NYPD Warns Women Not to Wear Short Skirts Because They Could Get Raped

NYPD Warns Women Not to Wear Short Skirts Because They Could Get Raped (Poll)Don’t wear short skirts — you could get raped.

That’s essentially the advice the New York Police Department is giving young women in one Brooklyn neighborhood following a slew of unsolved sexual attacks in the past few months.

The warnings are being met with outrage, with residents saying police should be focusing on catching the suspects, not criticizing women for what they choose to wear.

One South Park Slope resident told the Wall Street Journal about an encounter she had with an NYPD officer this past week:

Lauren, a South Slope resident, was walking home three blocks from the gym on Monday when she was stopped.

The 25-year-old, who did not want her last name to be used, was wearing shorts and a T-shirt when she claims a police officer asked if she would stop and talk to him. He also stopped two other women wearing dresses.

According to Lauren, the officer asked if they knew what was going on in the neighborhood. When they answered in the affirmative, he asked if they knew what the guy was looking for.

“He pointed at my outfit and said, ‘Don’t you think your shorts are a little short?’” she recalled. “He pointed at their dresses and said they were showing a lot of skin.”

He said that such clothing could make the suspect think he had “easy access,” said Lauren.

She said the officer explained that “you’re exactly the kind of girl this guy is targeting.”

Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne defended the warnings, telling the Journal in an email they’re “simply pointing out that as part of a pattern involving one or men that the assailant(s) have targeted women wearing skirts.”

“Officers are not telling women what not to wear — there’s a TV series that does that,” he said.

But Jessica Silk, a founder of Safe Slope, a neighborhood group that formed in response to the recent attacks, called the approach “completely inappropriate.”

“There have been reports that the women attacked were all wearing skirts,” she said. “Unfortunately this might be a common link between the women that were attacked but the message shouldn‘t be that you shouldn’t wear a skirt. The message should be that, ‘Here are ways that you can protect yourself.’”

Members of the community have been proactive in the wake of the attacks: In addition to Safe Slope, a campaign called the Brooklyn Bike Patrol also formed to escort women in the area home from the subway and local city council members funded a one-day self-defense class for residents.

Still, not everyone thinks the NYPD warnings are completely out of line.

Shannon Sharpe, a local resident, told the Journal that she’s stopped wearing high heels to work because it would be harder to run in them if she were being chased. She said she hasn‘t changed her clothing habits because she doesn’t really wear anything revealing to work, but said “if I did, then maybe I’d be more conscious of that.”

“It‘s frustrating because there’s probably something true to that,” she said of certain types of clothing attracting assailants’ attention.

Lauren completely disagreed.

“Where do you draw the line? I can’t wear shorts? Besides the fact that I wasn’t wearing anything that was inappropriate or provocative….I don’t think that should be part of the problem. At all.”

The low – life politicians who run NYC make it very difficult for women to get concealed carry permits and then they say this? Its like saying – ‘hey we want to encourage animals to roam the city freely and we dont want to risk anyone hurting them as they co about their appointed duties. And if you don’t want them performing their appointed duties on you, then hide your body from them
.” Society is repressed and victimized by the government – and more so in NYC than elsewhere.

Can we deal with this honestly? SHOULD women be able to walk around in short skirts without fear of sexual assault? YES.
SHOULD you be able to leave your car running with the doors unlocked in the parking ot of a convenience store when you run inside for a quick bottle of coke? YES
SHOULD you be able to leave your doors and windows unlocked without fear of thieves(and worse) breaking in? YES!
The problem is, what the police are pointing out in this case is the very real difference between “Should be able to…” and reality. We don’t live in a utopia. The cops are offering their warning based on that recognition. Those forces of political correctness who can’t handle this truth are part of the problem.

It’s kind of a paradox, isn’t? “Law enforcement” and trying to live life on your own terms?

Rape is an animal behavior perpetrated by “humans” that can’t (won’t) control their emotions or behaviors and act strictly in an animal way. It’s a violent attack against an innocent (Other than dress, in this case). But the police warn the potential victim. Rather than use strict enforcement on perps.

