NY Prof Installs ‘Eye’ in the Back of His Head

Call it crazy. Call it stupid. Call it ingenious. But one NYC professor is calling his decision to install a camera in the back of his head “art.”

Wafaa Bilal, an Iraqi-born photography professor at New York University, had the procedure done at a piercing studio last month for an art project commissioned by a museum in Doha, Qatar, he told CNN. The “procedure” also involved Bilal inserting a metal plate into his head.

“This will expose the unspoken conditions we face,” Bilal said Thursday. “A project like this is meant to establish a dialogue about surveillance.”

Bilal calls the project “The 3rd I.” The camera, which magnetically attaches to a mount, beams a picture a minute back to the Arab Museum of Modern Art. That‘s possible because the camera’s cord runs to a computer that Bilal carries around in a custom-made shoulder bag.

To allay privacy concerns at the NYU, the university has mandated that Bilal cover up the camera with a lens cap while teaching on campus.

“I see myself as a mirror reflecting some of the social conditions that we ignore,” he said.

    I am a Mom & a grandmother. I have eyes in the back of my head & my kids know it. It’s a 6th sense. You know when something is wrong. There is something wrong with this too. Sneaky & dishonest comes to mind.

No need to install a cam by a body piercer onto your noggin, then call it art and still have the same social conditions forward or backwards. Call it what it really is Mr. NY Professor… the battle cries for “social justice” described as art. Whatever… hope the poor schmuck doesn’t get too many migraines for his own stupidity.. Next……………

      You would be surprised at what kind of education are children from Kindergarten and up are receiving. I doubt very much there is any real history being taught anymore. I mean we can’t even have flags in the classroom any more. As far as this idiot goes, I think it is spooky too! I wouldn’t be surprised if Michelle and Barack invite him to the White House for a tour and give him some sort of art award. Progressives love this artsy fartsy stuff. Stay tuned…..

    I wonder if this is a ploy for this guy to bypass airport security. He could blame metal detectors going off on the camera instead of something else he may be carrying around in his mouth. This thought maybe a little outside the box, but it wouldn’t surprise me.

    Oh, great, now they will have more evidence that we are infidels. Isn’t there some rule or law about filming people without their knowledge? Didn’t they go bonkers when Van Jones was being filmed? I’m all for weird “art?” within reason but something just doesn’t seem right about this. A security issue when he goes to airports, large buildings, places that have alot of people. I think they need to pat down this guy’s head (x-rays, airport security, courthouse security) ’cause this is spooky.

      Oddly enough, I wasn’t surprise to find out that the “professor” was Iranian born.

      Wonder what they are going to “catch” with those shots? Won‘t it be fascinating when he’s lecturing in class and the images are of a blackboard, greenboard or maybe the front wall of a lecture hall? And when he is sleeping? All those great moments of a dark room, and a pillow. True art! Wonder what happens when he‘s using the men’s room?

      TAQUOSHI, shortened your name? Have missed you, or so I thought, but I think you have been here all along. Like I said, isn’t there some rule about permission to film and release? These pix are going straight back to Iraq and I certainly would be worried about who is on the other end of that computer. Where is homeland security on this?

      This is very strange. Why would a museum in Qatar fund such an “art project”?
      Can anyone find anything about this museum? Because all I could find were a bunch of sites about the architectural firm, and a site in Arabic….very strange…

      What‘s even more insane is that a doctor DIDN’T do this – he went to a PIERCER! As if someone who learned how to poke holes in ear lobes and belly buttons is qualified to do prosthetic surgery?!? What do you bet it gets infected and he dies from this ridiculous experiment?
