NY Times’ Krugman Blames Shooting on GOP, ‘Hate-Mongers’ Beck & Limbaugh

New York Times’ columnist Paul Krugman took to his blog site Saturday to blame Republicans and conservatives for the attempted murder of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.  Despite the somber occasion, Krugman chose to be combative and shamelessly used Saturday’s tragedy to berate those ideologically opposed to him.

Before any evidence came to light about who the shooter and what his motivations might be, Krugman assumed the act was politically motivated by disgruntled Republicans:

We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was. She’s been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that “the whole Tea Party” was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous “crosshairs” list.

Just yesterday, Ezra Klein remarked that opposition to health reform was getting scary. Actually, it’s been scary for quite a while, in a way that already reminded many of us of the climate that preceded the Oklahoma City bombing.

You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.

After Sarah Palin offered her condolences, Krugman fired back:

Update: I see that Sarah Palin has called the shooting “tragic”. OK, a bit of history: right-wingers went wild over anyone who called 9/11 a tragedy, insisting that it wasn’t a tragedy, it was an atrocity.

Apparently readers weren‘t happy with Krugman’s assessment, voicing their displeasure in the form of comments.

Update: I’m going to take down comments on this one; they would need a lot of moderating, because the crazies are coming out in force, and it’s all too likely to turn into a flame war.

In actuality, Saturday’s alleged shooter is described as a “very disturbed” individual who enjoys books such as “Mein Kampf” and “The Communist Manifesto.”  According to police reports, the suspect is also believed to have done drugs in the past and was rejected by the Army when he tried to enlist in Dec. 2008.

    1): I don’t think “hate crimes” exist. If you shoot & kill another person that’s the horrible crime. What possible difference does it make what the insane motive might be?

    2) Why is “hate” only attributable to whites on the right? The New Black Panther Party doesn’t hate? Give me a break!!

    I don’t think I have ever hated anyone in my life. Not really. Even in combat – they were trying to kill me or my buddies so I did everything I could to kill them first. The left seems to have no problem with “crazies” unless they aren’t on the left.

    The right sure as hell isn’t always correct but neither is the left. We have to find more grown-ups!!!!!

    Isn’t this type of stuff the whole problem? Now, by that, I do not mean Krugman’s right to say what he wants, or the right feeling compelled to defend against the attacks that typically come from these type of events (which more often than not turn out to be an ideologue). The issue is that we naturally react to this being a left/right issue. What happened today is disgusting, the gunman should be given his day in court, and god willing, made to pay for the cowardice and heartless behavior displayed. The level of vitriol is out of control, it’s what will stir the pot, and will not do anything to advance any cause, except that of tyranny.

    My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone devastated by this horrible shooting.

      Not only was Limbaugh blamed for the Oklahoma City bombing, but so were the home schoolers – ever so briefly. I was enroute to my parents that day with our son and when I arrived, my mother asked us to leave because she had heard on the TV news that “we” (home schoolers) had been behind the bombing. That statement was later retracted by the news caster who made it, but for our family, the damaged was done.

      Van Jones, Piven and other liberal progressives have called for violence this past week or so. I can find no conservative call to violence.
      And yet, when a totally obvious nut case mentally ill person kills, it is conservatives fault.

      IMO, maybe the fault lies with just one nut case…..Jared Loughner.

      If progressives or conservatives had any brains between them, each would see the truth of this shooting. But unless we want more of the same as today in Arizona, perhaps both sides should tone it down.

      I know this is a sad day with the events on AZ. But “APATRIOTFIRST” is right in his observation. Van Jones, Piven and other Marxists associated with the administration have been calling for violence in the streets. They don’t care what it looks like so long as it occurs. Now we have a shooting of a Democrat Congresswoman. And the liberal progressives take the first opportunity to blame who else….the conservatives, the Tea Party followers, etc. etc. etc. THIS IS THERE M.O (modus operandi) folks. They know we want defend ourselves out respect to the victims. Regardless of the circumstances, we have to stand up and defend ourselves from these attacks. Left unattended the liberal progressives will inact more legislation like the “hate crimes” bill to be used NOT against the Van Jones’s, Piven’s and Marxists of this world….AGAINST YOU AND ME…WE THE PEOPLE. I do not for one minute dismiss the possibility that this act of violence could have been brought on via the prompting of the rants of Van Jones or Ms. Piven and other assorted Marxists.       Been switching back between FOX and MSNBC coverage. Didn‘t take long to start pointing fingers at Consevatives and even Sarah Palin’s website. They were making inuendos all afternoon about talk radio and finally it was good old Olbermann who had an “expert” on that said this nutballs videos were all “far right” ideas. Instead of waiting until all the facts are in and seeing what this obviously deranged person believed in they are already pointing the finger at the right. Typical.

After a constant diet of “they are out to get us”, it’s no small wonder that every time something happens, they run scared, screaming at the top of their lungs, “The Conservatives are coming, the Conservatives are coming!”

