NYC Mayor Wants Stricter Federal Gun Control After Rash of Shootings

Labor day weekend in New York City saw a surge in gun-related violence over the weekend that resulted in 10 deaths, and now Mayor  Bloomberg has asked for the federal government to pile on to some of the strictest local anti-gun legislation in the country.NYC Mayor Wants Stricter Federal Gun Control After Rash of Shootings

There were 14 separate shooting incidents over the weekend, and violence injured a reported 50 people, according to the Wall Street Journal. A lone gunman was reportedly responsible for shooting eight people at a party in a backyard in the Bronx on Sunday. Among his eight victims, the shooter hit an 11-year-old boy and two girls ages 13 and 14.

Gunfire even erupted within earshot of New York City Mayor Bloomberg on Sunday, as he was marching in the West Indian Day parade in Brooklyn, according to the NY Post.  A number of shootings occurred at or near the parade, which is supposed to be a celebration of West Indian (Caribbean) culture, food, and music.

Bloomberg responded to the spate of gun violence on the steps outside the Christian Cultural Center in Brooklyn, and claimed that:

“we cannot tolerate it, there are just too many guns on the streets and we have to do something about it.”

The Big Apple‘s Mayor didn’t leave any doubt as to what he had in mind when he said ‘do something.’ Bloomberg went called for direct federal government intervention to prevent gun possession in New York. On the issue of tackling the gun crime surge, the Mayor said:

“We need the federal government to step up. Both ends of Pennsylvania Ave., both sides of the aisle.”

NYC Mayor Wants Stricter Federal Gun Control After Rash of ShootingsNew York already has among the strictest gun control laws in the country. Currently, possession of an unlicensed handgun requires mandatory jail time (even for an NFL celebrity like Plaxico Burress).

As it is, law-abiding citizens have a near-impossble time acquiring a handgun permit in the city that never sleeps. Technically a “may issue” state for firearms, some legal analysts believe New York is really  more of a “no issue” state- unless you have connections.

This end-run around the 2nd Amendment in New York City began over a century ago as a result of corrupt, liberal politicians pandering to anti-immigrant sentiment.

The hundred-year-old Sullivan Law (also called the Sullivan Act) was initially a Tammany Hall patronage measure that allowed favored constituents of corrupt politicians to carry concealed handguns. Under the Sullivan Law, the police- not the Constitution- would determine who could and could not concealed carry a firearm in New York. Simple possession of more common weapons- razors, brass knuckles, or dagger, for example- was a felony, whereas possession of a firearm without license was a misdemeanor.

A series of similar gun legislation followed suit in urban areas across the country.

Fast forward a century: the current state of New York City’s handgun laws are so Byzantine, it appears almost impossible for law-abiding gun owners to comply with, or even understand them.

Perhaps that’s the point.

Meanwhile, in the aftermath of a tragic weekend, the same tired ant-gun politics emerge. Anyone want to place a bet on how many of the violent perpetrators were carrying guns illegally in the first place?

These criminals risked substantial jail time the moment they walked out their front door. Adding a federal penalty would hardly change their minds.

Further infringement on legal gun ownership  is not the answer.

But it seems City Hall has already decided to pretend it is.

      Therefore, the Feds should step in and remove all driver’s licenses from the Kennedy family. Bloomberg’s logic is irrefutable and unassailable on this point.

      Gee, the day that mayor Bloomberg walks around that city without an armed team of undercover cops to protect him and his family is the day that i would be willing to give up my guns in that town but since he has more money then god he thinks he is more important then any other citizen of New York city.

      As always this is the double standard that the liberals put forward, only the elite are smart enough and important enough to have guns, us “little people” just have to take what the elite gods allow us to have. I for one can‘t wait for this ass’s term of mayor to end.

      This guy is so bold that he will probably be just like that other elite ass from Chicago, mayor Daley that his city has hand gun laws just as bad as New York, Daley demanded the city of Chicago provide him with a 3 man under cover team of cops to protect him and his family 24 hours a day at tax payers expense and i don’t look for Bloomberg to be any different when he leaves office.

