NY Times Issues ‘Epic’ Corrections to Gore Vidal Obituary — and They Involve William F. Buckley

Gore Vidal NY Times obituary

Celebrated author and playwright Gore Vidal died Tuesday at the age of 86. (AP)

The New York Times on Wednesday issued a paragraph of corrections to its four-page obituary of Gore Vidal, the celebrated liberal playwright and author who died Tuesday. Simple name misspellings these were not: Michael Roston, the Times’ social media producer, even tweeted Wednesday night that the corrections were “epic” — and we’re inclined to agree:

An earlier version misstated the term Mr. Vidal called William F. Buckley Jr. in a television appearance during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It was crypto-Nazi, not crypto-fascist. It also described incorrectly Mr. Vidal’s connection with former Vice President Al Gore. Although Mr. Vidal frequently referred jokingly to Mr. Gore as his cousin, they were not related. And Mr. Vidal’s relationship with his longtime live-in companion, Howard Austen, was also described incorrectly.  According to Mr. Vidal’s memoir “Palimpsest,” they had sex the night they met, but did not sleep together after they began living together. It was not true that they never had sex.

“Apparently they made a few mistakes,” the Atlantic Wire writes, “but they might be the funniest mistakes attached to an obituary, ever, and they fit so well with the stories we’ve heard about Vidal.”

    Gore Vidal: GONE, FORGOTTEN.

I understand that he used to work in a candy factory. Apparently he packed fudge.

I did not know that it was so important to learn about what folks do inside their own bed chamber.. We are all people, …misguided, borderline lunatics, and staggering around bumping into walls believing that our own poo does not stink. Without a power greater than oneself, you get a bunch of folks unhappy at the imperfections of man..Look around, dominoes are teetering, I see many problems…including mine own. Don’t get me wrong, ..you made me laugh. Thanks.

I remember one very stupid movie something like Gattaca.
The typical value relocation tome wherein we are to believe the good somehow lies
outside of ourselfs and primarily in the way others see us.But you see only the best got to go
    to jupiter.What crap.Frankly I had no idea what a loon he was,otherwise not a d-dime of my

Vidal was a good writer, not the best, and he tried hard to be called the best. However that title is reserved for Shakespeare.

If you read everything Vidal wrote and only him you would lave a lefty slant of the world and be a flawed person. Eugene Luther Gore Vidal ( /ˌɡɔr vɨˈdɑːl/;[1][2] October 3, 1925 – July 31, 2012) was a liberal American author, playwright, essayist, screenwriter, and political activist. His third novel, The City and the Pillar (1948), outraged conservative critics as one of the first major American novels to feature unambiguous homosexuality. He also ran for political office twice and was a longtime political critic. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gore_Vidal

What’s new, this goes on all the time, slanting. Think NYT editorials vs the Wall Street Journals, or teachers, etc.

Any new work you read has to be read in the context of understanding what the author is about, their beliefs, standards, morality, etc. A socialist lefty author has that philosophy embedded in the new written material, either deliberate or by mental and creative osmosis. Vidal was very obvious and to go merrily along with his writing if proof of being susceptible to his liberal slant and a lack of moral fiber because people are not tuned into to his flaws and can’t pick up on them, or don’t know what flaws are. It becomes an accepted thing………like the homosexual battles going on now in the US. Once there was a plea for tolerance and now overt promo

I’m guessing that “verce of reason” wishes he was one of the boys that were buggered by vidal. Or is one of them. Hero worship somewhere else. Don’t you have a Chickfila or Christian church you planned to be protesting in front of? I hear your fellow code pinkos calling you.

It was Chomsky who called WFBJr a crypto-fascist, in a televised debate. You can find it on youtube.

On reflection I suspect Vidal‘s and Chomsky’s point was that they were being upfront about what they were, left socialists, and didn‘t much respect WFBJr’s unwillingness to admit his ‘right’ wing big government tendencies, (ie fascism) BECAUSE it stifled real debate. I think they had a point. Looking objectively it is not true that WFBJr was a free market, limited government guy. He liked big government that was bombing people and protecting US enterprise from being truly competitive.

I distinctly heard Gore Vidal threaten to kill ex-President G. W. Bush after Obama got in office.
The FBI investigated but nothing came of it. Later, Vidal denied the accusation but I heard it myself.
That, America, really sums up Gore Vidal.

And this is a story on the Blaze, why? Gore Vidal will always be a known and ‘respected’ author. An Intellectual ….. no. A sage of our time …… no. The test is ……. would civilization be less had Vidal been a carpenter? Possibly better. He may have swung a mean hammer. Frankly, as with most enjoying celebrity, what his thoughts or opinions are matters not.

      “Oh yea…Al Gore invented homosexuality…”

Here’s your fun history fact of the day! The term is actually believed to be written first by the Prussian Karl-Maria Kertbeny, who used it in 1869 Prussian penal code. The pamphlet was actually advocating to overturn Prussia’s anti-sodomy laws. The first usage of it in English was 1895 by Charles Gilbert Chaddock, who was translating from German to English a study of sexual practices.
