Despite Ethics Charges, Rangel Secures Dem Nomination

(AP) — Embattled Rep. Charles Rangel prevailed in a crowded Democratic primary Tuesday, with voters in his New York City district signaling they are willing to stand by the 40-year House veteran despite more than a dozen ethics charges pending against him.

Rangel beat back five challengers including Adam Clayton Powell IV, a state assemblyman and son of the legendary Harlem figure Rangel defeated in 1970. Rangel is all but guaranteed re-election in November in this heavily Democratic district.

With 83 percent of precincts reporting, Rangel had 52 percent to 24 percent for Powell, his nearest competitor.

It was the first time Rangel, 80, has faced voters since a House ethics panel charged him with 13 violations last summer. Rangel has vigorously fought the charges despite pleas from some Democrats, including President Barack Obama, that he consider stepping aside.

Rangel faces allegations that include using House stationery to solicit money for a New York college center named after him; failing to disclose at least $600,000 in assets and income in a series of inaccurate reports to Congress; using a rent-subsidized New York residential use apartment for a campaign office; and failing to report and pay taxes on rental income from a beach villa in the Dominican Republic.

Rangel’s district includes Harlem, long the political and cultural hub of New York’s black community. But the area has grown younger and more diverse in recent years.

The 48-year-old Powell, who was born in Puerto Rico and speaks fluent Spanish, had hoped to take advantage of the district’s changing demographics. But he was bedeviled by problems of his own, including a thin legislative record and sluggish fundraising.

It goes to show, that to restore honor to America, we need 2 call people to restore honor in themselves. Our country needs to again acknowledge & value truth (although with a small t). It may be unreasonable to expect America to unite under Christianity, but why can’t we all (even atheists & agnostics) agree on the value of values themselves, like love, charity, diligence, integrity, honesty, faithfulness. Who doesn’t want those in their employer, bank loan officer, neighbor, and for God’s sake, government leaders?

what else do you expect from a “heavily Democratic district”. this just translates as “people so used to goverment handouts paid for with our taxes that they have no clue how to survive without them.” you really expect for them to vote their meal ticket out?

I wish the republicans would shut the hell up demeaning the regular folk that are winning with help from the Tea Party. how dare they say they will not support Odonnell at all. Nada! People have the leaders and government that they deserve. Rangel is a reflection of the people who voted for him, and the people are a reflection of Rangel. Unfortunately, Rangel has impact on the entire nation, not just his own district. The corruption and living off the backs of taxpaying Americans will continue for Rangel and his constituents.

Doesn’t matter, his constituents are as crooked as Rangel.

Rangel still must face those ethics charges. This will not be pretty. Rangel’s power is severely diminished, he is tainted, he smells, all he will be doing is keeping his congressional seat warm.

Apparently, New York is less concerned with ethics, and more concerned with what they can have for free from the government(the rest of us). A sad reminder of how a carpet ****** like Hillary got elected there. The only thing she knows about New York is shopping, entertainment, and food. I‘ve argued this point every time I’ve worked in the city.

Doesn’t Rangel the Thief hail from Harlem? I don’t know NY, but isn‘t Harlem still mostly on the ’handout’ rolls? If so, they should be raising up a 3rd or 4th generation of welfare artists and ‘Slimy Chuck’ has been ensuring their free money for just about as long as they’ve been alive.

If we don’t remove these old cancers from our Government, the body is never going to get better.
