Obama Administration Fights to Keep bin Laden Death Photos Secret

WASHINGTON (The Blaze/AP) — Public disclosure of graphic photos and video taken of Osama bin Laden after he was killed in May by U.S. commandos would damage national security and lead to attacks on American property and personnel, the Obama administration contends in court documents.

In a response late Monday to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group seeking the imagery, Justice Department attorneys said the CIA has located 52 photographs and video recordings. But they argued the images of the deceased bin Laden are classified and are being withheld from the public to avoid inciting violence against Americans overseas and compromising secret systems and techniques used by the CIA and the military.

The Justice Department has asked the court to dismiss Judicial Watch’s lawsuit because the records the group wants are “wholly exempt from disclosure,” according to the filing.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, accused the Obama administration of making a “political decision” to keep the bin Laden imagery secret. “We shouldn’t throw out our transparency laws because complying with them might offend terrorists,” Fitton said in a statement. “The historical record of Osama bin Laden’s death should be released to the American people as the law requires.”

The Associated Press has filed Freedom of Information Act requests to review a range of materials, such as contingency plans for bin Laden’s capture, reports on the performance of equipment during the May 1 assault on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, and copies of DNA tests confirming the al-Qaida leader’s identity. The AP also has asked for video and photographs taken from the mission, including photos made of bin Laden after he was killed.

The Obama administration refused AP’s request to quickly consider its request for the records. AP appealed the decision, arguing that unnecessary bureaucratic delays harm the public interest and allow anonymous U.S. officials to selectively leak details of the mission. Without expedited processing, requests for sensitive materials can be delayed for months and even years. The AP submitted its request to the Pentagon less than one day after bin Laden’s death.

In a declaration included in the documents, John Bennett, director of the CIA’s National Clandestine Service, said many of the photos and video recordings are “quite graphic, as they depict the fatal bullet wound to (bin Laden) and other similarly gruesome images of his corpse.” Images were taken of bin Laden’s body at the Abbottabad compound, where he was killed by a Navy SEAL team, and during his burial at sea from the USS Carl Vinson, Bennett said.

“The public release of the responsive records would provide terrorist groups and other entities hostile to the United States with information to create propaganda which, in turn, could be used to recruit, raise funds, inflame tensions, or rally support for causes and actions that reasonably could be expected to result in exceptionally grave damage to both the national defense and foreign relations of the United States,” Bennett wrote.

Navy Adm. William McRaven, the top officer at U.S. Special Operations Command, said in a separate declaration that releasing the imagery could put the special operations team that carried out the assault on bin Laden’s compound at risk by making them “more readily identifiable in the future.” Before his current assignment, McRaven led the Joint Special Operations Command, the organization in charge of the military specialized counterterrorism units.

    I just don’t get why some are in such a hurry to see blood & gore. Or to see the body of a declared enemy (why isn’t knowing he’s dead good enough?).

    It’s like some people want to parade the image of his dead body thru the streets like the heathens in Mogadishu or Homer’s Iliad. Or is it that some just want to insult & enrage our enemies so much that it incites those enemies to commit additional atrocities in a vain attempt at revenge.

    Let sleeping dogs lie for now. Govt. approved images will come out in a few years when those directly involved in the mission (as well as their families) are no longer are active targets of insane tensions & sentiments.

      B.S. How do you know pictures even exist? Why were members of the supposed Seal Team 6 that killed osama killed themselves? Who saw osama dead that’s talking about it? Answer: NO ONE!

      We haven’t seen anything but forgeries from obama as far as a birth certificate either, and the SSN he’s using is a fraud. He’s spent millions of dollars keeping every possible aspect of his past that can be hidden, hidden. Why? Well, logic would tell you it‘s BECAUSE THERE’S INCRIMINATING EVIDENCE THAT HE’S A FRAUD THERE! Just like the supposed osama death pics.

      Everything about obama is a damn fraud. He no more than killed OBL than the grandmother living next door to me did. OBL was killed almost ten years ago with a bunker busting bomb, just like they SAID he was.

      obama is a liar, a fraud, a usurper and a slimy damn POS illegally holding the office of President. He should be arrested, hand cuffed, drug from the White House, tried for high crimes and treason, convicted and jailed for the rest of his natural born life… and chances are once he’s kicked out of the White House, that’s exactly what will happen.

      Right there in your first paragraph you make the claim that some of the seals that killed Bin Laden were killed. This reveals that you only loosely follow the news. While there were a bunch of members of seal team six that died in that crash, NOT ONE of them was from the part of seal team six that was actually on the Bin Laden mission.

      Way to fall flat on your face right out of the gate. I’m supposed to trust any of your facts now?

      You fall flat on your face for thinking they would tell you if the brave men who passed in that helicopter were a part of the OBL operation. Think of this, those men died and their names were released to the public. Now if they said they were a part of that operation do you think their families would be safe? I think when it comes to Special Ops, the troops and their families should be protected from every potential risk. With that said what is the point of hiding the photos of a body? I believe we saw the hanging of Saddam, even though it could have created an uproar in Iraq.

