NYC Public School Mandates Arabic Language Studies for All 2nd Through 5th Graders

PS 368, a public elementary school in Manhattan, New York, has implemented a school-wide mandate that is capturing headlines. Principal Nicky Kram Rosen is requiring all 200 students in grades second through fifth to spend two 45-minute sessions each week learning Arabic.
The requirement, which will begin next semester, is intended to help bolster the school’s standing. Rather than focusing on more common (some would argue even more useful) languages like French or Spanish, Rosen has chosen Arabic in an effort to achieve an International Baccalaureate, which would apparently be a wonderful sentiment for the school’s reputation.
“She proposed this to the parent association. They were very supportive,” explained Angela Jackson, the CEO of the Global Language Project, a group backing the initiative. “Arabic has been identified as a critical-need language. It means they can spin the globe and decide where they want to work and live.”

The program was created as a partnership between the Global Language Project and the Qatar Foundation International. Currently, children are participating in a pilot version of the class during their free afternoon periods. As far as potential objections to the program go, the school will need to focus on those incidents, should they become a problem, on an individualized basis.

The Arabic requirement becomes mandatory in September. But PS 368 is a so-called “choice’’ school and no kids, even those living nearby, are forced to attend it. If the school ever enrolls a student who objects to learning Arabic, administrators will deal with that on a case-by-case basis, Jackson said.
Mohamed Mamdouh, who teaches the pilot program, said, “Soon, Arabic will be a global language like French and Spanish. These kids are like sponges. It’s amazing to see their progress.’’
Mamdouh yesterday played a version of duck, duck, goose with the kids using the Arabic words for mother and father — mama and baba — for ducks and geese.
NY1 is reporting that teachers at the school also hope that, in addition to language skills, students gain a better understanding of the Middle East and Arab culture. So far, no opposition to the program has been reported.

In arrizona we were all taught spanish in grade school, (1960‘s and early 1970’s) It was mandatory for us then and became an elective in high school. I have found it to be extremely helpful in later years. I think the problem in ny would be if the source of study is the koran.

There are more Arabic speakers that want to kill Americans than French, Spanish speakers. This will give our children the ability to understand what they are saying. Language is a tool, it can be used for good or evil. If done right, this would be a great tool for good.

A lot of people do speak and read Arabic but it is still not a dominant language in the world (politics, business, etc.). This is not and should not be a priority in any US school. I had to look up International Baccalaureate I have never heard of it before. Sounds like a good idea but so did the U.N. so I am highly skeptical of it’s eventual implications. I have to agree with the why Arabic as the language choice? The countries that are supporters are not Arabic. They are Alberta Education, Canada, Germany, Norway, and Japan.

Is French really more common? Outside of France, parts of Canada, and some areas of Northern Africa, does it have a significant presence as either the second or third most common language among the people?
I think Arabic should be offered as an elective course, much like Spanish, French, and Latin are in many schools (most require a students to choose one). Knowing Arabic is definitely a benefit, but I would argue Mandarin is going to be the most useful in the coming decades if you’re doing business abroad. But I‘m not sure if it’s worthwhile to make it mandatory for kids without offering other choices.

Maybe Spanish, maybe Mandarin, maybe Arabic, maybe Hindi, or even German again, like before WWI. Modern foreign-language programs can get you up to speed in a matter of months. But I would agree that everyone should be exposed to a foreign language in school as early as possible, provided of course that primary instruction is in English.

Of Education tried this in Texas (2011) and had to abandon it after Parents complained and refused to comply with the MANDANTORY curriculum that would have taught their children that Arabic was “the language of the future” and a falsified whitewashed version of Islam and Arab culture.

This is the second nutty idea in two days. How about English first instead of trying for some international language recognition. But then, it is not a regular public school and no one is forced to go there. So if a student does go there they do it at their own risk.

It would be good to be able read their mother language to find out what these dirt bags are actually thinking.
I find this quite revealing: Mohamed Mamdouh, who teaches the pilot program, said, “Soon, Arabic will be a global language like French and Spanish. These kids are like sponges. It’s amazing to see their progress.”
It will indeed become a global language if the PC idiots in this world continue to keep their heads up their rectoleums and allow Sharia and other Muslim crap to creep into the western justice systems and society.