      Now, for an interesting mental exercise, go back and read the above paragraph and insert another people group, social group, or religious group for the word “conservative”. Interesting, no?

      My understanding is that the shooter had a problem with being given a Bible and there is speculation that it might have triggered him to see the Representative reading the 1st admendment.

      I think the word “vitriol” is getting bantered carelessly about by Krugman who I’m sure has no axe to grind with trying to squelch conservative talk (sarcasm). Yet he is strangely mum when Piven openly cries for violence.

      From the randomness of the madman’s actions its would seem more appropriate that he is not one of our teaparty members but more likely an anti Christian from the left. Glenn and Rush last time I checked were both Christians opposed to violence while Piven prays for it (violence) as inspiration for the socialists’ sick obsession with their top down, bottom up, inside out plot after the Watts riots in the 60s while Glenn was sincerely appalled by the west coast violence at the time and sense.

      Krugman you hope to stiffle conservative talk and you better be praying that you don’t get what you wish for. Because who will be there to stick up for you when they come for you next!?

      I remember that Glenn shouted at President Bush when he was at CNN, then they fired him when Obama was elected. He ended up on Fox and he still yells at Bush’s wild spending as he does with Obama. Beck is no GOP HACK or a DEM HACK He is a LIBERTARIAN of the Later Day Saints Movement of Joseph Smith. He does not or ever incited any one to violence, he has warned that violence could come and that as he spoke out about what he is reporting on will bring about violence.       Everything has become politicized because the politicians are so out-of-whack with the American People who hire them as representatives and really have been for quite some time. We’re just paying attention now because the system has broken down.

      George W. Bush was a progressive president. He expanded Medicare, didn’t reign in government spending, practiced Keynesian economics, and followed a policy of nation building.

      Progressivism is the cancer on America, as you all know. We’re all progressive on some level. It’s easy to spout off about canceling government programs, but could you really sign the veto that ended medical care for children or school lunch programs? I couldn’t.

      Progressivism has created all of our problems, but we should’ve stopped it before this point. FDR’s Social Security Ponzi Scheme is reaching the point where the people paying in can no longer pay the people taking out, so it will collapse. The entire country is a Ponzi Scheme of epic proportions now. This Ponzi Scheme can print currency and borrow to keep it going, but that will change within our lifetimes. Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Obamacare, the Fed, bailouts, Keynesian economics, ditching the gold standard, nation building in Vietnam and now Afghanistan and Iraq, etc… It’s all progressive policies. The (R) and (D) do not matter. Spending was the easiest way to stay in power.

      The progressives have created this polarized political climate with the failure of their policies, and now they claim to have the solutions. Both parties are progressive and most politicians have echoed support for progressive policies at some point. Neither party has ever really made significant budget cuts or budget reform in the modern era. The budget was in surplus after Clinton mainly because of the economic boom created by the Internet. Revenues increased quickly enough to create a shot-term surplus.

      The game is up. The Ponzi Scheme is collapsing. Everyone wants someone to blame, so we’ve got this liberals versus conservatives divide and conquer playing out, while those in power consolidate more power and wealth – they know what’s coming. We only have ourselves to blame for not paying attention. My friends, America has not failed – just look at voter turnout results over the years. We the People have failed America.

      Violence isn’t the answer. Obviously this young man had very serious mental illness problems and any of his political thoughts or views would not be based on logic and reason, but that doesn’t matter. That will be lost in the noise. It already has been. Neither side of the aisle supports this, but both sides are using it politically. We only have ourselves to blame.

      The left, liberals in general, they know full well what they’re doing right now with this tragedy. In total, and highly consistent with liberalism, it’s a gross contradiction blaming any one group and so soon. Blind, unknowing masses, liberals, they’re crawling up onto any podium that they can find to broadcast their voices, their incendiary charges, their ill advised and premature finger pointing. In effect, it is a continuance of the original crime as through your voices liberals, you are injecting yourselves as co-conspirators to the original deed carrying out the crime to a further conclusion.

      What you are doing liberals, right in front of everyone, is conducting yourselves in the exact same manner that you’re attempting to label the actions of conservatism with, the Tea Party with, that you say caused this action to take place. The irony though, it runs deep as you admit that conservatism is in constant dialogue over the atrocities that liberalism results in, namely the violence and civil unrest that occurs when people discover they’ve been lied to, have been deceived, scorned and minimized. Liberals, that is you. You have great amounts of guilt and blood on your hands right now. It’s so much so that you don’t know how to process the emotions of the opportunity except to come out and present your selves hastily and prematurely by way of accusations pointing to the innocent and perpetuating that which has been put in motion. Know that we understand your actions, liberals; what you are doing is highly predictable. But again, it is recognized as a continuance, a climax of the original crime.

