Obama Caught Misquoting House Member He Criticized — and Beck Has the Evidence

President Obama singled out a GOP Congresswoman for comments she made about student loans, The Blaze reported yesterday. The president also called out Rep. Akin (R-MO) for comments he made on the same subject.
As it turns out, the president publicly chided these two Republican members of Congress for things they didn’t actually say.
The two members of Congress claim President Obama “misrepresented them in citing comments suggesting they oppose keeping student loan rates at 3.4 percent, rather than allowing them to revert to 6.8 percent on July 1,” the Washington Post reports.
As mentioned yesterday, President Obama went after GOP Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (R-NC) in both her home state and at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
“I’m going to quote this because I know you guys will think I’m making it up,” the president said at the University of North Carolina. “She said she had ‘very little tolerance for people who tell me they graduate with debt because there’s no reason for that.’”
See it at the 7:45 mark:
But the quotes the president uses are not entirely accurate.
What the North Carolina Congresswoman actually said was this: “I have very little tolerance for people who tell me that they graduate with $200,000 of debt or even $80,000 of debt because there’s no reason for that.”
“She went on to say that she reminds people that the Declaration of Independence promises life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness — stressing the word ‘pursuit,’” The Post reports.
“You don’t sit on your butt and have it dumped in your lap,” she added.
“The only thing I would say is that I wish the president’s speech writers would get their quotes right,” Rep. Foxx said yesterday in reference to President Obama using her as an example in a not-campaign speech.
On radio Thursday, Glenn Beck caught the mischaracterization and played both sets of audio, and he was sure to offer some hysterical running commentary:
And Rep. Foxx is not alone in this — the president also went after Rep. Todd Akin for the same thing.
“You’ve got one member of Congress who compared these student loans — I’m not kidding here — to a ‘stage-three cancer of socialism,’” the president said at the University of Iowa.
“Stage-three cancer? I don’t know where to start. What do you mean? What are you talking about? Come on. Just when you think you’ve heard it all in Washington, somebody comes up with a new way to go off the deep end,” he said.
Although President Obama did not specifically name Rep. Akin, his comments are clearly in reference to remarks the Missouri Congressman made in a debate Saturday. When asked about the subject, Rep. Akin criticized the government for taking control of college loans in 2009.
“America has got the equivalent of stage 3 cancer of socialism because the federal government is tampering in all kinds of stuff it has no businesses tampering in,” is what he actually said.
Rep. Akin shot back at President Obama in a statement:
With all due respect, the President misquoted me. I was not saying that student loans are a cancer. I referred to the policies where there is a government takeover of private industries.
The Congressman says he suspects “the President was given a misquotation.”
“I am sure we have a fundamental disagreement on the role of government and what constitutes socialism regarding current public policy,” Rep. Akin said.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 3:48pmMy thinking on that would be, as a student rack up $150,000 in SL debt, file BK at 21 then have a clean record at 28 or so. Sounds like a sweet deal for those that would be willing to exploit it. The only value of having the US Government even loan the money is that it is NOT dischargeable…in my opinion. With 50% unemployment amongst college graduates…we’re continuing to loan money because….? I‘m certain it’s akin to the 1999 legislation for housing….to delay a downturn. A normal cycle of supply and demand would continually purge the system.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 4:13pmRight now the money is too easy to get. People that cannot afford 200k loans for school are getting them. Schools know that all this money is out there and they hike their prices. If suddenly people were restricted to loans that they could afford, students would be forced to go to less expensive schools. Schools would be forced to lower their prices to compete for the limited money. An education should be considered a luxury and these loans should be forced to be paid through wage garnishment and late penalties.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 5:07pmHelp me out here how does leaving out the $ amounts alter the essence and intent of the quote. Obviously this is a group that doesn’t grasp that educating individuals to the highest level they can perform at is beneficial to society. College and post grad work should be much much cheaper in the US and based on merit and performance. For most states they need only return to the funding levels they provided in the 1960′s, 1970‘s and 1908’s, the years most members of congress attended. In the case of Ohio it covered 70% of the cost of state universities and colleges. Today it covers 17% of the cost. Which means congress and current citizens do not want to provide to invest in the younger generation at the levels their grand parents did. Or restated the ME generation focuses on providing college for their children and could care less about the community at large. Where would they be if their grand parents and parents had felt that way about investing in the greater good of the community at large.

Health care, housing, jobs and food are not rights either. When I started (I am on my bachelors’ program for criminal justice) back in 2009 the graduation rate was in the upper 70%, and no it is only 49%. The state funded Ivy school only have a 6% graduation rate, that is because it is state funded for those who meet the guidelines. A student that is a minority that has children can make $30,000 a year that is after everything (books, tuition, lab fees) is paid for. They don’t have to worry about student loans. I have to get loans, but in doing so, I know I have to pay them back because I know I am going to exceed and most of the students thses days just do it for a pay check. No one put a gun to my head and said take this loan, but the school’s “financial aid” package was nothing more than loans. Worst of all once you’re in, it‘s not like you’re going to suddenly stop and say what this is not right, you just keep going and the schools, the feds, and the private lenders just keep giving you money without any real concept of how much you are borrowing. When you buy a car you have to go through a lot of paperwork to get a loan. With student loans it’s as easy as a few clicks of a button and an electronic signature. Bam you have your tuition paid for the year. Make student loan more easily dischargeable or we risk killing the next middle class.

The reason university costs are so high in the first place is because the government is paying the way for so many people. The government has created a demand that would not otherwise exist, so the cost must go up. The government makes is easy to borrow that money, so debt also increases, and demand goes up, so price goes up faster and debt increases faster.

