Obama at Facebook Townhall: The Republicans Are the Radical Ones! Not Courageous!

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) — President Barack Obama declared Wednesday that congressional Republicans are pushing a radical plan to trim Medicare and Medicaid, ramping up the rhetoric before a friendly Facebook crowd at the headquarters of the popular social networking site.

Still, as Obama and Congress approach crucial decisions on spending and the national debt the president said he thinks a bipartisan accord is possible.

“I think it’s fair to say that their vision is radical,” Obama told a town hall gathering that included questions posed by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and sent in by site users.

“I don‘t think it’s particularly courageous,” he said of the GOP plan to convert Medicare to a voucher program and make big cuts to the federal-state Medicaid program for the poor.

“Nothing is easier than solving a problem on the backs of people who are poor, or people who are powerless, or don’t have lobbyists, or don’t have clout,” Obama said.

Republicans in Congress argue strenuously that Obama’s deficit prescription would accomplish far too little and relies on economically damaging tax increases.

The president said he would raise $1 trillion by returning income tax rates for high earners to the levels from Bill Clinton’s administration, when the economy prospered. That would force wealthy people like himself and Zuckerberg to pay “a little more in taxes,” he said.

“I’m cool with that,” Zuckerberg replied, as his employees laughed and applauded.

Other Democrats have called the GOP plan “radical,” but the president generally uses less pungent language. Despite the sharp tone on Wednesday, he said he believes his administration and Congress can agree on long-range plans to cut deficits by about $4 trillion over 10 years.

Republican lawmakers have used similar rhetoric in the past to describe Obama’s own spending proposals. In March, House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Obama’s refusal to accept GOP spending cuts would lead to a “radical” decrease in benefits for seniors.

Obama made his comments in a cozy environment – one with 19 million friends, in fact. He told Facebook employees and others watching online the nation must invest vigorously in education, clean energy and research that are vital to future jobs and a strong economy.

Obama’s own White House Facebook page is among the most popular anywhere. Some 19 million network users have electronically “liked” it.

Making the case for his deficit-cutting plans, Obama said that one way to trim health care costs could involve doctors sharing medical information on Facebook. Health care is one of the last major industries to rely heavily on paper records, he said, “because a large chunk of our provider system is not automated.”

Obama’s 2008 campaign used Facebook and other social networks to reach voters, volunteers and donors, especially among young adults. Such outlets will play even bigger roles in the 2012 campaign that’s already under way.

Obama, beginning a three-day Western tour pitching his budget plans and raising re-election cash, said trimming $4 trillion from the nation’s deficits sounds like a lot but can be done.

He will hold another session Thursday in Reno, Nev., with his message that his approach is more balanced and less painful than the rival House Republican plan.

Obama favors tax hikes on wealthy Americans, which GOP lawmakers oppose. He called for further cuts in the military and other agencies.

The Republican plan would cut tax rates for corporations and high earners, but also close some tax loopholes. It would achieve nearly $6 trillion in savings from spending cuts and overhauling Medicare and Medicaid.

To the average viewer, there was little to distinguish Obama’s Facebook town hall from previous question-and-answer sessions he has held with voters, other than the fact that the event could be viewed live by Facebook users.

Zuckerberg was the moderator, asking the first question himself, then calling on Facebook employees in the audience and reading the president questions submitted online.

The company’s youthful founder was a friendly referee, praising Obama’s education policies. Obama returned the favor, applauding Zuckerberg for the $100 million donation he made to help improve schools in Newark, N.J.

Asked by an employee what he would do differently as president, Obama looked forward, not back. He said he wants to control the debt and deficit, overhaul the immigration system and make the country less dependent on foreign oil by developing domestic and alternative sources of fuel.

He said the legislative battle over the 2010 health care law was long; it consumed more than a year. But Obama said he wasn’t sure it could have been done more quickly because the health care system is big and complicated.

The president acknowledged the pain that rising gasoline prices are causing.

“These gas prices are killing you right now,” he said, “and so this is the reason why I’ve said that it is so important for us to invest in new approaches to energy.”

Addressing immigration, Obama cast the issue in economic terms and said the long tradition of people coming from other countries with their ideas has helped make America great. He referred to Andy Grove, the Hungarian-born founder of computer chip maker Intel Corp., and said he wants more skilled immigrants like Grove to come and start businesses in the U.S., not in China or in France.

“If we’ve got smart people who want to come here and start businesses … why wouldn’t we want them to stay,” he said. “Why would we want to send them someplace else? Those are potential job creators. Those are job generators.”

    So the true “face” of Facebook comes clean. Both Zuckerberg and his homosexual side kick are very liberal and democrat. They are pretty much the shot in the arm that Obama needs in 2012. Remember, when social networking becomes an appendage for one particular group (the left) it will create a disperate environment and inequality. It will truley be “social”.

      @ ALWAYS_RIGHT Yeah, Today I was on facebook and started to make a comment about Harry Reid leaving out “UNDER GOD” from the pledge o allegiance and my entire computer shut down..NOT just the facebook site but the entire thing turned off..I guess they thought I’d be confused or something (I’m 76) and they probably thought I’d think that I had hit the wrong button or something..I got right back on and said what I had intended to say anyway..

