Nuns Come Out Swinging & Claim Vatican Investigation Is Causing ‘Scandal & Pain’ for Catholics

NEW YORK (The Blaze/AP) — The Blaze told you back in April about the Vatican’s decision to overall a large-scale group of U.S. nuns after allegations of anti-Catholic stances on a variety of issues. In the wake of controversy, the largest umbrella group for the female faith leaders officially responded on Friday.
Railing heavily against the charges waged against them, the organization said that the church-ordered overhaul of their group is based on unsubstantiated claims from a flawed investigation that has caused “scandal and pain” for Roman Catholics.
The Leadership Conference of Women Religious, which represents about 57,000 sisters, said they will bring their concerns to the Vatican orthodoxy watchdog, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in a meeting scheduled for June 12 in Rome.
In April, the Vatican agency concluded an investigation of more than two years by concluding the group has “serious doctrinal problems,” including taking positions that undermined Catholic teaching on the all-male priesthood, marriage and homosexuality.

A screen shot from the LCWR web site
The national board of the nuns’ group issued the statement, its first since the Holy See ordered the overhaul, after a three-day private meeting.
“Board members concluded that the assessment was based on unsubstantiated accusations and the result of a flawed process that lacked transparency,” the statement said. “Moreover, the sanctions imposed were disproportionate to the concerns raised and could compromise their ability to fulfill their mission.”
The Vatican reprimand prompted an outpouring of support for nuns by Catholics and non-Catholics. Vigils, protests and prayer services defending the sisters have been held nationwide, including outside the U.S. embassy of the Holy See in Washington.

“The report has furthermore caused scandal and pain throughout the church community, and created greater polarization,” the board said.

Pope Benedict XVI
In an interview, the president of the organization, Sister Pat Farrell, declined to comment on specifics of the report or go into detail about what the group considers the flaws in the findings. She said the organization would formally respond to the investigation after discussions with members at regional meetings and a national assembly in August.
“The mood at the board meeting was one of deep, deep sadness about this document that has come from the Vatican, but there was also a spirit of deep prayer and reflection and sincere searching together,” Farrell said. “It is a concern of ours that we would be faulted for what we don’t say. I don‘t think we’re talking about a matter of orthodoxy but a matter of emphasis.”
The meeting in Rome is planned with Cardinal William Levada, an American who leads the congregation, and Seattle Archbishop Peter Sartain, appointed by the Vatican to take authority over the group. Sartain will oversee rewriting the group’s statutes, reviewing all its plans and programs – including approving speakers — and ensuring the organization properly follows Catholic prayer and ritual.
Farrell has been a sister for 47 years. She said she was “stunned at the severity” of the reprimand.
“I didn’t think I would ever see anything like this,” Farrell said. “Truthfully, I’m glad my mother is not alive to see this unfolding. She would be heartbroken.”

Does repentance play a role?
Is baptism necessary?
Are the commandments just suggestions?
Do we have to love our neighbor?
I could go on, but I think I proved my point that much more than faith is required. It may only be the first step.
I believe in the right to worship as I see fit, and I offer others the same privilege.
I may not agree with the Catholics, but to belittle them would be wrong.

I tire of self proclaimed righteous people condemning people to hell for sinning differently than they do, or belonging to a different church.
You have to realize that your interpretation of the Bible is not the only interpretation.
You belittle people who don’t conform to your idea of of what the scriptures say.
I cannot think of a sadder existence than trying to be the moral police of the world. What a sad and friendless life you must lead, running around proclaiming your version of the truth.
But, at least your ‘saved’!! You are pathetic!!
I bet your pastor Billy Bob is practically Jesus reincarnated and any one who disagrees is the devil in disguise!
I rarely go off on people, but you evangelicals are ruining this country with your “my way or straight to hell” rhetoric.

It the original Faith that Jesus set up is a cult then ALL Christian Denominations are cults by the mere fact that they broke off from the supposed “cult”. Where do you think the Bible came from? Where does the understanding of the Trinity come from? Where does the understanding of heaven & hell come from? The early Christians for the first 300-600 years did not have a Bible to learn from. It was the early Church that taught & converted the pagans with no Bible. So go back and learn true history before you stick out your ignorance for the world to see. You don’t need works to be saved ! believe on Jesus and what He did on the cross only ! Works come later , so that you can be that shinning light to others . Here are things you don’t need to do : kneel down , stand up , use holy water, make the sign of the cross ,shake bells, prey to Marry or any other statue including the one that you think looks like Jesus , repeat words , light candles etc. Just come to Jesus , it was his blood that bought you .

