Obama Confronted by Local Reporter About Non-Stop (And Expensive) First Family Vacations

KMOV Reporter Confronts Obama On Frequent Family VacationsABC news recently reported that most Americans are cutting back on their vacation plans due to high gas prices and the lagging economy. But the Obamas seem to be oblivious to the issue.

The topic of the First Family’s frequent vacationing is one that a St. Louis TV anchor thought was worth investigating. Larry Conners of KMOV-TV wondered if the Obamas spend an inordinate amount of time vacationing at the expense of the American taxpayer?

This is not exactly a new topic:

  • The frequency and cost of these the Obama family trips has been covered on the Blaze as recently as December when the First Family’s Hawaiian vacation was reported to cost as much as $4 million dollars.
  • Last summer the Daily Mail reported that Michelle Obama had already spent up to $10 million dollars on trips to Spain, Vail, and Martha’s Vineyard.

Conners was among a group of local newspeople from around the nation invited to Washington for individual sit-down interviews with the President. Conners covered many topics with Mr. Obama, but his question about the taxpayer funded vacations (and the President’s answer) is worth reviewing:

“The economy is a big issue and concern for folks. I mean, the unemployment, trying to make ends meet, gas prices, food prices going up. Some of our viewers are complaining, they get frustrated, even angered, when they see the first family jetting around, different vacations and so forth, sometimes maybe they think under color of state business and that you’re out of touch, that you don’t really know what they’re experiencing right now.”

How did the President respond? In a slightly testy fashion:

“Well, I don’t know how many viewers you’re talking about that say that.”

Conners parried with:

“We do hear from some.”

The President seemed to be trying to diminish the question by saying the following:

“I hear from all kinds of viewers about everything.”

He eventually gave a sort-of answer, but it really side-stepped the question:

“But the fact of the matter is, I think if you look at my track record, I’m raising a family here. When we travel, we got to travel through Secret Service, and Air Force One, that’s not my choice. I think most folks understand how hard I work and how hard this administration is working on behalf of the American people.”

The answer managed to avoid the real question about the frequency of the family vacations that the Obama’s take.

The question about the vacations starts at the 1:40 mark of this clip:

Last summer, CBS News reported on the number of days that Obama had spent on vacation and compared it to the vacation days of Presidents Reagan, Bush and Clinton. The issue of the cost to country was not brought up in this comparison, just the number of days.

According to the stats kept by CBS’ Mark Knoller, both Bush and Reagan spent more time away from Washington DC than Obama has. However, it should be noted that the Reagan and Bush vacations were typically spent on their ranches. The Obama family vacations include exotic and exclusive (read “expensive”) locations around the planet.

Knoller also notes that Presidential vacations are hardly the same as vacations taken by typical Americans who can generally leave work problems in the office.

The issue of taxpayer funded vacations for the Commander in Chief will always be fodder for any president’s political opposition. But, as the 2012 summer vacation season approaches and rising gas prices add to costs of airfare and car travel, the White House must be aware that a majority of Americans have had to curtail or completely cut out their travel plans. Could this become a campaign issue for the GOP?

    Is Obama claiming he is the hardest working president in history because of all the vacations he takes? I guess because he never stops campaigning every day of his life is his excuse. Obama has more excuses than an adolescent spoiled brat. Next time lets try to elect an adult to be the leader of the free world.

      Considering the economy and that most citizens can’t even afford a weekend campout at the local lake, a decent president would vacation at one of the taxpayer owned presidential retreats right here in this country…Camp David comes to mind. Security, communications etc are already setup. And they wouldn’t need to fuel up and fly AF One. A helicoptor or two would suffice. Just think of the savings.

      They are only doing what they have always done – they are so arrogant, unpatriotic, selfish that they are unafraid to do very bold, unprecedented things – DARING us to do something about it. They know the Repub. “leadership” (LOL) are cowards and only care about re-election and won’t touch any of his fraudulent, non-constitutional stuff. Sheriff Arpaio said he has told all of our candidates about the proof of his fraudulent birth certificate but they are all “hiding” from it. It’s quite sickening. I wonder about Issa and Fast and Furious also. Seems like it’s always just talk and the facade they really care and doing something but alas, nothing really gets done. No justice or truth.

