Obama Admin Reverses Decision to Allow Drilling in Eastern Gulf

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The Blaze/AP) — President Barack Obama‘s administration won’t allow any new oil drilling in the eastern Gulf of Mexico for at least the next seven years because of the BP oil spill.

A senior administration official told The Associated Press on Wednesday that drilling leases won’t be considered in the waters off Florida as part of the change. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision hadn’t been announced yet.

He said that because of the BP spill, the administration now understands the need to elevate safety and environmental standards. Before the spill, the administration had considered a plan to allow drilling in the eastern Gulf.

According to the New York Times, drilling would remain under a moratorium “until stronger safety and environmental standards were in place.”

Drilling can continue in the central and western Gulf, however only under a set of new safeguards that were put in place after April’s BP oil spill.

The decision reverses a decision in March to open up more of the Gulf to offshore drilling.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar is expected to discuss the decision later Wednesday afternoon.

    This president and his puppet masters are destroying our USA. When the oil drilling moratorium was initiated our president gave billions of dollars to Brazil and Mexico to enhance their drilling activities. Pray tell where will Mexico be drilling–in the same depth of waters that are now too dangerous for the USA to drill in. Odumma is by design destoying jobs in the US because that is in their game plan to weaken the masses and swoop in and save them later. Redistibution of wealth at its finest!!! I say IMPEACH the BASTARD!!!!!

    Barack Obama did not hear the people on 2 November, this is because he is intent on his pursuit of destroying this great country and turning us into a world socialist state. Of course we are not going to allow this to happen and this cockroach better get this well planted in his nappy head right now. We are not made that way. Period. To think he loans money to a South American country for oil exploration but denies us the same it treachery and he should be tried for treason and sent to prison for life. I only wish we will not have to suffer with this cowardly traitor for two more years.

    It was the Van Jones poetry slam that has caused this! The president heard those heartwrenching poems and decided to bend to the will of the people and ban drilling for seven more years! WE need to pay extreme attention here. This man is not planning on leaving office in 2013 or 2017. All of these marxist schemes take place in a second term or after a second term. Look to the south. Didnt you hear? There is a wind powered factory that builds the windmills and solar panels. The employees all drive solar powered cars to work to build them. Once built, they are transported on solar powered trucks. Once on location they are offloaded with solar powered cranes. All the wiring is insulated with a NON-petroleum based rubber. I am assuming that those solar powered cars and trucks are hovercrafts since they couldnt have tires made from crude oil products.

    A moratorium on drilling in the East and Gulf reduces the world’s available oil supplies. This, of course, will result in an increase in the value of oil reserves. Since BP has trillions of dollars of oil reserves, who do you think benefits from this moratorium. The gain in value of BP’s reserves will be much, much greater than the cost of paying for the damages. Especially since most of those damages were distributed to Mr. Obama’s political cronies.
    Perhaps the new Congress should investigate the BP oil spill to determine if the conspiracy existed. http://commonsense21c.com/

      The sad part is, if we drilled for our own oil we wouldn’t be sending so much money offshore and we could employ some of the 10% of the US (on the books, and maybe even some of the extra 7-10% who are off the books) who are unemployed.

      While we’re at it, why not tap all the Texas wells that were plugged back in the ‘80’s because the oil costed more to pump out of the ground than it could be sold it for? Surely, that wouldn’t be a problem these days.

      Right or Wrong, the off shore area is owned by the Federal Government, and as such the Congress and Grated in the Executive Branch Authority as to how the Mineral Rights are utilized.

      Congress can Cede this back to the states or pass a law requiring the leases, but under the current, and constitutional law this is allowed. The Federal Government, like any other land holder, has that right. We (the people) ceded ownership of these lands to the Nation as a whole, thus ceded control of the rights to use the land to the government. This can be changed, but Obama currently does have this power.

      What I find odd is how he thinks he can control it for 7 years? his term ends in 2 and even if we as, by come evil punishment, reelected that would be a max of 6 more years before a new president would change it. So I guess Obama is going to be the First American King

      It’s not a constitutional law, sorry. Powers not explicitly granted to the Federal government are reserved to the states, or the people, respectively. There is no “except” or “you can sell them/give them to the Feds” clause that I can see.

      Further, only Congress can make law. The executive branch can only sign it, or veto it. What it can’t do is dictate and create edicts out of thin air.

      How dare a serf question his master!!!

      Isn’t this part of what kicked off the French Revolution? The kings and princes did whatever they wanted whenever they wanted.

      @GHOSTOFJEFFERSON….Could this possibly fit under imminent domain? One thing we have forgotten these last 2 years is every level of government abusing imminent domain. I’d try to give examples but I just ate a huge turkey sandwich, and the triptophan is slaying me…must sleep now…

      B S, this administration is crippling the energy in this country and keeping us dependent on foreign oil. GOP, you guys had better be raising the roof on Congress! This is absurd and there needs to be outrage from the west coast to the east coast. If the west coast doesn’t want it, I suggest we just let the secede and go about our daily lives. That way the liberals can all move out there and the conservatives can move central and east. Then we can see who’s smarter.

      @GHOSTOF JEFFERSON
      I hear ya. I understand , however, that Congress is a moot point and POTUS can utilize executive order, priviledged circumvention, or dictatorship to push his agenda. So what if more jobs are gone, there is a further decrease in our resource use, and our economy is in the toilet. I guess if he doesn’t accomplish this–the EPA will…..

      @The_Ancient

      “Right or Wrong, the off shore area is owned by the Federal Government, and as such the Congress and Grated in the Executive Branch Authority as to how the Mineral Rights are utilized.”

      The government cannot own anything that is not for the benefit of each and every citizen. Remember, governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed.

      Consider a similar scenario in the time of our Founders:

      “Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our Brittish brethren.

      “We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence.

      “They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity.

      “We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.”

      You see, the King of Great Britain made the rules, and the Founders’ countrymen back in the “mother land” were fine with what the King was doing to the Colonists. The Founders’ countrymen gave power to the King – and yet it was seen as an overreach of power.

      And the reason what the King did was an overreach of power is because governments exist to serve each and every individual citizen of the country – not the other way around.

      And it’s the same with the off shore oil drilling. Though the government “owns” the deep water, the government owns it ON BEHALF OF each and every citizen, and for the purpose of the interests of reach and every citizen. And since the Obama Administration has violated that purpose by his pretended authority to ban productivity in deep waters, their legislations have no legitimate force.

      Drill anyway. The Obama Administration is pursuing the destruction of the American economy on purpose. They have abandoned their oath to the Constitution.

      Amen! Seems funny they can give millions of dollars to Mexico and Brazil to drill deeper in the same region, but have a moritorium on our own drilling! Ludicrous they’re building Global Nationalism, right under our noses and our elected officials are to dumb to see it! Impeach Obama, he and his Czars are trying to over throw our way of life, and rid us of our rights, and protections under the Constitution to further this Global Governance Agenda!!!!!!!
