with someone of the same sex.
“Sixteen per cent of women have had sexual contact with another woman, while 10 per cent of men have had sexual contact with another man.”
So we’re looking at between 6-16% of the population.
I, personally, identify as pansexual because I don‘t care about a person’s gender (male, female, trans). When I meet people, I don’t immediately identify individuals as a sexual interest. It is a feeling that grows with time based on the person’s personality, intelligence, and beliefs. Since a lot of people don’t understand the term pansexual, if pressed about my sexuality I‘ll say I’m bisexual. I don’t go out of my way to do it though, because I consider it private. If you met me on any given day, you wouldn‘t have a clue that I’m not your “typical” straight Christian white male.
Did I say Christian? Yup! Christian faith and diverse sexuality are not mutually exclusive. 17 years of Christian education (K through bachelors degree) was enough to get me to study the Bible in-depth. I profess a strong belief in Christ and am not ashamed of His presenc

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 6:47pmThe homosexual community has made the decision to further its own goals and objectives even at the expense of societal peace and prosperity. If this were not the case they would be content and self assured with affirmation from fellow homosexuals with regard to their lifestyle. Why is it so important for homosexuals to have the approval of society? Why do they consider it so important that religious groups acknowledge their legitimacy? If homosexuals were genetically predisposed to their choice of lifestyle they would come to accept that and would be comfortable and secure in that choice regardless of societal approval. It would simply become a fact of life that everyone would eventually ignore as they do other symptoms of humanity. There exists, however, too much controversy over this issue and they know in their hearts that their lives are a lie. There is no genetic predisposition and so they seek to obtain societal acceptance before the whole fiasco is exposed for the lie it is. They must have the affirmation of other groups to give them security in their choice and so they push themselves into the arena hoping to eliminate opposition to their cause and generate support from as many groups as possible to convey a sense of legitimacy and normalcy.

Since you like science so much, I would love to talk to you about it. I assume you are Christian, am I right? To be a Christian this is what you have to believe.
Richard Dawkins believes that humans have been in this current evolutionary form for about 250,000 years, Francis Collins (A Christian!) who is in charge of the human genome project thinks about 100,000. I’ll take 100,000, it’s more than I need.
To be a Christian you have to believe that for 96,000 years heaven watches humans grow. Watches us, with complete indifference, dying either in childbirth, at a young age, or of our teeth by the time we are 30. Heaven watches this with complete indifference. Then about 4,000 years ago, it says, “Okay that’s enough. Now it’s time to intervene.”
Where do they decide to intervene at, in the middle of an undeveloped land in the middle of the desert. Not in China, for example, where people there can already read and have a civilization. Let’s help this wandering people in the desert. That’s what you have to believe.

Also I agree with the guy who says he is gay but watches shows to be entertained. Most of us need to enjoy the shows we watch. Watching tv has no real impact on our lives except to allow us to escape reality for a while. I would much rather see a show where the characters are smart, considerate decent, caring men, than a show that shows women positively. I’m a woman and I like to see woman portrayed as being strong, sensible and competent, but I don’t feel like they need a certain percentage of woman on a show to make me want to watch. We like to see ideal male characters because for the most part it is a fantasy, no offense guys. Men like to see the same shows because they want to imagine themselves that way. This is responsible for the wide appeal of shows with smart, strong, decent male characters. Normal woman tend to focus on others and, unfortunately, men tend to focus on themselves.

In my opinion, there are no modern day shows worth watching. Hollywood began its assault on the American family decades ago. Long gone are shows such as Little House, Leave it to Beaver, Andy Griffith, the Waltons, …. They late 80s and 90s turned to anti family shows that always praised dysfunctional. Married with Children, Rosanne…. Then they went full force with putting sodomites and lesbians. Ellen the Degenerate, and the rest of the filth. We have lost the art of humor, and the only way Hollywood attempts humor is through talk of sex, homosexuality, or that which is anti family, anti God.

I think it’s a disservice to everyone when people sit down and say, “Okay, this show has this many of this kind, and that show has that many of that kind.” There have been untold number of shows that were canceled because either the plots or the characters regardless of their sexual orientations weren’t interesting. There have been shows that people never dreamed would last more than four episodes that became block buster hits (can we all say Star Trek?). It‘s too bad that GLAAD can’t get beyond this.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 8:57amA decline?
This is news to me, it seems to me that I can’t turn on my tv set without seeing some representative of the gay community advocating their lifetyle in some form or fashion.
I persoanlly have a very live and let live attitude towards gays and don’t even oppose gay marriage per se.
But I do get annoyed when I start to get the sense they trying to use the media to win new converts.
I especially don’t like it when I know my adult kids are watching some of these shows and I get the idea that they are trying to make being gay something that seems hip and cool.
Think Lady Gaga. Glee, Chaz Bono, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy ect., I could go on and on and site one example after another.
Why are they bombarding us with all this gay propaganda?
Give it a rest will ya?

