Obama Forgets Coast Guard in List of Military Branches

Politico:

President Obama needed a little help from the troops in Afghanistan on Friday as he thanked the military branches for their work but forgot to mention the Coast Guard.

“I think we’ve got every service here tonight,” Obama said at Bagram Air Base. He then called on the branches as their members cheered: “We’ve got Army. We’ve got Navy. We’ve got Air Force. I think we may have a few Marines around, too.”

Obama continued, “And a whole lot of folks from the 101st Airborne Division, the Screaming Eagles.”

Moving to his remarks, Obama said, “Now, here in Afghanistan …” Then, someone in the crowd shouted out, “Coast Guard!”

“Coast Guard?” Obama repeated. “Is that what I heard?”

The Coast Guard is one of the oldest organizations of the federal government and, until the Navy Department was established in 1798, we served as the nation’s only armed force afloat. They continued to protect the nation throughout our long history and have served proudly in every one of the nation’s conflicts. Their national defense responsibilities remain one of our most important functions even today. In times of peace they operate as part of the Department of Homeland Security, serving as the nation’s front-line agency for enforcing our laws at sea, protecting the marine environment and our vast coastline and ports, and saving life. In times of war, or at the direction of the President, They serve under the Navy Department.

People touted this guy as a great speaker. When he ad-libs (pun works here) he sounds so elementary. He pauses after every 2-3 words, he shouts like a preacher or some might say he sounds like he’s still campaigning. When a speaker sounds like this moron he’s actually trying to sell himself on America, on his audience. His hesitation and confusion in his words is the direct result of repeating to himself in his head what he’s just said in a feeble attempt to see if he sounded dumb. As with his politics he has no direction with his words.

I could never be in active service to this nation and required to be present for this morons appearance and follow orders to clap and smile. I would refuse those orders based upon my belief that this so called leader, this community organizer is in fact destroying our great nation. I never disobeyed an order, not once but if put in that position with this man I would not hesitate to disobey.

This man has no real skill at speaking and those that think he does are simply followers, not self thinkers.

Absolute direspect for the Office of the President and the President himself to accuse him of naming the enemy as our own military. I find “Speak Without Fears” comment to be the comment wof a person who is willing to say anything they can to belittle people even if that person, President Obama, Is not the most qualiffied or competent leader; Simply because “speak Without Fear” can do it behind the vail of anonymity. This kind of rhetorich and distaste Should not be accepted and esspecially not from our side where we have the moral high ground. We know our position is right we need not parse words, but we need to speak the truth and do so boldly,”Before the ultimate victory of the forces of righteousness, some skirmishes will be lost. Even these, however, must leave a record so that the choices before the people are clear and let others do as they will in the face of prophetic counsel. There will also be times, happily, when a minor defeat seems probable, that others will step forward, having been rallied to righteousness by what we do. We will know the joy, on occasion, of having awakened a slumbering majority of the decent people of all races and creeds–a majority which was, till then, unconscious of itself.” God Speed

I agree to a certain degree with your comments about respect for the office. I can respect the office and not the office holder. Having said that, respect is given to someone that has earned it. An individual never gets a pass when it comes to respect not even the President. You deserve respect after you earn it not the other way around.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is a branch of the United States armed forces and one of seven uniformed services. The Coast Guard is a maritime, military, multi-mission service unique among the military branches for having a maritime law enforcement mission (with jurisdiction in both domestic and international waters) and a federal regulatory agency mission as part of its mission set. It operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime, and can be transferred to the Department of the Navy by the President or Congress during time of war.

Founded by Alexander Hamilton as the Revenue Cutter Service on 4 August 1790, it lays claim to being the United States’ oldest continuous seagoing service. As of August 2009, the Coast Guard had approximately 42,000 men and women on active duty, 7,500 reservists, 29,000 auxiliarists, and 7,700 full-time civilian employees.[3]

The Coast Guard’s legal authority differs from the other four armed services and it operates simultaneously under Title 10 of the United States Code and its other organic authorities, e.g., Titles 6, 14, 19, 33, 46, etc. Because of its legal authority, the Coast Guard can conduct military operations under the Department of Defense or directly for the President in accordance with Title 14 USC 1-3.

The Coast Guard’s enduring roles are Maritime Safety, Maritime Security, and Maritime Stewardship. To carry out those roles the Coast Guard has eleven statutory missions as defined in 6 U.S.C. § 468.

The Coast Guard motto is “Semper Paratus”, Latin for “Always Ready” or “Always Prepared”.

      @Chickenlittle sorry wrong.

The coast guard operated originally under the treasury department. It was then switched to operate under the department of transportation up until it was folded into the department of homeland security. It has never been a part of the department of defense except in times of war when it can temporarily be transferred under the jurisdiction of the DoD.

