Obama Administration Wants Government to Be Your ‘Federal Family’

In a creative use of language, the government may be trying to, perhaps not so subtly, convince you of its well-meaning intentions. In a day and age where the term “federal government” evokes feelings of disillusionment, and for some, even disgust, the Obama administration is opting for the softer, and evidently preferable term “federal family.”

But does “federal family” elicit warm, familial feelings, or does it instead conjure images of Big Brother and 1984?

The Palm Beach Post notes that in the flurry of official communications surrounding the onset and aftermath of Hurricane Irene, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) repeatedly used the phrase “federal family” when describing the Obama administration’s response to the storm.

The term wasn’t coined by the Obama administration, but it certainly seems to have taken it to a whole other level.

While the administrations of both Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush peppered the odd congressional testimony or statement with the euphemism (a Google search reveals the phrase appeared 10 times on FEMA’s website during the Bush years), since Obama took office, “federal family” has turned up some 118 times on fema.gov, 50 instances of which include Irene-related references.

“Under the direction of President Obama and Secretary Janet Napolitano, the entire federal family is leaning forward to support our state, tribal and territorial partners along the East Coast,” a FEMA news release stated the Friday prior to Irene’s arrival.

“’Government’ is such a dirty word right now,” Florida State University communication professor Davis Houck told the Post. “Part of what the federal government does and any elected official does is change the terms of the language game into terms that are favorable to them.”

In another instance during Hurricane Irene, the Obama administration claimed it was “committed to bringing all of the resources of the federal family to bear.”

“That one is so blatantly obvious that I think people’s rhetorical radar is going to go off,” Houck said.

The Sydney Morning Herald adds that some believe a disaster is a golden opportunity to communicate how government can help people:

The University of Pennsylvania political communications professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson, said: ”People are performing a family-like function in a … crisis.”

But the message only worked, she said, if it was reinforced by images of federal workers managing the aftermath – in other words, succeeding.

”The question is, ‘Are we a dysfunctional family?’ ” she said.

Indeed.

      Let me see, do what we tell you to do and no one get’s hurt, well i’ve got news for them many people i know will be getting hurt then because we stand on our own two feet and don;t need nor do we want the help or guidance from any department in the federal government. I didn’t live this long nor get this far in life living off the hand outs from this government. That’s the problem with the young people in this country they always expect someone to do it for them, give them a hand out or worse save them when there’s trouble. I came from a generation were we had to take care of our selfs the only people we DID count on other then our selfs were our family members, friends and the church but NEVER the government.The progressives need to make the people totally dependent on the government for everything they need in order for their plan to work and that plan is the total control of the American population. Before the mid 1960′s when people needed help they would turn to the church but starting with Johnson they started working to turn people away from the church to depend more on the government for their needs. Now we have more social handout programs then anytime before in this nations history. These programs have become so large that along with S.S. they now total 55% of our budget and that is going to lead to the collapse of our country, that is the REAL end goal of their plan,TOTAL CONTROL of America.

      Huh? The topic of this post is two words: “federal family?” Is anyone in the North East complaing about the support they’ve recieved from FEMA? No, of course not. If you hear complaints they‘ll be that FEMA isn’t doing enough fast enough.

      FEMA’s reputation was tarnished with their incompetent to Katrina (great job Brownie, now go away), but under President Obama. FEMA has responded in an exemplary way. Lives were saved, and recontruction is underway.

      Yeah, sure, two words. Big Brother. Those in the North East are happy for the support FEMA has provided. They’re not there to set up concentration camps for conservatives as this website would have you believe. This is just an example of American taking care of its own.

      You can try to make something bad out of it, a New World Order, if you want. But you’re wrong. This is America, people, humans helping people cope with a natural distaster. These action are at the core of who we are as country.

      Go ahead and try to make something evil out of the US government standing up and helpping the average American.

      FEMA and the DHS are one in the same?.When did this happen? Or does the DHS now decide who gets help? What if it’s a Republican State, does it get FEMA’s help or not. My question always has been If we have the FBI why do we need DHS? And if the FBI is now to be an intelligence gathering organization who will be the enforcement? Do they give up their guns and no longer in the field? Is there another enforcement arm we don’t know about. Heaven forbid if it’s the UN, the way it’s going maybe.

      Americans helping Americans? Maybe with the federal gun (IRS) held to their head! How about locals helping locals and charities helping out before our federal overlords? The federal government wasn’t created for these activities, they were created for unified protection from invading forces. We (the states) never agreed to the Feds taking this kind of role in our lives. The lunatic lobs starting mixing words and the ‘vacant minded’ public allowed it to happen. If the public had half a brain and would focus it on critical thinking they wouldn’t believe the constant lies being told.       The term “federal family” illustrates what is at the root of the problem in this country. The government is not family. It is the “SERVANT” of the people. We have gone so far astray from what our constitutional republic was set up as. What is happening now is what our founders tried to prevent from happening – the government telling the people what to do, telling them what is best for them – instead of the people telling the government what to do through their representatives. The “federal family” is slowly insinuating itself into our lives more and more resulting in our precious freedoms being taken away. Sickening and tragic for a nation that was a beacon of true freedom. Hopefully, we will be once again. Only 5% of all the people that have ever lived have experienced true freedom – and it is taken for granted. What a tragedy.

