Obama: I Cannot Guarantee Social Security Checks Will Be Mailed if Debt Deal Not ReachedAs the clock continues to tick, Republicans and Democrats are still gridlocked in their attempts to reach a comprehensive debt deal. Earlier today, in an interview that will air tonight, President Barack Obama told CBC News’ Scott Pelley that there is no guarantee that Social Security checks will be mailed as planned if the two parties do not reach a deal to raise the debt ceiling by the August 2 deadline. According to CBS News, he said:

“I cannot guarantee that those checks go out…if we haven’t resolved this issue. Because there may simply not be the money in the coffers to do it…this is not just a matter of Social Security checks. These are veterans checks, these are folks on disability and their checks. There are about 70 million checks that go out.”

Last month, Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul took on the president’s notion that keeping the debt ceiling at its current level would cause the U.S. to default. He said:

“If (Democrats) want to spend the money, they need to be honest with the American people and say ‘We’ve got to borrow $2 trillion because that’s what we want to spend,’ ” Paul said. “I don’t want to spend that much money.”

But Paul said he’s not concerned about the potential consequences of keeping the federal debt ceiling at its current limit.

“Our interest payment is about $20 billion a month,” he said. “Our tax revenue is about $200 billion a month, so we’re bringing in (nearly) $200 billion. We’ve got plenty of money to pay our interest.”

This, though, even if entirely valid does not address the payment of entitlements and other government expenditures. According to CNN Money:

Consequently, the government would have to defer 44% of federal spending, a significant portion of the 80 million payments it makes every month, according to a study conducted by the Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank in Washington founded by four former Democratic and Republican Senate majority leaders…

“Handling all payments for important and popular programs (e.g., Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, defense, active duty pay) will quickly become impossible,” the report’s authors noted.

But, CNSNews.com reports that there is more than enough funding to cover entitlement. Specifically, the outlet claims that there is enough to cover the combined costs of interest, Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Veterans Affairs and federal wages for workers (not to mention insurance benefits). This information comes via Daily Treasury Statements published by the U.S. Treasury Department:

Specifically, according to the Daily Treasury Statements, as of the close of business on May 16, the federal government had taken in $1.333454 trillion in tax revenues since the beginning of fiscal 2011. By the close of business on July 7, tax revenues for fiscal 2011 had grown to $1.629630 trillion. Therefore, between May 16 and July 7 the federal government took in a total of $296.176 billion in new tax revenue.

In that same time period, total interest payments on the national debt equaled $14.632 billion.

Thus, the new tax revenue of $296.176 billion the federal government took in between May 16 and July 7 was enough to pay the federal government’s $14.632 billion in interest obligations during that period 20 times over.

The president has been pushing for $4 trillion in a 10-year deficit reduction proposal, but House Speaker John Boehner has told Obama that a smaller deal that falls somewhere between $2 trillion and $2.4 trillion is more realistic. The Huffington Post has more:

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday that Republicans will “do the responsible thing and ensure the government doesn’t default on its obligations,“ but said Democrats and the Obama administration were relying on budget gimmicks to give the ”appearance of serious belt-tightening.”

While both parties claim that they will not allow the U.S. to default on its debts, it is tough to imagine how — considering the rhetoric coming from both sides — and amenable agreement can be forged. The stalemate that is currently overtaking the discussion centers upon major cuts in spending, which Republicans are requesting. Democrats refuse cuts to entitlement programs like Medicare, while Republicans refuse to raise taxes.

When it comes to the public’s perception, a majority — 47 percent — say that they are more concerned with the ramifications that come along with raising the debt ceiling, while 42 percent of the nation sees a greater risk in not raising the limit. These results come from a poll that was conducted last week by The Washington Post and the Pew Research Center.

      The president gets to decide who gets paid. There is enough money coming in to pay social security, all soldiers and veterans, and the interest on the debt. If there is anybody who doesn’t receive their SS benefits it is because Obama decided to be a dick again.

      Hummm, let’s see, around 70 million people gets checks every month.
      BIG mistake giving us the “real” numbers.

