(Updated) Mubarak Says He Will Step Down After Sept. Elections Amid Obama’s Urging

(Updated) Mubarak Says He Will Step Down After Sept. Elections Amid Obamas Urging Editor’s note: See this story’s updates at the bottom for the latest information.

The New York Times is reporting that President Obama is urging Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to not seek re-election. According to unnamed sources cited by Arab TV outlet Al Arabiya, Mubarak will oblige the president and announce he will step away after his term expires in September:

President Obama has told the embattled president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, that he should not run for another term in elections in the fall, effectively withdrawing American support for its closest Arab ally, according to American diplomats in Cairo and Washington.

Al Arabiya television, citing unnamed sources, reported that Mr. Mubarak would announce in a nationwide address Tuesday evening that he would not run for another term.

The message was conveyed to Mr. Mubarak by Frank G. Wisner, a seasoned former diplomat with deep ties to Egypt, these officials said. Mr. Wisner’s message, they said, was not a blunt demand for Mr. Mubarak to step aside now, but firm counsel that he should make way for a reform process that would culminate in free and fair elections in September to elect a new Egyptian leader.

This back channel message, authorized directly by Mr. Obama, would appear to tip the administration beyond the delicate balancing act it has performed in the last week — resisting calls for Mr. Mubarak to step down, even as it has called for an “orderly transition” to a more politically open Egypt.

If Mubarak does announce today that he is stepping aside but not for another seven months, it’s unclear if that will placate the thousands of protesters currently gathered in the heart of Cairo.

UPDATE:

In a speech on Tuesday, Mubarak confirmed he would not seek re-election. The AP reports:

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak says he will not run for a new term in office in September elections and will work during the rest of his term for a “peaceful transfer of power” in a new attempt to defuse massive protests demanding his immediate ouster.

In a speech aired on state TV Tuesday night, Mubarak said, “In all sincerity, regardless of the current circumstances, I never intended to be a candidate for another term.”

He says he will work during “the final months of my current term” to carry out the “necceasary steps for the peaceful transfer of power.”

Unions started the riots in Greece…then this thing snowballed. Remember “Workers of the World Unite” ??? Dale Rathke SEIU and Andy Stern. I believe we have the same group of people behind all of this…organizing the workers….organizing the young non-workers…organizing the busing of the radical groups here in America …. This is the ‘gathering’ of the Progressives, Marxists, Communists, and then the Muslims. The first group just wants to Rule the World,…the Muslims want to kill us…The Muslims will destroy the other groups when they have finished doing the work for them, just like the Progressives throw people under the bus …

First off, Obama has no right telling Mubarak what to do. It is none of the U.S.’s damned business! Secondly, if the people want this dictator out, and they do, he is toast. I cannot believe this arrogant dictator telling the people to wait until September. Furthermore, if you believe all these lies the MSM is telling you, you are crazy. Sure there are Muslims there, but there are just as many secular Egyptians there as well. They all want a change! We should clean our house up before we pass judgment on those people in the Middle East. Last time I checked, we are turning into a full blown police state:

What a mess and I dont think anyone has a real solution for their problem. I have heard that the military has better grip on realty there… maybe they should seize power and try to bring some order to the country until Sept.; better for that to happen than rush someone into power.

If the military did this it would give the people time to find someone they feel confident in electing. BHO has no clue what he is doing and should keep out at this point, everything he touches goes to sh*t!

Just for the record, the fall of the Shah and the establishment of Iran’s Islamic Republic brought about a serious worsening of US-Iranian relations, but not necessarily the quasi-Cold War that has prevailed since 1979. The Shah probably could not have been kept in power anyway, once his armed forces had turned decisively against him.

Carter’s real mistake was allowing the deposed Shah to seek medical treatment in America. This suggested to Iranian militants that the US was preparing a coup to restore him as in 1953, leading to the Iranian hostage crisis–which proved to be the point of no return for American policy. Of course, Khomeini was perhaps looking for a pretext to tweak America’s tail, but Carter fell into the trap.