      I am very lucky that i live in a state that still understands the Constitution and does NOT try to keep its citizens from carrying hand guns, as a matter of fact you don‘t even need a permit to carry a concealed hand gun here and we also have a VERY STRONG castle doctrine law that allows us to not only protect our family’s but also our homes and thats the way it’s supposed to be in this country, not like in Nazi Chicago and New York.

      I was wondering the same thing. When he can claim to have a way to keep the guns out of the hands of criminals instead of trying to keep honest people from owning one, then I might listen. Right now it sounds like he only wants criminals to have guns. Because if they put that many restirictions on me, I’ll get one illegally.

      Maybe law enforcement could keep the people in jail that are doing the shooting, that could work. Laws won’t stop a crook from getting a gun, take the revolving door of the courthouse and that could be a start. So it would appear to me that the problem he is talking about is he himself and his leadership shortcomings. I suppose a competent mayor could help as well.

      What percentage of these crimes were committed by those on welfare or other lib programs?

      What percentage were listeners of rap music?

      How many of these criminals used stolen guns?

      How many of these shootings involved know criminals that already have a rap sheet as long as my leg?

      How many of these shooters were NRA members?

      How manh of these shooters are minorities?

      How many of these shooters sell drugs, or dable in other criminal activities?

      How many of these shooters would love to have a disarmed public, so they could do as they please then next time they go on a rampage?

      How many of these shooters are products of the modern day public school, where creation and the ten commandments are shunned, but evolution and “if it feels good, do it” is the rule of the day?

      How many of these shooters grew up on MTV and violent video games?

      How many of these shooters where home schooled, attended sunday school, and prayed and read the Bible in the home with both a mother and father?

      How many of these shooters voted for Obama? and will continue to vote for Obama?

      How many of these shooters have even a basic knowledge of our constitution?

      How many of these shooters are muslim?

      How many of these shooters were spanked when they were growing up?

      Laws only affect the law abiding criminals will always find away to get guns.

      There should be no gun control laws pertaining to any free citizen. There absolutely should be no state gun laws of any kind. It is a federal issue only. “Shall not infringe” is pretty d**n clear. It’s quite simple, you are either in prison or you are free to buy any gun or ammo that any U.S. military person or piggish, brownshirt “cop” has. The point of the 2nd amendment was not for hunting and it was not a privilege. It was the right of every free man to keep the government fearful of crossing us. A right cannot be taken away or infringed in ANY way unless you are imprisoned and ONLY for the time you are imprisoned.

      I have never been in prison, I simply believe in punishment that fits the crime. If a person can repay their debt, then the debt IS PAID and they have a right… A RIGHT… to defend themselves and put fear into the government. The government is supposed to fear us, NOT the other way around.

      Perhaps Bloomberg should take a look at the resultas of his current anti-gun efforts. Seems to me all the wrong people are armed without much fear of encountering an armed victim.

      Proposed solution: Apply therecent Supreme Court decisions (Heller and McDonald decisions) and restore the rights of the law-abiding citizens of NYC.

      Wow just when I get a minuscule amount of hope for this country I get shidt on. I can careless about nyc however I do care about our constitution. Every time I read a story such as this, I go in debt if you get my drift. These dumb arses are contributing to the legal and smart citizens to stockpile everything. The unfortunate part is where to hide them all and ensure they can be had when needed before Buthole obama concocts some fake crisis to enact marshal law. When they start coming for our LEGAL firearms just make sure you cache some they can’t find. I know of many people who since Obutthole took office have never has as much ammo/firearms etc all caused by the almost certain confiscation they are planning. Don’t be a sheep, e mail every congress man/woman /fwank etc with your voice. Be heard before its to late. Complain all you want but if you don’t get involved what right do you have? The NRA is a great resource for contacting your state reps. Sign up for their legislative updates and you will be able to click on a link and tell them out of step idiots your not going to take it.