14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?
15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?
17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Posted on June 4, 2012 at 11:46amHollywood – actually, purgatory does NOT come from the Apocrypha. That is a Protestant myth. The dogma of purgatory was just another example of Rome’s humanist corruption after it separated itself from the Body of Christ.
The term “apocrypha” usually relates to several books of the OT, the source of which was the LXX. Funny thing – the LXX was the ORIGINAL OT USED BY THE CHURCH, and is the source of the VAST majority of OT quotes in the NT. So, yeah, the so-called “apocrypha,” of the OT, WERE considered canon and were so considered for centuries. Only the heretics cut them out.

Thanks for the comment Satan. Appearently you would like to lead God’s people astray.
Jesus Christ’s own words in Mathew 25: 41-46.
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.
Do not dare say no works are required of God’s people. For while it is true that we are only saved through Christ’s mercy, we can be denied salvation by ignoring God’s Word.
But then the devil would like us to believe we can deny his Word and live as non-repentant sinners.

In 20 years, most of them will simply have disappeared through attrition. If it were not for the grave harm they do to souls, including their own, I would be inclined to leave them alone. Yet it is because of this great harm and scandal they bring then the assistance and guidance which, due to their grave and persistent errors, can only come directly from the Holy See is the only way to help correct them or, at the very least, guide those whom they lead astray back.

RPP did not say the “Roman” Catholic Church. He said the Catholic Church.
Yes the Catholic church was around since Jesus started it. See Matthew 16 and Acts.
The church moved to Rome, some time before 67AD, according to historians and Acts 28. The church had extended into Rome, and after the martyr of Peter in 67 AD, the disciples stayed there and continued to evangelize.
The term Catholic Church was first coined in 110AD by Ignatius of Antioch, a bishop of Antioch ordained by Peter.
The term “Roman Catholic” was not used until much later roughly 1618.

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God’s wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them”
I pray that you will read more of scripture and not just focus on anchor verses (John 3:16, John 3:36, Rom 3:28, Rom 10:9) used to deceive people they they are saved by faith alone (James 2:14-27) and obedience to God is not necessary. God Bless

The Roman Catholic Church has been using the Bible and Traditions since the early time of the Christian church(Most of you evangelical’s do not use (Tradition) . Today! it still uses the same teachings and wonder why the Catholic Church is the greatest, biggest, strongest, growing christian church out there since day one. Someone is jealous! get a life and unite with the true church! or be in an alliance within.Without the Catholic Church you evangelicals protestants could not hold down the fort! There is ONE FATHER, God the Almighty; ONE SON, The Word with God from the beginning; ONE SPIRIT, the Holy Spirit, One in Being with the Father and the Son–a triune God! There is ONE CHURCH, “His Church” founded on Jesus, The Cornerstone, overseen by Peter the rock (who was made “solid” in Christ through the Father–Peter, a man that failed on his own throughout Jesus time here on earth!), is guided by Jesus through the Holy Spirit, “teacher, consoler, defender, guide.”
After His Resurrection, Jesus gave His disciples this Great Commission: “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’” Matthew 28:18-20
Repeatedly the Apostles, the Disciples, and Paul remind Jesus followers to “pass on” ALL WE HAVE TAUGHT YOU as seen in the above and in I Corinthians 11:2, II Thessalonians 2:2 & 15, Tutis 1:9, I John, chapter 2:26-27, written long before much of the New Covenant was written, and definitely before it was compiled (through the Catholic Church!).
“Sola Scriptura” IS NOT IN THE BIBLE! Therefore I ask my fellow “Bible readers/”scholars,” what does John 6:25-68 REALLY SAY, ESPECIALLY vs. 52, 60, & 66 (keep them in context)?
“Memorial” YES, but

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 8:29pm@Enicom, too bad that is not what these nuns are doing. Instead they are trying to help kill babies and change the story of Genesis to read “Adam and Steve”.
Take your silliness to where it belongs. Oh wait, there is no such place.

Posted on June 3, 2012 at 5:22pm@ enicom (or whatever your name is. . . )
The particular “Sister” (not officially “nun” since they don’t live in a nunnery or monastery), featured in this artice is NEITHER “working with the poor” or “healing the sick”! In fact, she is “campaigning” for her own wants and wishes, and rallying others to be disrespectful and disgruntled against the Church that she says everytime she celebrates a service that includes the Nicene Creed, she believe in and supports–a Church with four “marks”–it is One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic. Yet this organization and the representatives of it have continually since the 1970′s voiced their opinions and their unsupport of the Church they say they embrace.
The Church has in repeatedly but gently shown them the error or their ways, but “they want what they want when they want it”!
So following the form of discipline for believers and within the Church as outlined in the Bible, Matthew 18:15-18 and 2 Thessalonians 3:6-15, the discipline of this group of wayward purportedly Catholic organization is at the point of “public correction.”
Finally, JESUS NOR TRADITION NOT THE BIBLE TEACHES SOCIAL JUSTICE, rahter, religious justice is exampled in the Beatitudes of Matthew 5, and elsewhere throughout both the Old Covenant and the New Covenenat. God will not tolerate less than rightousness in His prescence, that‘s why Jesus died for man’s sins. Does that mean those who accept this premise for themselves are perfect? B

