Obama ‘Beats’ Bush’s U.S. Debt Accumulation…in Less Than Half the Time

The nation’s fiscal house is in utter shambles. For decades, the U.S. has accumulated deficits which have collectively added trillions to the total debt. Currently, the nation is $14.4 trillion in the hole — and the figure is growing.
With both sides of the political aisle debating ways to pare down the country’s mounting debt, it’s likely that the monumental $4 trillion that has already been incurred under President Barack Obama will raise some eyebrows. HotAir.com’s Ed Morrissey has more:
In 31 months of Barack Obama’s presidency, according to the Treasury and CBS News, the US has added $4 trillion to its national debt. That approaches the presidential record set by George W. Bush of $4.9 trillion, but there’s a catch to that. Bush set that record in two terms — in 96 months.
So, with only one-third of the time Bush spent running the nation, Obama has presided over nearly the same sum in debt acquisition. Considering the nation’s fiscal trajectory, this revelation will likely be a factor in both the 2012 campaign and the bi-partisan debt negotiations that precede it.
Morrissey points out that Bush added a monumental $51 billion per month to the nation’s debt during his presidency. But, Obama, with only 31 months in the White House, has presided over an average monthly rate of $129 billion (or 152 percent more than Bush’s debt acquisition).
Obama and the Democrats have blamed much of the debt on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Bush tax cuts, a prescription program for Senior Citizens and a variety of other issues (mostly associated with the president’s predecessor). CBS News has more:
[Obama blames] the recession, and its resulting decrease in tax revenue on businesses, for making fewer sales, and more employees being laid off. He says the recession also resulted in more government spending due to increased unemployment insurance payments, subsidies to farms and funding of infrastructure programs that were part of his stimulus program.
But, as Morrissey points out, the wars started early in Bush’s presidency as did the tax cuts that Democrats typically lament. If these were the root cause of the nation’s debt problems, conservatives then wonder: Why is debt expanding much more rapidly under Obama’s watch (i.e. wouldn’t Bush have had a high rate of debt expansion as well)?
Watch Obama discuss these issues during his bus tour earlier this month:
Some, though, believe that the CBS News piece (referenced above) that spawned this negative coverage of Obama’s associated debt is inaccurate, incomplete and unfair. TPM’s Brian Buetler writes:
It ignores key facts about the nature of government debt. For instance the nominal size of the debt isn’t important except as compared to the concurrent size of the economy — the debt-to-GDP ratio. Additionally, if growth of debt over time is what you’re interested in, then the key question is percent-growth, not nominal growth.
Buetler also mentions the fact that Bush inherited budget surpluses, while Obama did not. Still, he admits that the situation is grim.
Regardless of how one views the partisan handling of the nation’s fiscal drama, the need for reform and balanced books is inherent. It’s also important to remember that presidents make budget proposals, but that Congress does the real spending.
Presidents oversee the process, broker deals and attempt to guide the nation and her leaders along a path toward fiscal sustainability (that’s the intention, at least).

This is totally unfair to those who paid into it for years and those who are NOW paying into it. SS is out of money because the CORRUPT leaders of this country dipped their filthy fingers into it and bankrupted it. THEY ROBBED THE TAXPAYER.
Report Post »I also believe that too much is given to welfare…..you’ve got kids who come from wealthy families getting food stamps while in college! When I was young if you were on welfare and could work, the unemployment agency and welfare agencies were knocking on your door after you to get a job, they hounded you which was smart. Not so today, but in defense of those out of work, Obama has made it easy for all who wish to be on welfare and also has extended the unemployment benefits which is robbing them from obtaining future employment because their skills have diminished from not working. Corporations have left USA and even now are leaving USA. Obama has given millions to this Company who makes Solar Panels and now they are taking their business to CHINA along with our taxpayer dollars. So IF our leaders were smart, they would encourage Corporations to thrive here in USA thus providing jobs and there would be no need for SS cuts to the elderly. But Obama wants the opposite just like his pastor and Socialist professors taught him to do.

Do we leave American citizens to starve, to live on the streets.. you want to see anarchy?? That is what will happen! Years ago, the Welfare System.. told white American’s that they had to look for work and you had to prove they were looking for work, to continue to get any welfare or food stamps etc..yet the same people saw the illegal and the generational welfare recipients never having to do that! You had to be disabled to recieve all the entitlements. Welfare can be a good thing to give people a hand up, it should be temporary and people should be required to look for work and prove that they are looking for work. Illegals should not recieve anything only the elderly or the disabled should recieve full entitlements. Would you deny the old the extra food stamps they need to eat, the mentally disabled, the physically disabled?? The Welfare system can work.. but requirements are needed. For those who are capable to work.. why not find jobs they can perform, like helping with the upkeep of our city streets, our parks etc etc.. they can recieve their food stamps or welfare check but still are required to work to recieve these benefits. We can take care of our own. But illegals should recieve nothing!

