NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s Actual Defense of Large Drink Ban: ‘We’re Simply Forcing You to Understand’

I’m going to get out of the way here and just let NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg explain to you the logic behind his proposed ban on sugary drinks over 16 ounces. Because really, once he starts admitting it‘s his government’s role to “force” people to do things, he kind of buries himself.

“The idea here is, you tend to eat all the food in the container in front of you,” Bloomberg said on MSNBC Thursday afternoon. “If it’s a bigger container, you eat more. If somebody put it in a smaller glass or plate or bowl in front of you, you would eat less.”

And then there’s this: “We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup.”

“It’s not perfect, it’s not the only answer, it’s not the only cause of people being overweight – but we’ve got to do something,” he added. “We have an obligation to warn you when things are not good for your health.”

And: “I would just like to … force the consumer to hopefully move over to the less fattening drinks and everybody will be better off.”

Catch that? He’s not taking away your rights, but he’s forcing you into something he wants.

Bottom line; NY gets what they deserve. They voted this Progressive turd into office. So how’s that working out for you NY? Two million people have left NY in the last three years (TX and FL thank you).

But the question is…..will they accept how TX and FL is run or will they try and turn it into another liberal heaven……it’s one thing if they move and change their views, but to simply move but set up the same stuff that they are running from is pointless.

But then again that may be the plan, get liberals to move to conservative areas and slowly take them over……think about it.

New yorkers don’t care how many people leave, their reasoning is that it’s too crowded anyway. My sister lives there and she is disgusted with the people of new york. She told me that if I come there, leave my handgun AND my stun gun at home, either one can send me to jail. A stun gun??? You’re not allowed to carry a stun gun in new york?? You know there is a free market solution to the obesity crisis…If people have to pay for their own healthcare, they take better care of themselves. Also, allow health insurance companies to charge fat people higher premiums (like they do smokers for life insurance). People would either pick up the tab for their lifestyle or lose some weight and the rest of us could enjoy a large soda now and then.

TEAMARCHESON- I had to reply to you because in all honestly, what you are saying is totally wrong. Sugar absolutely makes you fat, extremely so. The no fat craze of the 90′s is actually when our country began to get extremely obese. To remove fat from food products the food companies added sugar, which is the ultimate culprit in obesity. While I was in medical school it was just being fully discovered that high cholesterol/triglycerides where raised just as much if not more from high sugar intake, than from fat intake. As a physician, if I had a patient who was obese, with high cholesterol, I would much rather them eat a large steak with mashed potatoes, than a few cans of coke and some twizzlers (both “no fat” foods). Do not be afraid of fat, be afraid of sugar. I have seen people lose 20 pounds with only cutting out soda, and making no other changes. I do not think the govt should regulate anything someone eats or drinks, I am against this law in principle. But, as a health care worker, I would love to see people especially kids stop drinking soda, it has no nutrients, it dehydrates, it causes major spikes in blood sugar which is leading risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Soda was meant to be a treat, not an everyday/all day type of thing.

What if we forced governments all over the country to “take the less fattening” approach. “Force them to ”take the smaller cup”. Well its like one of the justices asked. If the government can order you to buy its healthcare, then what else can it not make you do…not to much!

If government can reduce portion sizes based on the big gulp which most people may agree with and would not buy for themselves, then whats the next step because there is always a next step? Small pizzas and no large ones. Only 12inch subs and no 18in subs, sandwiches can only be sold as half sandwich portions, chips only sold in the tiny one serving bag and no large bags of chip will be sold for your own good, gallon of icecream goes down to the pint or even half pint. Want milk in a gallon container, sorry only available in the small kids lunch sizes and on it goes. once they start this it will be mandated into everything and thus the higher demand for more containers….check out who gets rich off of food packaging!

      @ Time,
Sure about that? Id say its just the opposite he loves you Santorum, Romney, Neo Con supporters because he knows Progressives like that will not excite the base ie Tea Party. Ron Paul is our only chance for that.

Ha ha yeah I can tell by all the support he receives at his rallies, he gets more than a hundred 50% of the time. What a joke. Because the tea party was for the bank bail outs, NDAA and gun control right? Yeah Romney is right in line with the tea party.
FYI Romney has done his best to distance himself from the tea party.

@TIME You know TIME..Obama or Romney..doesn’t matter..they are the same..just different bodies. Both owned by the Federal Reserve you love so much..you know..the boss of the banking cartels? Hey Time..I just found out that Romney’s biggest banker contributer is Goldman Sachs.. was the biggest recipient of that 700 billion TARP to Sharia Compliant Banks..you know Time..where those banks pay 2.5% to organizations funding terrorism and they have to pay 7% in fines for breaking one Sharia Law? Odd how those muslims are used..isn’t it Time?

I used to despise Christians who wanted to stick their noses into our bedrooms. Now we have BIG GOVERNMENT policemen and women interfering with our dietary habits (along with a thousand other regulations and restrictions). In CONTRAST to the Democratic Socialist religion, I’ve come to see Christianity in a kinder light.

This guy sounds like the atheists that permeate this board, and sue every school district or small town over any overt/implied religious displays…. “We know better than you do….We’re trying to teach you a valuable lesson.” Gee, sounds like Adolf before Der Reichstag…..

Oh well, NYC, you were dumb enough to elect this fool multiple times…..reap what you sew.

Something about that word “forcing” that really ****** me off. This has to be challenged legally. Hopefully the soft drink … or sugary drink … industry will coalesce. I am not personally affected by this, but if I happen to be in NYC on a very hot day and I feel like a Big Gulp it should be MY decision to drink it, not Bloomberg’s!

Communism needs children and so does Liberalism. Only children will obey the tyranny of adult delusions without question. Only the young are naïve enough to hate all authority and to destroy all achievement. For youth, Communism is not a delusion but an exciting, heroic cause. These children then turn into adults like Bloomberg and the Communist/Liberal beat goes on and on until we Conservatives put a stop to it.

I don’t know what all the fuss is all about. The idiots in NYC voted this POS in office, just like the people of our great country voted Obama into office. Why all the talk about what he’s doing. We have elections and the people can vote him out next time around. But I’m telling you , half of the people in our country want the government to take care of them. Maybe it’s even more than half. So basically WE the other half are screwed. I talk to a lot of people and they really don‘t give a rat’s rear end about what’s going on as far as laws are concerned. Their clueless………..gosh this makes me ill………….

If people wanted the smaller drinks, that‘s what they’d buy. The last couple of times that I went to the store, the larger drinks even cost more.

Bloomberg is forcing the people that want more to drink to buy two drinks, not just one.

The problem is its not confined to NYC. Look who the establishment is want to put up against Obama.

Romney’s supports bills like the patriot act and NDAA. Honestly who cares about the size of your coke when you are watched by the government without warrant and eventually indefinitely detained because you are against the actions of your government.
