NYC Reporter Stays Night at Occupy Wall St: ‘Scary Place’ Where Rape Threat is ‘Very Real’

A female reporter braved the frigid and smelly air to spend the night at Occupy Wall Street over the weekend, but her main fear stemmed from the swirling rumors and accusations of sexual assault at Zuccotti Park.
“It’s a scary place,” Candice Giove of the New York Post told “Good Day New York.” She also wrote in a column yesterday on her overnight that ”the threat of rape is very real for men and women.”
She spent the night in a women only tent, which has been set up in response to numerous allegations of sexual assault and rape down at Zuccotti Park. Police have confirmed at least two instances of sexual assault there, and at least one arrest has been made as a result.
Giove claimed her discussions with Occupiers indicated there have been “many, many stories of sexual abuse in the park.”
One woman Giove spoke with during her overnight stay claimed that she had been sexually assaulted in early October, but stayed in the park since the incident to help counsel other women who have also been sexually abused.
As for the overall atmosphere, Giove belied the narrative pushed by much of the mainstream media that Occupy is just a forum for political dialogue that is gaining the support of the American people.
To give a more realistic sense of Occupy and its disparate, often nihilistic factions, Giove told the Morning show that Occupy Wall Street in Zuccotti Park is:
“its own country, divided into camps with different kinds of people, some people believe in the cause, others just want to be part of the party.. its totally lawless, [with] open drug use in the park.”
As for outrage from other Occupiers at the cases of sexual assault in their midst, it appears to have left them unfazed. Many of them are just there because it is a “Fun, hip thing to do,” Giove said.
Watch Giove describe her night at the park with WNYW-TV below:
Besides the “threat” of rape, apparently, the Occupiers have also had to be reminded about the need to be good neighbors, respect each other, and even stay sober:

You had just put your cell in danger of being stolen, so is it was o.k. for me to take it? Think man…Come’on

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 2:40pmYes, Spankdamonkey, it is still rape. Just the same as a woman who takes a late night job to feed her family, or who goes into a war zone with the military. I can see where you got your nickname. Grow up and maybe you can get a date with a real woman.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 5:38pmIt is foolish, but it is still rape. If you leave your house unlocked and return to find everything in your house stolen. Was it theft or did you give your stuff away? I say it was theft but you were also foolish in not taking teh BASIC precaution of locking your doors.
I know someone who thought it was OK going into unsafe situations because it would be rape and that she wasn’t “asking for it” if it happened. I totally agree with her that she isn’t asking for it and it would be rape, but that doesn‘t mean it wasn’t STUPID on her part for not exercising BASIC precautions. Guess what? She was eventually raped. So the guy should be imprisoned but that doesn’t help ease the sting of her rape. Too many people use the excuse of “I am not asking for it” for not taking BASIC PRECAUTIONS! THAT WON’T HELP ERASE THE TRAUMA IF IT HAPPENS!

Posted on November 8, 2011 at 5:08pmIdiotic question. Putting yourself in a dangerous situation doesn’t excuse somebody for committing a crime. It’s certainly a stupid thing to do, but the victim being an idiot doesn’t mean the perpetrator gets a pass.
By your logic you wouldn’t be able to prosecute anyone for any crime ever, because most crimes are crimes of opportunity perpetrated against people who aren’t being particularly smart.

Posted on November 7, 2011 at 2:22pmI think the reason mayors and governors are not doing anything about OWS is that they are AFRAID they will start violent looting and damage. Its the same reason no one does anything about muslims. They are afraid of what the muslims will do. Write a cartoon about muslims and watch the death threats come pouring in. Posted on November 7, 2011 at 3:11pmI don’t really have any money (our family lives around the poverty level), but I consider myself to be part of the 1%. I’m not asking for more handouts. Although we currently get medical help from the government, I’d vote against it if it came down to it… a healthier economy is better for all of us. I make money through online advertising, through sales of items that I have created, or when people buy products from the links that I create on the internet – if other people have more money, then so do I.
I don’t support lawlessness, but I do support hard work. I don’t plan on staying at this income level forever – in fact, if we weren’t in a recession, I would probably be doing better than I am at this time.

They expect the rest of us to get in line with their outlook for the country or the world at large when they have all the same problems within their little commune. What a joke. The hippies in the 70s learned all these tough lessons and they had their own property to do what they wished on…it did not work out or they would no doubt be a powerful people by now if it had.
