Nuns Come Out Swinging Against GOP Budget Cuts During Bus Tour

DES MOINES, Iowa (The Blaze/AP) — A group of Roman Catholic nuns who have come under fire aren’t quieting down. In fact, they’re doing quite the opposite, as they began a nine-state bus tour on Monday protesting proposed federal budget cute. The women said they weren’t trying to flout recent Vatican criticisms of socially active nuns but felt called to show how Republican policies are affecting low-income families.

The tour was organized by Network, a Washington-based Catholic social justice group criticized in a recent Vatican report that said some organizations led by nuns have focused too much on economic injustice while failing to promote the church’s teachings on abortion and same-sex marriage. The Vatican asked U.S. bishops to look at Network’s ties to another group of nuns it is reorganizing because of what the church calls “serious doctrinal problems.”

Sister Simone Campbell, Network’s executive director, while the tour may appear to have been organized to counter recent criticism of social activist nuns by the Vatican and American bishops, it was not. The timing was in response to consideration of the federal budget in Congress, she said.

“We‘re doing this because of what’s happening on the Hill,” she told The Associated Press in an interview. “We’re desperate to get the word out, that‘s why we’re doing it now.”

But if the 14 nuns who will rotate on and off the bus during the next two weeks weren’t trying to counter the Vatican, they likely did little to ease its concerns about social activism.

The tour kicked off with a rally that had the feel of a political event. About 20 supporters brought flowers and balloons and sang, “Alleluia,” as the nuns boarded a modern tour bus decorated with bright-colored graphics.

While the nuns say they aren’t opposing any specific Republican candidate, they plan stops at the offices of several closely tied to the budget process, including House Speaker John Boehner of Ohio, and Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan, the architect of the House-passed budget. Their first stop Monday was Rep. Steve King’s office in Ames. The tour will end in Washington on July 2.

The mandate to crack down on socially active nuns upset some church parishioners who turned out to support the nuns.

“They want to bully these nuns and shut them down and tell them: `Get back in your place, ladies.’ No, it’s not going to be that way anymore,” said Mary Ann McCoy, of Des Moines, who attends St. Ambrose Cathedral.

She said the Vatican and bishops speaking so harshly of nuns has split the church.

“They’re women of courage,” McCoy said. “Back in the Old Testament they talked about prophets. A prophet is somebody who speaks for God and these are the things that God talked about – injustice, the poor, the marginalized, woman. Jesus was the greatest prophet when he went out and he shook things up a lot. Well, I think the sisters are walking the walk and talking the talk and that‘s what’s important to us.”

While the Vatican has criticized Network, church officials have not ordered a full-scale overhaul of it as is being done with another group, the Leadership Conference of Women Religious. After a two-year investigation, the Vatican concluded the conference had undermined Roman Catholic teaching with radical feminist themes and taken positions that undermined Catholic teaching on the all-male priesthood, marriage and homosexuality. Three U.S. bishops, including Seattle Archbishop J. Peter Sartain, have been given five years to reorganize that group.

Nuns Go on Bus Tour & Speak Out Against Republican Budget Cuts

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops did not immediately comment on the bus tour.

Campbell said if the Vatican would talk to her group, she could explain that it was simply continuing the work on poverty and economic injustice that has been its focus for 40 years.

Father Michael Amadeo, who attended the rally and is pastor of Holy Trinity Church in Des Moines, said that although the Vatican may have issues with Women Religious, he doesn’t think the bus tour conflicts with church teachings.

“These are Catholic social teachings which we’ve had for decades,” he said. “What they’re trying to highlight both to communities as well as legislators is what our Catholic social teachers are, and they are about not only charity work but asking the tough questions. Why are these people homeless? Why are they in shelters? Why are they on food stamps? Part of our social justice teaching is asking questions about justice.”

Amadeo said 300 people turned out Sunday night for a send-off prayer service for the nuns at his church. He said that’s an indication of support and there are plenty of people committed to working for justice and helping the poor.

“Hopefully this will be a groundswell as it heads across the nation,” he said.

Boehner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the bus tour.

King’s office responded with an email faulting “the failed policies of President Obama and Nancy Pelosi,” vowing to repeal the president’s health care reform law and promising to pass a balanced budget amendment. The email did not say anything specifically about the nuns.

Ryan‘s spokeswoman also did not mention the nuns when she responded to a request for comment by sending several Internet links to interviews and opinion pieces he’s written on the budget. One was published April 25 in the National Catholic Register and is posted on his website.

