Obama Admin Backs Bill to Overturn Defense of Marriage Act

The White House is supporting legislation to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The controversial law, passed in 1996 by large majorities in both the House and Senate and signed by Democratic President Bill Clinton, defines marriage as between one man and one woman. In contrast, a new bill — the Respect for Marriage Act — would repeal DOMA and clear the way for gay couples to be federally recognized.
The Obama administration’s stance on the reversal bill emerges the evening before the first-ever Senate hearing is scheduled to discuss repealing DOMA. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, among others, is praising the president’s support for the gay community. Rea Carey, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force writes:
President Obama did the right thing today by announcing his support of the Respect for Marriage Act. In doing so, he joins the large and growing chorus urging for an end to DOMA, a discriminatory, unjust and far-reaching law. There is no sound defense of the indefensible DOMA, which singles out and selectively denies fundamental rights to legally married same-sex couples…
Press secretary Jay Carney made the announcement Tuesday, a day before the first Senate hearing on a bill by California Sen. Dianne Feinstein that would overturn the Defense of Marriage Act. ABC’s Jake Tapper has more:
“The president has long called for a legislative repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, which continues to have a real impact on the lives of real people –our families, friends and neighbors,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said at today’s press briefing.
“He is proud to support the Respect for Marriage Act…which would take DOMA off the books once and for all,” said Carney. “This legislation would uphold the principle that the federal government should not deny gay and lesbian couples the same rights and legal protections as straight couples.”
President Obama had already announced that he views the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional. He also had ordered the Justice Department to stop defending it in court. But, until now, advocates have criticized the administration for not moving swiftly enough on issues that impact the gay community. In fact, in June, The Blaze noted that the president was harshly criticized at the left-wing Netroots Nation conference for his lack of action on both immigration and gay marriage.
While Obama may certainly be genuine in advocating for gays and lesbians, the 2012 campaign season is just heating up. It’s not out of the realm of belief to assume that the president is seeking to secure votes from associated electoral cohorts. Recent actions and decisions — including this most recent development — show the president working fervently to court the gay vote. This latest move to support overturning DOMA will potentially score the president much-needed political points among left-leaning interest groups.

Posted on July 19, 2011 at 10:01pmHey posters! I have some horse and buggy stock that I’d invite you to invest in. And there’s this new invention called a slide rule that you might consider as a stock option.
Okay, sarcasm aside, feel free to invest your time and energy opposing efforts to legalize gay marriage. This isn’t any different than opposition to blacks eating in restaurants, or black marrying whites. There was a period of opposition, but when the old guard left and a new generation made the laws, then those discriminatory practices ended (at least in theory, although I know prejudicial practices still exist).
I can only speak from the sphere of my knowledge, but based on that, teenagers don‘t give a dang about a person’s orientation, or their color. Yes, there’s still prejudice, but far less than when I was young.
This is just one of those things. You can oppose it, that’s fine. But the tide, the tsunami, of history will eventually sweep away this prejudice. More and more, young people care less and less a person’s color, religion or sexual orientation. The world is more and more beginning to judge a person based on the “content of their character.”

Riiiiight, JZS, because all those racist laws were ancient and universal, like the idea that marriage is only between a man and a woman. Never in the history of man, until our enlightened time, did anyone think that blacks and whites should marry? Is that what you are saying? That’s why the issues are the same?
You are so full of it. Not to see the difference between overturning racist laws, that had no long history of existence and could not claim anything close to universal historical consensus, and the universal definition of marriage omly shows you to be deliberately irrational.
Let me clue you in to some basic sciebtific realities: There is no such thing as a black race or white race. These are artificial and arbitrary definitions. To ignore “racial” distinctions is simply to acknowledge that they are merely the temporary dominance of secondary characteristics within subgroups of the same species. Male and female, on the other hand, are very definite biological realities, and nearly universal in the animal kingdom. To ignore that difference is closer to ignoring the difference between alive and dead than it is to ignoring the difference between “white” and “black”, or between blue and brown eyed.

Report Post »Opposition to homosexuality is so far off the charts different from racism.
First and foremost, because GOD — Creator of all things, calls it an abomination.
And secondarily to that – because it defies nature, as if you even needed a secondary reason.
Racism was/is stupidity on the part of man. We are all equal human beings. The color of our skin does not determine a ranking system.
Opposition to gay marriage is not an anti-equality issue nor a bigotry issue, despite what proponents think.

You obviously have no clue what this kind of power-grab implies. Who said marriage is the only way to procreate? That comment was foolish. Posted on July 19, 2011 at 7:49pmThis oversteps the boundary of church and state. The federal government has no right to pass laws that make doctrines of religious beliefes incorrect and against the law. Virtually all religions consider a marriage is between one man and one woman. Is this wrong? Is it the governments place and responsibility to say what religious beliefs are wrong and lawless? It is not only the church’s beliefs but the beliefs of most Americans and people of the world, Don‘t give me examples of othe’s, still a minoroty and not Christian or Judao Christian beliefs. This action again usurps the powers of the sovereignity of state powers as Obamacare over reaches it authority. If this passes and Obamacare is not repealed, there is nothing the government can not delegate and involve themselves in your life. Nothing. Next is marriage between someone and an animal? Plant? It is not governments responsibility to determine religious beliefs.

I’m glad the DOMA passed a while back, and I hope it sticks around, because I agree with Gadsdenpatriot, how silly it would be to have spouses issued to us, or be able to sue someone for infringing on a right by turning down a marriage proposal?

If you prefered to co-habitate in a long term relationship with someone of the same sex and have the same legal rights of marriage, civil union were the means. The Government cant outlaw a privilege given by God or any other religious institution where marriage between a man and woman is recognized. The Government is trying to over step their own precious separation of Church and State by infiltrating in on what the Church recognizes as a marriage. If marriage was a right within itself then EVERY hetero person of age under the current laws that wants to be married would currently be married. The thing about rights is that if there isnt a preset rule, so to speak, of the right, then anyone and everyone could change every issue to favor them and make it a right. Sort of like a child who is making up the rules to a game while the game is being played in order to win the game in every situation.

All those restrictions are imposed by our modern society’s idea of what marriage properly means. Other cultures in history have thought differently on them. But the one restriction that all cultures throught time and over the world have held is that marriage cannot be between two members of the same sex.
So tell me how we can overturn that ancient and universal restriction and not throw the others into doubt.

Biblical archaeologist, Ron Wyatt discovered the ruins of Sodom and Gomorrah southeast of the Dead Sea in 1989. These devastated Mesopotamian style cities were covered with millions of partially incinerated sulfur balls and tons of ash. Clearly defined walls, some thirty to forty feet high can be found among the ruins.
Evidence of heat exceeding 4000 degrees Fahrenheit can be seen in the rock strata and ruins throughout the cities. Comparable destruction can also be found at the epicenters of nuclear detonations.
Such evidence validates the accuracy of the Hebrew Scriptures, and again shatters secular attempts to “mythologize” this ancient catastrophe.

The only thing left after that is to invent a reason that God felt the need to do this, pass the story down by mouth and write the convoluted version down centuries later. Instances of homosexuality in mammal and bird species has been long known to be relatively common. Species that form mating pairs for life however are not all that common in mammals, although they do exist, and are a bit more common in birds. There was a rather famous pair of male penguins at the Bronx Zoo that exhibited mating and pairing behaviors with one another exclusively for six years.

Well, the list could go on. I would encourage you to do a little research. I suggest starting with Bonobos.
