Obama Cracks Jobs Joke: ‘Shovel-Ready Was Not as Shovel-Ready as We Expected’

Shovel-ready jobs were supposed to be a staple of Obama’s Recovery Act. It was a big justification for spending the money involved in the legislation. But soon after using the phrase to sell his recovery plan, word started leaking out there there was no such thing as a shovel-ready job. Obama himself admitted that.

So maybe it’s not surprising that today, Obama once again backpedaled on the shovel-ready mantra. Fox Nation reports:

President Obama’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness met today in Durham, NC at Cree Inc., a company that manufactures energy-efficient LED lighting. One of the Council’s recommendations to President Obama was to streamline the federal permit process for construction and infrastructure projects. It was explained to Obama that the permitting process can delay projects for “months to years … and in many cases even cause projects to be abandoned … I’m sure that when you implemented the Recovery Act your staff briefed you on many of these challenges.” At this point, Obama smiled and interjected, “Shovel-ready was not as … uh .. shovel-ready as we expected.” The Council, led by GE’s Jeffrey Immelt, erupted in laughter.

What may be surprising is that it’s now so obvious the program has failed that the president is willing to joke about it.

    The ONLY joke I see is that no good S-O-B. When is something going to be done about the ‘FUNNY MAN”? He acts like he doesn’t have a clue, but this is what obama intended to do all along….DESTROY AMERICA. Good job a$$ wipe.

    That is exactly the type of job left.a one that needs a shovel. The recent upsurge in employment was mainly fast food minimum wage jobs. I am fearing and waiting for Moody’s or Standard and Poor downgrade the current rating of triple A plus to something as bad as Greece which is CCC, a category that investors pull out their money.
    Another article compared our economy akin to that of Greece. If so watch the dollar turn to dust, our standing in the UN and as a good trader vanish and our relevance upon the world drop, all thanks to Obama

      Shovel Ready BIG JOKE. I am a highway commissioner in the Chicago Area (Republican) and I applied for stimulus money to build a bridge. Everything was ready all we needed was some money. The Democrat controlled State Legislature gave stimulus money to Fermi Lab and their good friend Congressman Foster who was employed there.
      I had lunch with one of the buyers from the Lab and he laughed and said they got money and spent it on office improvements, new lap top computers, furniture, and much misc. The bridge is built and no stimulus money has arrived yet.
      I wonder were those lucky O’Bama bucks come from? Oh we sent them as tax money.
      Now Jan Schakowsky wants more money for Illinois to do what build bridges.

Is “Foot in his Mouth” Biden doing any sort of follow-up to see how much bang they got for their buck or is he too busy looking for government waste (a classic oxymoron)?       I work with federal highway money every day. There is no such thing as shovel ready. They could have saved a lot of money if they would have asked someone. ARRA money was squandered on bridges to nowhere and had so much red tape they are still incomplete.