Dictatorship refers to an autocratic form of absolute rule by leadership unrestricted by law, constitutions, or other social and political factors within the state, and can be obtained by force or inheritance.

What is a key component here, is Islam and Communism are NOT that far apart in ideology. It is the theocracy, as to where they diverge. This is the same split in Germany, the Nazi’s and the Communists, the Nazi‘s were a ’blood order’, a theocracy, Arian Nation, form of Socialism, and Communists were athiests, could care less about any human life, it was about human slavery. Who will win this round? Iran come to mind? Those that believe in something, spritual, will win in the end. So my money is on the Islamo-Fascist, any one wanna take a bet? LOL…

      @ CHEEZWHIZ –

Okay, I sent the link to Senators Chambliss and Isakson and to Representative Westmoreland. The House is out until February 8, but I requested a reply from each.

I’m thinking that it would be a good idea for evrerybody to DEMAND a House committee investigation into Lt. Col. Terry Lakin’s court martial, too. I’ve already done so.

–”President Obama has told the embattled president of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, that he should not run for another term in elections in the fall,”–

would obama do the same if we all went out and protested him???

i just pray that when the Egyptians protest for democracy and freedom they don’t get radical Islam and sharia law instead…

Obama did nothing for the Iranian people who truly want freedom against the Muslim Brotherhood type “government” they have while he wants to pave the path for Sharia in Egypt which the majority of Egyptians polled want.
      ———
After seeing commies on the streets of Jordan today, guess which countries have not caught the
      “ protest ” bug ?
      Turkey, Syria and Iran.
Now lets see how our regime has reacted
to Turkey on the flotilla incident,
to Syria since Pelosi took office in 2007
      and
to Iran on their rigged elections ??

These 3 have always evaded any adverse comment .
I think there is a song that explains it :

Nope, sorry Hussien Obama, you were too little too late. The announcement that muBARAcK planned to not run for re election came before your announcement that you “urged” this action.

This is NOT your Moses moment, you will not be given credit for Pharaoh LETTING THE PEOPLE GO.

Sorry, try again. I’m sure the LSM is eating it up.

Again, stunning failure on the part of Obama’s foreign policy. The people of Egypt aren’t going to accept Mubarak remaining in office for another 8 months, and that is what we have just approved. You just painted the US into a corner, when this whole time we should have kept our mouths shut until it played itself out fully… if protests continue, you are now seen as continuing to side with the dictator, and fostering more distrust with any incoming regime. Obama should have demanded Mubarak leave office within days or weeks and voice support the new VP fully until free elections are held in September. Now not only do we have to deal with the perception that we continue to back this dictator, but it will also hamper our efforts in the coming months to work with democratic parties within Egypt leading up to the election. Epic Fail, Barry.

The whole point of the protests was that Mubarak son was going to run in the election.
Mubarak wasn’t going for re-election anyway.

Funny that Obama said he could see these protesters in EGYPT … when he couldn’t “see” the TEA Party in Washington D.C.!

Apologies again, hit the return key by mistake. I’m new to this blog (though Beck is my daily must view show)

Is there a direct Email to him (or via moderators)?

I just wanted to send him two links to my articles on how GOOGLE is burying information that both Glenn (better way) and I have been trying to get out to the public but how they have BURIED http://www.antimullah.com so deeply in their search engines that a year of posting (some 600 articles) has disappeared though it is on the blog.

      AND
      http://noiri.blogspot.com/2011/02/google-search-try-antimullahcom-2010.html

I was in Iran in 1978/79 when the February revolt took power and had been involved with pro-Shah millitary in trying to stop the Carter/Soviet/Khomeini Marxist-Islamic overthrow, run out of the Soviet Tehran Embassy.

What is happening now is the same playbook but 1000 times worse. I am trying to get the word out that we post a couple of articles a day (with four figure number of daily visitors from over 120 countries) but clearly would like a boost to compensate for the Google smoke screen.

Anything Glenn or you can do would be appreciated. to basically have us added to their favorites. A mention by Glenn would certainly help – and we both have absolutely similar mindsets and messages.

      Be healthy, happy and thrive.
