Obama Appoints ‘Responsibility to Protect’ Champion Samantha Power to Chair Genocide Panel

Yesterday, President Barack Obama spoke at the U.S. Holocaust Museum, where he praised his administration for saving “countless lives” and pledged endless support for Israel. Among his announcements, the president highlighted his new Atrocities Prevention Board, an initiative aimed at preventing genocide and related social ills. What’s most interesting about the bold proposal, though, is the individual who will chair the board — Samantha Power.

Why is she noteworthy, you ask? To begin, Power has a complicated history with the Obama camp and has been accused, in the past, of making disparaging remarks about Israel. The Chicago Sun-Times has more about Power and her involvement in the new-found genocide prevention board:

Samantha Power — who won a Pulitizer Prize for her book on genocide and now advises the Obama administration on the subject–will chair President Barack Obama’s new Atrocities Prevention Board, which gets down to work Monday as Obama delivers a speech at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum. [...]

The Obama White House efforts to address genocide is headed by Samantha Power, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights. Power won a Pulitizer Prize for her book, “A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide”and worked briefly for Obama when he was a U.S. senator from Illinois.

You may also remember Power from her role in Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign (she resigned after calling Hillary Clinton a “monster”). She’s also the wife of Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs’ Administrator Cass Sunstein (of “Nudge” fame).

Glenn Beck, too, has discussed her in detail. In March 2011, he covered Power on his radio show and a subsequent article on GlennBeck.com recapped the host’s stance:

For anyone who thinks that Samantha Power is just some low level cog in the Washington machine, the New York Times just did a nice profile on her role in the current administration. It turns out that Mrs. Cass Sunstein is probably the most dangerous woman in America, after all. [...]

“Now from her perch on the national Security Council, she is in a position to make the case for the commander in chief and to watch him translate her ideas into action. She’s clearly the foremost voice for human rights with in the White House, says Kenneth Ross. She has Obama’s ear. The Irish‑born Miss Power…functions as kind of an institutional memory bank on genocide,” [Beck said].

“So we have Cass Sunstein’s wife advising on the Responsibility to Protect,” Glenn said “If you’re in the circle of George Soros, she was a queen. George Soros immediately funded a group to push the Responsibility to Protect.”

“[UN official Richard Falk] has been pushing for the right to protect or the Responsibility to Protect to be used against Israel and they’ve been trying this now for the last couple of years, and that’s what this is really all about, period. This is about going after Israel,” Glenn said. [Emphasis added]

Considering this information and her past comments about Israel, The Lid blog wonders if Power will use her position on the Atrocities Prevention Board “as a tool to de-legitimize Israel.” The blog notes that, in 2002, Power sat down with Harry Kreisler, the director of the Institute for International Studies at Berkeley. Kreisler asked her the following:

“Let me give you a thought experiment here, and it is the following: without addressing the Palestine – Israel problem, let’s say you were an advisor to the President of the United States, how would you respond to current events there? Would you advise him to put a structure in place to monitor that situation, at least if one party or another [starts] looking like they might be moving toward genocide?”

Power’s response, in the eyes of those who support Israel, was problematic, as she claimed support for “external intervention” in the Israeli-Palestinian dilemma and said that it’s important to consider the “lesser evils” associated with getting involved in alleviating the issue. She also, at one point in her commentary, claimed that Middle Eastern leaders — including Israel, it seems — are “destroying the lives of their own people.” Here is a portion of her response, word-for-word:

“What we need is a willingness to actually put something on the line…and putting something on the line might mean alienating a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import. It may more crucially mean…investing literally billions of dollars not in servicing Israeli military, but actually investing in the new state of Palestine.

In investing billions of dollars it would probably take also to support, I think, what would to be, I think, a mammoth protection force…a meaningful military presence because it seems to me at this stage — and this is true of actual genocides as well and not just major human rights abuses which we’re seeing there — but is that you have to go in as if you’re serious. You have to put something on the line and unfortunately the position of a solution on unwilling parties is dreadful, it’s a terrible thing to do its fundamentally undemocratic.”

The Lid summarizes the tenets held within her words as follows:

  • “Alienate” the American Jewish community, and indeed all Americans, such as evangelical Christians, who support the state of Israel, because Israeli leaders are “destroying the lives of their own people.”
  • Pour billions of dollars of the taxpayers’ money into “the new state of Palestine”
  • Stage an American ground invasion of Israel and the Palestinian territories — what else can she mean by a “mammoth protection force” and a “military presence” that will be “imposed” by “external intervention”? — Interestingly she considers the exact same thing the height of arrogance and foolishness when it was done in Iraq.

Now, it is important to note that she differentiated “genocide” from the “major human rights abuses” that she believes — or at least believed back in 2002 — were occurring as a result of the conflict. Still, one cannot help but wonder if her views surrounding Israel and the Middle East will impact how she manages her position on Obama’s new-found panel.

Plus, with many on the left accusing Israel of genocidal intentions, fears and questions over how Power will use her position are certainly warranted.

