NY Times Columnist Has a Dream: Maybe Beck and Fox News Will Break Up!

As a recovering TV news anchor myself, I remember the years of staring at overnight Nielsen ratings and learning the importance of decimal points. These days, I’m more attentive to similarly arcane numerical constructions like UVs (that would be monthly Unique Visitors to a website), but I need a fix for my old TV ratings addiction, so I do look at the cable news ratings with interest.
The daily tally is, without much variation, a staggering account of Fox News dominating the space. The flow of the Fox News line-up is a testament to the network’s trust in the convictions and creative visions of a truly unique group of hosts and their dedicated production teams. And I’m always amazed at the consistency of the ratings — particularly Glenn’s. The news cycle brings big swings to those numbers, but you can always look for that plumb line trend.
In the last few weeks, however, we have seen two trends in the pound-on-Glenn Beck front. One group is jumping on Glenn for being some sinister doomsayer who is bad for conservatives. On this front, I see lots of name calling but little serious argumentation. The second attack front is trying to whip up a ratings disaster scenario that portends grim fates for Glenn Beck and Fox News. The argumentation here is even less serious. But, you can’t stop them from trying!
So, I guess I should not have been surprised that a prominent columnist/reporter for the The New York Times would decide to jump in on this front. I have read David Carr for decades and I respect him a great deal. I can still disagree with significant portions of his reasoning here. But, no doubt, the hypothetical musings he’s putting into play will only spur relentless new rounds of speculation (anyone want to bet on the number of mentions Carr gets on MSNBC tomorrow?).
But read it for yourself and comment thoughtfully!
Almost every time I flipped on television last week, there was a deeply angry guy on a running tirade about the conspiracies afoot, the enemies around all corners, and how he alone seemed to understand what was under way.
While it’s true that Charlie Sheen sucked up a lot of airtime last week, I’d been watching Glenn Beck, the Fox News host who invoked Hezbollah, socialists, the price of gas, Shari’a law, George Soros, Planned Parenthood, and, yes, Charlie Sheen, as he predicted a coming apocalypse.
Mr. Beck, a conservative Jeremiah and talk-radio phenomenon, burst into television prominence in 2009 by taking the forsaken 5 p.m. slot on Fox News and turning it into a juggernaut. A conjurer of conspiracies who spotted sedition everywhere he looked, Mr. Beck struck a big chord and ended up on the cover of Time magazine and The New York Times Magazine, and held rallies all over the country that were mobbed with acolytes. He achieved unheard-of ratings, swamped the competition and at times seemed to threaten the dominion of Bill O’Reilly and Sean Hannity at Fox.
But a funny thing happened on the way from the revolution. Since last August, when he summoned more than 100,000 followers to the Washington mall for the “Restoring Honor” rally, Mr. Beck has lost over a third of his audience on Fox — a greater percentage drop than other hosts at Fox. True, he fell from the great heights of the health care debate in January 2010, but there has been worrisome erosion — more than one million viewers — especially in the younger demographic.

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 3:24amI don‘t always agree with GB’s personal opinions but you cannot fault his stories they are well researched and he always has the video to back it up. If Glenn has done nothing else it has gotten me and I am sure millions like me to actually do research that we should have been doing for years. Our naivete as a nation is why we are in the position that we are in now, and to tell you the truth I believe it is much worse than most want to believe. I heard Dicky Durbin say on one of the Sunday talk shows that we can’t get out of this crisis just by cutting spending, well how the hell do our supposed betters think that we are going to get out of this mess? Have the dems and progressive reps gone so far off the deep end that they don’t understand broke? Do they not understand that it is not the people of this great nation that are broken, that it is actually a government gone wild which is bankrupting our country? I pray daily for this country that I proudly served and love, I just ask that I be able to leave some semblance of the american dream for my kids and grandkids.

Glenn`s time spot is an odd one for us here in the west. Do they have a way to count tivo and dvr replays ? Glenn has never been as popular because watching him makes you hungry enough to read up and form your own opinions without being spoon-fed a line of bull.

I am in complete agreement with your comments about Glenn Beck, he has truly helped open the eyes of many Americans on several issues now facing this country, especially the out of control national debt crisis. Having ran several small businesses in past years, it always makes me laugh when the tax and spend lliberal elites propose solving huge financial problems by adding several poorly managed new government agencies and programs.. I would ask them all ,why not just better manage the failing way over budget programs we have had for years? Glenn ‘s TV program has been informative, direct , honest and a blesssing for many former Obama voters in Florida for sure, I have met and talked with many of them. Go Glenn , keep up the great work. I respect your efforts!

