Obama: Giffords ‘Opened Her Eyes for the First Time’

President Barack Obama announced Wednesday evening that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords “opened her eyes for the first time” since being shot through the head on Saturday as she greeted constituents in a Tucson supermarket parking lot. “She knows we’re here,” Obama told memorial-goers.  “She knows we love her.”

The president capped off a day of visits with Giffords and other injured victims of the shooting massacre being treated at Tucson‘s University Medical Center and visits with the deceased victims’ families by delivering remarks at a memorial rally on the campus of the University of Arizona.  Instead of a somber tone, the crowd gathered for the service was energized and greeted the president and other public servants with cheers, whistles and resounding applause.

The president said that Giffords’ husband allowed him to share the news her recovery with the crowd — news that brought people to their feet amid cheering.

While many have used Saturday’s tragedy to point the finger at their political opponents, President Obama reminded the country that “the forces that divide us are not as strong as those that unite us.”

“We can be better,” Obama said, urging Americans not to use the tragedy to “turn on one another.”  For all of humanity’s imperfections, the president said, “we are full of decency and goodness.” To illustrate his point, Obama thanked a number of individuals who had risked their own lives to save others during Saturday’s horrific shooting which killed six and injured 13 others.

Among those praised by the president congressional intern Daniel Hernandez who received a hero’s ovation from the cheering crowd.  Earlier in the service, Hernandez delivered his own remarks, declining the title of hero and insisting it belongs to individuals like Giffords who dedicate their lives to public service.

The president also spoke about Americans’ duty to honor those who passed away Saturday, namely 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green:

Obama was in his element Wednesday night, feeding off crowd energy and delivering rousing remarks.  Instead of a somber memorial service, the convention center boomed with cheers and applause as the crowd celebrating coming together as Arizonans and Americans.

The event, dubbed “Together we Thrive: Tucson and America,” was organized by the University of Arizona.

Additionally, the House of Representatives voted to pass a resolution honoring the victim‘s of Saturday’s shootings.

This entire thing was a JOKE! It was almost like watching American Idol and feeling embarrassed for the people singing because they were horrible, and thought they were good.(bad example I know, but its the only thing that had comparable emotional feelings) It felt like they were making complete fools out of themselves and just could not help but to bask in the glory and bright lights. It would have set a nice tone if someone on the stage reminded the crowd what just happened in their city just days prior. From the top to the bottom it was a complete dog and pony show. All of the smiles and hand shaking before and after the gig were a shame. There were no tears or somber feelings. If I get gunned down in a mass murder tomorrow I hope that the memorial is a polar opposite of what occurred at the University of Arizona tonight. They just took the death of six people and turned it into a pep rally for the left wing of american politics. I feel horrible for the parents of the young girl, when the cheers went on and on prior to the speakers it made my heart sink.

I, as an Arizonian, am appalled at the behavior of those attending this “memorial”. This was supposed to be a solemn and respectful event, however; it turned to be as active and as boisterous as a campaign stop in 2008. I was completely shocked. Of course the pundits will have “thrills” o’ plenty up parts of their bodies tomorrow. That is just it, itside of rising to the moment like a leader, Palin gave a snide speech, that was self serving, she used language that was ill-advised at best.

She proved her critics correct, that she is nothing but pretty face with no substance underneath.

Obama, gave a speech that was uplifting and respectful, Palin gave a speech that was attempting to add her name to the list of victims.

Yes, I fear that this seals him for 2012. The reality is that any president giving a reasonably good speech tonight would have become instantly more popular.

However, I actually gained some new and genuine respect for Napolitano. I found her delivery and posture humble and appropriate. It was something I felt, too.

The audience’s extremely tepid response to Gov. Brewer was embarrassing and sad, especially as contrasted with former gov. Napolitano’s roaring welcome.

When he got introduced I was watching his face very closely and for a second there, after he stood up, there was a little look of disgust there. It was when the crowd was cheering like they were at a football game instead of a memorial. Of course then the smug self centered self absorbed BO was back. I wonder if he asked the husband of Giffords if he could give the news that she opened her eyes so he could have a feather in his cap.

