An intense standoff between police and a an apparent suicidal atop New York’s famed Rockefeller Plaza just attended.

Gothamnist and Twitter users witnessed the incident this afternoon after a man, sitting over the edge at 30 Rockefeller Plaza this afternoon, threatened to jump from the 70-story New York City skyscraper.

Gothamist received a report of a jumper atop the building and FDNY confirmation at 4:10 p.m. The New York City news blog updated at 4:4o p.m.:

“According to an NBC employee watching the video feed, a cop ‘just jumped over the glass encasing. He is sitting across from him talking. Police man is connected to a bungie/rope.’ In addition, @rozzy Tweets: ‘Watching internal feed of man on top of Rock Center. He has an American flag bandana over his face and is also wearing a tie. NYPD on scene.’

The building serves as the headquarters for NBC. Witnesses said the jumper had several bags, a jug of water, and was handing policeman letters with what appeared to messages on them. Gothamist reports that, according to witnesses, the man seemed to be “rather young, at most lower 20s.”

Not funny and it did not have to be said. What would you be saying if it was your loved one up there? Giggle all you want but this is a person not an animated cartoon. What in the hell has happened to us that we have no compassion for a fellow human being?

The cops and fire department will bill the building owner. A lawyer will file for Medicaid and Social Security. If he’s an employee the lawyer will also sue for Workers Compensation. If he wasn’t an employee the building owner, building security and property liability insurance carrier will be sued. So this guy will probably come out pretty good in the long run.

Think of all the resources this wasted. Not only does he waste multiple cops time, but now he will have to undergo mental care at the cost of taxpayers as well. The cops should clear an area below so innocent people don’t get hurt, and let the man jump. Peel him off the pavement below, hose it off, and go about the rest of the day. Seems like a stupid way to go out though…it causes too much attention. If the guy wanted to go out with a bang, he should try jumping in front of a train. I’ve seen them consume whole deer and cattle, so a fat guy from NYC would be no issue.

How much did this cost the ‘sucker’ taxpayers of NY?
I think the MTA demands $100 a jump from a borough bridge.
Shelly Silver gets $35.00 a jump.
    :(

i might be wrong but let them jump, one less blood sucker on the American economy. matter of fact, we should really encourage more of this. oh wait we already do, we all sit there watching and video taping them, and cheering them on to their deaths. don’t judge, don’t judge you know you would be the first to line up to pay 39.99 for a public excuation there is no difference in this sort of free show!

Um! one bag had a Whopper and the other a Big Mac.I think a third had fries, couldn‘t make out if it was BK fries or Mickey D’s. I prefer Micky D’s myself, though the Whopper is better than the Big Mac.
One never know how long it may take the police to come and save One who is threathening to jump
One can get hungry and thirsty if the police takes too long to arrive.
One must plan for all contingencies.Who knows?, the police could have gotten stuck in traffic or had a traffic accident.

Seems a waste of resources to save those who would commit suicide. Aren’t they just seeking attention? And, like so many others who are undeserving, we give it to them. I get that he may have family or others who would be hurt by his death. But every time I hear someone’s threatening to jump, I wonder why we break our necks to stop him. Maybe it’s good riddance.