      Exactly what, in real terms, results on the ground, impact on people’s lives is this “responsibility to protect” doctrine brought the world? Let’s look shall we: 1) Libya – mass rape and murder of black Libyans, destruction of the educated and western oriented classes, and return of women to the 7th century, 2) Egypt – the creation of a legitimate government more Islamic than the Iranians, religious police on the streets dispensing summary Koranic justice, serial rape, murder, and destruction of Egyptian Coptic Christian society, and a base for terror against Israel, 3) Syria – the systematic destruction of infrastructure and society of a relatively moderate and secular people (by Arab standards), slaughter of civilians and non-combatants, and most importantly the luring of the Russians into potential conflict with western proxy forces. Hmmm, the arithmetic does not seem to support the wisdom or effectiveness of this policy: misery, loss of life, and creation of national enemies. I contend that Ms. Power, like much of the current power structure, will be brought before the Bar to answer for the evil their Fascist plots’ have caused humanity. After much bloodshed and suffering, I suspect she and her bunch may face their crimes in a tribunal held in Springfield or Naperville vice Nuremberg. The crimes will be the same. The ideology, intentions, and defense will be familiar. How many millions must die this time? Perhaps we deserve what these people will deliver to

However, I find it curious, all this talk about what the Nazi’s did around the time Armenians around the world are remembering the Armenian Genocide committed by the turks. Through climate change and the Agenda 21 policy we will lose our ability to govern ourselves, while we are further taxed to build up other countries against the interest of our own! Many will starve because of the policies of this administration extension positions in the EPA, and their control over private lands. Now, the sticky fingered government even wants to consider taxing people’s retirement accounts. Do they really think they are not transparent in their mission to rule every aspect of our lives. But, it does seem as if a good 45 percent of the US public is onboard with being a social country. So, when the new health care bill starts deciding who lives and dies, we will suffer because we sit on our sofa’s and do not participate in the election cycle. Some say that they put in who they want anyway, regardless of our vote. Maybe so, but that’s one more right given up by not voting

    Who wants to bet that this panel will first put Israel under its scrutiny for genocide, while several Muslim countries continue to destroy their own populations?       I’m all for defending yourself and Israel certainly has a right to do so. There are legitimate reasons to be a little paranoid if you’re an Israeli citizen. But can you tell me how the illegal building of settlements on occupied land qualifies as “defending yourself”? Can you explain how the constant encroaching on disputed territories is supposed to put an end to this bloody conflict?

      I don’t know much about these illegal settlements or encroachments you speak of, and if that is what you think these “Palestinians” are crying about, you’re wrong. They do not want the West Bank or Gaza; they, along with the other Muslim countries, want the Jews dead and Israel to be no more. Since the Jews have been given Israel after WW2, the Muslims have launched wars and attacks on them with the express purpose of eliminating them. If it is solely about a land dispute, why do the Muslims fire rockets into towns, hospitals, and schools? Why do they stone cars containing women and childen? It is not about a land dispute.

      Took your suggestion, and it still doesn’t mean anything. The Road Map to Peace is based on the faulty assumption that the “Palestinians” have some claim to the land they are on. They don’t. Even if you give them the benefit of the doubt and they were misplaced when Israel became a state or in the war of ‘67, the Jewish people still have deeper ties to the land. You wanted me to read up on history, how far back should we go? When the Romans ruled, they ruled the Jews in Palestine. Go back to King David, and you will find he was a Jew who ruled the Jewish people. The Jews have hundreds of years to claim as the land being their own.
      Besides this, you need to listen to the leaders of the Palestinians. Hamas, last I knew, does not recognize Israel as a state and has a long term goal of eliminating Israel. “Our goal has never been peace. Peace is a means; the goal is Palestine, meaning the conquest of Israel. It has been said that we are negotiating for peace, but our goal has never been peace.” This was said by Kifah Radaydeh, a member of Fatah, part of the P.A. They do not want peace, nor do they want the Israelites for neighbors.

      That sad thing is, what’s Obama really got to be “hateful” or “spiteful” or “vengeful” about? He’s had nearly everything handed to him on a silver platter. He was a product of the system, essentially.

      overton window: And…sadly, the Jews in this Country will get in line and vote for this pre***tender-in-chief again. It baffles my mind that the Jews vote for the democrats over and over again, though it is the democrats that call for a two-stated Israel, and seem to be anti-Jew. Someone PLEASE explain to me why Jews vote for democrats. I would appreciate knowing why.
      This Samantha Power is a VERY DANGEROUS woman, but this administration is dangerous as well. The flower children of the 60′s and their proteges are now running the Country. While Americans were sleeping, these communist/progressive/marxist/socialist radicals were planning our demise. With the choice between Obama and Romney coming to a state near you, it doesn’t seem that there will be any relief from this scenario any time soon.

      johnpaulkuchtajr: Oh…it is my DAILY PRAYER. And…a whole lot of his cronies lined up behind him. But…don’t count on it if Romney is elected. He’s too weak. We had a far better chance of seeing that if Newt Gingrich had become President.
      Seeing I haven’t been online since Easter…anyone heard anything about Andrew Breitbart’s tapes about Obama coming out any time soon? Don’t try to tell me that Andrew died of a mere heart attack. His speech at CPAC and his death were just too coincidential. I don’t even have to use my imagination to consider that one!

      kickinback: Well, they know what failure to carry out their plans will mean. They will be exposed, and hopefully held accountable for their devilties. They are therefore playing for keeps. There are two things going on here. Satan is working his diabolical plans to destroy the last bastion of freedom in the world, and Obama and his minions are helping him. Good and evil are on display for all to see. We must begin to look at the natural and the supernatural side of these issues, or we will fail to correct them. I doubt that voting in a weak Romney will change much. He is like a double-minded man, and therefore Scripture tells us that we will not change anything. He waffles back and forth on issues. And…don’t forget that Romney is the man that gave us Romneycare/Obamacare. Oh, I forgot…we still don’t get it.
      The ONLY TWO men running for President on the Republican ticket that could have made the necessary changes to help America get back on its feet were Santorum and Gingrich. A sadly missed opportunity. Now we‘ll try to play the hand that’s being dealt us, thanks to the lamestream media, including Fox News. It will be like Bob Dole and John McCain all over again.