      Do these leer jet liberals not see the difference between going to your ranch in Texas were it is a relaxing place to WORK and having a separate flight for your DOG to Hawaii!!! This family has spent MILLIONS of our money on separate flights globetrotting when the man should be doing what we hired him to do! (Although if it meant keeping the county together and this pos potus away from his desk I may want to rethink that.)

      When George 2 went to the ranch…he had foreign dignitaries that met him out there many times..he did business..Obama, plays golf..
      There was a program on a couple of years ago when Bush’s book came out..there was a tour of the “ranch”..and a lovely place out there somewhere..that he says several people have come and just talked about “things” with each other..things to do with government..Obama does not understand we ..we the people..do not appreciate his constant spending. His idea of diplomacy is ..well…he doesn’t have any does he?..
      HOWEVER, THIS BEING SAID..if republicans/conservatives don’t strt pulling together, this man will be on vacation dime forthe next 4 years…REPUBLICANS/CONSERVATIVES..quit fighting each other..At least liberals do it right in voting…we dont’ seem to have a clue..

      Hmm. Presidential vacations was not on the list of things that would have to be cut under Ryan’s budget. Could that mean his vacations are more important than clean air and water, college grants, natl parks, “investments” in green energy and health care, food stamps, children, etc., etc.?

      President Obama has taken 70 days of vacation in 31 months of his Presidency. George W. Bush Jr. had taken 225 days of vacation in the first 31 months of his Presidency. More than double. You & Larry Conner & the Republicans are full of hypocritical crap.

      True, Reagan and Bush always went to Camp David or their ranches. I read somewhere that in 8 years the Secret Service had to shoot over 13 skunks – imagine the stence if he had beeen sprayed. One fall there where over a 1,000 Monarch butter flys that had to be sprayed because they were attacking the president. Reagan had a big problem with Blue Jays sipping him and they had to be shot. Reagan also had a problem with coyotes getting to close to the ranch house and had to ber shot. The Adoring fans of Obama haven’t had to be destroyed while he is taking these vacations.

      Obama is trying raise capital gains tax via the buffet rule that would raise taxes on everyone who invest in the stock market,sell a house,sell a boat,or inherit anything worth anything.
      He keeps saying rich shouldn’t pay less in taxes than regular people. But he fails to mention that those rich people are actually paying taxes on what the money the paid income tax on is making them. So not only are they paying 35% on income tax ,they’re also paying 18% on the money they make from the 65% they get to keep.

      Taking as a starting point, Obama’s concern about “unelected judges on the Supreme Court,” I don’t remember electing Malia Obama for any office, so why should we, the taxpayers foot the bill for a 13-year old’s spring break vacation in Mexico, where the State Dept said we, the people should not travel? Does she really travel with an entourage of 25 Secret Service agents and an unknown number of federales ? How long of a spring break do they get at Friends’ School–10 days in Mexico and then off to the Dakotas and Las Vegas(another place that Obama has said many times, we should not visit)? Did we really need or could we afford a $265,000 trip to Dayton with PM Cameron to watch a play-in game for the NCAA bball tournament?(Probably the most expensive junk food trip in the history of the world!)
      The whole scenario reminds me of the parents who say, “Do as I say, not as I do.”

      That’s just it…. Reagan and both “Dub-ya” and HW Bush took vacations, but it was mainly on their OWN properties which they pay taxes on. They used these places as headquarters to work on and keep going with their executive duties. Obama and wife have been taking advantage from day one. They fly their dog on a separate plane to Hawaii, select the most elaborate stays, many in exotic locations, such as Africa and India. They also have been treating their relatives on taxpayer dollars. I would like to see the figures amounted for all the lavish parties they have thrown with Paul McCartney, etc. Don‘t forget Moochelle’s expensive organic produce shopping trip in D.C! I hope these price tags are brought up by the Romney campaign.