      And if your involvement must be further explained: You know that we are peaceful people that seek truths; else you would have experienced much greater amounts of violence than what occurred in Tucson and long ago. We recognize your leaders for what they are and what they are doing. We see Van Jones for what he is doing . . . and so do you; the violence he is inciting. We call it out and you call us racists. We step back then and allow you to pass peacefully to continue on in your work against us. And yet, you experience no violence. But still, we are framed by your imagery and your false reporting as being aggressive and provocative.

      We see the resurgence of Cloward-Piven and know what it results in. We call it out and you call us racists. We forecast the storms that are brewing on the horizon . . . the ones that you, liberals are creating because you know that in the winds of crisis blows the debris of change. You first call for civil unrest, and when you get it you use it to blame your opposition to cause further unrest and civil agitation . . . Yet, your claims are that your mission is a peaceful one.

Your leaders are keen on the notion that it is only a matter of time that if you continue putting all the things in place that cause social pressures to build, the caldron of your disguised hate for us will begin to boil and to boil over. In our desire to do other more productive and sound things, we will be called to service for the sake of our families, our neighbors and our friends to have no other choice but to accept your hate as your final motivation and then we must defend ourselves against you in the courts, in the streets . . . wherever you attack us and whatever guise that you come with.

      You know these things and you know them all well; they are the subjects of your favorite authors and community organizers, past and present. Your feigned alarm by this attack holds no water when it is you, liberalism that drives the mind to live in a reality that is filled with untruths, contradictions, ironies and the narcissisms that uber-liberals are famous for.

      You will not forever be allowed to light the fires of civil unrest only to walk away innocently watching as our world goes up in flames . . . You are a sick people; you have proven that for many to see today.

      It didn’t take long for the left wing liberal kooks in the media to start blaming the tea party, Glee Beck , Rush, et all, for this atrocity. This nut was not affliated with any group, and based on his readings probably did not watch or listen to any of the people mentioned in the NYT article. It sounds almost like he was a disenchanted left wing nut case who was upset that the Congresswoman was a moderate “Blue Dog”. But we can’t say for sure because he is not talking. The only person to blame here is the shooter, and the NYT and CNN, CNBC, MSNBC, et al. news script readers need to stop thowing gas on the fire. These people are reckless and need to shut their pieholes.

      And your position that Sarah Palin should be prosecuted is based on what facts? Could you please identify a law that would apply to this scenario? Every election sees talk of “targeting” certain districts. Your whole argument is ridiculous. So a graphic artist creates an illustration of a Congressional District that has been targeted as competitive, and actually puts a target on it for visual effect and that is viewed as analogous to murder? Riiiiiight…

Based on what we know about the shooter, it is far more likely he would be visiting the same websites/bloggers and watching the same news outlets that “whiteteaparty visits. Unlike the shooter and “whiteteaparty”, the Tea Party folks love God and denounce violence as evidenced by thousands of Town hall meetings and Tea Party Rallies held across the country in 2009 and 2010 where the only violence committed was by SEIU and MoveOn.org supporters against Tea Party participants.

      I wish people would actually read Glenn Beck’s comments, , his pledge of non violence on his website for the 9-12er’s. His constant referrals about the 40 day challenge to yourself, to spend more time with the family and to pray every day on your knees. I wish people would watch and listen with their own ears and do a little of the research themselves instead of listening to the uber left condemn and malign everyone who has a bit of moral purpitude and the integrity to try and do the right thing. Ever since the 8/28 rally at the Lincoln Memorial where the lefties tried like hell to make it political, Glenn has talked about nothing except getting our own personal lives in order and working with our God to make that happen. If people would just take the time to do their own research they would see that Glenn is all about Americans restoring personal honor. If we can start with ourselves and our families, it will necessarily spread to our neighbors and our communities and our states and then our countries. All change starts within us.

      There are folks on the right and left who politicize everything. Heck, the GOP politicized 9/11 with terror alerts that escalated ahead of elections. You cannot just say, “he’s politicizing, so let’s ignore him.” That is a cop out. Rather, you have to explain why corporations spend hundreds of millions of dollars a year to use the media to shape messages and images around their products and services, but then dismiss the idea that pundits on Fox or MSNBC, who have 20-30 times as much media time to put out their ideological or political messages, do not have any impact on people’s minds. Either the corporations are irrational for spending all that money on advertising, or you are irrational to believe that the messages seen in the media do not impact people. Further, those who are less stable are more likely, rather than less likely, to turn those messages into action. And here is the sad part. You can communicate all of your messages and values without reverting to dehumanizing, violent rhetoric, so you are defending a method of rhetoric that is as unnecessary as it is shameful for a host of reasons, not least of which is the apparent connection–as evidenced by the multi-billion-dollar ad market–that such rhetoric does have consequences.

      And for those that want to point to leftist violence, you are right to do so. And I would expect left-leaning pundits to follow Olbermann’s lead and apologize for his rhetoric. We all make mistakes, but those that do not offer apologies now or when they are confronted with it, should be dismissed and marginalized. Anti-violence and anti-vitriolic rhetoric is not a left-right issue.
