Obama Calls India Creator, Not Poacher, of US Jobs

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Searching for help half a world away, President Barack Obama on Saturday embraced India as the next jobs-creating giant for hurting Americans, not a cheap-labor rival that outsources opportunity from the United States.

Fresh off a political trouncing at home, Obama was determined to show tangible, economic results on his long Asia trip, and that was apparent from almost the moment he set foot on a steamy afternoon in the world’s largest democracy. By the end of the first of his three days in India, he was promoting $10 billion in trade deals — completed in time for his visit — that the White House says will create about 54,000 jobs at home.

That’s a modest gain compared with the extent of the enduring jobless crisis in the United States. Economists say it would require on the level of 300,000 new jobs a month to put a real dent in an unemployment rate stuck near 10 percent.

Yet to Obama, the bigger picture was the lucrative potential of an unleashed trading relationship between India and the United States. He seemed comfortable and energized away from Washington, days removed from the GOP’s election thumping.

“For America, this is a jobs strategy,” Obama said of his emphasis on trade, although it could stand as a motto for his 10-day trip. He is spending Sunday with young people in Mumbai and then heading onto meetings in New Delhi, the capital, before shifting later in the week ahead to Indonesia and economic talks in South Korea and Japan,

In India for the first time, Obama quickly got a sense of riches and poverty, history and tragedy.

His helicopter ride into this bustling financial center took in some of the country’s slums. His luxury accommodation for the night, the Taj Mahal hotel, was one of the sites of a terrorist rampage in Mumbai that killed 166 people. Obama and his wife, Michelle, paid quiet tribute to the 31 people slain at the hotel, looking over their names inscribed in a memorial before meeting with victims’ families and survivors of the shootings.

“We visit here to send a very clear message that in our determination to give our people a future of security and prosperity, the United States and India stand united,” Obama said from an outdoor plaza, the soaring Gateway of India and the Arabian Sea behind him. “We’ll never forget.”

Indian commentators seized on the president’s failure to mention Pakistan, India’s neighbor and bitter rival. Pakistan was home to the 10 assailants.

The president also celebrated the life of a personal hero, Mohandas K. Gandhi, a father of Indian independence and model of peaceful activism. The Obamas spent time at the home-turned-museum where Gandhi once lived. They signed personal messages into the guest book and pledged to bring their daughters, Sasha and Malia, back one day.

Obama directly addressed the belief in the U.S. that India is robbing Americans of jobs. He acknowledged that many Americans only know trade and global commerce as the source of a job shipped overseas.

“There still exists a caricature of India as a land of call centers and back offices that cost American jobs. That’s a real perception,” Obama said. He noted the real concern in India that American corporate giants, if welcomed, would run mom-and-pop stories out of business and upend Indian culture.

Seeking to dismiss all “old stereotypes,“ Obama said the relationship between the countries is ”creating jobs, growth, and higher living standards in both our countries. And that is the truth.”

In the fallout of the U.S. elections, in which Democrats lost control of the House and Obama’s ability to connect with his country was called into doubt, the president said one lesson learned was the need to set a better tone with business leaders. He was effusive on that front in Mumbai, gathering with top U.S. executives and studying up on their commerce with India.

“Just around this table you’re seeing billions of dollars in orders from U.S. companies, tens of thousands of jobs being supported,” he said. “We’re a potential that has barely been scratched.”

The White House arranged for four American chief executives who are in India for the occasion to brief reporters traveling with the president. They played up the importance of India as a trading partner and praised Obama’s decision to come to the country to underscore that point in person.

Progress will take much more than public understanding. India’s infrastructure remains an impediment to progress. And Obama’s challenged India on the sore spot of shrinking its own barriers to trade and foreign investment. But his larger message was one of the united values and missions of the two largest democracies in the world.

Making that point, Obama even generated some laughter at his own expense, offering a reminder of the troubles at home.

“Our countries are blessed with the most effective form of government the world has ever known: democracy,” he said. “Even if it can be slow at times. Even if it can be messy. Even if, sometimes, the election doesn‘t turn out as you’d like.”

Onkar Kanwar, chairman of India’s largest tire manufacturer, Apollo Tyres, said he appreciated the symbolism of Obama’s coming to India during his first term and choosing to visit Mumbai first.

“Ties are getting closer and closer, which needs to be done. … This demonstrates his commitment to another large democracy where he sees a lot of synergies,” Kanwar said. “He’s done all right.”

Associated Press writers Ravi Nessman in New Delhi and Erica Werner and Erika Kinetz in Mumbai contributed to this report.