“Our budget ends welfare for those who don’t need it, but strengthens welfare programs for those who do. Government safety-net programs have been stretched to the breaking point in recent years, failing the very citizens who need help the most,” he wrote. “… We rightly pride ourselves on looking out for one another – and government has an important role to play in that. But relying on distant government bureaucracies to lead this effort just hasn’t worked.”

I am a woman; I own a company; I don’t shy away from anything but I say these NUNS are way out of order (I am a Catholic Convert). I fear they’ve been coopted by code pink types. THEY DO NOT SPEAK FOR WOMEN IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH. (Maybe a few in CA. but not for the majority of us)
I have come to trust the centuries of learning, education and teachings and these women should recall their vows as the Brides of Christ and their role in the Church. DO NOT make the mistake of saying such silly things like a SPLIT in the CHURCH. NOT that I know of or have heard of and not from any of the STRONG women I know. These women are silly women. Every group has their share of silly people. These are our silly women. I hope they will get into Prayer with the Creator of the Universe and listen to HIM not to their foolish will.
The reason that funds have been cut to viable projects is because of Illegals using our facilities and not paying into them; because of fraud – people who could work but won’t; because of waste and duplication in DC (the Behemoth A.K.A. The US GOV); because of crony capitalism (nothing to do with
American Capitalism) and their role is PRAYER and working with what they have. ALL THINGS come from GOD and yet here they are, totally outside their role – led by renegades (prodded on by Satan). I am ashamed of them and before any other Catholic Women loose their own focus; go to GOD. This is not helping anyone but the enemy.

I really dislike stories on nuns like these. Most nuns are not like this, and they in no way, represent modern Catholicism. The Catholic church has been infiltrated by godless commies, much like the education system, the military, the media, and the overall culture has been.

We need to EXCOMMUNICATE these women. The #1 issue for Catholics is abortion. To advocate for social justice while ignoring the innocent babies being slaughtered daily = not a real Catholic. I wish we would take a hard line against these types and kick them out. These women fail to realize the human condition. Good Christians can try to help the “poor” til they’re blue in the face, but unless the poor have a good, hard-working, heart, they will remain poor and destitute. Tough love is sometimes the best love, ladies.

      @RIGHT…
Typical Bent Theology: Christ was conceived a God, so the Fetus must be Protected. Yet, if Christ was an All Knowing, All Powerful God, in the Womb, why did he need Mary as a Host, why did he need to be born, and why did he have to be Educated?

A body can only have One Soul (unless you are Ancient Egyptian)… a Fetus acts a parasite sharing the Mother;s Body… and Birth, cuts the Umbillical Cord, and the biblical BirthRight comes a New Soul. In fact, 2 of 3 Fertalized Eggs simply pass through a Woman’s Body… where we do not Blame GOD for a Poor Design nor accuse HIM of Sin!

A Baby is only a Baby at Birth… and if you would Law otherwise, then you condemn all Women to Slavery…. take away their Choices; take away the Free Will that GOD gave them… and you must Punish & Persecute Violators!

Dear Sisters: Long ago and far away, women became nuns to serve God and live a life devoted to faith. They did not join to be social activists. They did not join to champion the underdogs. They willingly left the secular life behind and all that went with it. They were servants of God FIRST, LAST and ALWAYS. If you insist you must be the ‘face of the poor and the homeless’ then DO NOT JOIN THE CONVENT. Stay on the outside, campaign for your causes, raise hell with the govt. but don’t do it disguised as a nun. John XXIII ‘opened the doors’ of convents and seminaries for those who wished to leave without penalty, but he really screwed up when he chose not to lay down the law as far as the expected behavior of those still within. The good sisters were my teachers and role models for 12 years and I will never forget them. Their successors, however, are far less than they were and have no business being in the convent.

Catholic nuns role has always been to serve Christ by caring for the poor and sick. These Nuns are living that example. These nuns are also echoing the message of the Catholic Bishops that have said the Paul Ryna, Pro-Ayn rand budget is against Catholic Teaching, that it punishes the poor and weak for the benefit of the rich and powerful.

Some anti-Catholics claim the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon of Revelation 17 and 18. Dave Hunt, in his 1994 book, A Woman Rides the Beast, presents nine arguments to try to prove this. His claims are a useful summary of those commonly used by Fundamentalists, and an examination of them shows why they don’t work.
      #1: Seven Hills
Hunt argues that the Whore “is a city built on seven hills,” which he identifies as the seven hills of ancient Rome. This argument is based on Revelation 17:9, which states that the woman sits on seven mountains.
Vatican City is not built on seven hills, but only one: Vatican Hill, which is not one of the seven upon which ancient Rome was built. Those hills are on the east side of the Tiber river; Vatican Hill is on the west.