    All I could see were the blank stares in the audience. A whole room full of useful idiots. Notice how he speaks almost exclusively with the youth at these events now? Adults ask to many question, and surprisingly they also want answers. Put all the little differences aside among conservatives, and be clear in the main issue with this man. He is a socialist/progressive, and the Republic does not fit into the world utopia that he dreams of. We can argue, and debate details all day, but conservatives must be focused on the main objective. Obama must not be allowed 4 more years. If we accomplish nothing else until 2012 then so be it, but we have to make sure that Obama is a one term WH occupant.

The citizens of this country elected a communist/marxist as the most powerful man in the world. It simply proves how asleep the majority of this country truly is.       In 2009 my daughter was awarded an all expenses paid and full course credit internship on presidential transition including attending the inauguration. She turned it down because Obama won. I told her she should go since it’s historic a minority won the presidency. She told me it wasn’t Obama winning that kept her from going. She didn’t want to spend three weeks in class with college kids who voted for Obama because “He’s hip and uses a Blackberry and Facebook.”

      exactly…I don‘t know who’s more dillusional…that mathews guy or the president…Glen is right about getting to the youth…thats how extreme people get their followings…people…educate your kids!…my son had a “discussion” with a libral guy from work…he asked whats wrong with HIllary…you can bet I “armed” him with a few things about old hillary…it takes a village…starting up move-on with soros…hillarycare…not to mention the items she went “along with” when bill was president..to name a few….unless we educate ourselves and our kids…we will not keep our republic!

      You know I spent 30 years as a DEMOCRAT.. I never fit in with people in my neighborhood ( I was born and raised in the BRIDGEPORT area of CHICAGO).. and I know WHY Obama is an example of the trash the left is.. and that would be ALL colors..       He is such a poor example of college education. “Radical, but not courageous.” How do you couple those two concepts? Does he mean that if the Republican plan were radical and COURAGEOUS he would support it? And then the crowd cheers, Obama says, “Ryan is sincere.”

      What the hell is this moron taking about? Does he have a point? Can’t this petty, university teacher’s aide make any kind of an argument? Constitutional lawyer?-Where’s his credentials-it another lie. And this is the “mind” MSNBC described as “Brilliant.” His performance is living proof of the declaration:

      I loved Steven Wynn’s comment on Cavuto pointing out the “conservative media’s” cowardice when analyzing any of Obama’s b-s proposals.

      “What you mean to say,” Mr. Wynn concluded, “is that he lies.”

      Wynn later admitted that he had voted for Obama. That is character. That is true humility. Obama is a classless imitation of an American man.

      The guy can’t talk his crap to adults anymore – they are on to him. Hopefully, young voters will wake up to what this guy is all about before it is too late. Why don’t young people see how their personal freedoms are being taken away one after the other. It boggles my mind – but then again you have to consider what teachers are filling their minds with nowadays. There should be a flag in every classroom, and the pledge allegience should be said at the start of every school day. Each day the students will be reminded that we may come in all shapes, colors, religions, and different countries, but when it comes to this country, we are ALL Americans. If a kid doesn’t want to say the pledge, fine don’t, but I bet most kids would like it. I know I did.

      No kidding. I can’t believe Obama has been to these tornado sites – 45 people I believe were killed. Bush would have been down the next day. How many days has it been. But you see, this is par for course for Obama because he has a serious moral void in that he does not value life. That is the main reason why I did not vote for him because I knew that this lack of value for life would be the basis for every decision he made. One of his first official acts as president was to lift the ban on partial birth abortions, and release thousands of embroyo’s for research. Than there was healthcare – the cheapening of life – death panels, rationing, etc. He claims to be a Christian, but does not defend Israel – our ally. He might want to read to the kids the story about the Emperor’s New Clothes. He may find he has a few things in common with the Emperor. .

      I read a poll today that said that around 80% of Americans are against cuts to medicare. We will never survive if people do not agree to these cuts. It is always “take away their stuff but leave mine alone”. What do you guys think about this?

      Instead of going after medicare , Repubs should have gone after welfare and taxpayer funded freebies for illegals . Investigate that and expose the government subsidies to drug cartels and jihadies .
      Stop incentivizing anchor babies being bred for the exclusive purpose of welfare, food stamps , free housing, free school, free medical, free college, free everything .
      Repubs should not have handled this 3rd rail of SS and Medicare. They should have done everything but handle these 2 issues and let Obama burn his hands .
      Americans pay into the system as required by the government ,
      and by the time its THEIR time to get THEIR money back as promised by the government ,

The illegals don’t make jobs…..they merely TAKE jobs. And then they take free healthcare, free lunches, free tuition, and eventually free social security checks without contributing a penny of their own because they are getting paid off the grid.       Obama doesn’t have a budget plan, he just wants to raise taxes so that he can keep spending at the current levels. Sorry dude but our credit rating was downgraded for a reason, whether you refuse to believe it or not. We can’t INVEST (code word for spend more money) in anything until we do something about our debt, anyone who insists on spending more or spending at current levels doesn’t have the best interest of the USA at heart.