      Kudos to both Larry COnnors and Mike Opelka for making note of the fact that Presidential vacations aren’t spent “vacating.” Unlike the majority of Americans who take vacations and similar to bsiness owners, the President‘s jb goes withhm when he’s on vacation.

      This is why I don’t begrudge Obama or any President a chance to blow off some steam. Now, the cost of said steam blowing… well, that’s a different matter altogether, isn’t it?

      Yes, the man who “preaches about fairness” and how the 1% should pay at least 30% effective tax rate is a first class hypocrite! According to oblamo’s 2010 1040 Income tax return, he made $1,795,614 and owed $416,734 in federal income tax – giving him an effective rate of 23% which may be lower than buffet’s secretary, also! On top of this, obozo itemized $373,289 in deductions (he could have taken the standard deduction of $12,800) and claimed a foreign tax credit of $22,215 from booksales abroad – he did not have to take this credit. Finally, on his Schedule A of itemized deductions, there was no tax prep fee by the CPA firm of Wineburg, Solheim, Howell & Shain – Did they prepare obama’s tax for free??? To have a CPA firm prepare a 59 page tax return for us normal folks, it would cost us in excess of $10,000.

      When obama wants fair taxes for the rich, maybe he should look in the mirror!!!

      We’re running a trillion+ dollar per year debt and Obama thinks that a tax that “might” rake in 5-10 billion would be useful. That is like saying to a guy who wants to buy a pack of gum for a dollar that you’ll give them 5 cents and that they have to spend that 5 cents on trying to buy a snickers bar.

      Billion is not even in the right area code of where we need to be making changes. We need to cut our national BUDGET (not the deficit) down to below 500 billion if we are ever gonna get out of this mess. That means cutting it from last years budget by ~87%. Then we can use the rest of the average 2 trillion we receive in taxes every year to pay down the debt. Of course, this will mean no more welfare for the lazy or ignorant and no more social security checks for those “Americans” that sold out their children’s future and freedom for a little green in their old age instead of properly planning and investing for themselves. It also means that we might have to shoot a few of the gimme‘s that will come out of the woodwork trying to keep their stolen gov’t cash flow. I‘m willing to deal with fewer gov’t services and the complete eradication of quite a few gov’t bureaucracies. As well as shooting anyone who tries to take what I have worked to earn. Are you?

      Then after we take our medicine and the decade of pulling ourselves out of debt is over, we can look back and be glad that we took the chains off of our children’s ankles and wrists.

      I contacted an un-named offical at the White House and was told that the Prez needed to get in as much travel in now because he was going to be a one term president and wouldn’t be able to travel as much after next Jan 20th. Well maybe I didn‘t talk to the White House but I’m guessing I’m pretty close on the travel stuff…anyway..sounds right to me.

      I wonder if Mr. & Mrs Obama has had any thought, about how many meals for Homeless Families, Unemployed Veterans and Americans, the 4 Million Dollars cost, that USA tax payers paid for their Hawaii Vacation., could and would feed. And that is just the beginning.

      If those 2 young girls knew about that money spent on their Family Vacation(s), and think for moment about other kids their age, they would both cry.

      Please Dad & Mom Obama, set a good example for your kids, in everything you do.

      Also, I am greatly disappointed in both of you, for taking advantage of the tax money I paid, to take that Expensive vacation to Hawaii, or the multiple vacations you took at my expense.

      Who do you think you are ? President and First Lady or King and Queen ?

      It would be better if each President would ‘Put Vacations on HOLD” while you have the Privilege to be USA President, to do the job that you have chosen, and have been Elected to do as a True American.

      If you could travel, pay your own costs, without all the cost of Secret Service, Cars, Planes, etc. then go ahead, once or twice a year.

      STOP spending my tax money on your Vacations, Period !!!