March 25, 2010 – Washington Post reports “Lawmakers concerned as health-care overhaul foes resort to violence”

      http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/24/AR2010032402122.html

Own it guys, this is you and your “Second Amendment remedies.” Do something to calm things down.

The vandalism began last weekend, when the House debated the health bill for final passage. In Wichita, someone broke the window of a county Democratic Party headquarters with a brick that had “No to Obama” and “No ObamyCare” written on it. Lyndsey Stauble, executive director of the Sedgwick County Democratic Party, said she went to work Saturday morning to clean up the shattered glass around her desk.

“It was surprising and alarming to know that people, when they have so many opportunities for expression in this country, that somebody would resort to a brick,” Stauble said.

Over the next 24 hours, thrown bricks shattered the glass doors and windows of party headquarters from Rochester, N.Y., to Cincinnati. A propane gas line at the Charlottesville home of Rep. Tom Perriello’s brother was severed Tuesday after a self-identified “tea party” activist posted what he believed to be the Virginia Democrat’s address on a Web site and urged opponents to “drop by” to convey their opposition to his yes vote on the health bill.

A brick was thrown through the Niagara Falls district office of Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-N.Y.), who also received a threatening voice-mail message referring to sniper attacks. The front door to the Tucson district office of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) was shattered. And Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), whose last-minute negotiations to bar federal funding of abortion helped secure the bill’s passage, received a fax with a drawing of a noose and an anonymous voice mail saying: “You’re dead. We know where you live. We’ll get you.”

We must keep the fact that the Repulican judge that was killed that day was there to see Gabby about all of the illegal activity on the border there and how out of hand it has become because Obama, Holder Hillary, Naplotano and Dupnik refuse to protect us by securing the border. Gabby may have been a democrat but she was for securing the border and the judge knew that.

El Barry Soetoro, there is no need for a new world order. All this country needs is people like you to believe in law and order and our Constitution. If you don’t want to worship God, then don’t. Just don’t go around mocking people that do. We once had this understanding in this FREE country until the left started with their crap.

A new world order will be the cause of millions of deaths and we want no part of that. Do you?

I’m posting this here because I wanted to put it on one of the most recent articles in order to reach as many readers as I can…

Just keep in mind that I take total offense at what the University did in putting this “event” together…Who GAVE THEM THEIR ORDERS when arranging the details of this event??? There need to be some answers forthcoming!

“Together We Thrive” was the L O G O !!!!!! Since when did a memorial service require a LOGO??????? I am fuming…I KNEW I didn’t like the tone that was coming over the airwaves, but when I saw a picture of these T shirts, I totally lost it! NOTHING LIKE PUSHING THE “COLLECTIVE” MENTALLY…SOMEONE NEEDS TO CALL THESE PEOPLE OUT ON THIS…I MEAN IT…This is not right America! This is JUST NOT RIGHT!

TUCSON, AZ — Some conservatives are upset over t-shirts bearing the logo “Together We Thrive: Tucson & America” that were handed out to attendees at tonight’s memorial service in the McKale Center on the campus of the University Of Arizona here.

The shirts, which bear the same logo that adorns other items from the event — including press passes, signage and volunteer t-shirts — were placed on many of the seats in the lower sections of the arena when tonight’s capacity crowd walked in.

The University Of Arizona did not immediately respond to requests for more information on the shirts, which are drawing fire in the conservative twitter- and blogosphere tonight. The White House did not respond to a request for comment. A person familiar with the event confirmed the university put the event together, and was responsible for t-shirts, tickets, fliers, etc.

“I’m having a physical reaction to the T-shirts,” Amanda Carpenter, a speech writer for Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) tweeted tonight. “I’m tearing up. This feels wrong.”

(The tweet has since been deleted.)

Other conservatives on Twitter shared in the sentiment. Some have already speculated the shirts were paid for with taxpayer dollars.

Michelle Malkin had earlier raised a rukus about the event’s logo on her blog.

“Isn’t the churning of the instant messaging machine a bit, well, unseemly?” she wrote. “Can’t the Democrat political stage managers give it a break just once?”

Right-wing media star Tammy Bruce had some of the harshest attacks on the event and the crowd here in Tucson. She likened the event to the 2002 funeral for Sen. Paul Wellstone (D-MN), which conservatives at the time claimed was unfairly turned into a political rally by Wellstone’s supporters.