When the ‘law enforcement’ that you pay for through taxation warns victims, you are living in a surrealistic world that has the flavor of Honduras or South Africa or Zimbabwe. But not America. We are regressing into a third world nation. A has been nation.

allow people their constitutional rights to carry guns and protect themselves. Actually the problem goes much deeper Muslims contend that a pretty woman should be raped for exciting a man and that is proberly a root cause for a large percentage of rapes, New York citizens must not offend minorities and hunt down the criminals because to a Muslim she is asking for it. Lucky for them the woman has no say in the matter because strict gun control allows minorities to abuse women acording to their tribal ways and disallows the woman to defend herself. Perhaps the right to rape should be advertised to draw tourists

I think the police are justified in circulating the rapist’s mo. But they also need to circulate other details of the crimes. Always use a knife? Always subdue their victim in a certain way? Always near a dark alley? Always around a certain time? Are the victims around the same age? Are the victims predominately one ethnic group? Have the same hair color? etc etc

Serial rapists like serial killers almost always have a “pattern”. Of course that pattern can change but in over 90% of criminals it usually doesn’t veer too far one way or the other.

If they were giving them tickets or warnings for their outfits, that would be one thing. They’re not ordering them to wear one thing or another though.

I don’t think that they deserve anything for wearing short skirts, but if that’s what the attacker is going for, then they should be aware. We had the police stop by several years ago to tell us that a child molester lived across the street. It was good to know, so I could be sure to educate my kids to stay away from the guy, and to build a fence around my backyard so that they would be semi-protected.

Exactly! How is this such a difficult concept for some people to wrest with? All other things equal, try to put yourself in the rapist’s shoes (without gagging, for a moment). Would you find a more attractive target to be a girl wearing a thong and a mini skirt OR would you prefer one who is wearing jeans? Obviously the one in the skirt is going to be the more desirable as well as the safer option on average. Now when there is a SERIAL RAPIST on the loose and every one of his victims has been wearing a skirt, MAYBE it’s time to realize that 1+1=2. Is it a shame if you are unsafe without taking X precaution? Absolutely! But that doesn’t change the reality.

Like you said, it would certainly be nice if we lived in a world where we don’t need to lock our doors behind us, but that’s not our reality.

Seriously? Don’t ya think thats a little bit of a stretch?

I answered the survey and I said that I see their point but think it could have been handled differently. Obviously pulling random women aside in the street and telling them their outfit may attract a rapist would be insulting to the woman. I too would be offended, I see that. I don’t agree with that tactic. But I see no problem with giving women a heads up that there is a rapist out there and he tends to attack women wearing short skirts so they should keep that in mind when picking out their outfits in the morning. And personally, I would say thank you officer, that was nice of you to let me know. I will certainly keep that in mind.

It sounds like the NYPD has a profile of what this rapist is looking for in his victim. Some look for blonds with ponytails others for short hair…I think they have real concern and don’t want to see another innocent victim hurt. I‘ve been teaching Women’s Self Defense for over 25 years. As I tell the women in my class “Knowledge is Power”. It won’t hurt to be careful on what they wear until this low life is caught. I also believe they should be allowed to get a concealed carry permit. The 2nd amendment is being trampled on by liberals who are more concerned with criminal rights than the victims.

I call BS on this garbage. Why should women have to change their preferred grooming standards because someone doesn’t want to do their job? It’s not just a degrading request, but it‘s a capitulation to an inability of society and it’s enforcement agencies to control themselves and enforce the Law.

When police start to become the grooming police it’s a major problem. It won’t be far behind when women in this Country will have to become Sharia compliant. Not long after that and they will find themselves being whipped on street corners for having driven a car.

It is a free society for now. So women can wear what they want. But why do they wear skirts so short that you can see their crotch when they sit down or 85% of their leg when they stand?, or wear dress fronts cut so low that you can see 25% plus of their breasts?, or wear clothes so tight you can see every goose bump or a mole underneath?, or wear 6″ high heels?, or wear pushup for their breasts?, or pads for their shoulders? Or make up and finger nail polish? Is it so that no one will notice them? Or is it to attach attention to themselves? Or maybe it is just vanity run amok? I don’t know or care anyway what differences does it make? BUT, when you attract attention to yourself you can’t control who might be attracted can you. So wear women and men should wear what they want and know the risks. Life is about choices. The police just made an observation — women can ignore it if they wish….

With all due respect your post is totally off mark. Regardless or what drives a rapist — and this “power thing” has never really been proven anyway IMO. But that is not my point. It is a discussion as to what to do to minimize the risk of rape — whatever it’s “cause”. I think your premise — that all women are equally at risk regardless of what they wear — is unproven and without a rational basis. if you try to attract attention you will usually GET attention. Sometimes that might be good, sometimes it is very bad. No post that I have read here is supporting rape. That is a straw man IMO.

I do not think it’s wrong for the police to warn them. but the comment of “Don’t you think your shorts are a little short?’” or “that they were showing a lot of skin.” are not the best way for a public servant to warn people. Such comments imply judgement on the part of the officer. People don’t like to be judged. A simple comment that there is a rapist in the area that is targeting women wearing short skirts would be more appropriate and would be less likely to elicit objections from the public.