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 2:36amOMG! Newsflash: New York Times breaks up with New York!
(New York) The venerable liberal bastion publication, The New York Times, may now go it alone as just, “Times.” The rumor mill has it that both Newark and Orlando have made offers to capture The New York Times and move it to their city… but who needs a city? “Our city is the progressive universe,” said NY Times Editor In Chief, Numb B. Skullion. If the break up takes place, estimates are that current NY Times readership may drop 40%, which would represent moderate New Yorkers who currently only subscribe to the paper to wipe their **s and do a crossword puzzle at the same time. Currently, The New York Times is cheaper than toilet paper. “If our ‘toilet paper’ subscribers feel they need to jump to the New York Post just to wipe their **s, then so be it,” said Skullion. “Just remember our crossword puzzle is the best… and I wouldn’t trade the **s of a moderate for the **s of our loyal progressives for a million bucks!” The Orlando Sentinel reports that Disney may purchase the paper and move it to Orlando, spinning it into a national mainstream rag like USA Today. “We’d take it more mainstream,” said Disney CEO Ruff Odor. “You know, more stories about animals — racoons, squirrels, dogs trapped in mine shafts… like CNN. I mean, look what it’s done for them…” (For More, Turn To Page 51.)

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 11:49amI was there too and I firmly believe the total was a whole lot closer to one million. There were 500,000 people just in the immediate reflection pool areas. But I was sooo proud when I saw the pic from the Washington Monument and then remembered how pristine the mall was when the rally ended. It is us, those who are proud of this Country, so proud that we won’t even leave a cigarette butt on the grounds of our “hallowed” monuments, that are going to save this Country. As Glenn always says, the Trust has no Agenda! And the only Agenda we who were at the 8-28 Rally had was restoring this Country to the Country envisioned by our founders and restoring ourselves to the people we need to be, who God wants us to be. As to David Carr, he just made himself look like a true fool in two ways: by reciting the false numbers at the 8-28 Rally and by trying to convince his readers that Glenn Beck was “on his way out!” When any left-wing news person or blogger says there were 100,000 at 8-28, I envision them getting big guilt lumps in their throats as they are writing it or saying it. Oh, wait, that would entail that they actually have a conscience about telling lies and we all know there is no conscience there when it comes to lies about conservatives! Thus, the telling difference between a Conservative and a Progressive: moral values!

So unless the columnist (or anyone else who makes these claims) includes those figures so we can get a complete story, I would guess that they have an agenda to smear Beck/FNC.

I have to watch Glenn at 11 pm due to time zone, the left coast would go nuts if Glenn was put on in say Greta’s spot, or Hannity’s.
The three evening spots all repeat the prior shows content, if you put Glenn on later you would see even higher ratings for the reason all the Libs would be watching.
Though i will tell you living in the left coast, Glenn would pick up more viewers, the left coast soon to be the right coast. Libs are really conservatives in hiding.
How about it Fox, show some guts !

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 7:57amGee, Fox News, and Glenn Beck in particular, are DOMINATING the ratings and the liberals can’t figure out why. Maybe it’s because they “talk” to the people like they are INTELLIGENT, not like the lame stream media that “talks” to people like they are adolescents!!! AND, Fow, and Glenn in particular have a habit of TELLING THE TRUTH, and Glenn actually asks people to “do their own research, and don’t take (HIS) words for granted”, and that is a very powerful statement because it more or less let’s the viewers know that Glenn considers ORDINARY people to be intelligent enough to understand the ideas he is sharing. I’ve yet to hear Glenn talk down to anyone on his radio or tv show(s). He uses comedy to make a point, hell he even cries to make a point. I hope that Glenn stays on Fox for a long time to come, the American public needs special people like him.

I watch FOX/FNC… BECK, O’Reilly., Hannity… and Greta everyday single day and I DVR Beck “everyday” his non existent drop in ratings is just a wish list for the people he ……..“exposes”
“They” would “love” to be able to silence Glenn and all on the Fox network..they have web sites full of pages and pages of petitions etc; to silence anyone that has the balzz to disagree with the status quo and we are all well aware of this… hence Fox’s overall ratings ..