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 9:06amIf they only understood we TURN IT OFF when we see it as do many of our friends so the sponsors are defeating their purpose. Again, why can’t they just be people…not black, not white, not gay, not straight, not other labels? Write the story and avoid the political agendas in the story lines. Give us back some of the great programs of many years ago that were funny, good feeling about others, and offering hope? Too bad they don’t get it. Most of us don’t want certain persuasions crammed into our living rooms night after night…an occasional blurp…maybe.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 9:17amObama appointed a homsexual “czar” as the head of education. That is why that they are teaching a homosexual affair between a 13 yr old girl and a 31 yr old woman to 13 yr old children. It’s called Communism at its finest. It is demoralization of a nation so as to be able to conquer that nation without firing a shot. There is no such thing as “gay marriage.” Marriage was instituted by YWVH to be between one man and one woman. YWVH “hates” homosexuality. He will never recognize it and neither would any true Christian. A homosexual union is a union minioned by Satan. Don’t get me wrong. I am not judging them. Yashuah said, “I have not come to judge the world but to save it. My Word will judge you on that last day.”John 12:47-49 Christians didn’t make this stuff up just because they try to make the bible fit their beliefs. We just happen to believe Yashuah.. He was there creating with the creator at the foundations of the world. John 1;3

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 2:04pmThe operative word is “characters.” Believe it or not, Chaz Bono, Lady Gaga, and the cast of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy are all real people. I think that what is really happening is that the number of characters in general on tv is decreasing because reality shows are cheaper to produce and get just as good ratings as dramas. You don’t need sets or location shots or expensive post production, and no matter how many seasons they last you don’t have star actors who have to be given raises.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 8:42amIMO it‘s a crime what’s been done to Charlaine Harris’ books, in the True Blood TV series (no pun intended, they are published as mysteries)…although she appears quite happy with the TV show and with the fame it’s brought her. I think she’s even changed certain aspects of her writing because of the TV show. Used to buy her books in hardback (they only come out in paperback a year later) but now if I do read them, I get them from the library.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 9:38amThey should have learned with the ELLEN show. After Degeners came out of the closet publicly and made it part of her character her show tanked. Networks may have been deceived by the success of WILL AND GRACE, but that was an absurdist comedy. In those types of comedies you don’t have to relate to the characters. You don’t laught WITH them but AT them. If you are expected to sympathize with the characters it is very different. Gay characters in intended sympathetic roles make us feel as if we are being forced to accept them and their behavior.

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 9:00amTV….leads a lot of people down the more widely path traveled. It’s a shame that the youth are brought up watching it and thinking that trash is acceptable behavior. My favorite theologian says that homosexuality is the hardest of the sins to break free of. I guess they think that they can always repent and turn away from it, but it is one of Satan’s strongholds, and he doesn’t let go so easily. There have been some released from this bondage, . A person told me once that he went to a psychologist because he was concerned that he might be gay. The shrink asked him what he dreams of..men or women., he said women,.the shrink told him.”.then you are not gay.” But I submit to you.. that even if you were to dream of someone of the same sex, that is just the devil tempting you. That does not make you gay. One needs to cling tightly to YWVH in all things. Satan comes in many forms. We must choose our master or he is chosen for us. For if one is not a child of YHVH and saved by His Son Yashsuah. then one’s master is chosen by default. The true Israelites know the true YWVH, but have yet to recognize His Son, but they will. And all of the “true Israel will be saved.”

Posted on September 28, 2011 at 11:44amGays coming out of the closet has a silver lining for all.
As more people admit who they are or what they do, then statistics will be easier to keep on epidemiology, divorce & everything else. Everyone can judge for themselves.
I believe that “one” of the ways that some gays are created is thru bullying. I look at the Safe School Czars, Kevin Jennings, early years, I think his family situation & early bullying for whatever lead hm to become gay. It is kind of like the “what came first the chicken or the egg” argument. I think the question will be definitively answered when psychologists, computer scientist model the brain and conduct a few thousand simulations of a people from birth to young adulthood. The will have inputs like bullying that all animals in the animal kingdom engage in. They will find this to be true, but they won’t find a gay gene. There isn’t a gay gene. Society has a much to do in creating most if not all gay people. People should just lay off gay people but not give into their demands that nothing is wrong with their way of life. That is should be promoted.