To imply the police are not doing their job by warning citizen rather than rather than getting the rapist off the off the streets is atrocious. Their job is to PROTECT the public, this includes many forms of prevention. I see this as the police trying to help protect people. Let’s use a little common sense here.

My point was to explain the difference between “what ought to be” in a “perfect world” and what IS in the real world. Did I endorse car theft, robberies, or rape? No. In point of fact, all I said was that we must be careful not to let political correctness and the desire for what “ought to be” overwhelm our common sense and our recognition about what IS. Now, you can say I’m ready to be a muslim if you like, but I suspect you’re just laying out a textual IED. You’d make a good Jihadi. (See, it works both ways)

These guys running around doing this are animals. They should be treated as such. I have the right to wear a beef sirloin belt through Yellow Stone if I wish, but I don’t because I am aware of the reaction it causes in the animals of Yellow Stone, specifically, the bears and wolves. Now, any animal capable of raping a woman, regardless of what she is wearing, should be castrated then incarcerated. As for her own protection, I suggest a woman not wear what sparks the/response in such animals, just as I suggest someone not going swimming of the coast of Florida whilst holding a tuna steak.

Use your freaking brains! The cops are not being sexist or victimizing the victims, they are simply saying there is a gang in the neighborhood with raping women in short skirts. Rape is not abt sex. It IS about power, control, and destruction.

Abt 90% of rapists have “normal” sexual outlets and attack for the sake of the attack and destruction created in the victim’s life.

Having worked w/countless victims/survivors, I can tell you I know exactly why the Bible makes rape a capital crime. Victims say it’s as if they had been murdered but are left to walk about. Rape victims have very high completed suicide rates for that reason. They use particularly lethal methods – hanging, jumping, guns, etc. Seldom do they try “cry for help” means like pills and wrist cutting.

A woman in a burka is just as susceptible to rape as one in “Daisy Dukes”!

Rape IS NOT about sex. It’s about violence.

Elena, while I agree with you on your take on what rape victims go through and that a rape can happen any place, any where. The cops warning woman that there is serial rapist out and his victims have been woman who are wearing short skirts is giving woman a heads up. The cops were trying to tell these girls to be careful and know your surroundings. Anyone who knows a rape victim, knows that one’s life will never be the same. If I were the woman, I would thank the cops for the heads up and be on the look out for the perpetrator. Instead, it’s easier to call the cops out and have them look like the bad guys. This situation reminds me of the way racism is thrown around like a wet dish rag with no meaning at all. If the cops did not warn the girls and they became victims, than these same woman would most likely sue the police for not warning them. I believe that cops were in a no win situation. Damned if the did and damned if they didn’t.

So let us take what you proposed not all women will be so surprised that they won;t be able to use their weapon for self defense. So you want those women raped as well?

Let’s say 40% of women are taken unawares and can’t used their weapon for self defense. Okay, granted that could happen.

What about the other 60%? You going to take their weapons away by law & let them be victimized?

I can’t believe (I guess I can) that they tell women not to resist the rapist in NY! If you do not resist you will be raped for sure or much worse! As soon as something begins, FIGHT BACK in any way possible. Scream, kick, punch, gouge, scratch, knee, use what ever you have with everything you’ve got. Draw as much attention as you possibly can (maybe someone will help). Catch him off guard with your resistance and you have a much better chance he will change his mind.

If they really cared about their women, they would not be encouraging them to wear more covering clothing as a defensive measure but to pack a weapon. If not a hand gun then a handbag of rocks or a screwdriver (hurts more than a knife and harder to pull out).

While I can see how this might have been taken the wrong way, it seems clear to me that these officers were only doing their job in providing these individuals with their profile on the assailant; furthermore, they were compelled to point out to these people that they each could be targeted by this profiled assailant due to their respective characteristics, such as their looks and dress.

I wasn’t privy to this conversation, just the comments of the conversation, but I’m not sure how this could have been handled in a better way.

Oh my gosh…people are equating rape with what a woman is wearing? Anyone see creeping Shariah here? Rape is NOT, I repeat NOT, about what a woman is wearing…it is about CONTROL, PUNISHMENT AND DOMINANCE! If it were about what a women wears, then women in Arab and Islamic countries wouldn’t get raped since they are covered from HEAD TO TOE. But rape is rampant in the Middle East as a way of punishment, control and dominance. Do not be deceived, this statement or opinion about “what she is wearing” is one step towards Shariah and the reemergence of trying to take away women’s rights.

