Obama Admin Gave Half-Billion-Dollar Loan to Gore-Connected Electric Car Company to Build Cars in… Finland?

Obama Administration Gave Half Billion Dollar Loan to Al Gore Connected Electric Car Company Fisker to Build in Finland

An electric car company that received more than a half-billion-dollar Obama administration-approved loan is reportedly now assembling its first line of cars in rural Finland, rather than in the United States. What’s more, the car company, Fisker Automotive, is funded by a venture capital firm whose partners include former Vice President Al Gore.

To make matters worse, Fisker is more than a year behind in rolling out its $97,000 luxury “Karma” car, funded in part with Department of Energy funds. A mere 40 Karmas have thus far been produced, with only two delivered to customers — one of whom is famed actor Leonardo DiCaprio.

ABC reports:

With the approval of the Obama administration, an electric car company that received a $529 million federal government loan guarantee is assembling its first line of cars in Finland, saying it could not find a facility in the United States capable of doing the work.

Vice President Joseph Biden heralded the Energy Department’s $529 million loan to the start-up electric car company called Fisker as a bright new path to thousands of American manufacturing jobs. But two years after the loan was announced, the job of assembling the flashy electric Fisker Karma sports car has been outsourced to Finland.

“There was no contract manufacturer in the U.S. that could actually produce our vehicle,” the company’s founder and namesake told ABC News. “They don’t exist here.”

Henrik Fisker said the U.S. loan has been spent on engineering and design work that stayed in the U.S., not on the 500 manufacturing jobs that were exported to a rural Finnish firm, Valmet Automotive.

“We’re not in the business of failing; we’re in the business of winning. So we make the right decision for the business,” Fisker said. “That’s why we went to Finland.”

But shipping 500 jobs abroad is only part of the odd equation. According to ABC:

Fisker is part of a $1 billion bet the Energy Department has made in two politically connected California-based electric carmakers producing sporty — and pricey — cutting-edge autos. Fisker Automotive, backed by a powerhouse venture capital firm whose partners include former Vice President Al Gore, predicts it will eventually be churning out tens of thousands of electric sports sedans at the shuttered GM factory it bought in Delaware. And Tesla Motors, whose prime backers include PayPal mogul Elon Musk and Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, says it will do the same in a massive facility tooling up in Silicon Valley.

Meanwhile, Tesla’s SEC filings reveal the start-up has lost money every quarter, and while its federal funding is intended to help the company mass-produce a $57,400 Model S sedan, ABC reports that the carmaker has never tackled a project so vast — raising doubts about the company’s ability to produce.

An investigation by ABC News and the Center for Public Integrity’s iWatch News slated to air on “Good Morning America,” purportedly found that the DOE’s bet carries risks for taxpayers, has raised concern among industry observers and government auditors, and raised additional questions about the way in which billions of dollars in loans for smart cars and green energy companies are appropriated.

Ironically, the Fisker’s $100,000 price-tag eliminates the “other 99%” of the potential customer base. That may be just as well, since it offers worse fuel efficiency than many gas-guzzling SUV’s.

Forbes reports:

The Fisker Karma electric car, developed mainly with your tax money so that a bunch of rich VC’s wouldn’t have to risk any real money, has rolled out with an nominal EPA MPGe of 52.

Not bad? Unfortunately, it’s a sham. This figure is calculated using the grossly flawed EPA process that substantially underestimates the amount of fossil fuels required to power the electric car…

As I calculated in my earlier Forbes article, one needs to multiply the EPA MPGe by .365 to get a number that truly compares fossil fuel use of an electric car with a traditional gasoline engine car on an apples to apples basis. In the case of the Fisker Karma, we get a true MPGe of 19. This makes it worse than even the city rating of a Ford Explorer SUV.

Nice car that I could never afford at this price but it will be made in Delaware when that plant is ready. The next model will cost half as much and they are very nice cars. Made with some great American engineering that’s done in Anaheim California with a very large staff, hundreds of jobs there. It would appear that they are not having a good experience in Finland and I would think they would want out of there asap. I heard that Valmet (a contract car assembly plant) is either on strike or about to be right now so they have labor issues as well. They assemble several different car lines there in short runs. The Delaware plant should be ready soon and I’m sure they will be relieved as the travel to Finland alone is quite a burden to carry. Of all the projects that this administration has supported this one could make it even if it were not a hybrid type car, which personally I would prefer at this level.

The Obama administration is smelling more like a dead skunk each day. There’s no telling what has been given away without the taxpayers knowledge.

Of course we‘re supposed to believe that Congress and the Senate doesn’t know either where our money is ending up. I’ll bet SOME is in their pockets. Our whole government process is corrupt to the core, that‘s why they don’t do anyhting about Obama’s failed policies.

The used 1994 Toyota that I bought for $200.00 gets 24 mpg city, 35 mpg highway and I’m still tuning it for better milage. The CO2 coming out of the pipe is feeding plants and trees everywhere I go.

Hey Algore, try to beat my GREEN combination with your Frisker (frisking elites everywhere).

Hey I’ve got a 92 Honda civic vx that on a really crappy day gets 40 mpg. It regularly gets 45 mpg. 230,000 miles on it and it still purrs. I‘m in total defense when I drive it but it’s a lot of fun. Only one small battery for starting also.

Go point!!!! The lib’s love trees and grass (both kinds) yet they want to starve the trees by limiting the amount of CO2!!!!

I say cut down all the old trees and bury them deep in the ground. This will be Carbon Sequestration.
Then plant new young fast growing trees that consume the CO2.

      LOL

In my perhaps singular and worthless opinion, what you imply is a HUGE part of the problem with our political system. Once something is reported on, it becomes “old news”, and should never be mentioned again, apparently.
I believe that even when it ►IS◄ ‘old’ news, there is great value to be gathered in reminding people that whatever the “flavor of the week” scandal might be, it is nothing more then a continuation of bad policy decisions made previously. Consider it something like a “preponderance of evidence” that this Administration makes lots and lots of bad decisions, costing the taxpayer more and more wasted money. Do NOT allow the spin masters to claim that whatever current “Huh” is in the news is a stand alone event, a decision made in a vacuum. The incredible waste of money for Green anything is,IMO, a criminal act, and should be treated as such. Half a billion here, half a billion there, tens and hundreds of millions for start up companies that have no chance of being profitable in the reasonable future, and what are the terms of paying the loans back? American taxpayer money ‘loaned’ to a company that promptly says that all the real work has to take place in some other country? It may not be, by definition, shipping American jobs overseas, but it sure as hell means that American tax dollars aren’t doing Americans any good whatsoever.
It is, to put it mildly, an insane notion that our tax dollars fund a foreign economy!

@USNJimRetired Good commentary. I would like to know why US funded anything to a global corporation (Fiskars) based in Finland that USA citizens already made wealthy with products such as scissors (I have two pair and paid taxes) and referred to as a start up company in article. Another NWO story? Your opinion may be singular but it is very valuable and I wish you would express more. Please.

Legendarytwo. Perhaps you meant complicite, but, I know sometimes spell check changes things after you have typed it, and, sometimes, is not correct for the meaning. But, kudo’s. You hit the nail on the head. Establishment Repubicans fear the tear party beause they know if the tea party voted in conservatives get a say, their lobbying, cronyism will come to an abrupt halt much as the liberals are concerned. I pray one day that middle ameraicans wake up whom I would like to believe are the majority, and, one day, we could have a third party that would trounce the minority from the progessive side and the republican progressive side.