      #2: “Babylon”—What’s in a Name?
Hunt notes that the Whore will be a city “known as Babylon.” This is based on Revelation 17:5, which says that her name is “Babylon the Great.”
Revelation consistently speaks as if there were only one “great city” (“the great city”), suggesting that the great city of 11:8 is the same as the great city mentioned in the other seven texts—Babylon. Additional evidence for the identity of the two is the fact that both are symbolically named after great Old Testament enemies of the faith: Sodom, Egypt, and Babylon.
This suggests that Babylon the great may be Jerusalem, not Rome. Many Protestant and Catholic commentators have adopted this interpretation. On the other hand, early Church Fathers often referred to Rome as “Babylon,” but every references was to pagan Rome, which martyred Christians.

      #3: Commits Fornication
Hunt tells us, “The woman is called a ‘whore’ (verse 1), with whom earthly kings ‘have committed fornication’
Against only two cities could such a charge be made: Jerusalem and Rome.” To identify the Whore as Vatican City, Hunt interprets the fornication as alleged “unholy alliances” forged between Vatican City and other nations, but he fails to cite any reasons why the Vatican’s diplomatic relations with other nations are “unholy.” He also confuses Vatican City with the city of Rome, and he neglects the fact that pagan Rome had “unholy alliances” with the kingdoms it governed (unholy because they were built on paganism and emperor worship).

#4: Clothed in Purple and Red
Hunt states, “She [the Whore] is clothed in ‘purple and scarlet’ (verse 4), the colors of the Catholic clergy.” He then cites the Catholic Encyclopedia to show that bishops wear certain purple vestments and cardinals wear certain red vestments.
Hunt ignores the obvious symbolic meaning of the colors—purple for royalty and red for the blood of Christian martyrs. Instead, he is suddenly literal in his interpretation. Purple and red are not the dominant colors of Catholic clerical vestments. White is. All priests wear white (including bishops and cardinals when they are saying Mass)—even the pope does so. Hunt neglects to remind his readers that God commanded that scarlet yarn and wool be used in liturgical ceremonies (Lev. 14:4, 6, 49–52; Num. 19:6), and that God commanded that the priests’ vestments be made with purple and scarlet yarn (Ex. 28:4–8, 15, 33, 39:1–8, 24, 29).

      #5: Possesses Great Wealth
Hunt states, “[The Whore’s] incredible wealth next caught John’s eye. She was ‘decked with gold and precious stones and pearls . . . ’ [Rev. 17:4].” The problem is that, regardless of what it had in the past, the modern Vatican is not fantastically wealthy. In fact, it has run a budget deficit in most recent years and has an annual budget only around the size of that of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Furthermore, wealth was much more in character with pagan Rome or apostate Jerusalem, both key economic centers.

      #6: A Golden Cup
Hunt states that the Whore “has ‘a golden cup [chalice] in her hand, full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication.’” This is another reference to Revelation 17:4. Then he states that the “Church is known for its many thousands of gold chalices around the world.”
To make the Whore’s gold cup suggestive of the Eucharistic chalice, Hunt inserts the word “chalice” in square brackets, though the Greek word here is the ordinary word for cup (potarion), which appears thirty-three times in the New Testament and is always translated “cup.”
He ignores the fact that the Catholic chalice is used in the celebration of the Lord’s Supper—a ritual commanded by Christ (Luke 22:19–20; 1 Cor. 11:24–25); he ignores the fact that the majority of Eucharistic chalices Catholics use are not made out of gold, but other materials, such as brass, silver, glass, and even earthenware; he ignores the fact that gold liturgical vessels and utensils have been part of the true religion ever since ancient Israel—again at the command of God (Ex. 25:38–40, 37:23–24; Num. 31:50–51; 2 Chr. 24:14); and he again uses a literal interpretation, according to which the Whore’s cup is not a single symbol applying to the city of Rome, but a collection of many literal cups used in cities throughout the world. But Revelation tells us that it’s the cup of God’s wrath that is given to the Whore (Rev. 14:10; cf. Rev. 18:6). This has nothing to do with Eucharisti

      #7: The Mother of Harlots
Now for Hunt’s most hilarious argument: “John’s attention is next drawn to the inscription on the woman’s forehead: ‘THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH’ (verse 5, [Hunt’s emphasis]). Sadly enough, the Roman Catholic Church fits that description as precisely as she fits the others. Much of the cause is due to the unbiblical doctrine of priestly celibacy,“ which has ”made sinners of the clergy and harlots out of those with whom they secretly cohabit.”
Priestly celibacy is not a doctrine but a discipline—a discipline in the Latin Rite of the Church—and even this rite has not always been mandatory. This discipline can scarcely be unbiblical, since Hunt himself says, “The great apostle Paul was a celibate and recommended that life to others who wanted to devote themselves fully to serving Christ.”
Hunt has again lurched to an absurdly literal interpretation. He should interpret the harlotry of the Whore’s daughters as the same as their mother’s, which is why she is called their mother in the first place. This would make it spiritual or political fornication or the persecution of Christian martyrs (cf. 17:2, 6, 18:6). Instead, Hunt gives the interpretation of the daughters as literal, earthly prostitutes committing literal, earthly fornication.