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 8:36amThey ridicule what Glenn says, but they can’t prove him wrong. Over a decade ago, I spent some time working for one of the few conservative NGO’s at the UN. I was shocked at the toxic soup of leftist organizations there, and shocked at the way the Clinton administration was carrying their water when they thought nobody was looking. In that venue, Soros was a little tin god. The way they talked about him, he was funding a lot of the nonsense.
I kept thinking that most Americans would likewise be shocked if they could see it, and that if everyone could just be waked up, we could stop this leftist juggernaut. Glenn is doing the hard, tedious job of educating people. He is right. We surround them. But, everyone has to understand what is going on.

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 8:50amThe one constant for all liberal media is that they don’t exercise the most effective tool to silence and deflect attention and that is to IGNORE! Beck has struck a cord against corruption and it appears to be sticking relatively in plain view to liberal legislators and their supporters. If Beck was of no consequence, then they would ignore him like the rest would a yapping puppy, BUT they can’t as they scurry to measure any impropriety to him and Fox to salvage any shred of dignity. If Beck had a better time slot in the afternoon, FOX would have all the viewers possible. Also, Nielsen ratings DO NOT encompass all those who DVR Beck’s show to watch later.
Liberals dominate the number of news outlets on all time slots but FAIL to reel in top ratings. Hmmmm, so flooding the networks with liberal feces isn’t proportionate to the ratings. Not only does this prove that there are vastly more conservative out there than liberals, but it also proves that us conservatives will seek out the truth even if only a couple of channels are giving it to us. Also, the majority of the country cannot watch Beck live as he airs at 5pm EST. That leaves 3 time zones that air it during normal working hours..hence DVRs. Lastly, there are many more liberals that watch Beck than conservatives who watch any other liberal loon. This is because we have heard the song and dance before and it is just aired the same way on all the liberal media shows.

Posted on March 7, 2011 at 11:23amI think one of the reasons in a drop in ratings (if there was one) has to do with several big cable companies having “glitches” in their DVR programming that randomly stopped recording Glenn’s show as a series. It happened to us twice and we had to bing how to “go around” the system. From what I could tell from others comments it happened on Charter, Comcast and I think the other was Direct TV, all at the same time, coincidence? Rrriiiight! The first time it happened in January, it took about 2 weeks before we figured it out then it happened again a couple of weeks ago. Seems to me this may have been orchestrated just to make this story. Who knows? The world is truly upside down these days. I will believe this story when Glenn, himself, confirms it – otherwise just more NYT drivel.

“why wont beck go on other shows or have diverse views on his?”
- – - – - – - – - – - – - -
First, you have to understand that Beck’s show is an opinion show… his opinion.
Second, have you watched shows that actually do this, like Sean Hanity when he has that radical imam on? How much information did Sean actually get that was not a talking point, lie or a spin? The answer is very, very little. As such, the vast bulk of the interview was wasted and so is the time spent doing it.
Besides, how many people do you think would give an honest interview of Beck? How many do you know would not try and use “gotcha” type questions merely to smear him? How many people do you think would actually come on his show and be honest about their plans and agendas?
Third, Glenn has enough videos and transcripts from these people that he does not need them on his show to make his point. They have already laid out their agenda and now Glenn is publicizing it and bringing it to light (something that they do not want). Why spend an hour interviewing someone if you already know before they even arrive that they will lie and spin the facts? Sounds like a waste to me.
Finally, to answer your question, both would be a waste of time and resources for little to no gain.

For a guy who the fine Blaze readers say has all the facts and speaks the truth, one would think he would have no troubles defending his point of veiw in open debate against a dissenting opinion. The Beck apologists who state he has videos and transcirpts of the people he doesn’t agree with are being disingenuous as everyone know quotes and video clips can be taken out of context. Most of the major pundits have the fortitude to have opposing views on their shows, except Beck and Rush. Ostensibly, Beck is the master of the one-sided argument.

The real issue at hand is to eliminate the appropriations that were hidden in the health care bill. To assume that the legislators didn’t know about this when they voted for the bill calls for a gullibility of epic proportions. I sincerely hope that Sean, Glenn, and Rush, (our only real voices in the media), don’t fall for the lefts attempted sidetracking of these vital issues. Let’s face facts, the American people were duped out of their children’s money by the socialist politicians and Obama by trickery included in the bill.