Your presupposition is severely flawed. Of course people are going to need help from time to time. However, every single program you list is run by the government – why does government always have to be the one to provide help to those who need it? The private sector has proven millions of times that it can do a MUCH better job of doing everything better whereas the government wastes up to 75% of what it takes from taxpayers. What is SO wrong with letting the private sector help people when they need it INSTEAD OF THE GOVERNMENT??? We’re sick and tired of the government taking (and wasting) our money for things it doesn’t even have the CONSTITUTIONAL AUTHORITY to do!!!

It was planned that way twenty years ago when the ball really started rolling and everything done since has been to accelerate it. Regulations, laws, red-tape, taxes, anti-business environment to drive the jobs offshore and it has worked as planed. This is not an accident, it’ s by design. A plan is being followed and the people are falling for it keeping that snowball rolling. At some point it will stop, that ‘s not an option, the real question will be “what now” . That is what has people fighting this have and have not battle. Programs and more programs without taking the jobs back is only hastening that end. The strong will survive and the rest will not, “which are we”.

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 11:52am@Airgun Like our national disgrace Rush, you do a fairly good job at laying out the problem, but a very weak one in terms of the cause. The minimum wage does not cause US employers to hire illegal aliens, their greed does. They have a choice and they prefer to exploit cheap illegal aliens, pay them off the books and provide no benefits. They pay no payroll taxes and provide no benefits. The result is a drag on the rest of us. Your reference to the state of the economy does not correlate with timing or facts. Bush did an adequate job through war spending and tax reductions to put the federal budget on a failure course. Wall St. did the rest beginning in 2007 to torpedo the economy with their mortgage scam. The result was a dramatic decrease in economic activity and thus tax revenues. Bush left a $1.7 trillion debt for fiscal year ending 09/30/2008, by way of his bank bailout and of course he was running almost a $ 1 trillion debt before that. Obama’s first budget would begin 10/1/2008. Let’s talk about embedded spending on wars and real increases in discretionary spending compared to the unnecessary wars.

So why hasn’t the Democrat controlled Senate passed a budget in over 800 days? Better face the facts that Obama will outspend Bush in under half the time and that will seal the Democrats fate in 2012. Let’s see Bush spent about 1.6 Billion a week compared to Obama’s 4.5 Billion a week. The people are tired of it. He accomplished this by borrowing money from benefit trust accounts. If he would have sold Treasury bonds to get his “surpluses”, it would have been considered deficit. But, by borrowing from benefit trust accounts it is considered income and not counted as “deficit”. An accounting trick. Obama and the rest of the cast of idiots are doing everything within their power to drag us back to the Great Depression, with exorbitant interest rates and horrendous progressive tax rates and massive inflation.
Gird ‘em if you got ’em.

New national debt data: It’s growing about $3 million a minute, even during his vacation
Report Post »Updated numbers for the national debt are just out: It’s now $14,639,000,000,000.
When Barack Obama took the oath of office twice on Jan. 20, 2009, CBS’ amazing number cruncher Mark Knoller reports, the national debt was $10,626,000,000,000.
That means the debt that our federal government owes a whole lot of somebodies including China has increased $4,247,000,000,000 in just 945 days. That’s the fastest increase under any president ever.
Or last week’s three-day Midwestern tour in the president’s new $1.1 million Death Star bus? National debt went up $16,988,000,000 while he rode around speaking and buying ice cream cones.
ABC News’ Luis Martinez (@LMartinezABC) reports: The cost of U.S. military intervention in Libya has cost American taxpayers an estimated $896 million through July 31, the Pentagon said today.
The U.S. has also promised $25 million in non-lethal aid to the Libyan Transitional National Council, half of which the Defense Department has already on MRE’s (military lingo for Meals, Ready to Eat).

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 4:24pmBush and the Republicans did run up debt, and I am no fan of their action on the ecomony, but the country did not start to fail until the Democrats took over Congress in 2007. That is when the deficits started to get really big – under Pelosi. The Republicans actually tried to prevent the mortgage failure with Freddie and Fannie, but the Democrats blocked it. RIVERDOG1, the real facts are opposite of how you tried to present them.
Nice try, liar.

Posted on August 24, 2011 at 9:44amAnd for 4.9 trillion, Bush gave us a neutralized Iraq and Afganistan, 6%ish unemployment. 4 trillion of Obama debt has given us record joblessness, terrorist resurgence (anyone notice the IRA is back in buseness), and the Taliban is setting up to take back Afganistan. I like the Bush spending better, although i favor the “stop spending more than you have” plan the best.