I agree. Rapists rape for control. Why else would some sicko rape a 90 year old woman or a fat woman? If rapists wanted attractive hot chicks to rape, they would not be letting loose on fat old women. However, this suspect seems to have a thing for sexy dressed women – what the Police should be doing instead of trying to suggest that women dress like men, is advocating the lawful possession of firearms by legal citizens. My Lady dresses very sexy and I do not think she will ever be attacked because she carries “The Judge” and a Taurus 85 revolver. Go ahead and try to rape her, she’ll unload those .410 shotgun shells into you.

We left NY because NY refuses to allow legal citizens to carry personal firearms. We will not be victims.

The police said the rapist is targeting women in shorts and skirts, women who “show a lot of skin”.

That sounds like the tactic many Muslim men take. Women who dress like “sluts” in their eyes are dishonoring them, the men that is, and they deserve to be punished. So “righteous” Muslim men attack and rape women who inflame them with lust because they are dressing provacatively.

Could we have a lone jihadist rapist here?

You are absolutely right! Instead on focusing on checking out the women and giving them clothing advice, why not go after the piece of crap that is committing the crime. The 20% who thinks that this kind of mentality is ok..that it is actually partially the woman’s fault.. wake up! One in six women nationally will be raped or assaulted. There are woman surrounding you that have been violated in their life and you are blaming them. If it isn’t their clothing they are wearing, its the party she was at, or its because she hung out with the wrong crowd, she should have fought harder, she should have stayed away from her father, or she should have known better then to walk down that dark alley. Most of the time she knows the guy anyway and has her guard down. Its about power. Even if the man was castrated they would still rape with an object. Its not about the woman. Its about being in control. It is NEVER the victims fault. NEVER. NO means NO.

I am SHOCKED that the NYPD would even consider this tactic. They have so much training for this sort of thing that they should know better.

Empower the women. But focus on catching the perpetrator.

If you know he is going after women wearing short skirts and do nothing…you are a fool. Safety is paramount and if you don’t recognize that, I pity you. Why is there such offense to reality.

In my opinion, it is completely appropriate for the PD to give warnings or public service announcements while they look for the suspect. If they didn’t give a warning about a common link throughout the cases and someone else was victimized that could have been warned – it‘d be the PD’s fault in the public view. Everyone needs to take responsibility for themselves and use caution when out amongst the public. Here’s a question, do we know that the person claiming to be NYPD really was an officer?

This has nothing to do with blaming the victim. The police are simply pointing out ways that local women can protect themselves. If these women are too dumb to recognize that, then it’s there loss if they actually do end up getting assaulted by this guy.

And these morons at Safe Slope say the police should focus on catching the perpetrator instead of handing out advice to potential victims? Well, who says you can’t do both?! It‘s not like it takes a whole lot of time or resources out of a cop’s day to take a woman aside for 5 seconds of advice. And it’s also not like beat cops are necessarily the ones doing the investigating anyway. That’s the job of detectives.

Think of it like this. There is a gasoline spill in a parking lot. The clean-up crew is onhand to resolve the issue, but while handling their business of cleaning the spill they put up notifications for people to not smoke cigarettes in the area. Would you criticize the hazmat team for taking this extra step to ensure the safety of people in the area? Or would you thank him for the warning and then either take his advice or leave it?

I swear to God, these chicks are way too oversensitive. This is feminism in action. Feminists believe that women, even if it appears they are acting stupidly, are actually flawless beings whose actions should not be questioned. Especially by a mere man.

Quit being so PC about the police trying to give the public a heads-up and know that if you wear short skirts it may increase the chances.

There are probably other factors like walking alone at night, or letting someone pick you up that you don’t know.

Not a thing. Do you see women as objects that are here to gratify you? Or are they humans who have the same rights as you and are your equals?

The rapist does not see women as equals; he sees them as less than himself. He gets pleasure out of humiliating them and destroying them using sex as his weapon. What should bring the joy of intimacy is used as the weapon.

No one blames young women for the way they dress when it comes to rape. It is a cruel and horrible crime. That aside, I think young girls and young women dress very inappropiately today. Nothing even close to modest, nothing left to the imagination. Ok, I’m older, maybe that makes a difference. But, I will never ever blame the recipient of a rape. I do believe the police are trying to protect women and their suggestions come from the concern. Lets not make the police the bad guys.

Just a bit of logic here, Those who are trying to understand how one goes about rape (ie: looking for easy access) are not rapists. They are trying to find logical patterns to an emotional event. These patterns do not exist. I do not want to get in to the mindset of such an animal, but as animals use very little if any higher logic, trying to find logic in this animal’s action is pointless.