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 3:49pmI agree with the Congresswoman that NO student should be in massive debt for a college education. Anyone who has such debt has failed to PLAN for a college education which will buy them a diploma for which there is unlikely to be a job at the end of the rainbow. Kids should be saving for college from the age of 12 at least. Stop buying or paying for kids to have iPads or cell phones and put funds towards job skill education. When in high school, start taking trade and/or college courses. With intense studying one can take tests at college to skip through courses and thus save more expenses.
I have a friend who worked several jobs in the summer, had work study in college plus 1 -2 off campus jobs, he cooked his own meals (hunting for meat and got vegetables through hard work on farms). He graduated with a bachelors degree with zero debt. (PLANNING! for one’s education)
A friend of mine has a daughter who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education at the end of her four year degree — she had zero debt. How did she do this? She took several courses before entering high school via home study, spent time in the LIBRARY studying at college and not going to campus sports games which earned her academic scholarships, parents tried to pay about 50% of her expenses, and she worked summer jobs.
Her younger brother FAILED to plan….his debt load is $40,000. Ouch!

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 4:03pmTPaine — you are WRONG to think that if one has $80,000 for a Juris Doctorate (law degree) that one will have a job that can manage this kind of debt obligation. The American Bar Association recently had a major article on the number of unemployed law school graduates with student loan debt obligations of $80,000 to $125,000 or more. One woman had $80,000 in student loan debt and in the nine months since graduating had two law jobs both disappeared on her via lay offs. One of those jobs paid $20/hour. The article spoke of the glut of attorneys in the USA which will take DECADES to purge. So don’t think that one can just become a lawyer and be swimming in cash.
And, certainly don’t major in mathematics, engineering, computer science, chemistry, physics — massive unemployment and under-employment in these fields as well. Think of these fields of study as nothing but ‘hobbies”. (See http://www.jobdestruction.com for information on the dire employment conditions of these professionals) Claims of ‘shortages’ of these professionals have been around since 1953 (yes, FIFTY THREE).

Posted on April 26, 2012 at 4:29pmI agree with you that the politicians are completely out of touch with regards to college tuition rates. A private college(not even prestigious) runs in the neighborhood of $30,000 and that is in state. I know many students who are are attending 2 years of community college for their general courses and then they transfer to a more expensive 4 year college for their degree. Now the 4 year colleges are starting to scrutinize the acceptance of course work from the 2 year colleges(regardless of grades) because they are greedy and would prefer to have the student complete all 4 years at their university. Many colleges prefer to accept out of state students because they make more money with out of state tuition rates.
Colleges keep raising their tuition rates because their students have easy access to low rate student loans. Colleges have billions of dollars in endowments but they keep raising the rates. Why is no one holding the colleges accountable for their soaring tuition rates…especially state colleges?????

1) Of course college costs are too high. Of things that have increased the most in the past 20 years the fastest rising has been college tuition.
2) You asked if I thought the people who have decided to attend college but did not plan on it should be denied going to college. Of course not!!! It still takes PLANNING to avoid ending up with debt that is the cost of a foreclosed home! Planning! For example: earn an associate degree (lock in one degree at a time) and work a year or two to pay that down or off before continuing the education; look for pay back programs — and there certainly are programs that one can enter in teaching to get a big chunk of that student loan paid off (you might to work in an undesirable school system but the goal is to be debt free).
3) a college degree is a dime – a dozen these days. Consider why one actually wants such a degree?
4) Look for grants and scholarships to help one complete the degree program —
5) Finally, if after weighing all the facts and being informed about the cost of a college degree — if you still are willing to take on $40,000 or $60,000 or $80,000 or more in debt for the HOPES of having a job at the other end …well, more power to ya’! But you will be saddled with the debt obligation that you freely entered into.
AND by the way, if you default on your student loan, many/all colleges will NOT release your transcripts. Hope / future employer won’t ask to see your official

It is ok to have a student loan program.. but with the understanding that it is NOT a right.. it is a gift from those who have already earned their way and are offering to help those behind them. When I received my paycheck, your money is taken out first, the federal taxes are already removed, same for the state, local and all other, you are paid before I am, you eat before I do, your rent is paid before I pay mine, your bills are paid first, your life comes before mine.
I was told that you needed this money to assist you temporarily to get back on your feet. That people have rough patches and need help from the taxpayers to make better choices, get their lives back on track. This was my duty to look out for those less fortunate, who thru no fault of their own were down on their luck, those who needed a hand up not a hand out, just something temporary for as short period of time, the children should not suffer because the parents lost their way.
The government promised this money would go to good use, it would end the “war on poverty”, and create equality in the “great society” and there would be no more poor. So the government with my tax money created programs and pathways to make sure you had every resource to be successful, to pull yourselves out of poverty.
So here we are 45 + years later, ten trillion dollars spent, the country is bankrupt, and America is 14 trillion in debt and needs to borrow another 2.7 trillion to fund the government till next year.
The country is bankrupt, a large part of it is, the government borrowing money it did not have, to give to you.

So according to you…in our consumer based CAPITALIST economy the GOP is deliberately taking the consumer’s money away so that they have more difficulty to spend on the very corporations and businesses you believe the GOP is in bed with. This is what you’re saying yes? So condensing that down even further…you believe the GOP is taking money away from the middle class leaving them with less money to spend in a consumer based economy, which relies on the consumer spending actively and shoring up the business it’s purchasing from- but the business is in bed with the GOP just the same? You‘re trying to sell the notion that tax breaks are more important to business than the consumer’s ability to spend? Is that it? Whoever sold you this cockamamie notion ENCIDIOT…I would go back and slap them in the face. No..you should do it, they’ve failed you.