“Massacre Rally Theatre is a complete abomination. Absolutely obscene,” Bruce tweeted Wednesday. “Clinton should be happy, no longer will ‘Wellstone’ be the benchmark.”

      @Jzs
I find it highly amusing that you progs are SO enthralled with Sarah Palin.
In answer to your questions, she is a mere citizen not holding any office, and can speak to whom she chooses. You tube is full of video of CURRENT office holders who avoid speaking. There will be more now that their use of this tragedy is a blatant FAIL. Palin’s response to this tragedy and libelous attacks on her, was more timely and presidential than the bozo in chief, it is to laugh that her very existence tweaks you, her continued success must have the effect of raw fear why else would the vitriol continue ?

I’d love to see her run, if only to rub your nose in it.
To see her WIN, would be a WIN for the Republic.

      click4cheapandeasyweb & cheezwhiz,
Whoever wrote that story got it backwards. Maybe the guy is a relative of the Mexicano who spoke today. I’ve watched the medical updates, and until Tuesday she was still unable to open her eyes. Keep in mind that the bullet penetrated her face just barely above her left eye, and it apparently fractured the eye socket, so she required surgery in that area. I hope her vision was not affected.

Obama did admit it was immediately after he and his gang had left. Phew! I have a renewed respect for Gabby. She knew to wait till the circus had left town — I mean, her room.

Sarah Palin should of been taking notes.

BAM……and just like that Sarah Palin’s video means nothing.
Wait a minute, she does have to answer for her “blood libel” comment.

The sarcasm from most of the posts here is understandable, probably due to the damage this man has and is inflicting upon our country, through his policies. Can’t say I disagree with most of the comments. However, the crowd’s inappropriate yelling and outbursts, set the tenor for the “Memorial”.
But, since it’s their community which has been effected so terribly, I guess they can react any way they wish.

I don’t like being cynical, at all. But having witnessed two-plus years of deceit, crass manipulation, outright theft, mendacity, and self-aggrandizement at the cost of our nation’s vitality, I agree.

The “powers and principalities” we’re facing have every advantage of media gloss and clever mass persuasion. God sees all, and knows all. If we are on His side, clinging to His robes – so to speak – we won’t be led astray.

When the camera cut to Obama,as he was being introduced, it seemed to me this is a man who not only expected to hear what was said in the introduction But agreed with the crap about his intellect.
This seemed affirmed by his repeated comments “She opened her eyes.” Now I don’t know if he knew her personally before she got shot–probably not.But the use of her familiar name “Gabby” and the repetition of “She opened her eyes.” It seemed as if he believed his presence in the room(if he was there when she opened her eyes) As if he believed his presence was what caused that event. We will see what the rhetoric is from the left And what laws will be pushed through to protect the politicians -or if one agrees with Cesar Becaria -easier to shoot them. … What infringements on freedom of speech will occur– will prove if he set the tone.

Do we stop to take pause . . . Do we all wonder if there were others that experienced miracles when Obama arrived?

Did the morgue empty? Did doctors lay down their instruments because no longer they were necessary . . . ? Or was it that the rest of the patients were all republicans not worthy of saving . . . Why did He only heal one?

Why isn’t He healing the economy?

Why isn’t He healing the poverty and the racial divide that He claims economic disparity causes? Did your empty bank accounts become filled over night? Perhpas we should check that they were not emptied and given to others?

Why is the world still not at peace?

Why . . . ? Why does He allow the world to go on suffering?

Perhaps he will answer these questions as we move into 2012 . . . perhaps?

I thank God every day that I did not have children and that I don’t have them going through this crazy time in our history. Of course I guess some women were thinking that during our revolution from England and during the second World War. Have a great day and keep thinking straight!

KRYPONITE, I‘m wondering why a religion which you don’t understand bothers you so much?

I would like a direct answer to a couple of questions:-

      1. If Adam and Eve were the FIRST human beings on earth then where did Seth and Cain acquire their wives – WITHOUT them fornicating with their own mother?

      2. If Noah only took two of each animal and only his immediate family – so who reproduced with whom?

Would the word ‘incest’ come to mind??

Don’t criticize other beliefs until you have all the answers about your own!