Coast guard actually falls under the DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY. and it IS an official branch of the military. there are 5. and coast guard is one of them. WE get the same benefitys, same pay, same EVERYThing any military gets. hmmm why is that? because we are a branch. We get military orders to go places and do things, we wear a uniform, rendor salute have a chain of command jsut as any branch. WE ARE a military service. in fact, i bet you didn’t know we are a branch off of the navy. I also bet you didn’t know that the marines are ALSO a branch off the navy. In time of way Coast guard falls under the department of the navy, which falls under the department of defense.. We are under the department of homeland security, but follow jurisdiction and guidelines set by the navy.

So if I understand this correctly about the coast guard, they fall into a type of middle ground; answer to civilian authorities and funded by mix of states and fed during peacetime, and used for the civil policing of territorial waters in addition to the rescues and such. Then during a war time need, they can be called up and attached to the department of defense in a matter like the national guard and reservists?

Most of what they do is rescue and law inforcement.Started under the Treasury Department then Transportation and finally Homeland Security. They routinely operate on/in U.S. territory. They can and do fall under command of the POTUS in war time. (so can almost any entity)

I was not trying to insult anyone. If and when the Coast Guard comes under the Dept of Def I’ll change my view. Under most circumstances the missions are too different for this to happen.

The Coast Guard IS part of the military branches. It Falls under the Department of Homeland securty. there are 5 branches of the military, Army, Navy, marines, Air FOrce, and Coast Guard. Coast guard is a branch off the navy. I bet most people didn’t know this. but the marines are in fact a branch off the Navy also. The coast guard is the Longest Going service in history. It has been around before ANY of the other service were. Only thing was Coast guard never got recognition for it and the government overlooked it, as we see in the above video. But now a days it is in fact a branch. It was under the department of transportation up until 9/11/2001 when then it was moved to differnet departments. Yes, the coast guard gets differnet funding but in fact its so much harder for the coast guard that way. We would be better off in the DoD but we’re not. The DoD has so much more money for its services but the DoH does not.

Coast guard IS A MILITARY BRANCH. Protecting the HOMEFRONT from illegal immigrants, drugs, and enforcing Laws. But also so much more.

If you want to get technical, the Coast Guard isn’t considered military. They actually fall under the Department of Transportation. The reason for this is if they were to board foreign ship for lets say drug trafficking, if they were military that would be considered an act of war. The exception however is that during war they can fall under the department of defense, but for the most part its the department of transportation.

One Air Force service member crunched the numbers of the estimated cost for all these “changes” the gay activist President wants done Now –low estimated cost of beginning the process of queering the Military is 40-50 Millions of taxpayer funding. Give me 40-50 Million of somebody’s money and I could buy some protection for all those deployed in harms way –and not just the President and his minions favorite special interest group.

Obviously a member of the Coast Guard hacked Obama’s teleprompter to insure that the Charlatan-in-chief would not burden this good service with platitudes and false, heartless, empty praise. It was equally obvious that the hacker was Coast Guard, because they left the other services to defend themselves, proving that inter-service rivalry is still intact and going strong, good for the hacker!
That being said, perhaps the next time the hackers could have Obama read a rousing rendition of “I’m a Kenyan socialist and I hate America to the core”? Obama is just likely to read it, and it would be the first “true” thing he’s ever said publicly.

As a Marine combat veteran and a member of the NYPD I have alot of respect for the Coast Guard . However since 9-11 they fall under the Department of Homeland Security , are not under DOD and its officers do not rate a salute from members of the other services. Therefore are not considered a branch of our armed forces and the President was correct in not mentioning them.

This post is for CAPTAIN77. IF YOU WANT TO GET TECHNICAL: Actually the coast guard falls under the DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY. The coast guard IS a branch of the military. There are 5. in time of way Coast Guard will fall under the department of the navy, which will fall under the department of defense. So We ARE a branch of the military, we get the same salary as any branch, same benfits, but Less recognition for what we actually do. In Fact, We do so much that the world has no idea about. You just see the small things that obviously the news wants you to see or doesn’t show.

Well, Respectfully of course, this is just for your informatin and everyone’s information. The Coast Guard DOES have to RENDOR a salute to any OFFICER in ANY branch just as any member of any service would. If a Coast Guard member of lower ranking to an officer does not SAlute he can be held accountable just as any service member. In the coast guard, however, it is a little different than the other branches. There is ENLISTED and OFFICERS. Enlisted always salute officers whether be E3 or E9 does not matter. Lower officers example: 01 always salute higher. So to some it up If an army member was a E-8 and army member salute E-8 (not exactly sure) coast guard would not salute because we are only taught that you salute officers. However, over time You learn that it is common courtesy to salute an enlisted member if he is a captain of a ship.

      In Response to CAPTAIN77:

The Coast Guard is a considered military service and serves a very important role in the war on terror. The Coast Guard hasnt been under the department of Transportation since 2002 when the Department of Homeland Security was created. Get your facts straight. Obama is an idiot and he probably thought the Coast Guard was under DOT as well. You would think the CinC would know that the CG is deployed overseas along with the rest of the military, but what would you expect from someone with no military background and his tremendous hatred for the military.
