Reports: Sources Confirm Weiner Will Resign

It seems the saga of Anthony Weiner is about to come to an end.

New York Rep. Anthony Weiner has decided to resign his seat in Congress after a two-week scandal spawned by lewd and even X-rated photos the New York lawmaker took of himself and sent online to numerous women, relieved Democratic officials said Thursday.

A formal announcement was expected later in the day.

Weiner, 46, has been at a treatment facility at an undisclosed location since last weekend, and has not been seen in public since telling reporters last Saturday he intended to return to work.

One official said Weiner telephoned House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Steve Israel of New York, the head of the party campaign committee, on Wednesday evening to tell them of his plans to quit. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the private nature of the conversations.

The New York Times first reported the resignation rumors this morning, saying that Weiner had told his friends of his plans to resign his House seat. The decision reportedly came after long conversations with his wife:

Representative Anthony D. Weiner has told friends that he plans to resign his seat after coming under growing pressure from his Democratic colleagues to leave the House in the wake of revelations of his lewd online exchanges with women, said a person told of Mr. Weiner’s plans.

The news comes as Democratic leaders prepared to hold a meeting on Thursday to discuss whether to strip the 46-year-old Congressman of his committee assignments, a blow which would severely damage his effectiveness.

Mr. Weiner, a Democrat, came to the conclusion that he could no longer serve after having long discussions with his wife,  Huma Abedin, when she returned home on Tuesday after traveling abroad with her boss, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Politico confirmed Wiener’s resignation with its sources, but also gave more details about when the decision was made:

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) will resign from his seat in Congress, heeding calls from President Barack Obama, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and dozens of other congressional Democrats, sources confirm to POLITICO. The resignation ends nearly three weeks of tumultuous political controversy since the New York congressman sent a lewd picture of himself over Twitter which he claimed at first was a result of a hack, and later admitted he had sent himself.

According to two sources, Weiner made up his mind to resign Wednesday night, and shortly after began making calls to inform them of his decision. Weiner called DCCC chair Steve Israel — who had also called for his resignation — on Wednesday night at the White House picnic to inform him and Pelosi that he had decided to resign on Thursday.

Weiner became embroiled in an online sexting scandal after sending lewd photos and messages sent to at least six women. During a tearful news conference recently he admitted he had told a series of lies to cover up his bad behavior.

Top Democrats, such as Nancy Pelosi, had called for a House ethics probe to see if Weiner had broken any rules, including whether he may have abused his congressional office.

Fox News says Weiner will host a press conference this afternoon at 2 pm ET. The Blaze will bring that to you live.

This is a breaking story. Updates will be added. The Associated Press contributed to this report.

One question. Why is Congress so adamant about Weiner? Clinton did far more wrong with Monica than Wiener did. Clinton actually Monica perform oral sex in the WHITE HOUSE. By doing so, he disgraced the office of the presidency and the 1600 Pennasylvania Ave. address where he lived.

“I did not have sex with THAT woman.” Well if oral sex ins’t sex, what is it?

So after diverting our country’s business at hand for two weeks this weiner wacker is going to walk away with a $37,000 a year retirement check and other benefits we have yet to hear about?

Gee! I hope he and his wife can make it on her $160K with Hilary and his $37K. This guy has been a pol every day since he got out of college. He has no business experience and Weiner’s useful skills are lying and cheating. He needs to visit his union slob buddies about a referral to a really good job with them sitting on their collective butts.

I hope the tearful press conference is one to forget.

      CODE OF OFFICIAL CONDUCT
There is hereby established by and for the House of Representatives the following code of conduct, to be known as the “Code of Official Conduct”:

      1. A Member, officer, or employee of the House of Representatives shall conduct himself at all times in a manner which shall reflect creditably on the House of Representatives.

“reflect creditably” Where is the ethics in our elected officials? If I had done what this guy did I would be fired! Where has all our morals gone? God help us!