As once again Obama mis-reads the election results. We must send a message to those in Washington on what they MUST do for the American people….
    1. Stop the bleeding (NO more jobs outsourced)
    2. Remove all the diseased tissue before gangreen sets in farther (ie, dismantle EPA, NEA, SEIU, Federal reserve, you get the point…) I have changed Mike Church’s quote on one of his T-shirts, “600 federal agencies at the botom of the Potomac” is not a good start, its a “slow start”
    3. An enforcement to Article five of the constitution that will ensure that ANY law or legislation that come out of Washington MUST be adapted and approved by a majority of the states.
    4. A vigorous enforcement to the political oath to uphold and defend the Constitution of thr US. You break your oath, we remove you from office. In my little world words DO mean things.
    5. Elect politicians of honor and integrity (Hey allow me my pipe dream) and support them when they are good and hold their feet to the fire when their not.
    6. Remove Obama from office. He has had more than enough chances to get it right. It has nothing to do with his race or his religion but every thing to do with his character and ignorance.

India is our natural ally! Obama’s ignoring of india has been the real problem.

India is free, peaceful, secular, western-friendly, capitalistic and an emerging counter-weight to China. Not having a close relationship with them is foolish.

This so called “man child” president just don’t get it. Never has! Never will!

I have first hand experience. Indians in America making a wage here won’t buy things made in America because of the price. How will they buy it there on the Indian wage? If you think that technology shared won’t result in technology lost, you got your head in the sand.

How often do you think they are going to reorder aircraft. This is a symbolic bandaid to benefit “big” labor.

On another front, Pakistan (Pock e stan) has got to be fuming over this trip. No one on the left is worried about creating more terrorist now when it‘s BO’s show!

On yet another front, I do feel safer with BO out of the country! The rest of the world loves him so much I don‘t see why they don’t just keep him.

I am starting to believe that Obama is truelly trying to destroy America. And this Bernanke dude who one day after the mid-term elections announces another 800billion+ in quantitive easing to devaluate the American dollar by 20% is another example of the madness of these Progressive Commies. They want to devaluate the dollar so that all currencies balance out and then they will be able to create one currency for everybody. Once again this does nothing but hurt America, what the hell are we doing, there is over 250 million of us and only (rough estimate) 100 thousand of them. We have to start doing something real soon or were doomed…yes I do watch Glenn Beck and I believe every word he says.

The ONLY thing that Asia (India and China) offers is cheap labor, and India, not for long as the influx of capital into their economy is raising labor costs. If we are going to get back into manufacturing again, the manufacturing labor in this country need a reality check. You aren’t worth, anymore, what your contracts say. Renegotiate them, oh, and we ALL better get used to a base economic lifestyle more like China and India…base substistance with few luxuries. This is the “New World Order” that was snuck in by the economic Illuminati, while we slept. It’s likely too late.

If Mr. Obama were a private citizen no one would know of or care about his mental illnesses (plural) but as he currently lives off the public trough his state of mind becomes our concern…a national defense and security concern…

Totally transform this country….with as much speed as he can because many are awaking up to this fact. I make no excuses for him or his actions. India isn’t taking jobs…Obama is giving them. China didn’t take..Clinton gave. George Bush remains silent.

The Bush silence bothers me alot. If you see wrongs you open your mouth and announce that you see trouble. If you witness a crime you call the police. Silence will not solve anything..thus, the Tea Party. It would have been nice if Bush had jumped out there and said that he would have welcomed the Tea Party during his tenure, but maybe if he is more progressive, he would not. He’s an interesting study.

Perhaps Mr Obummer would have his telestrater give him the statistics of unemployed IT professionals in the US that have lost their jobs directly because of companies outsourcing to Infosys and Tata (et al.). How about the bottom lines of all of the US resource organization that are destroyed when these companies weasel their way into corporate boardrooms. There is no way any project performed by or in conjunction with these Indian companies save American companies money. The only way these Indian companies exist is because of tax breaks (continually favored by the GOP and also by the Dems) for these companies exist. Please, please, please legislators, make the playing field level for American companies again and get rid of the policies that are sending jobs overseas. Remember, once an Indian, a Chinese, or any other national receives a paycheck in their country, those dollars will never benefit the USA.

Although I have nothing against the people of India, I am livid about the amount of jobs they are taking from American citizens. They copy and buy all our technology then sell it for 1/10th of the price. Once India becomes wealthier then America they will turn there back’s on us and treat us like third-tier individuals. This New World Order has got to stop, it benefits every country except the USA.

A company can spend a hundred years designing and perfecting a process and India or China can get it for free by hiring a few people to train theirs. We have been robbed blind from every corner of our history. Development technology and the process in any business sector is our greatest competitive advantage and our biggest loss. The only way possible for any jobs to be created here is for the government to subsidize manufacturing like Japan and Korea did in the 70s. That allows the selling of products at low prices and the cost of producing them here is more than they are worth. They call it “exporting unemployment” Japan was able to destroy our steel industry that way and then Asia picked up on the same tactic and finished them off. Followed by walking in and buying up the bones of what was left. So what there is left is owned by Europeans and they bought it for a song. The same is happening with all our industries, subsidies the killing of American industries, buy them cheap when they die and own all the business cheap. Text book attacks. Our government helped them do it with IRS, FDA, OSHA, EPA and lots of regulations. The unions helped them mightily and they are doing it right now. In the Clinton days it was said to be done with bags of money that was openly joked about in the media. Every administration in the last 20 years has had a part in it at differing degrees. You know what they say in Washington, “money talks and will buy you anything” Al Gore is the poster child for the death of American industries and the Chinese loved him.

