Obama Administration Official Urges Cable Providers to Carry Al-Jazeera

As unrest erupted in Egypt, the Al-Jazeera network gained international fans in the United States for its live streaming coverage from Cairo. But while many Americans tuned-in to the Al-Jazeera broadcasts, many media watchdogs warned against rewarding the controversial network with viewership.
Fox News‘ Bill O’Reilly recently hosted a heated discussion on whether Al-Jazeera should be “praised” for its coverage, which often includes anti-American and anti-Semitic rhetoric:

It comes as somewhat of a shock, then, to see an official of the Obama administration openly encouraging American cable companies to carry Al-Jazeera. But Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Juliette Kayyem pleaded in a Boston Globe op-ed Monday, “Let us see Al-Jazeera.”
For the past few weeks, a parallel plot line to the revolutions in the Arab world has been playing out in the media. With rare exceptions, the largest American cable and satellite providers simply do not provide viewers access to Al Jazeera English, the cousin to the powerful Qatar-based world news network. AJE has launched a full-fledged campaign – including advertisements quoting, of all people, major US news figures – to convince cable carriers to open their programming. But most have declined: Burlington, Vt., is the closest city to Boston where viewers can see the network on television.
AJE’s battle with the cable carriers is major news in the Middle East. Not carrying the network sends a message to the Arab world about America’s willingness to accept information, unfiltered, from the very region we spend so much time talking about. These television wars began not in Tunisia or Egypt, but in Iraq.
In the midst of the Iraq war, in 2004, the Bush administration devised a $500 million station named Alhurra, roughly (and ironically) translated from the word “the free one’’ in Arabic. Created on the false assumption that the Arab world had little access to information from the outside world, the goal was to provide a different worldview than Arab outlets such as Al Arabiya and Al Jazeera offered, or, as President Bush announced in his State of the Union that year, “to cut through the barriers of hateful propaganda, a new television service will begin providing reliable news and information across the region.’’ (Then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld used to verbally accost Al Jazeera’s war coverage as “vicious, inaccurate, and inexcusable.’’)
Nine days after President Obama took office in 2009, he sat down to an interview with Al Arabiya, the Saudi television network, to signal a new relationship with the Arab world while snubbing Alhurra. For the Arab world, what he said was almost secondary to where he chose to say it.
Kayyem goes on to suggest that in failing to carry Al-Jazeera’s programming, American cable companies are snubbing the Arab world a la the Bush administration.
In contrast, Kayyem praises Al-Jazeera for “masterfully” covering the events in Tunisia and Egypt.
It may be that, given AJE’s relationship wth the Bush administration, cable providers fear it is merely anti-American propaganda. But the remarkable aspect of AJE is how little its coverage of the Egyptian crisis has been about the United States.
Kayyem admits that “if I watched long enough,” Al-Jazeera’s clear biases and anti-Semitic rhetoric would be more obvious. “But that basically describes my relationship with most cable news hosts,” she says, “yet there they are, night after night.”
James Zogby, in his book “Arab Voices,’’ highlights how American companies such as Cisco, Starbucks, and ExxonMobil have made important contributions to public diplomacy by shaping and promoting engagement in the Arab world. US cable companies ought to do the same by bringing a major player in the Arab world to American audiences.
The events in Egypt, culminating in President Mubarak’s exit, are the beginning of an unpredictable narrative in the Middle East. American news outlets will return home. But, the story continues throughout the region. If only we could tune in live.

That said it doesn’t make them any different to most of the media out there right now. But censoring them in a free society like the US makes me even more uncomfortable. If Americans can’t see through their BS then maybe all the progressives and liberals are right, we are too stupid to make up our own minds and take control of our own lives and future. Something that really bothers me is the crap the libs are trying to pedal about how this will make the “Arab street feel” if we don’t allow AJE on our cable systems. Posted on February 14, 2011 at 10:50pmAl Jazeera is probably the best cable news station on the planet, so I don’t understand the fear of them. They report NEWS not OPINION and give viewers an honest look at events around the world, not only the Middle East.
I understand that for Fox viewers, the idea of a real news station is terrifying because it may force you to think. It is not a politically motivated station and their reporting is honest, factual and unbiased. I realize that Fox viewers are so used to having people tell them what to think, and that Fox loyalists are content to be ignorant to the world around them , preferring to fall for Beck’s caliphate conspiracy theories.
Maybe, just maybe, if you had the opportunity to view Al Jazeera, you would realize that the people in the Middle East (including Muslims) are human and no different from you or me. If they appeared human, it would be harder for you to hold such blind hatred against them. And, we certainly don’t want you to stop hating everyone who looks/thinks/believes different that you. I truly pity you.

However, I do believe that there comes a point when another viewpoint takes on a more sinister motive by actually spreading an agenda rather than report on facts with a simple built in bias. Example…..Nazi’s would have produced a lot of “viewpoints” on all kinds of issues that we could say is just another view point or we could say this stuff is evil with a more subversive agenda then to report on facts but to propagandize masses of people (I’m not trying to compare Nazi to Al Jazeera). Why is it so hard to believe the truth when it is something we dont want it to be? Those of you that think this conflict is impossible are (will be) dead wrong!
The gov’t will shut down. The bond market will explode and the banks will follow suit. Unions, pensioners and gov’t supported poor will not be getting checks by the end of the month of march! Do you think they will just complain about it, NO!! They will be hungry and angry and easily manipulated into violent activities on behalf of anyone that will offer them the chance to survive the chaos! There are those that would benefit from conflict and chaos because they (BHO, Soros and his montage of manipulated minions) are counting on it being the fire in their forge to reshape the world closer to their hearts desire. To hell with the rest of us. We are the same as **** in their reforging process. Unless they are stopped, they will achieve their goals. Their machine is very large and complicated. If it were to loose a few cogs it can compensate. You have to remain vigilant! You can strike the head of the snake from its body but it will still bite you if you stick your hand in its mouth. There are many that will willingly sacrifice themselves for their beliefs, some will be heros and some will be butchers. The only difference at that point is good and evil. If you don’t choose a side you will be fodder to both.
I choose the God given rights of life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness, as would all American Patriots. Are you prepared to back up your word with your life? Are you prepared to do what it takes to survive? Are you even prepared to take care of yourself and the ones you care about if the crap hits the fan? I am a veteran and have an idea of how horribly things go wrong when the government gets involved then changes its mind and deserts its obligations because of political agenda. You have to remember that the people that have the power will serve their own self interests first and foremost. Do not let them devide us into cons and libs, black and white and red and brown. We must stand as one! or we will fall as a devided people.
I am not a doom and gloom guy. I have done my research to exhaustion and disgust. I take no mans word for representation of the truth unless I know it to be true. I believe there is great turmoil ahead but we will have a gorious future once we shed the evil skin that has grown over our once great society. out of the ashes will rise the purified pheonix bringing with it new level of understanding and respect for life.
