Obama Administration Opposes D Day Prayer at WWII Memorial

Conservatives and Republican lawmakers are furious after the Obama administration announced its objection to adding President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s D-Day prayer to the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The objection was reportedly raised during a congressional hearing on Republican Congressman Bill Johnson’s bill – the “World War II Memorial Prayer Act of 2011.”

“It is unconscionable that the Obama administration would stand in the way of honoring our nation’s distinguished World War II veterans,” Johnson said. “President Roosevelt’s prayer gave solace, comfort and strength to our nation and our brave warriors as we fought against tyranny and oppression.”

Roosevelt’s prayer asked God to give the allied troops courage and faith, saying: “With thy blessing we shall prevail over the unholy forces of our enemy.”

Fox News adds that Robert Abbey, the director of the Bureau of Land Management, said any plaque or inscription bearing the prayer would “dilute” the “elegant” memorial’s core message and therefore “should not be altered.“ Does Abbey mean to say that the memorial would no longer appear elegant if it contained a reference to ”God?” It appears so:

“It is not a judgment as to the merit of this new commemoration, simply that altering the Memorial in this way, as proposed in HR 2070, will necessarily dilute this elegant memorial’s central message and its ability to clearly convey that message to move, educate, and inspire its many visitors,” Abbey said in written testimony.

Abbey explained to lawmakers that altering the memorial would be contrary to the Commemorative Works Act — a law that prohibits “encroachment by a new commemoration on a existing one.” It also respects the design of the “completed work of civic art without alteration or addition of new elements.”

“For there to be objections to demonstrating a faith in God at critical points in our nation’s history – particularly D-Day – boggles my mind,” Johnson said. “I was very surprised they were going to object.”

Meanwhile, Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council said he is not surprised by the objections.

“This is further evidence that the administration has created an environment that is hostile towards American history – but in particular towards Christianity,” Perkins told Fox News. “I hope America wakes up and realizes what this administration is doing to this country and how they want to radically and fundamentally change America.”

      I also herd today on Rush that the obama admin. also forced the Air Force Academy football team to remove a christian based fundraiser becasue of the complaints of 2 muslim families some how associated with the team. I guess this christian based fund helped hundreds of low income families and children. Now gone thanks to our muslim president.

      It appears FDR’s Prayer should have been included in the first place when the memorial was designed, built and dedicated. The policy referenced above will also serve to protect existing monuments from having references to God, Christianity and the like removed when the whims of those in power are so inclined. It is too late. I don’t want a prayer included now if it means that all the other monuments and Commemorative works will be subject to revision by those with absolutely no faith who may or may not take office in the future.

      When Clinton should have been impeached out of office the Senate didn’t support the motion because the argument had transitioned to a morality issue when it should have been focused on the fact that the Commander in Chief lied under oath and attempted to thwart the very system he was constitutionally bound to uphold.

      We have to keep our eye on the ball here folks, Obama’s policies aimed at destroying or replacing free market capatilism should be our only focus. Don’t get diverted by whether or not his support is behind a prayer and what that could possibly imply about his core beliefs as a “Christian.” That point is immaterial and a mere blip on the screen compared to the big picture.

      The OBAMA administration’s definition of “elegance” = stripped of any reference to God, especially the God of the Bible, or belief in His assistance or intervention on America’s behalf, specifically when it comes to asking for God to help overcome the enemies of America on the field of battle.

      I suppose they would also view the Psalms of David asking for God’s help in battle as “lacking elegance”.

      In which case I WANT A PRESIDENT WHO IS NOT ELEGANT. If that’s the word game they want to play.

      I can’t quote it word for word, but in the health care bill, there’s a section that states if you want a religious objection to providing health care (to opt out)…you can only hire those in your particular religion (Baptists can’t hire Catholics, or even Methodists) to work in your church and YOU CAN’T HELP ANYONE OUTSIDE OF YOUR RELIGION, which means the Catholic charities will have to start asking people who come to their food pantries if they are Catholic. Of course, this doesn’t matter to muslims, because they aren’t allowed to have interactin with infidels.

