Obama Blames Lazy Oil Companies for America’s Energy Shortfall

With $5/gallon gas closer to reality than 7% unemployment, Americans want oil companies to get out there and ‘drill, baby drill.’  Some surveys show a majority of us support drilling in Alaska’s oil rich Arctic National Wildlife Reserve. Obama Blames Lazy Oil Companies for America’s Energy Shortfall If the American people seem to be demanding more drilling, why are we still sending billions and billions of dollars to unfriendly governments in the Middle East, while we sit on these rich oil reserves? The answer is simple, oil companies are just too damn lazy to get out there and drill for it – President Obama basically said so on Friday. Sean Higgins of Investor’s Business Daily picked up on the Presidential blame-storming at Friday’s press conference, his ears pricked up when Obama said the following about our energy needs and the oil drillers:

There is more we can do, however. For example, right now, the (oil) industry holds leases on tens of millions of acres — both offshore and on land — where they aren’t producing a thing. So I’ve directed the Interior Department to determine just how many of these leases are going undeveloped and report back to me within two weeks so that we can encourage companies to develop the leases they hold and produce American energy. People deserve to know that the energy they depend on is being developed in a timely manner.

The guys who drill for oil also took exception to the President’s words, as reported by the Oil & Gas Journal’s Nick Snow;

Oil and gas industry groups immediately challenged his statement. “The Obama administration continues to delay or defer action on developing our domestic resources of oil and natural gas at every turn,” American Petroleum Institute Pres. Jack N. Gerard said. “The trend is alarming. The administration has postponed lease sales in offshore areas. It has cancelled lease sales in onshore federal lands. It has extended permitting timelines for current leases and added unnecessary regulatory burdens. It has chosen inaction on essential energy projects that would create jobs, drive economic growth, and boost federal revenues.”

Speaking of doing things in a ‘timely manner’ – it was late February when the government issued the first deep water drilling permit since the BP-Deepwater Horizon blowout happened in April of last year.  Before you start applauding and hope that this bodes well for domestic oil production,  check out the item that appeared on Politico just a week earlier:

The Obama administration has fired another shot in the fight over the speed with which the Interior Department is — or isn’t — letting oil drillers resume work in the Gulf of Mexico after last year’s Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. The administration late Friday appealed a judge’s orders directing the department to act on several pending Gulf Coast deep-water drilling permits.

Politico also brought to light the comments made by former President Bill Clinton on Friday at a closed-door meeting during CERA’s 30th anniversary seminar in Houston.  Clinton joined George W. Bush on a high powered panel about energy and both supported more exploration for domestic oil.  The highlight of the session from Darren Goode‘s item:

“Bush said all the things you’d expect him to say” on oil and gas issues, said Jim Noe, senior vice president at Hercules Offshore and executive director of the pro-drilling Shallow Water Energy Security Coalition. But Clinton added, “You’d be surprised to know that I agree with all that,” according to Noe and others in the room. Clinton said there are “ridiculous delays in permitting when our economy doesn’t need it,” according to Noe and others.

Bill Clinton and George W. Bush agree on the most obvious answer to America’s energy needs as our current President insists that supply is not the problem while his administration works to slow down efforts to access the oil we know is available. And every week the prices at the pump rise on speculation that the supply lines from the Middle East may be cut.

    Hey I‘m obama’s worst critic(maybe not worst) but if these oil co’s are sitting on leases and not drilling let them step up and tells us why.Then again I think I they‘d say there’s no oil there.

      As I have been told, a company many have many leases in an area, but development happens with a few wells being drilled to find the general pool. So using a stat like the numbers of leases vs wells drilled or being drilled may not be accurate.

      Oil companies are around to make money and they do that by producing the gooey dinosaur juice we call oil.

      Leases are one thing-leases for no oil bearing property are another.
      if the studies show small likely hood of oil-the lease is not worth the paper.
      there is Oil in the Gulf and in Alaska-drill baby drill-in the right locations.

    Mexico, China, and everybody else that has an oil rig is drilling in the Gulf … except us … If there Is another spill, will it matter if the rig belongs to us, or Venezuela?..

    Does “Anybody” remember “why” we BOUGHT Alaska from Russia?.. I do, For it’s RESOURCES!.. you know wood, fish, gold … OIL!.. We already know it’s there, all we have to do is drill and get it.