      Posted on June 21, 2012 at 5:50pm

If Hunt did not have a fixation on the King James Version, he would notice another point that identifies the daughters’ harlotries with that of their mother: The same Greek word (porna) is used for both mother and daughters. The King James Version translates this word as “whore” whenever it refers to the mother, but as “harlot” when it refers to the daughters. Modern translations render it consistently. John sees the “great harlot” (17:1, 15, 16, 19:2) who is “the mother of harlots” (17:5). The harlotries of the daughters must be the same as the mother’s, which Hunt admits is not literal sex!

#8: Sheds the Blood of Saints
Hunt states, “John next notices that the woman is drunk—not with alcohol but with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus . . . [cf. verse 6].” He then advances charges of brutality and killing by the Inquisitions, supposed forced conversions of nations, and even the Nazi holocaust!
This section of the book abounds with historical errors, not the least of which is his implication that the Church endorses the forced conversion of nations. The Church emphatically does not do so. It has condemned forced conversions as early as the third century (before then they were scarcely even possible), and has formally condemned them on repeated occasions, as in theCatechism of the Catholic Church (CCC 160, 1738, 1782, 2106–7).

But pagan Rome and apostate Jerusalem do fit the description of a city drunk with the blood of saints and the martyrs of Jesus. And since they were notorious persecutors of Christians, the original audience would have automatically thought of one of these two as the city that persecutes Christians, not an undreamed-of Christian Rome that was centuries in the future.

These are not like the industrious nuns that provided the funding for the Mayo Clinic a century ago.
These nuns are expecting government to be their god. They will not see any good come of it.

Jesus taught to give of yourself to the poor and the needy. He did not say go out and campaign for people to give to the poor by government mandate. That is not Christianity, that’s socialism.

This is why the Church is not happy with activist nuns. They are playing politics and not teaching Christianity.

By the way Sisters, less taxes by the government means more money in the collection plate.

I would rather give to most any church than give to the government for the needy, the Church takes a much smaller cut than the government and they don’t do it for votes.

Get your minds right Sisters, your mixing politics with Christianity and they don’t mix.

Jesus also said, “Those who do not work do not eat.”

A prophet is someone who prophesies something in the future usually having to do with something God is going to do or let happen.

Funny that the catholic church will protect child rapists from the law but will come with full force against gentle elder aged nuns.

Maybe if the Catholic Church spent their money to help others instead of themselves these nuns wouldn’t have to complain to the government. I mean c’mon, the Vatican has gold covered images of baby Jesus. What’s up with that?

Don‘t forget about the fact that the pope stated that people shouldn’t be obsessed with money while sitting on a throne of gold.

Antitheist – But you have no problem with children being molested in public schools. And losers like you shouldn’t be allowed to have a dime of taxpayer money.

Jesus believed that charity should come from the heart and not FORCIBLY taken by government then redistributed. These “nuns” need to take their ideology elsewhere.

then you religious types need to start giving more, or your churches need to start spending more. charitable donations only account for about 5% of services for the poor and needy. without the gov’t, millions would go hungry and die. you ok with that? if so, you should turn in your Christianity membership immediately.

When will people learn it is not the business of the federal government to “take care of people”. The only thing it is supposed to do is protect them from outside and inside (like Obama) threat. Only STATES are supposed to choose to take care of its citizens. THAT IS WHY WE ARE IN TERRIBLE TROUBLE FOLKS! Go protest your govenors!

The nuns themselves should be performing the charity work instead of demanding that the government do it.

Amen! That is what they are supposed to do. Christ didn’t rely on Gov. help.
      He preached against it.

I have to agree. There’s no such thing as Social Justice, the church is supposed to be neutral when it comes to politics. A bunch of nuns running around claiming to be for or against a pollitical ideal goes against all of Christ’s teachings. Unfortunately, there aren’t many churches out there that actually teach and follow the bible that closely. Jehovah Witness’ are about as close as it gets but they also have their problems.

Who could have thought we would have nuns advocating abortions and birth control and telling the Pope to shut up. Time for a house cleaning in the church.

Well, they are catholic nuns which means that they belong to a religion that is half Christianity and half sun god worship.
