Obama Drops Debt Bomb: ‘The American People Are Sold’ on My Debt Proposal

During his press conference today on the debt ceiling debate, President Obama dropped a whopper. According to him, 80 percent of American’s are “sold” on his debt deal:

“The bottom line is that this is not an issue of salesmanship to the American people, the American people are sold. The American people are sold, I just want to repeat this. … You have 80% of the American people who support a balanced approach. 80% of the American people support an approach that includes revenues and includes cuts. So, the notion that somehow the American people aren’t sold is not the problem. The problem is members of Congress are dug in ideologically into various positions because they boxed themselves in with previous statements. And, so this is not a matter of the American people knowing what the right thing to do is,  it’s a matter of Congress doing the right thing and reflecting the will of the American people. And if we do that, we will have solved this problem.”

The exchange happened between Obama and NBC’s Chuck Todd, and resulted in a visibly frustrated Obama seemingly scolding the NBC reporter for challenging the notion of support:

It‘s unclear where exactly he’s getting his 80 percent figure from.

Throughout the news conference, Obama stuck to his position that a debt deal must include raising “revenues” — his euphemistic term for increasing taxes. According to him, any proposal that doesn‘t include that isn’t serious:

That certainly is not what Republicans have in mind, which may be why the New York Times characterized the press conference as Obama digging in his heels rather than reaching out an olive branch:

But Mr. Obama did not appear to view the news conference as a fresh opportunity to convince Republican lawmakers on a specific deal.

Rather, the president appeared to be preparing for an ongoing debate on the issues of debt, spending and taxes during next year’s presidential election.

“What the American people are paying attention to is who seems to be trying to get something done,” he told reporters.

That message is certain to be a key part of Mr. Obama’s re-election campaign as he presents himself as the adult in a room full of squabbling children. Aides hope his efforts to reach a deal during the debt debate — even if unsuccessful — will reinforce that image.

“There may be some movement, some possibility, some interest, to just get something more than just the bare minimum. We have enough time to do a big deal,” he said. “But in order to do that, we have got to get started now.”

Lawmakers have until August 2 to reach a deal on the the debt ceiling.

The Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza takes a closer look at the polling numbers:

A Gallup poll this week showed that just 20 percent of Americans – including 26 percent of Republicans – say the deficit should be reduced solely through spending cuts. This leaves 80 percent of all Americans who don’t rule out tax increases. (Important note: Some were undecided and 4 percent said only to use tax increases, so the actual number who support using both spending cuts and tax increases is actually less than 70 percent.)

Quinnipiac University put those ruling out tax increases at 25 percent overall, including 48 percent of Republicans — much worse numbers for Obama’s argument…

Nearly one-third of people (30 percent) say they want a deal that is mostly spending cuts with some tax increases, while another 32 percent say the plan should be balanced equally between tax increases and spending cuts. Only 11 percent say the deal should be mostly or solely tax increases.

So saying that 80 percent of Americans support a “balanced approach” may be over-stating things. The Gallup poll actually shows 50 percent of Americans say either no tax increases or that tax increases should be the smaller part of the package.

    When hear this man spew these outright lies and then to be totally unchallenged afterwords as he was not makes me literally steam from my freaking ears and then not a single one of these propagandists has the nads or even ONE ball to say to him “wouldn‘t this debt crisis be totally alleviated if Obama care was shelved since we cannot obviously afford another government safety net Mr O’LieBama?

    Not a single one and the hole in the deficit that needs to be plugged ironically matched that couple trillion dollars that this thing will cost on paper which means it‘ll be tens of trillions before it’s even doing a thing. And the only thing it’s doing right now is creating an exodus of good AMERICAN doctors which leaves the ill, elderly and disabled in the hands of immigrants who can’t even pronounce half the diseases they treat not cure in coherent English.

    And I know, I’m a 12 year MS patient and these doctors are like talking to a freaking wall nowadays. Well intentioned, perhaps but not enough to learn our language enough to carry on a cogent conversation, and their bedside manner is barely fit for camels.