    Most of those leases are for areas that “might’ produce or have unproven reserves or that are being explored …and then there’s “How can you drill when the Gov,ment won’t approve permits.” Or worse, rescinds them after they are granted
    Then there’s the part about “Infrastructure” … If you drill in Montana, Where are you gonna send it?.. new pipeline across State lines?.. Right, the envirowhackos will have no problems with that (How are those Gov’ment subsidized Solar projects, in the desert, workin out for ya?), makes it much more expensive … Hey how about on sight refinery’s?.. yep, that’ ll work too …

    This is what happens when you put a “Lazy” community organizer in power … He thinks if you just “Say it” it will be so … Real life don’t work that way … ‘trouble is, half the country thinks it does …

    As a retired engineer with 20+ years in the oil and gas production industry, I know it takes several years from the time a property is leased until the first drop of oil reaches the refinery. Instead of taking credit for relatively high rates of domestic production, Obama should be giving credit to Bush for the wells which are now on line. His administration has slowed or stopped new wells promoting a shortage in the not too distant future. It is very unfortunate for the USA that the only promise Obama has kept is to promise energy costs will necessarily rise.

    We are third in oil production, we have 2 percent of the worlds oil and use 30 percent. We can’t drill our way out of this. We have 18 year high in reserves but oil speculation on Wall Street is pushing up Oil prices for no reason. Get a grip people.

Just read an article about a company that received $350 million dollars to work on a hybrid car–they have one but it will cost $96, 000—guess that is one the President would call a good investment of stimulus money!       Gonzo, I disagree wholeheartedly. This is exactly what he said he was going to do before he got elected. He is perhaps one of the most effective Presidents in recent history.       Between the progressives and the tree huggers, not only will we not be able to drill for any domestic oil, we will NEVER build another nuclear plant in this country again due to the calamity in Japan after the earthquake.       Maybe you should go listen to the news conference (or watch the video). I am amazed at how easy it is for you fools to take everything Obama says and turn it into something other than what he actually said. Do a little research… Domestic Oil production is at the highest level since 2004. In addition, the Obama administration has ISSUED new permits for areas of exploration that were previously forbidden by law. This includes Alaska. However, I know that facts don’t count for people who just get their news from right wing sources.

      Folks! This nonsense about the oil companies being at fault for the energy shortfall is a flat out lie! Either this illegal president is lying or he doesn’t know what the hell he is doing! I say he is both!

      Folks! It is the governments responsibility to defend America against foreign and domestic enemies. To do so is why we have Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. For the military to do it’s job…guess what? The military needs oil! A Constitutional argument could and should be made that America should have been an oil independent nation decades ago by drilling for oil in the United States!

      Do people understand that if our muslim enemies cut off the present oil supply coming to America for the long term and we use up the oil in the oil reserve…..we are screwed! America needs just for the sake of self defense to be oil independent and to also tell the muslim oil suppliers to take their oil and shove it! The American people need to tell the government that WE THE PEOPLE will no longer be held hostage to foreign oil anymore!

      Only a few years ago the democrats were complaining about oil company “windfall profits”.

      Claims of “lazy oil companies” sound like desperation to me. As we all know for every gallon sold state and federal government take their cuts first.

      Confounding this perverted logic is ‘Big ’O‘s’ attack on oil companies in the last few months. But, if you are paying attention to the way the democrats are playing the Wisconsin political situation you see them trying to demonize non union support and business as well as politicians for this rational new consideration for dealing with the extortion unions execute on the tax paying public. I think this is the same tactic being applied to oil companies. Hoping Americans will “turn” on big oil. It’s almost predictable.

      In his presser on Friday, the O crowed about how under his administration US oil output is the highest in years. While that statement is true, it is a very disingenuous half truth (like most of his pronouncements). All the wells that are on line and producing were granted permits under Pres. Clinton and Bush II. Under his administration, none are on line or producing and, in fact, even the license that was finally issued last week will more than likely not come on line until well after his term of office(even if, God forbid, he is elected for a second term).
      Is it me or has the O suddenly become infatuated with the words: I, me, and my? It is almost as if after two years of establishing plausible deniability, he was decided to take ownership of what is being done under his watch.

      …and not only is your excellent comment true, we add the fact that most of the existing oil lease lands & waters are low-probability of find areas…geological testings shows that there is oil there but how much is debatable…seems to me that the oil companies have chosen to put their exploration & development money into areas with a higher probability of payoff than the majority of the oil lease areas currently project…

      Not only is there the issues of oil but the interior dept, Ken Salazar, Has been revoking coal leases and permits. Energy??? We dont need o stinking energy.
