NYC to Dispatch New ‘Organ Preservation Units’ With 911 Responders

Health care reformers may deny the existence of so-called “death panels,” but New York City’s creepy new “organ preservation” service is hard to ignore.
The New York Times reports (emphases mine):
Some 911 calls in Manhattan will now bring out two ambulances, one hurrying to the scene and one lagging slightly behind.
The first one will try to save the patient’s life. The second one will try to save the patient’s kidneys, in case the first ambulance fails.
After months of grappling with the ethical and legal implications, New York City medical officials are beginning to test a system that they hope will one day greatly increase the number of organs collected for transplant.
For five months starting Wednesday, the city will deploy a specially trained team that will monitor 911 calls for people who may be in danger of dying, like those having a heart attack. If efforts to resuscitate the patient fail, the team will quickly move in and try to save the kidneys; normally, patients who die outside hospitals cannot be donors because if too much time passes after the heart stops beating, the organs are unusable.
City officials said the project would be the first of its kind in the United States, though similar operations have been carried out in Europe. They said that they believed they had solved any ethical problems by adopting what they called very conservative standards for who would qualify as a donor.
To overcome fears that patients would be allowed to die for the sake of their organs, officials said that doctors and paramedics trying to resuscitate a patient would not be told whether the preservation unit was waiting in the wings until a supervisor had given the order to stop rescue efforts. The organ team, which will travel in a bright red and white ambulance marked “Organ Preservation Unit,” is supposed to remain out of sight.
The deceased patient would have to be as an organ donor and the family would would also have to lend their consent. According to the Times, the new trial program is being financed by a federal grant.
So, if you’re in Manhattan and are having a heart attack, wouldn’t it be pretty disconcerting to know that plans to harvest your organs are being made before you even reach the nearest hospital?

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 12:40pmOrgan donation is one thing, but if I ever have some paramedic ask me seconds after I just watched a loved one pass away if I’m willing to let them cut them up for parts…that paramedic is not going to enjoy my response.
Organ donation is fine and dandy for those that want to do it. But there is no denying that it’s a morbid practice. People have a chance to think it through and become organ donars every time they renew their drivers license. We don‘t need goon squads showing up to bully people into donating Aunt Sally’s organs.

I remember seeing the photos of what the Nazi’s did to people in their labratories, death camps and forced labor factories. The final evidence I showed for a series of reports I did on the subject to get the shock to the people of what true evil is, I mean TRUE EVIL, was the pictures of lampshades made of human skin, and one Gestapo guard wearing a vest made of tanned human hide tailored with the tattooed numbers to show his ‘kill list’
This person, the guard, later found his fate at the hands of the Polish resistance – do not ask what kind of demonstration they made of HIM. However fitting it was.

My M-I-L was still breastfeeding her 18-month old son, Marion and the Nazis decided she couldn’t work and take care of her child at the same time, so they killed her baby in front of her by injecting him with something she said smelled like kerosene. My M-I-L is still with us and is the single strongest human being I know.

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 2:37pmA second ambulance? That won’t last. They will eventually decide that in order to “save” taxpayers money, only one ambulance would be necessary. By eliminating the second ambulance, the operating costs of equipping and operating two vehicles, paying only one EMT driver and one EMT would be reduced more than half.
The EMTs would then be trained to save the live of the patient while insuring the physical condition of the organs needing to be harvested. Training should include the ability of the EMTs to assess the value of the patient’s survival as compared with the value of the potential harvested organs.
Criteria would likely include patient’s age (remaining productive life), social level (is there a social value to resuscitating patient-wealthy or influential friends or relatives), economic value (income level vs. family size), and what possible burden to society should patient survive (mental-physical condition).
Reminds me a little of the 1978 movie “Coma”, with Michael Douglas. Except the “patient evaluation” would take place in the ambulance, after picking up the patient and in transit. The ambulance would be directed either to the hospital, or to the organ retrieval depository.

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 12:07pmThat reference to the practice being done in Europe leaves out one very important point; there you do not need the families consent to harvest the organs after death, the doctors in many countries can take them if they so choose right on the spot regardless of anyone else protesting.
Death panels and organ harvesting is here indeed; then will come the part where the paramedics will be told that the ‘seriously injured’ or ‘economically disadvantaged’ are to be ‘hastened along’ to their final rewards; and then the organs are harvested regardless of our choices.

What if you have brain activity and your pulse is too low for the paramedic to recognize, whereas a doctor could? You’re willing to go under the knife and die when you could have survived? Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to transplant organs, and for the patients for the rest of their lives to take drugs so they don’t reject the organs? They don’t have the money to treat simple illnesses, but they can afford this atrocity?
Who is going to be licensed to surgically remove the organs????? an EMT? and what about a patient’s right to self determination? are we chucking that whole law out? The ONE TIME a person really needs a doctor is when they are dying or critically injured now instead there will be a harvest team waiting around the block- how disgusting!
What’s wrong with doing artificial CPR until they get to the hospital and be properly taken care of?

Posted on December 2, 2010 at 3:48pmcoming home from Glenn Beck’s 8/28 , I was stuck going over the George Washington Bridge for over an hour, I used ezpass in the fast lane, was charged $9.15 on bill for the $8.00 toll but continue to receive bills for $58. from new York port authority for failure to pay toll. I have sent them with each nastygram they send me a copy of the ezpaass statement with the charge that they say I didn’t pay. I have called to try to straighten it out but they still threaten me with legal action. Now they wish to decide what to do with our organs. They can’t get the little things correct.
