NY Police Officer Shoots and Kills Son He Thought Was An Intruder

A police officer in New York shot and killed his son, who investigators say he thought was an intruder.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the 59-year-old Rochester man and Parry Police Department Officer was staying in a motel in Old Forge in the Adirondack Mountains where the shooting occurred Saturday morning. The man called 9-1-1 to report the shooting early Saturday, when he said he just shot someone he thought was an intruder. The intruder turned out to be his 37-year-old son, who is now dead. Troopers say the officer used his department-issued .45-caliber Glock handgun in the shooting. The shooter has been hospitalized and the investigation is continuing.

An ambulance paramedic told the Utica Observer-Dispatch that when he arrived on the scene, the father was “very distraught.” The paper reports that the crime is Herkimer County’s first homicide of the year.

Following the horrific shooting in Colorado Friday, debate has been renewed among political commentators in regards to gun control.

This story is tragic beyond belief. I cannot even imagine…

The fact is that for every story of some person saving the day and preventing a crime because they had a gun, there are 1000 or 10,000 of people who got killed by gun who wouldn’t have otherwise. People who shoot themselves by mistake. Or on purpose. Children killed by playing with guns or adults cleaning guns.

Everybody says that Americans would still kill other Americans if they didn’t have guns. But you don’t hear stories about somebody climbing up on the UT tower like Whitman and killing people with a hammer do you? Nobody walks into theatre and kills twelve people with a knife. Unlike anything the Founders ever imagined in the single shot musket days, a person can kill hundreds of people in a minute with the guns we have today.

Guns are here to stay. I accept that. Actually I don’t have a problem with anyone owning a gun. But as long as people have the ability kill 100 people with a single magazine and then reload and kill another 100, these things are going to happen. Having the ability to kill 100 people in a minute or two does not add to anyone’s ability to protect themselves from an assailant. Having that ability serves only one purpose: to kill a lot of innocent people in a short time.

We‘ve seen it used before and we’ll see it used again. The thing we won’t see is that used for a moral purpose.

@JZS Join the NRA and You will see that guns do have a moral purpose… It’s called self defense, meaning protecting yourself and your family and people in danger of being killed by Evil people like the Colorado shooter…Oh,…. you will never see the stories of guns being used this way in the news, you have to read armed citizen to get the stories….That’s why gun free zones are stupid and make no sense whatsoever…..Think about it….. let it sink in for a few days…..and the hopefully common sense will make sense……..

In Mexico it’s a 30 year mandatory sentence for possessing a firearm. Seems to be working out well there for the average law abiding citizen. The cartels don’t have to worry about getting shot. That theater in Colorado did not allow any permit holders to carry on the premises. That worked out well for one mans purpose. What type of gun did Tim McVey use again?

Most hunting accidents occur because the shooter did not know what their target was….Never point your gun at something that you can’t see or are not sure of!!!! If you have been drinking lock that gun up…If you have kids you have to be twice as careful….In other words KNOW YOUR TARGET!!

I cannot belive any person would intentionally murder their own flesh and blood although it happens sometimes..but in the case of someone walking in on you at night..it would be an easy mistake..you would think that the son would have said something or knocked on the door especially knowing that his dad was an armed police officer, and you would have thought the officer would have said “freeze” I have a gun”….there was negligence on both parts.. I am sure the officer is torn up unless of couse he had a big insurance policy on his son..that could change the whole perspective. THat has been a motive of many a murder..between married persons..remember the policeman in NY who went through the wives with insurance policies? Same with some mom murdering her children for either the attention or the policies..I have seen this go both ways.. I hope that this was just one of those unfortunate accidents..If it was..my heart goes out to the dad..It would be a hard thing to live with. But what are they going to do..ban guns from law enforcement now?

Something may be “fishy” here, but you then jump to irrational conclusions with no evidence, making anything you say suspect. If he WAS drunk, a blood test would reveal it, and it COULD still be accidental. Then you state it was purposeful murder. Why would he plan a murder, then get drunk and risk screwing up. You make NO sense.

Just to give the benefit of doubt, it’s possible he was in the middle of a nasty divorce and staying in a hotel until he could find his own place. His son could have just found out and decided to visit his father. He could also have been having an affair, and the son found out he was at the hotel and wanted to confront him. There are just too many possibilities for speculation. There is more to this story than is being reported. But you can bet the left will have us like British Police Officers….Bobbies have a night stick, so they yell stop and if you don’t stop, they yell stop again.

I know this is what makes it into the papers, but domestic violence, domestic abuse, sexual and physical abuse of children happens all the time in all sorts of families from every strata of society. So agreed, these cases are what we hear about in the National news but truth be told the vast majority of these cases don’t even make it to the news. So I question whether the “impression” is accurate.