      Lighten up. The Vietnam Memorial is IMO the most moving sight in DC. Sorry if the sarcasm struck a nerve. But it strikes a nerve with me when somebody proposes senselessly etching new things – prayer or not – into monuments that have stood perfectly fine on their own for years and years. And then claim it’s a conspiracy against Christians when somebody, who was certainly not Obama, sensibly says “no.” Why not chisel prayers on every monument there?

      Wishful thinking but this president and muslim will not be thrown out of office by mere votes. He is already ramping up his re-election through riots in the streets. By next year we will already be in full blown national crisis. That means no election period. What it will mean is martial law and a president occupying office indefinitely. The fundamental change is upon us and the hands of time will not be turned back. He is too big to fail and along with the multiculture dream he represents. It would be a blow to the egos of millions of black youth and others to see him ripped from that office by a populist of Whites. Just for national security issues alone that cannot be allowed to happen. I don’t agree with it, thats just how I see the near future unfolding, after that is anybodys guess.

      I tend to agree with ChiefGeorge . . . As much as I have found optimism in medicine (and prayer) works in medicine, I am beginning to believe that the direction in which our country is headed is NOT approaching the cliff, but in fact OVER the cliff. We are just arguing about when we will hit bottom. Hopefully, prayer (Oh I forgot that this is frowned upon if not forbidden in more and more places across this land of ours) will work. Folks, the time may swiftly approach when we may have to stand up and perhaps give our life for our religious belief and our belief in Liberty. As my Dad (WWII), GrandDad (WWI) Great GrandDad (CW + TXRng), GreatGreat GrandDad (1812), and GreatGreatGreat GrandDad (US Revolutionary War) passed down to me (RVN + Desert Storm) and my Brother (RVN KIA): Some things are just worth dying for – the top two are LIBERTY and FREEDOM OF RELIGION.       FDR’s prayer is beautiful and would be a wonderful addition to the memorial. I stay at peace knowing that the Lord Jesus Christ controls history and reigns sovereignly, and everything that happens is happening for a reason on His perfect time clock. If Greece falls, look for a one world order to emerge.

    It’s obvious that extensive planning went into the vision, design and construction of this amazing monument. This type of addition could open the door to future revisions of who knows what type.

    As a Christian, I don’t see a problem with leaving the monument as is.

      why didn’t they include the prayer then?
      Wasn’t FDR a progressive anyway?
      This is what congress works on now
      Can’t slash the deficit, can’t agree on anything,

    My father a WWII Pacific combat vet was always upset that a portion of FDR’s speech before congress was omitted at the memorial. The actual phrase was “With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph. So help us God.” During the war that was repeated often on the thoughts of the soldiers. It is with a heavy heart that I must say that it is fortunate that he passed from this world to rejoin him comrades in January of this year. This would break his heart! He flew the flag everyday of his life after he returned from the war. It is a shame that country that fought for has also left world.

    That generation gave more than any other in recent history. That prayer is a part of the entire experience and should be accepted without question. Those of us who donated funds to the construction of that memorial should have the ultimate say, not Obummer.

    It‘s strange how much Obama believes in Roosevelt’s approach to the solution to one problem and not the other. Roosevelt’s policies in regards to the depression (the same as Obama) didn’t work, his policy with regard to the Japs and Germans did? Go Figger?

    OBbama is not even waiting to see if the American people object to correctly quoting an American Citizen, he is taking it upon himself to object. I suppose that he won’t mind is someone misquotes him?

    It once again appears Obama‘s marxist regime is pushing God further away from this country’s history. He has disdain for Christianity, no matter what references he makes about his own Christianity. He is not a Christian. I wish he would leave the country and take all his marxist revolutionaries with him. Surely there are countries they could live in, like Russia. They already have all this marxist stuff in place.

      Thank you. I”m not practicing myself, but I googled the thing, and it’s beautiful. It has historical significance at a time of serious peril, not only for our servicemen but the entire world.

      I think that it’s absolutely appropriate and dilutes nothing. It’s the context of that time and space.

      Personally, I hate historical dilution by politically correct partisans of the present. THAT is far more offensive to me. Reminds me of the Taliban blowing up ancient Buddhist statues.