      I agree, State Guy! It was a different — better — NYC when Guiliani was mayor. NYC is the last city (well, behind D.C.) I would want to visit because of leaders like him. And the 9-11 activities they plan are a farce and an insult to those who lost their lives in 2001. I’d rather watch a local observation where — gasp! — prayer and the American flag are proudly supported.

    Mr Mayor, as the article states very clearly that the citizens of your city are made to do the near impossible to obtain a firearm of any kind. And for some reason in the depths of the socialist madness you work from, you think the laws are not strict enough already?

    Why would crooks and criminals, who already are violating the laws, stop just because the feds work to create harsher and harsher penalties to lawful citizens and eventually seize the arms anyways if Mr Obama has his way.

    Let the citizens have the firearms, and be able to defend themselves as we do in AZ, the streets may be messy for a time, yet the number of crooks would be thinned out considerably and the streets become much safer.

    Of course, for the socialists who want the harsh laws on the lawful citizens, if you take the guns away then there is nothing left to stop the government from becoming a true and unmerciful tryanny.

      Here in smalltown Oklahoma the turkey that shot 8 people ar a party would have 5 to 10 people shoot back at him. My sons and daughter in laws all have carry permits and usually are packing, I at a minium have a judge in my pocket loaded with 45 and 410 shot gun shells

    Heres an idea, start enforcing the laws on the books. Better yet add some teeth to those existing laws and make the consequences/ punishment of using a gun in a crime extremely severe.

    Bloomberg and the socialist proggies of NY of course will not think logically they will instead look at ways to disarm law abiding gun owners and make it now impossible to own a gun while they pressure DC to copy what they have already done to the entire nation. Im surprised he didnt flat out say guns are being trafficked from the border up to NYC in some pathetic attempt to tie Fast & Furious to this and try to legitimize it!! :)

      You can never make it impossible to possess a gun, there are just to many of them out there; which is the way it should be. If you want to prevent crime, have more guns and those trained to use them. Would those 8 people have been killed if several of the party attendees had had guns. Or better yet, if the perpetrator had known there were other guns present beside his own.

      Makes sense to me that he may have actually chosen not to go to disrupt the party. Don’t you?

      That sad excuse of a Mayor he need to have more GUNS NOT LESS. he would have those shot and killed today that did the shooting if he allowed guns. Just think how much it would have saved that town. We could save the cost of trial upkeep in jail. Just the cost of a bullet and a pine box for each
      person and problem solved. He does no understand the criminals won’t try as many things if they think it is consequences. After we shoot a couple and put them in pine boxes in the middle of time square. They would know next time. He catches and they get a real talking to and put back on the street.No wonder they keep going back. If the Mayor does not shut up about the Building the Mosque, and keeping first reaponders out of celebration for 9/11 and not having any ministers there to pray.
      It may not be his problem much longer anyway. Because someone is going to quiten him for us.

      Not quite a wash. Remember, they are appointed for life. It would be a crying shame to have an old liberal replaced with another BIG-TIME young liberal. When a conservative president gets elected and Ginsburg (or any other lib justice passes away) they might get replaced with a conservative justice in favor of 2nd Amendment rights.

    Bloomberg has every law on the book possible and more to curb all gun violence. Yet, with his corrupt city government, corrupt police forces, corrupt judges, he thinks he can make law abiding citizens outside of his Fascist city bow to his, Obamas, Soros’s, Hillary’s Nato corrupted, South Korean corrupt politician based Agenda 21 and the New World Order to tear apart the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution,well, they’re WRONG.

    We need to kick all these people out of office immediately and give the U.N. it’s walking papers before we level that evil building down into smoldering ashes.

    As Americans our Constitution states we have the right to bear arms. When our goverment in directly responsible for creating conditions where folks use violence at the drop of the hat, stricter gun laws will not solve that problem! That is not the answer. A personal respect for life and property simply can not be put in place by the goverment.

I knew when I read this headline on Drudge that the call for gun control would be louder than loud and a “new call” to ban guns. there will be something that the Feds will use to justify their actions to take your guns.