Yes, it is. Cons love to talk big about what they would do if they had a gun, and an intruder tried to break into their house. Well, what happened here is actual much more likely to happen, statistically speaking. Also more likely is that a child in the home will find the gun and accidentally shooting themselves or a friend.

actually “vance” statistics show FAR more home defense scenarios ending well, and lives saved than not. I can cite MANY sources, but you just made it up. Over 1 million home defenses, most not ending in death occur every year. 65 million own guns, yet few accidental shootings occur, in fact of all the shooting deaths in the US,less than 2% are accidental (FBI). This was a legally issued gun, not one subject to controls. Pedal your lies elsewhere.

Second, Indians he met were 3 tribes, 2 at war with each other, the third a nearby group of raiding canibals, not the peaceful friendlies you describe. Settlers did not need indians to survive, as they already were farmers when they came. it was thier attempt at socialism that nearly wiped them out (read a book). that fairy tale went out with school plays at Thanksgiving. Explain to me how Gun Control would prevent a police officer from using a service weapon? Idiotic!

It wouldn’t. It wouldn’t have helped in Aurora. The truth is that in this case, the guy thought he was protecting himself and for all we know he was. In the case of Aurora this guy was going to find a way, and as it turns out if having a gun wasn’t the least of it, it was certainly part of a larger plan. This is what the gun control people do not understand–or maybe. cynically they do–the first thing a totalitarian government does is disarm the public. This in the end is the promise of the right to bear arms–to prevent an abusive government to rule without consequence or the ability of the opposition to mount substantial resistance. Does this come with consequence?, absolutely. I have to think about it more, but I am not sure that my government needs to keep me safe, I think maybe it needs to keep me able to be self reliant, and ultimately free. I have to think about it. I don’t know that my urge for safety overwhelms my need for the government to leave me alone. I surely do want for the government to leave me alone.

Woe, Short view is the government protects us from foreign invasion. The second Amendment protects us from within our our boarders from those who wish us harm including the government. What has been lost is we control it. It does not control us.

Yathink–I’m right there with you. I know that the 2nd amendment is always held forth as being an archaic accommodation for the possibility of foreign invasion when America was still small and relatively weak. But whether or not the writers had the imagination to envision a time when the American government would take action to abuse its own is always unclear. Truth be told, they had just been abused by their own government (the British government) and had to raise arms to protect themselves and in the process gained independence. In the process the British were reconceptualized as “foreigners”. The lesson to me is that when your own government seeks to indenture you that makes them both toxic and foreign. So I think the writers were well aware of this and so–the right to bear arms. But I realize this is an arguable opinion. I also realize that I want to be safe, I don’t want to have to worry that going to a movie, or going to work, or walking down the street will end my life, maybe that however is the price paid for living in the times we do.

I beg to differ with you. The 2nd Amendment was designed to protect the citizens of the newly formed United States of America from a government that might turn tyrannical . Secondarily it was about foreign invasions, but the primary deterrent there was, and is, the Armed Forces of the United States.

It’s an important distinction best summed up in this quote. “When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.” (Thos. Jefferson) Peace.

How tragic, may his son RIP.

What made this police officer jump the gun and shoot before he identified the person. The report says early morning and it seems if he was in a motel the person either had a key or he would yell out, I have a gun. What if it was a maid who thought the room was empty and wanted to get an early start.

A motel room is not that big so the officer must have been in the dark. It seems that the officer failed to identify himself or identify his target or if the target was a threat. It would not be unheard of for the hotel staff to use their pass key and mistakenly enter an occupied room.
Was the son staying with him? Why would his son enter the room? Did the son have a key? There is something very suspicious about all of this. I do not buy it.

Something’s not adding up,if the son had a key he wasn’t intruding and the father would have expected him to enter the room at some point.

Odd Story. Why was he staying in a hotel? Why was his son entering the room in the early hours? Was any intoxication involved on anyone’s part? Has the makings of a movie or short story–clearly the back story is everything. Still despite all the literary possibilities the truth is that this is one of the saddest “news items” in a long time. So sorry for the family, all good will to all involved. Heart felt condolences to all involved for every reason.

Old Forge is half way across the state from Wyoming County, so I assume they were on vacation. It’s also the only town with any real night life in the very rustic Herkimer County, a part of the sate that tourists would visit mostly to go camping, hunting and fishing. If they were staying in a motel there on a Friday night, I would guess that they had been doing some drinking.

You have the same ideas I do, but that comes from watching movies and reading fiction. I suspect some degree of intoxication was involved–it usually is. but WE DON’T KNOW ANYTHING. As much as I join you in generating a story to explain this, it is a tendency that can potentially harm the coverage and more important the family. I am trying to exercise restraint in this way, I hope others will as well.

I do know a little that doesn’t come from watching movies and reading fiction because I live in New York State and I’ve been to Old Forge.
