Obama Defends His Presidency on ‘60 Minutes’: ‘I Didn’t Overpromise’

Obama on 60 Minutes

(The Blaze/AP) With rivals to challenge him in 2012 berating his performance on a daily basis, President Barack Obama made the case for his re-election Sunday, arguing that it doesn’t matter who the Republicans nominate to run against him because the core philosophy of the GOP candidates is the same and will stand in sharp relief with his own.

“I didn’t overpromise. And I didn’t underestimate how tough this was going to be,” Obama told CBS’s Steve Kroft during a 60 Minutes interview filmed during two sit-downs over the last week, one in Washington and one from Osawatomie Kansas. POLITICO notes the President’s remarks that aired Sunday:

“The vision he offered in 2008 was something he ‘always believed … was a long-term project,’ Obama told Kroft. ‘Reversing a culture here in Washington, dominated by special interests, it was going to take more than a year, it was going to take more than two years. It was going to take more than one term.’

He also acknowledged something he’s rarely said, that it ‘probably takes more than one president’ to affect the kind of change he speaks about, but he, nonetheless, intends to keep fighting for it.

‘I’m a persistent son of a gun. I just stay at it. And I’m just going to keep on staying at it, as long as I’m in this office. And we’re going to get it right. And America will succeed. I am absolutely confident about that.’”

The president tried to write the narrative of how he is different from Republicans, stating that it voters believe in the GOP agenda of lower taxes, including for the wealthy, and weaker regulations then he will lose.

However, Obama doesn‘t think that’s where the American people are going to go, “because I don‘t think the American people believe that based on what they’ve seen before, that’s going to work.”

Obama argued that the two Republicans currently leading in the polls, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, represent the same fundamental set of beliefs.

“The contrast in visions between where I want to take the country and what … where they say they want to take the country is going to be stark,” he said. “And the American people are going to have a good choice and it’s going to be a good debate.”

He rejected questioner Steve Kroft’s suggestion that the public was judging him on his performance as president. “I’m being judged against the ideal,” he said. “Joe Biden has a good expression. He says, `Don’t judge me against the Almighty, judge me against the alternative.’”

Obama predicted the fight to the Republican nomination won’t be resolved quickly. “I think that they will be going at it for a while,” he said.

He described both of the top GOP candidates, Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney, as political fixtures.

Of Gingrich he said: “He‘s somebody who’s been around a long time, and is good on TV, is good in debates.”

“But Mitt Romney has shown himself to be somebody who’s … who’s good at politics, as well,” he said. “He’s had a lot of practice at it.”

Obama is counting on voters giving him credit for avoiding a second Great Depression, bailing out the auto industry and passing a signature health care law even while acknowledging that the public is hardly satisfied with the direction of the country.

He also listed such achievements as ending the Pentagon’s policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” for gay service members and the elimination of Osama bin Laden and other top al Qaida leaders.

“But when it comes to the economy, we’ve got a lot more work to do,” he conceded.

He rejected Republican criticism that his economic policies amount to class warfare, saying he is simply trying to restore an “American deal” that focuses on building a strong middle class.

In a major speech in Osawatomie, Kan., this week, Obama argued that even before the recent recession hit, Americans at the top of the income scale grew wealthier while others struggled and racked up debt. He also has called for spending on jobs initiatives and for an extension of a payroll tax cut that would be paid for by increasing taxes on taxpayers who make $1 million or more.

“There are going to be people who say, `This is the socialist Obama and he’s come out of the closet,’” Obama said.

But he added: “The problem is that our politics has gotten to the point, where we can’t have an honest conversation about the greatest income inequality since the 1920s. And we can’t have an honest conversation about the irresponsibility that resulted in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, without somebody saying that somehow we’re being divisive.”

My wife was proud of me for not smashing the TV last night. The guy Obama is nothing but pure deception. I love what Adam Carolla said, “I‘m already paying the taxes equivalent to what 48 waitresses pay and I can make a pretty good argument as to why I shouldn’t have to pay the taxes of 51 waitresses” That’s paraphrased there, but he’s exactly on target! The rich already DO pay their fair share:

Does anyone really believe that he will go quietly into the night come 11/2012? BHO base of thugs has yet to really stir it up to help bring the top down. He is not going anywhere also because we on the Right side of things are screwing ourselves royally with a bunch of candidates neither fit for office. We will hand BHO another term some of which will be our own doings.

CHIEFGEORGE…I have similar suspicions. After Obama has been expelled in 2012, he will proceed to line his pockets by exploiting his tenure as president. After that he will do the only thing he knows how to do…community organizing. He will work to begin putting far left operatives into the government using the legitimacy of the president’s office to stealth these radicals into power. We must remain vigiliant..The American people made a grave error by electing this man he is a contaminant that will hurt America for a long time. We must remain vigilant.

When will the government stop taxing and spending more than its FAIR SHARE?

The rich have to justify keeping what is theirs, but the government and the entitled don‘t have to justify taking what is someone else’s.

Then, the full extent of the hideous truth about the terrible things, including the deliberate sell-out of our country by this vindictive sociopath and his cronies, along with their depraved indifference to the intense suffering they have caused the American people, will come out. There will be such outrage that the Secret Service will tell Obama that they do not think they can protect him in this country and it is best that he and his family go into seclusion to an unknown destination. Since he likes warm weather and the beach so much, I was thinking Gitmo would be a good choice for him and Michelle.