      On a related point, I’ll bet the 78,000 Americans on Batan probably talked tough too until the Japs cut off the supply lines, encircled them and took them all prisoner. I talk tough too, but when the legislations come rapid fire at 2:00 am on a Saturday morning or Christmas Eve, when no one is paying attention, ones that will enable the domestic enemy to take your stuff, disarm you, and make it illegal for you to grow, make, borrow or trade anything, we will all have to make the choice of martyrdom or surrender. The difference here is that it won’t be a foriegn enemy, but a domestic one- you know- one of the two kinds mentioned in swearing to protect America from in an oath of office. When that day comes, we will be divided and conquered. If you get 2 shots off, you’ll probably be lucky. I‘ll bet that we’ll all die with our ammo cans full, barrels clean and oiled, with tears crusted on our sad faces as we line up on one of two lines, one leading to the train stations and the death camps, one leading to the chipping line where you will leave with a cookie and a balloon and a promise of peace and safety. Again, for all the other people like me who talk a tough game, let’s see what happens when the police come and knock at your door for your guns. I’ll bet less than one in a hundred of us will actually fire our weapons against the traitors. Most of us cannot count on our neighbors to be our allies. We cannot band together in militias as it is now!

      Wow US CITIZEN, I see that you’re against the federal government stepping in (or forcing themselves in in your opinion) to save American lives and help communities rebuild after natural disasters.

      Here’s my opinion of your opinion. After Katrina, you’d have left people to die (because neither the city state couldn’t help them), and left the dead to rot in the streets because the city or state didn’t have the resources to remove and bury them. You seem to believe that the federal government has nresponsibilityty to protect American citizens or promote the general welfare.

      I guess you suppose that after Katrina blew through that the flooded churches and their parishioners are going to go out and, somehow, rescue people and afterward go out and collect the corpses and bury them. And then, with their leftover money help them rebuild their businesses. That’s an interesting opinion.

      We are one country and we look after our own, that’s my opinion. You’ve obviously have never been in a disaster, one where local authority collapses and cannot carry out rescues let alone anything else.

      I am happy for my taxes to go to help Americans who need help.

      Tell that to the people still trying to recover from the flooding in the Midwest (big sis says we may need to take some of the money from old disasters to handle Irene…) The drought and fires in TX and those dealing with the unnatural disaster of the flood of illegals which has made the area south of Phoenix a government posted no-mans-land! Add the incompetency of Fast & Furious, and it’s sister disasterous gunrunning programs, and it’s awesome that the government actually has gotten something right in helping the people suffering (yes I do realize it is actual suffering) from the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irene!

      I have a family and it is an American Christian Family. I have never nor will I ever want a FEDERAL FAMILY. I would be willing to bet no Republican would want a Federal Family. Only Liberals think of the Government as family. When someone gives you an “Allowance” and “Furnishes” you shelter and
      “Takes care of your children” by paying for what they eat and telling them what they can or cannot eat I guess in fact they ARE their Family. Federal Family my arse. I don’t want a federal anything except to get out of my business and out of my life.

      Yes, and No.

      Lets start with yes, because I think it is cheesy, and don’t think the government should be telling me what I am, or should be.

      No because Christians do not (if they sincerely mean Christian, and not big brother hiding behind the word) hold any authority over me. They do not pass laws, and can not legally do whatever they want to, just because they do not like my views.

      See here is the problem in my opinion….We have given the federal government the power to portray who we are to the world. We have given it a personality, we dress it up with big pay checks and titles. The men and women in office are treated like celebrities, and royalty. DO any of them really deserve any of it? I don’t think so, I don’t think they should be treated any more special than any technician that keeps a machine running, and maintained.

      The Government should not have a personality, the government should just govern the works of the government period. It is not a person. Just keep the citizens safe, make sure people are not harming one another (physical, and property harm. None of that harmed feelings BS), make sure other countries do not harm us, make sure that the constitution is being upheld, and make sure that the legal system is in order….

      @DB321: You may be right! And martial law is the only way to scare the sheep into remaining in their homes, glued to the govenrment sanctoned information releases on TV. There may very well be a false flag event placed, much like 9-11 or worse, probably involving some sort of Nuke, Bio, Chem scare or event, but resulting in the suspension of the constitution, already as irrelevant as Linus’ security blanket, and a suspension of the elections. If I was a bookie, I’d give 3:1 odds that there will be no election next year. I’d put BIG money down on those odds too. It sure has a better chance of paying off than wothless treasury bonds! I will be shocked if there is a fair election or any election at all. The beast smells blood in the water. From the NWO’s perspective, I‘ll bet that It’s time to end the game, as all the pieces are in place. There will be no election. Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, but instead watch the candidates dance and entertain for your distraction.

      The movie years ago “Big Brother is watching” seemed unbelievable, but it’s happening if we let it.
      Obama is letting, perhaps encouraging the RACE BAITING thingie all the black congressmen/women are pulling the last year or two.
      They think we’re gonna roll over & play dead with their games. People, don’t trust ANYONE in Washington D.C. any more. They are wicked, untrustworthy, liars, cheats, corrupt beyond words and we must remove them from our Country’s offices.

      They have a huge hold on this Country already with all the racist slurs against the non-black community. They think this will cause us to fold. I‘m praying it comes back and bite’s the hell out of them, just like Maxine Waters wants the Tea Party to go to Hell,and that Andre thinks we want to lynch them all. What fools these black representatives are, mostly fooling their own people keeping them in slavery by taking away all their incentive to become just what we see in the news & on TV.

      No pride in themselves, no interest in becoming better people, kids without fathers, live on welfare
      because they don’t know they can do better for themselves with encouragement, which their representatives don’t give because they want them beholding as voters, not happy normal humans.

      Sorry, Progslayer, we won’t be rounded up for reeducation. Do you remember your history of the Nazi invasion of Serbia? That’s what will happen. I’m sure everyone who posts here has an acitve place on the round-up roster, as we are as easily noticed by our IP addresses as if we stood naked in church. People like us will be hung publicly for all the townsfolk to marvel at, with the local cops pulling on our legs making sure our necks are good and broken. After all, they will be the ones ordered to do the initial weapons sweeps. Reeducation is for the moderate and the Republican who can be swayed by cultural whim.
