Number of People Seeking Unemployment Aid Increased Last Week

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — The number of people who applied for unemployment benefits rose slightly last week, a sign that the job market remains weak.
Weekly applications increased by 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 401,000, the Labor Department said Thursday.
The modest gain comes after applications plummeted by 33,000 in the previous week. The drop partly reflected technical difficulties with the department’s seasonal adjustment process.
The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell for the second straight week to 414,000, its lowest level in a month.
Still, applications are higher than they would be in a healthy economy. They need to fall below 375,000 to signal sustainable job growth. They haven’t been that low since February.
The slumping economy has led many employers to pull back on hiring. Economists expect employers added just 56,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate remained stuck at 9.1 percent for the third straight month. The government issues its September jobs report on Friday.
According to the Washington Post, “President Obama will hold a press conference today at 11 a.m. as he continues to pressure Congress to pass his jobs plan.” It is expected that the economy will be addressed during his speech.
There have been some pessimistic signs regarding hiring this week. Service firms, which include retailers, restaurants, hotels and health care providers, cut their staffs for the first time in 13 months in September, according to a private survey Wednesday by the Institute for Supply Management.
And payroll processor ADP said that businesses added 91,000 jobs last month, a mildly optimistic reading. But the ADP report doesn’t cover government jobs. And it has been inconsistent with the Labor Department’s figures. ADP reported a similar job gain for August, and yet the government’s report found a net job gain of zero.
On a positive note, on Monday the ISM’s employment index for the manufacturing sector rose, suggesting factories added jobs last month. But manufacturing accounts for only about 10 percent of U.S. employment, and can’t boost hiring by much on its own.
The overall economy barely grew in the first half of the year. Many economists fear it could fall back into recession. Several analysts have put the risk of a recession as high as 40 percent.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Tuesday that the economic recovery “is close to faltering.” Bernanke said that the economy is growing more slowly than the Federal Reserve had expected and that the biggest factor depressing consumer confidence is poor job growth.

Posted on October 7, 2011 at 3:10amThe methods used to determine the numbers being presented to the public go way beyond fuzzy math. I sure wish I could apply this creative method to my own debt to income ratio. While it may not change the reality of my personal economic situation, it sure would “feel” good to see friendly numbers on the sheet before my eyes. Oh, and while our family does not show up on any of the “official” statistics, we ARE unemployed….we’re just not on the “P-O-O-P” (President Obama out-of-work payroll). Wonder what the real honest stats are on folks in this scenario.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 10:32pmMore people on government dole means more voters for Obama. Keep people dependent for their livelihood on government entitlements and they will be followers of Obama. Progressives have no value for life and individual dignity. They use people to get what they want.

This is not good. Usually retailers are hiring this time of year, In prep for Christmas sales. You can thank the Democrats for this. They took a bad economy, promised to make it better and instead it’s far worse than we could have imagined. I hate to think what another four years of this, would do to our country………..MSSMUG

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 12:32pmI find it interesting that last weeks number was down significantly due to a technical difficulty yet the revised number is buried. Not surprising to me this number jumped back up in line with the other numbers. Every week the numbers are reported far lower than actual and then in the following week the number gets revised upward yet this gets an almost under the breath type of mention. And somehow week after week 400,000 file for new unemployment benefits, yet the number magically remains at 9.1%

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 11:08amCan someone please explain, I don’t get this math where a negative 401k and a positive 56k allows the unemployment number to remain stable, and this pattern apparently repeating for over a year now? How can we sustain month after month of 400k+ and no mention of 400k+ new jobs to equal it, how does the unemployment number remain so relatively stable?

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 10:23amMr. Obama’s agenda advances! http://commonsense21c.com/
An economic crisis, ending in violent chaos is the prescription for replacing a Republic with a Dictatorship. Since taking office, Mr. Obam’s agenda has been a blueprint for establishing that economic crisis.
That agenda is approaching completion. The economic crisis is almost upon us and the civil unrest to justify a declaration of martial law and suspension of the Constitution has started with the “OCCUPY WALL STREET” campaign.
On February 24, 2011 President Obama informed Congress that he would not enforce the laws that he disagreed with. Thus, Mr. Obama declared himself a Dictator? Is this our new form of government? A Dictator does not require the approval of Congress! Dictators don’t resign and dictators don’t allow free elections! The “OCCUPY WALL STREET” is the beginning of the final step to consolidate tyrant’s power!

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 10:11amOf course we have unemployment. Do you think those who are demonstrating against those who can provide employment want a job? I don’t think they do. Gee, If I wanted a job, I’d be out there working hard to obtain employment, not going to New York screaming at those who can provide jobs for me. DUH. When I see them out there behaving like this, I know what they want and it’s not to go to work and work hard and earn their own money. It’s to steal from those who do work…….and kill those who won‘t go along with their insanity to pay them to stay at home and do whatever they want at someone else’s expense. What do they expect they will get with these demands? Yes, NO ONE WILL HIRE ANYONE ANYMORE DUHHHHHHHHHH. Can they get any more stupid? Why not wipe out everything that can make money? Then they can end up not working and then just robbing people for a living. I have a job because I work at it and do my best. If I lost my job, I would reinvent myself, take some courses and keep applying to gain employment. These people are drilling holes in their boat that is sinking. They have lost their minds……..destroying their own future and Soros (who has a ton of money and power and control) is laughing at them because they are helping him to destroy them. All I can do is pity them and shake my head at them.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 10:28amOh MY this is news. This is what happens with Keynesian Economics. Especially with a DIP WAD at the helm. Does anyone really think it shall get better by throwing more and more money at the problem? Look at Public Education for that answer. Every time a study comes out saying the US is falling farther behind in education the only answer for the DIP WADS is to throw money at it until the next disparaging study comes out. Then repeat with more money. What does Washington DC throw at its students? 20,000 per? How has that worked out. What was unemployment 6 months ago? How much money have we thrown at that? A gazillion? Again, how has that worked out? Bunch of Harvard elitists that could not think their way out of a paper bag. We are in a hurt right now, big time, with these idiots thinking there in D.C.

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 9:22amLet’s use taxpayers dollars to build a bridge or road. That borrowed money will create jobs for about 50 construction workers and bring the number down accordingly. I get my numbers from counting the pickups sitting along side the road while I’m stuck in a traffic jam burning up precious fuel and taking time from my productive day. Then when the work is done we can put scratch our heads and realize that was work created, not a job. Great plan huh?

Posted on October 6, 2011 at 9:11amThat’s why in his new stimulus (jobs) bill he wants to extend unemployment benefits up to 3 years. I guess nobody can roll out of bed before noon the first 2 years and find a job. I am still trying to figure out why the liberals are calling it a jobs bill when it promotes staying on unemployment.