He learned that from studying the American political system, he also learned how the race card can be played especially if one of his race ever made to the oval office, he learned lots before he ever entered Harvard! @phil65 – I concur, having served over 24 years in the military I have had the honor of serving under the command of some very sound and very intelligent leaders. Obama comes across as very guarded and manufactured, He just doesn’t seem authentic. I also notice that he seems off balance and confused when he isn’t getting softball questions. Only recently the mainstream media has starte asking more substantive questions but they still give him a pass on a ton of issues. For instance how can he call waterboarding (which US troops experience in SERE training) torture while at the same time being in favor of partial birth abortio and not saving a child that survives an abortion? Only a truly delusional person could hold both positions simultaneously and only an arrogant narcissist could proudly defend both at the same time. If Obama is so intelligent why doesn’t he release his college transcripts? Barack Obama has not released transcripts for his grades from Occidental College, Columbia University and Harvard Law. He has also not released his SAT and LSATscores. Lets be realistic here, if Obama’s grades were outstanding logically he would want them released.

If he wins the popular vote as well, I don;t think it will be quite as bad…..maybe. If there is trouble, which side will the military come down on? Or will they split likr they did in the civil war. Either way, I think everyone should get some info on one of thier state militias. They are not all racist and nazi. Most of them are good moral conswrvatives that want to be prepared. They have connections all over the country and if you belong tio them they will heko you all they can when tough times come. They need military support, financial support, and help with logistics. Link up with a couple of them, go to thier meetings and see what you think. There are a number of them in every state and are easy to find. We’re going to need someone.

I keep hearing how intelligent he is, I can’t for the life of me figure out where the hell that someone would come to that conclusion. When the man goes off prompter he wouldn’t pass my college freshman speech class. He forces companies to work with one hand behind their back, ship more jobs out of the country, stop companies from making progress like Boeing and the pipeline up north and drilling in the Gulf. He is purposely redrawing what has made this country great by making us a third rate nation. He will get his dream of a new America through his next term. In his second term he will utterly gut this country. He’ll have nothing to loose then.

“It’s going to take me longer than one term to entirely destroy the America we grew up with”….for the rest of us, the America we all know and love! If Ron Paul’s recent reallocating of his financial assets mean anything, they could mean he is positioning himself for a 3rd party run, which would insure the re-election of this obamanation! May his soul rot in hell!

We need to be praying for our Nation and our leaders, but first we need to ask for forgiveness of our sins. We have all come short. We are all responsible for the condition we find ourselves in. We can blame others or we can face our own failings and take responsibility. One man did not get us here. Let us all look toward Heaven. God Bless all and Merry Christmas….:)

I hope that everybody that can walk or crawl goes out and votes. We can’t afford another four years of this man. Greece comes to mind. The only difference is, we don’t have anybody to bail us out. Maybe Calderone can pay us back what we paid out for these illegals in this Country.

Please support Gov Rick Perry for President…a conservative AND a veteran..GOD BLESS
      http://www.rickperry.org/

      Gov. Rick Perry…

“The idea this president now, with Iran getting one of our predator drones in their possession, and he had opportunities — he had two choices. Actually, he had three. He chose the worse. And those two opportunities he had was to either retrieve that drone or to destroy it. And he did the worst of the three. And he did absolutely nothing. And the Russians and the Chinese will have our highly technical equipment now. This president IS the problem,” Perry said at the ABC News debate in Des Moines, Iowa

Your right, he needs four more years without having to worry about re-election to bring down this country. We have not seen anything yet. Four years of unbridled Marxist policy awaits us. Are you listening?
I‘m not convinced that if O does not win by hook or crook that he won’t seize power as a dictator. He is so close to changing this country, that I can’t see him stepping aside. The question I have is what will be the military’s response to orders? Will they be duped into seizing control for him?

He’s not just a socialist; he’s a full-blown marxist and he’s never been in the closet to those willing to look at him honestly from the beginning. Those who still support him are either part of the problem….or simpletons.
Four more years of him and we are toast.

Actually, we are already lost. It’s guns and ammo time, come join us in Texas.

We will be the new Switzerland, all armed to the teeth. Tidbit; Switzerland was able to keep it’s sovereignty by ensuring that their people were ALL armed and ready (look for that one in any high school history book, this key piece of info will be missing)

We ARE all socialist now, and do not have the guts to take this country back by force, and we are now unable to take it back politically, as the debt is unsustainable and promises have been made that cannot be kept without converting slowly into a socialist Russia type country.

I’ve been thinking the same thing. I wonder how long it will take for his nose to grow long enough to start skewing the lamestream media at one of his “wonderful” speeches? Seriously, I’m beginning to think that all Obama has to do is show up, not say a word, and start lighting his farts – the media will think he’s reciting poetry.

“The problem is that our politics has gotten to the point, where we can’t have an honest conversation about the greatest income inequality since the 1920s. And we can’t have an honest conversation about the irresponsibility that resulted in the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, without somebody saying that somehow we’re being divisive.”

—THEREFORE– we’ve got to suspend these pesky elections to get america out of this crisis.

He right we can’t have an honest conversation because that would mean Democrats admitting that Bill Clinton SUNK THE ECONOMY with his adtion to the grahm leach bailey act of 1999. It would mean that Dems. would have to admit that they blocked needed regulation proposed by bush because they wanted to get re-elected more than fixing the housing market.