When I had a stroke a few years back, the attending TEAM looked and acted like the “VILLIAGE PEOPLE” far more than Medical Professionals they were supposed to be. I have standing orders now with my family, to NEVER take me to a Hospital again, but instead bring me my Smith&Wesson and help me get it in my mouth., and the hammer back.

      While I might agree with you that that particular subject has received less attention than it deserves, your comment is completely non-germane to both the comment you are replying to and the piece. Unfortunately, the blaze does not offer any forum for user to contribute non-comment pieces. However, at least have something relevant to add to the current subject.

      First off it‘s not his job and he hasn’t the power to set forth a budget. The Constitution is clear Congress sets forth the budget and he can either approve it or disapprove it and send it back to the congress to adress the issues he has with it. What is so damning to his party is that they would agree to whatever he put forth as a budget so Republican are going to him instead of handling it in the house because his party so lock step with whatever he says.
      Secondly WHAT BUDGET? Obama hasn’t even put forth anything that resembles a budget he has made statements about a budget but he has nothing in writing. He wants Republican to raise the debt ceiling on his word that he’ll help them make cuts and balalnce the budget….
      Thirdly how can the Republicans take the word of a man that has lied about making cuts to them once already. Or even a man that would come out and say 80% of America agrees with his budget when there is no budget and poll after poll that says the opposite. He‘s been proven a liar time after time even using his mother’s death in a lie to push OBAMACARE.
      This is no President he’s a Jester.

Just like the debt limit meetings. He should have had this done months ago. Boehner tried and tried to get him to work on the debt ceiling back in January, but to no avail.       Republicans in Washington are attempting to negotiate with the president and the Democrats on raising the debt ceiling. Why bother? Any sane adult will tell them: it is impossible to negotiate with a crazy person. It‘s obvious to every rational American that most of today’s Democrats are crazy.
      Only a crazy person would insist that we raise taxes in a recession.
      Only a crazy person would tell us that Social Security is just fine.
      Only a crazy person believes that people won’t vote based on the unemployment rate.

      Obama is only energized by the crowds and the adulation of the campaign trail — not the adult business of managing our country. So Republicans have a tremendous opportunity: if the president will not agree to the sorts of fundamental reforms that are required to truly end the crisis, then the correct course of action is to wage a war of attrition against the president on a personal level, one designed to besiege him in the White House and then to break him on a psychological level.

      Of course, you have to remember that you are dealing with a crazy person!

      Well, guess what? I’ve come up with the solution of “raising revenues” so often lauded by the Prez who wants that as key to a deal on the debt. Maybe if the House would cave in and let Obama raise revenues by increasing taxes on his salary and that of congress and of course by all 2+million federal workers. That may raise the trillion we need.

      Though I diligently try NOT to tune in for his speeches because he ALWAYS avoids the truth, we must remember that his goal for America IS being accomplished. This Administration under his leadership is destroying our economy INTENTIONALLY. But, President Obama cannot voice it to the people lest the 80% he speaks of will RISE UP AGAINST IT.       It would be nice to hear a journalist ask the following question, “As we see more EU states adopt a flat tax system, why do you think they are adopting such systems and are you willing to adopt a flat tax system?
      Unfortunately for the time being this is a question that will not be asked, but maybe during the debates next year. One can only hope.
      Here are a few things that I believe will fix the majority of the problems: Abolishing all pork spending, no Fed money to the states, flat tax, no party system, and no salary for the President, Congress and Senate. They are there to serve us!

      Are you talking about the Huff Po spin piece? “The suggestion that Sept. 11 victims also may have been were targeted surfaced Monday in the Mirror, a British competitor of News Corp.’s The Sun. The newspaper quoted an anonymous source as saying an unidentified American investigator had rejected approaches from unidentified journalists who showed a particular interest in British victims.”

      Let’s see we have a competitor paper with an anonymous source…..Yup the liberals will be all over this. The Blaze doesn’t carry stories without facts, they are not HuffPo.

