NYC Doctor Accused of Falsely Telling Patients They Had HIVIt’s a hard-to-believe accusation, but one that prosecutors believe to be true. A New York City doctor allegedly told about a dozen patients that they were infected with the HIV virus. Then, he purportedly treated them and billed Medicaid $700,000. As a result, he may face 15 years behind bars. FOX News has more:

Suresh Hemrajani, 57, was arraigned Friday in Manhattan Supreme Court on felony charges of grand larceny, fraud and falsifying business records. He was being held in lieu of $250,000 bail…

The doctor also created false records of his purported repeated treatments of the patients, even though most of them never visited his office more than once.

The scam was only revealed after the patients later attempted to obtain prescriptions from a hospital, were tested, and found to be HIV-negative, Vance said.

The New York Daily News claims that some of the patients may have been in on the scam, though this isn’t yet confirmed:

A law enforcement source said that the internist’s unnamed patients may have participated in the fraud.

“By taking advantage of a program intended to assist New Yorkers who cannot afford to pay for medical care, the defendant victimized not only the neediest members of our community but also all New York taxpayers,” District Attorney Vance said.

The case was a joint investigation with the New York City Human Resources Administration.

    I would have his license removed and strip him of his practice. It is completely dishonorable to purposefully misdiagnose people for the reason of extortion.

    By the way, people who arent white, are just as brilliant as to those who are. Get outta my kitchen racists.

    Big Pharma, is the culprit, when you have drug pushers writing the textbooks that our doctors learn from we have a problem. When greed takes precedence over human life or the quality of it there’s a problem. We have a corrupt system from our basic needs such as Food, shelter, taxation, the very goods and services we need, our education and the list goes on.. The majority of the problems come from the fascist Progressive movement. Their goal is to reduce the population to 300 to 500 million worldwide! The scam is they will make a fortune watching us die. I say we are going after the wrong terrorists. The real terrorists deliberately diagnose people with AIDS. I believe my mother does not have Cancer I think she has a bacterial infection that they can’t get rid of at $27,000 per treatment every three weeks. Who is getting ripped off? The people paying the insurance bill. Who is that? The taxpayer. IF she has cancer there are cures that are not coming to market because “they” control the entire thing. The FDA has shut operations down that WORK with guns, but keep pill mills pumping out oxycodone by the millions drugging our kids every day.. There isn’t an easy button for this one.. The reset button is what is needed and it will be painful but worth it..

    the southern half af africa has the best medical system in the world.no one has died from any outher cause than AIDS. If they ever find a cure for AIDS then there will never be anouther death in southern africa.

    For any major life changing diagnosis ALWAYS get a independent 2nd opinion. ALWAYS,

    Cancer, AIDS, even Heart Disease, ALWAYS get a 2nd doctor to look you over, Even if your 100% sure your doctor is good and not trying to scam you, many many many things in medicine come down to “educated guess” work.

    Just 15 years? I wonder how many of his patients lives he totally ruined by the false diagnosis? I hope they all sue him in civil court and turn him into an indentured servant for the remainder of his life.

    OK, this is ONE doctor who worked the system for about 3/4 mil. Plus the cost for high cost meds, which may have come from medicare also. WHO checks on these doctors who are billing falsely? Obviously no one.

    His sentence was not enough. He needs to return the money he stole, and how will he remove the terror from those patients who were not in on the scam, but believed that they did have HIV. He needs more than 15 years.

      In the case of the A.D.D. and Bi-polar I figure quite a few are; some like me do suffer from Bi Polar to the extreme, even with the help of the medications, and yet I see many people being assigned pills and such for no apperant reason…like you have said, maybe just for having a bad attitude on one day of their lives…or a bad moment.

      Another quality import from India…oh, and he is a Kidney specialist. So…these patients (who one can only assume went to him knowing this and indeed for kidney problems) were either in on it or major idiots to not then get a referral to a proper specialist.

      I mean, if I had a recurring sore throat and went to a “ears, nose & throat” specialist and was told by him that I had cancer and should come back each week for my chemo treatments…I’d be a little suspicious.

      Then again, if they really were destitute and unable to afford proper medical care…they may just have been scared enough to just take what they could get in the form of a treatment they could afford.

      sounds fishy.

      Never saw him more than once and he billed that much?

      He would have to claim he was doing lots of blood tests and/or filling prescriptions to rack up that big a bill.

      Me thinks they were in on it, and got caught, and are throwing him under the bus.

      The truly sad things about this are:
      1. The emotional toll on those persons given a false diagnosis
      2. The doctor and his staff’s knowledge and purposely ripping off the medicare/ medicade system for their own enrichment and greed
      3. That this is probably one of thousands of doctors and others who CONTINUE to bilk medicare/ medicade for their own selfish and greedy gains.
      4. All of the taxpayers who believe they will be getting medicare, only to find out because of greedy criminals like this the system is broke.
      Sorry, this guy, and those like him, deserve more than 15 years in prison. The skimming of all government programs is more common than not. It’s being done by politicians, doctors, citizens, and even the government employees themselves.