      Because knowing the medical conditions Bin Laden had it is almost impossible to live 10 years in perfect conditions much live in hiding. Was her really killed or did he die years ago..Is this ANOTHER Obama lie?? Was seal Team 6 murdered to keep them quiet?? Not to mention as the article states it is the LAW..       Well I say that obama’s picture and presence causes people extreme illness, nausea & vomiting, and a multitude of medical problems. Therefore, pictures AND the presence of obama MUST be banned for the protection of the American people, to avoid violence against Ameirican citizens and well as for national security. Let obama go where the pictures hidden and he can permanently stay hidden with them. If he was to do that, then I would be more than happy to let the pictures stay hidden as well.

      Are you serious? What makes you think that Osama Bin Laden hasn’t already been dead for years? Do you actually think that Barack Obama is telling the truth about this, after never telling the truth about anything else, ever? Perhaps you missed the shoot down of a chopper in Afghanistan that killed something like 22 of Seal Team 6. why do you think Seal Team 6 was killed off, so they could never tell the truth about Bin Laden. Ask yourself, why does it take two weeks to verify DNA of a known murder suspect, but the Navy did it in less than 24 hours on a ship in the middle of nowhere, and where did they get a sample of Bin Laden’s DNA in the first place to match it with? The entire episode is fishy at best. No, just knowing the Bin Laden is dead is not enough! I believe the Bin Laden story about as much as I believe the Obama birth certificate is authentic, I DON’T!!!

      it takes time to use publisher and photoshop to make sure he does not have to go through the whole birth certificate layering problem they had a while back. The seal team that was said to take out the bad guy, was set up to fail. if they talk they go down, if the truth comes out they go down. those that were killed, only a few people actually know who was on that team. I was actually on board until i heard they dumped the body at sea to follow Islamic law. Show me one time that has been done with the thousands we have killed? come on just name one other time?

    IMO and based upon intelligence regarding Osama bin Laden’s health back in 1999 to 2000 I think it is highly unlikely that he was even alive after 2002 or 2003. OBL had Marfan Syndrome as well as other issues.

    Geez Louise,,,,,,,,,,,,,,if they DID release the photos you guys would call it a blatant publicity stunt and one showing no taste or sense of restraint whatsoever. Instead because they haven’t released them people say “it didn’t even happen”. Hilarious.

    The raid was a great success for our military, and for our country. Regardless of party or political persuasion nearly 100% of Americans were very proud of our military and our President that day. It came after an unprecedented effort by some very smart people working endless hours (and a few years after Bush actually **closed** the CIA office looking for Bin Laden, but I digress). The mechanics of the intelligence gathering and the actual raid itself are fascinating to read about, and as it is now al Qaeda is on the ropes. Handling the body the way they did put the story as quietly to bed as could be hoped for. Job well done.

    There’s no need to show the photos and inflame the radicals in the Muslim world. No need at all.

      We all had to watch people jumping to their death on 9/11 over and over for weeks. We watched as the towers fell knowing that at that instant thousands of people were being crushed to death. We were shown pictures of bodies and body parts. So I ask, whats so horrific about seeing A picture of Osama bin laden’s body? I‘m quite sure there’s at least one picture of him that could be released that wouldn’t “compromise secret systems and techniques used by the CIA and the military”. I’m sure our enemies know we have “bullets” and have already developed a launch-delivery system called “guns”.

      I never said they were. Nor are Muslims.

      Yet, there is a tiny (I mean tiny) fraction of people in each religion that want to get one going. You hear references to it all the time —on both sides— and it’s despicable and sad. People here stir the pot all the time, and you know it.

      The same as most Christians, most Muslims are peace-loving people who want to be left alone by their governments to worship and practice as they see fit.

      I am no ignorant to the evils of radical Islam, and am proud of our work to defend ourselves as necessary.

    The public has a right to see OBL’s brains against a wall, and the blood streaming from his abdomen. The American public has the right to see this guy with half his skull blown off. Personally I think we should release photos to the internet of any terrorist we kill, brains, blood, heads blown apart, gaping abdominal wounds, whatever, even if you can’t tell their ethnicity (that’s what captions are for).

    In the good old day humans stuck the severed heads of their enemies on posts. That made their enemies fearful they believed. In the age of the internet, we should do the same, except with high resolution photographs. Thanks to the advance of technology, we no longer need to present dead enemy heads on posts, or crucified on crosses. Advanced as we are as a civilization, we can now show photographs (suitable for framing in 8 X 12) of our enemies with only half their heads remaining, eyes glazed (if they still have eyes) as well as the tissue from the other half blown against a wall in a single well framed photograph!

    I’m awed when I think about how far we, as a species have advanced!

      This administration had no problems releasing photos of Gitmo and Abu Ghraib even when they were warned of possible consequences of muslim backlash. If this administration thinks that releasing the photos during the 2012 election will give them a boost, they will be posted faster than a modified AK-47 running across the border under the DoJ lead by AG Holder.

    tough call, I agree with the Obama regime on very little, but I think that releasing the photos at this time is unnecessarily inciteful. Maybe in 10 yrs or so, but not now. All, including Al Queda have confirmed he is dead. There really isn’t a good reason to release the photos other than morbid curiosity, and it will incite those who want to kill us