He is trying to save social security, Medicaid and Medicare, and make certain there are no death panels in his health plan while he is still in office. Notice he keeps telling seniors they will not be receiving their social security checks if the nasty Republicans win. He’s trying to push most of the elderly public into heart failure.       Obama has a terrible temper, as well as being a liar and he is not winning anymore and Americans aren’t in agreement with him, except for a few liberal groups. He and his team thought Americans were too stupid, lazy, and don’t pay attention to what government is doing. He wants to Control Us and you do that by controlling every aspect in our lives, medical, gun control, food control, land grabs, oil control, news media, lack of jobs and destroy the economy, education of our children, religion, and recently feels fat children should be away from their parents if the children don’t slim down.

I don’t know why no one has come forward to impeach him when we are close to economic collapse because of Obama. We have to stop him from ripping this country apart and continue to stand up for ourselves.

On the video at 2:41 the FOX scroller at the bottom shows this “ FBI Probing if News Corp tried hacking Sept 11 victim phones” and at 2:57 the scroller shows “News Corp will apologize in all national papers for UK hacking scandal”. For you to say FOX does not report on this issue is false. You can also see coverage on the news programs featured on FOX. You should be focusing on the discussion at hand which is an attempt to keep government small, if your sign on name reflects your values.

      That is true about Dr.We have a Dr. leaving for a more lucrative position as a teacher. but we are in a small town. I cannot possibly get along without medicare and Soc.Sec. We paid in for the next to retire just like the last generation already paid in for us. Now the Govt. wants to take it away because they used the money for other things. Probably for resources the illegals use.I dont see how they can discriminate against the elders this way.

      Your right. We have a Dr leaving to get a more lucrative job as a teacher.Just like most elderly I will not survive witha cut in my SS check. I use nearly the whole thing on living day to day. I cannot survive without medicare help me with Dr. visits and Drugs.We seniors now get SS because the people before us paid into SS for us, just lie we paid into it for those ahead of us. The govt. stole the money and used it for other things probably the resources to help illegals.They didnt borrow it they stole it. Thats why they took it out of safekeeping and put it in the general fund. So it could be used. Now Ryan and others call it an entitlement and want to take it away.Are we that stupid.??

      With ~50% of the population not paying taxes, ~50% dependent on govt for a check, ~40 mil depending on food stamps, etc. its hard to dismiss we’ve passed a tipping point. Too many of us in the dreaded, productive, private sector were on the sidelines too long – you know, working +60 hours a week, raising families, running businesses, busting butt to improve our properties, scraping for our own retirement savings, and paying a boatload of taxes because we were bludgeoned into submission that the poor ole victims of our whiteness deserved a “hand up” to become productive members of society. Blarney Frank-eater and Chris Dodo told us banks were racist despite the highest home ownership in history andassing the “subprime” legislation. We went along or didn’t have the energy to fight for what our gut told us was askew. And then the music stopped, just like our guts had anxiously anticipated would happen. Our jobs, home equity, and 401ks tanked. Chairman O’s solution? Give a $gazzilion more borrowed govt cash to people and businesses I don’t work for or know (not a union guy). Now its gone and unemployment and despair are higher. And those “disadvantaged communities” I/we funded for 5 decades? They’re more ignorant, angry, racist, entitled, numeric, and unemployable than at any time. Yep, I’m an “angry white middle aged man” and I know Obama, Holder, Reid, Pelosi, Rangel, Jackson Jr. etc. chortle with glee. Hopefully enough wakeup and vote for conservative dominanc

      Maybe just one time, Obama would explain what his budget cut proposal really is. He has never said which programs he would cut and who’s taxes he would raise. The rich won’t get him enough money and that leaves everybody else to be taxed. That is what always happens when the Dems raise taxes. If the Dumbocrats would pay attention to Paul Ryan’s budget they would understand that no changes to Social security or Medicare would affect seniors already on the programs. And yes Social Security is an ENTITLEMENT PROGRAM because it is based on a Ponzi Scheme dreamed up by liberals in the 1940‘s so they wouldn’t have to be responsible for their own retirement. Facts show seniors on these programs will take more out than they ever put in within 12 years of retiring. That’s because when these Ponzi schemes were enacted people rarely lived past 70 years old so they would only collect for about 8 years. I know seniors don‘t want to hear it but the working people are tired of paying for your retirement because we know these programs won’t be around when we are seniors. Maybe you should have planned ahead instead of relying on someone else for your retirement.

