NYPD Bomb Squad Blows Up 5,000 Pounds of Seized Fireworks

What do you do after seizing 5,000 pounds of illegal fireworks? Blow them up.

That’s just what members of the NYPD bomb squad did Friday, after 20 arrests and taking possession of 300 cases of fireworks worth more than $25,000, according to the New York Post.

The blazing display took place at the NYPD firing station in the Bronx.

“We want everyone to enjoy the Fourth in the city, but fireworks in the hands of an amateur are extremely dangerous and illegal,” said Mayor Bloomberg.

Really??? That statement tells you everything you need to know about our government. We do not need you babysitting us.

What a lot of dumb asses! They should have sold them and put the money towards those crushing pensions. Who am I kidding? If they would have sold them, they would instead of created another unnecessary government position for which the taxpayer would be on the hook to foot the bill.

Another flippin waste of pixels and another non-news event. Report this! As of July 15 2011 purchasing gold and silver over the counter will be illegal thanks to the Dodd-Frank act. Or reporting on the Fort Calhoun nuclear plants flooding and backup pump failure. Or that Japans Fukushima nuclear plant accident is way way worse the first thought. No mainstream or lamestream media reporting is a given but Fox is even straining news through a wet sock.

    Just thinking out loud…

Why aren‘t fireworks protected as ’arms’???

Must arms be lethal to be protected??

Of course, there is the whole top-down, bottom-up thing to outlaw everything the socialist democrat people don’t like.

Looked like the epic last fire fight from the movie Platoon. I expected to see Charlie Sheen shaggin’ ass out of there like he had tiger blood in him.

It probably only took about $50,000 to blow up $25,000 worth of fireworks. Just wondering how many didn’t explode?

Concur, this seems an awful waste of fireworks. They could at least set them off at night and collect a donation to help some charity, or even re-sell them to a legit dealer in another state.

Hey man, when Roman Candles are outlawed, only outlaws will have Roman Candles!

Glad I live in Birmingham Alabama instead of the Peoples Police State of New York. Fireworks are legal here as well as guns and you don’t need a city permit to take a crap. The people that live in New York deserve everything they’re getting as well as the bankruptcy thats coming.

Is Bloomberg British? A descendent of Henry VIII maybe? His administration is anti American in every way. He and his thugs deserve to be sent back to England. They do not belong here.

Upon reflection, why wouldn’t authorities at least wait until night-time to set them alight.

It’s an interesting place to blow up fireworks that fly every-which direction. an abandoned quarry without vegetation would have been a safer place to blow up the stuff. Makes me wonder how many fires did they have to put out in the surrounding area??

    @Untamable Kate:

Understand that indeed, I just have to wonder how many people are going to be hurt and homes burned to the ground from the fireworks held by idiots out there this weekend? Blowing up illegal set of fireworks (2 1/2 tons is a LOT!!!) would be one big show…

I‘m actually a little bit surprised there isn’t more of that sort of thing. We always set them off in the street but I’ve seen people get those ones that are like a little hot air balloon and just release them. No telling where those end up.

I only wish they could test everyones intellegence before they sold fireworks to people in states where it is legal. My son and I enjoy setting off small fireworks on holidays, but there is always some nimrod doing something stupid with them. In Az if you are not responsible with anything that will ignite the area around you it can result in a horrific fire.