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 9:57pmWhen John Paul II visited the U.S. for the first time as Pope, I was proud to participate in the Mass held at the “circle” in front of the Basillica of Saints Peter and Paul and hear this holy and humble man in the early days of his time as shepherd of a large and changing flock, speak on the readings from the Bible for that day, and expound on we the people as the Church of God.
A couple of days (I believe after), I was APPALLED when while he was visiting Washington, D.C., a nun in a “non-habit” suit, honored his presence, but spoke to him about changes she and others wanted of the Church that were demanding and demeaning in comparison to the already honored callings of all women within the Church. I was embarrassed that some did not understand that women, dedicated Religious and laity, already possessed gifts for the service to the people of God and those not yet part of God’s family. That all women are called to serve in so many ways from raising the future Church through their children and grandchildren; to feeding and caring for family members, friends and others who needed their help; to teaching, caring for the sick and less than skillful, to “praying always” as they go throughout their day as a dedicated Religious person, as a wife and mother, or as a single person young or old.
These individuals are self-serving and selfish in their understanding of the Church and their demands to have their own way! To whom “much is given, much is demanded.” (Luke 12

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 12:29am@Barber2: After her last statement and some comments here, I looked into that as well. Pelosi is essentially excommunicated due to her continual statements that are in opposition of Catholic doctrine. She can call herself Catholic all she wants, that doesn’t mean she is. While it would be nice for the Pope to publicly announce that her and those like her have been excommunicated, that would be a mere formality and unnecessary.

Besides the Chucrch has no business interfering with civil laws in our Democracy.

1) What does it matter when the church proclaimed life begins at conception? Does that make it any more or less true.
2) Your statement about Christ and the Catholic nuns being for Social Justice is meaningless. The term is loosely defined at best and I’d like to see a scriptural reference for your point as well.
3) Your statement of the leadership being out of touch is meaningless. How so? On what points?
4) The church is not interfering with civil laws, the govt is interfering in the church.
5) We don’t live in a democracy we live in a Constitutional Republic.
Hope that helps.

Posted on June 2, 2012 at 12:32am@Bernbart: What you don’t understand is that just because they made the statement in 1900, doesn’t mean it became true in 1900. It has always been true, they just didn’t make the statement until 1900. Similar to the Founding Fathers that made the statements of all men being created equal with certain unalienable rights. It didn’t start being true in 1776. It was always true, it just wasn’t written in that way until that point.

Posted on June 1, 2012 at 7:55pmWhat a dope. The Vatican is feeding the world.
Bankers‘ best guesses about the Vatican’s wealth put it at $10 billion to $15 billion [The Catholic Churches in the US raises $5.5 Billion every weekend, so the Total Wealth of the Vatican is small in comparison]. Of this wealth, Italian stockholdings alone run to $1.6 billion, 15% of the value of listed shares on the Italian market. The Vatican has big investments in banking, insurance, chemicals, steel, construction, real estate. Dividends help pay for Vatican expenses and charities such as assisting 1,500,000 children and providing some measure of food and clothing to 7,000,000 needy Italians.
The church is not a spa. The pope does not play 100 rounds of golf on the taxpayer dollar, like obama.

Posted on June 3, 2012 at 1:47amNo Inblack, the pope just travels around, lives in his palace and sits on billions of wealth. Those are billions in the double digits. And then they whine at the rest of the world to give them money. Lead by example. But the vatican is just as bad as the rest. In some EU countries the church whines about the horrible, horrible poverty in those countries, together with the rabid left wing.
Btw, the 10 billion guess is ridiculous. Alone the property they own is worth a lot more than that.
But sure defend the fascist vatican. Yes, fascist. When Ratzinger was elected, who got to vote? The church members? Of course not, they are just sheep to be milked and oppressed.
Ban all religion. Put all religion on trial. Keep the trial based on facts. Find out which religion actually benefits mankind. Current “Christianity” wouldn’t survive long. It has long since moved away from what Jesus preached and has been hijacked by power hungry fascists for centuries.