Since “free” trade policies began, our industrial/manufacturing base has gone down the crapper. It’s time to stop the insanity of tax breaks to relocate offshore, reestablish tariffs, so as to make it a level playing field. The labor unions have also helped to price us out of the market.
The major downside of the Republican party is that they believe in free trade no matter what. They need to wake up!

Mr Obama is still clueless about even basic economics, his idea of creation of jobs in this case will most likely fall to the unions, as others have mentioned; or he will attempt to nationalize the aerospace industries as he has with government motors and then ‘create’ the new jobs as those that belong to government employees.

He fails again to comprehend that the reason jobs are fleeing overseas from here is that with the way our government is strangling the employers, they will ship jobs to where they can find the best way to make a profit.

Note on free trade, It’s not free trade for us. We compete with no one that has the limitations, regulation and tax load that we have. If we make anything here we don’t start out the cost at zero. In some cases we have more cost in place than the product is worth worldwide before we even start. Bottom line, it’s not free trade, we are playing with a stacked deck.

In the O’s mind create and save mean the same thing. It is important to note also that all 3 of these “major” contracts were already in the works and in at least one case, the announcement was postponed until the O was in India. Is it not typical that this man travels halfway round the world to “mourn” the loss of 31 people in a terrorist attack, yet cannot/will not find the time to do the same for the victims of Ft. Hood and in fact, refuses to use the words terrorist, jihadist, Islamic extremist to describe the event? Further, he or one of his minions has the military report sanitized so that none of those words or, indeed, any reference to faith is not included in the document.
Look at what he has said and to whom he has said it and ponder this scenario. In my opinion, O is not planning to run for re-election for a second term. He and his puppet master-Spooky Dude with help from their ally, Maurice Strong, are using these four years to set the O up to replace Ban Ki-Moon at the UN…

goes to india at 200 billion day and MAY have created 54000 jobs? WTF. Jobs that came from America, as well. Ignores American beliefs because HE doesn’t think the populace is right? This man is NOT working for America,,,,absolutely not. His only intent is on campaigning for the U.N. and probably has an eye on a ‘particular’ U.N. seat. Anyone care to guess which U.N. seat??? Those that voted for Obama still think he’s what America needs? or what ‘other’ countries need at America’s expense/demise. He gets voted in again in 2012,,,,,,I’m leaving leaving America (after many generations in America) because it will be apparent the MAJORITY of Americans obviously are in line with the same thinking as Obama. The U.S. will be finished.

India is a former colony of England, so his visit makes sense to me he is not there to help the US he is there to transfer technology just like Clinton did for the Chinese. He see‘s India the same way he see’s Kenya a victim of English oppression. What jobs are created in the US from this trip will go as payback to those who donated money to get him elected. The rest to Unions and to transfer some of what wealth is left in the US to India, Obama does not care about high unemployment in America as far as he is concerned we deserve it, remember India is still viewed by the Left as a third world country despite it’s economic success. India will benefit from the military use of Technology and Obama gets to continue weakening America’s industrial abilities. The cost of this trip also figures into his beliefs, he is spreading wealth and employing thousands of Indians at the expense of the tax payers or what’s left of the tax payers in this country. Exit question ? does anyone think he knows it ****** us off when he and his wife flaunt their extravagant life style in front of us.

It looks like Obama is arming India. That is worrisome, because it means he realizes that Pakistan is going to the Taliban, nukes and all — “all,” meaning precious American lives wasted under his command. Obama’s diplomatic skills are a pathetic zero. His Nobel Peace Prize is an AFFRONT to America. What a callous coward. We won’t forget either, Barack Hussein.

OH, and thanks for explaining that your trip to India is really another of your cr*p-filled stimulus plans.

This is commerce, and at first glance it looks positive…but, It is just first installment on political debts owed by Obama to General electric and the UAW. Big,big contributors.
We need all we can get, but call it what it is, please.
Join the national association for abolishing political correctness-the NAAPC. No dues, no obligations but to call it like it is.

If GE is evil, then pass the word, DON’T BUY ANYTHING WITH THAT NAME”. Look in your garage. Did YOU buy American? We can stop some of the outsourcing by refusing to participate through our purchases! Read all the labels! BUY AMERICAN when you can, even if it costs more. How long can you go on this crusade? I have gone YEARS on major purchases. My Liberal friends say they don’t care. Do my Conservative friends?

Years ago I worked for Grumman Aircraft, now Northrop Grumman. When I was employed with Grumman it was a NON union manufacturing and Engineering company. No employee wanted any part of any union. It was a GREAT company to work for with benefits and pay that was equal to or better than union companies that Grumman competed against.