      If you STOP and Pay that Money Back, I will say “Thank You”

      I can see how Obama could get a little testy with the reporter and the American people for questioning him on his lavish vacations.

      He did it – America was up for grabs and he took it – he now owns America and he can do anything he see fit!

      He owns the Black vote, the Women vote and the Union Vote – get use to it America – we are in the early stage of a Dictatorship! You got to applaud him – he did what it took to claim America for his own – he picked the shiniest apple from the tree – we no longer need a Senate, a Congress, State Gov. and Legislatures or Judicial System.

      Obama can tell us who is guilty and who is innocent – who goes to jail and who doesn’t – where we work and who doesn’t work. Those that don’t work will not eat and Obama knows who that should be.

      Just remember – God said in the Bible that this would happen and you would be able to see it with your eyes and hear it with you ears.

      On a brighter side – America has one hell of a run as the greatest nation on earth – it was good will it lasted – I will gladly tell grand kids what America was like.

      The truth is … most of us wouldn’t mind paying more taxes if it were spent responsibly. But Washington has been anything BUT responsible with our money, so I don’t want to pay anymore.

      We ALL know the $4-5 billion Obama speaks of won‘t go where it’s needed. They‘ll hand it over to their political buddies so they’ll keep voting them in office, or pay for lavish gov’t excursions (like GAS), or send it overseas to our enemies. TEA!!!!

      It’s funny because when I visited the White House for a tour, I jokingly told the secret service agent at the gate as I left that I would be moving in in just a couple of years. They love America, would die for their president, but most of them don’t like him. I imagine that they see the same thing that the average American does: A president that cares nothing for his people and is so far out of touch that he just doesn’t get it. And when he is confronted about it he just ignores it and changes the subject or blames somebody else…

      He says if we are going to deal seriously with our debt we have to cut programs. Then when asked how much the Buffett rule will bring in he says 5 to 10 Billion dollars and starts naming ways to spend ALL OF IT!!!! So how does that reduce the 15+ Trillion Dollar deficit? He tried to say something to please everyone in 10 seconds no matter how contradictory several of those things were! I’m hoping for an Alien Abduction! He needs serious probing!

      Obama is so out of touch with the people of the US and the struggles we all face today. Obama has no clue of the insensitivity problem he has when he waste so much money on luxury vacations.
      There is no comparisons between Obama taking another expensive exotic vacation and past presidents like Reagan and Bush flying to their personal home for a few days rest. We don’t begrudge the presidents going home for a rest but to go to Africa for safaris, golfing in Hawaii and staying at 5 star hotels(BECAUSE OBAMA HAS NO RELATIVES LIVING IN HAWAII OR A HOME THERE) and dining, visiting the Taj Mahal all while we Americans CAN’T AFFORD THE GAS TO GO TO A NEARBY VACATION SPOT.
      It‘s like Obama is rubbing it in our face that we can’t afford to get away but even though we pay for his expenses we can afford for him and his family and friends to go anywhere and the sky’s the limit.
      AFTER ALL OBAMA DOES NOT HAVE TO STAY WITHIN A BUDGET THAT DOES NOT EXIST.

      Milchelle, the girls, her mother and her retinue travel on one plane tieh support aircraft to transport her groud transport and escort vehicle. Sweet Old Barack travels inb another aircraft and requires his support aircraft to carry the beast and its support vehicles.

I also do not recall sending a 13 year old on a school trip to another country with 25 SS agents or listing the kids as senior advisors as Ms Obama did on the Africa trip. You will have to provide hard numbers to convince me that in 3 years he has not incurred more travel cost than any other president.

      How will BO and MO survive without AirForce 1, 2,and 3..
      Country would save BILLIONS if they put these in the
      Hanger.. I’d like to send My 13 year old Daughter to Mexico
      for Spring Break, IF I had a 737 and 25 Secret Service Agents
      GAWD !!! These ROYALS are completely out of TOUCH…….