I’m unfortunate enough to live where the nurses and aids at the hospital are black and they all graduated from the local junior college. They are lazy, arrogant and racist. I drive 50 miles to the nearest hospital to avoid the one in my home town. It’s not going to get better as long as Obama is president.

      Yes,you are right to be fearful re losing Docs, and wat times, Death Panels etc. I am in the Cdn Hellcare system, and it SUCKS! I could go on for hours re my own personal horror stories re wait times,lack of Docs etc. You mention you have MS,and you have my sincere sympathy. Have you ever heard of Doctor Zamboni,and his relatively simple treatment re stints to expand blood veins etc to from the brain?
      Don’t want to give you false hope, but it looks very promising, and it is being tested by AMA etc.
      I do have suspicions though the Pharma lobby may delay/interfere as they will lose billions in drugs etc, if this procedure is approved. Google Dr. Zamboni. I wll pray for you.

      WHY IN THE HELL would we implement YET ANOTHER in this situation?

      Now, as for the other spending – there is AT LEAST 10% WASTE in EVERY government program/department. SO, cut 10% ACROSS THE BOARD – leave it to each department head to cut his own budget accordingly.

      Government employees got a QUADRUPLE RAISE when obama came into office – just as we lost all our jobs and out homes – THEY GOT RICHER ! – ROLL BACK ALL THOSE RAISES!!!

      Ryan proposed a plan – it was dismissed… OUTRIGHT!!!

      one man progressive wrecking crew: My husband and I just heard Senator Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) say that on Monday he puts out a new report on how to cut spending $9 TRILLION, and it’s doable.
      I have said many times on this website that I really feel that Senator Coburn would be an awesome Presidential candidate on the Republican ticket. I absolutely cannot believe that he is overlooked. He has a degree in accounting, and knows how to grow a business. Added to that he is a medical doctor. Brilliant man. Brings to our attention repeatedly the waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government. If we actually cut spending in the federal government like he suggests, we would not be talking about raising the debt ceiling in the first place!

      I am not for tax increases but when the responsible, constitutional observing adults get control of this government again, I’ll be the first to support a total tax overhaul. Two things for me are 1. a much simpler means and 2. more total taxpayers. Sorry, but when did we become a country where almost 50% of the population became freeloaders, paying no fed income taxes. How is that good for the republic? It plays right into the liberal’s hands. Class warfare. Victims vs. the victimizers. The DimoRats become the pimps for the unproductive “victims” taking from the productive in return for votes. No American is entitled to be a freeloader. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want more tax revenue, I want less and a smaller government, but that won’t happen until more Americans truly feel “shared sacrifice” and decide less sacrifice is better. The more taxpayers we get the more responsible patriots and engaged, productive citizens we’ll have. Nothing gets even the most ignorant persons attention like money confiscated from your paycheck.

      Unfortunately what the American people do not realize is:

      1. Obama placed Czars in office that have more power then Congress.
      2. Because our Congress did not have the courage to live up to their oath of office and start charges for impeachment when Obama started over riding our Constitution; which is an impeachable offense.
      3. With his blatant use of the power of the Executive Order.

      Our Congress is now no more then window dressing. It is too late to impeach Obama. He is now able to get by with his lies and do what ever else he wants to do because the bottom line is, we are now living under Tyranny and Dictatorship comes next.

      Obama is not delusional, he is devious. Think about it.

      You have to understand what he meant by that 80%. He meant 80% of what HE considers the “American people”. In Obama‘s and other Progressive’s minds, anyone who’s NOT a Liberal/Progressive, big-government, nanny-state Socialist/Communist, is NOT an “American”.

      All the TEA Party members and other Libertarian-leaning and Conservative people, in Obama‘s and the other Progressive’s minds, are NOT true Americans, and so their views and opinions MUST be dismissed.