      OK, while we are talking debt and cielings and bailouts, how about this:

      Give these 70 million a million dollars each as buyout of their social security etc “contracts”
      That’s all they will get -EVER, so use it wisely, it should last till ya croak.
      Do that with the next years batch until all the “boomers” are paid out.

      Disband the social security tax, the offices and the workers.
      Same with all the welfare “programs” Pay ‘em off get them gone.

      install a flat tax of 10% on all working people for govt “revenue”
      Require that they save another 10% for their retirement. 401K roth etc SOMETHING THEY control.
      15% flat tax on all corporate income & earnings.
      5% consumption tax on all sales.

      Pay the debt off, required balanced budget from now till doomsday.
      once it’s paid off, lower taxes by 5% across the board.

      Smaller govt, instant millionairs, fair taxes, and I bet it don’t add up to the 4 trillion the
      O-idiot want’s to raise us to. In fact I think the taxes are a tad high, but will allow for paying the debt off faster.

      Too simple ?
      They won’t do it because it actually is GOOD for the very people they are scareing about checks going out, yet they can bail the effin bankers for what 1.2 trillion ? (tarp & stim I)

      I have never been so angry about words out of Obama’s mouth than when I heard his scare tactic for seniors that they may not receive their August check. I was boiling! What a heartless, lying, manipulating excuse for a human Obama is! I began calling elderly people (poor) in my neighborhood and asked if they heard it. I reassured them he is playing political games. I also said, “If you don’t get your check, let me know. I’ll help you. Don’t worry about these false threats.” Many were grateful I called. I’m still angry. What a sorry president Obama is!

      I think it is a fine irony that the people who STOLE all the money from the Social Security trust fund are now threatening to withhold SS payments unless they get a blank check to spend.; Excuse me, but if they had not stolen all that money and filled the “box” with “govt. IOUs”, paying out SS checks would not be in question, now would it?

      Whoever wrote that Obama decides who gets paid is sadly mistaken. It is in the constitution that the handling of money is decided by the house of representatives. I wish that people would get their facts straight before making comments. The treasury has enough money to take care of the nations bills for quite a while before there is any major ramifications. All the non-entitlement spending would go away before the entitlement spending would. This means that the “pork” spending would be gone. Also, the constitution states that the govt. is responsible for the debt first before anything else.

      Social Security IS SELF-FUNDING, folks!!!

      The money to PAY social security comes from a specific deduction and is meant to be ‘lock boxed’ for social security.

      If obama REFUSES to pay social security, it is because he would rather TAKE the social security INCOME and SPEND IT on programs to enrich his big campaign donors!

      If obama refuses to pay social security OUT OF SOCIAL SECURITY, he is STEALING SOCIAL SECURITY MONEY to give it to other people!!

      obama and his DC buddies have stolen the money from social security for so long, they have COMPLETELY forgotten that it is not theirs to do with as they please!!!

      I went to the store yesterday, and everyone was talking about this, and very worried about how they would get by. I thought to myself, looks like his scare tactic is working, but then I heard the anger, how they have cut back to the bone, and now he wants to take everything from them. What I took away is now they know he is not the President for the people. He reminds me of a bully, if he can’t get his way someone is going to get hurt.

      @hifi74 Yes SS is solvent but Congress has been borrowing from it for decades, so it really doesn’t have any cash. Similar to Medicare it is handled by fund accounting. From an accounting standpoint it has money, but in reality holds a bunch of IOUs from the government.

      If the income tax were rolled back and the highest income bracket paid 3% more per year to be used to decrease the debt, the savings from the decrease in inflation would be greater than 3%. It would be a good investment.

      If it comes to a “default” then of course the old and feeble should be denied their government checks from Social Security. Things like Family Planning abortion factories should remain open so the murder of unborn babies won’t be at risk. Agencies like the ATF would be short of funds to by and give guns to Mexican drug cartels so they could kill government agents if it’s funds were stopped.

      The TRUTH is, Social Security funds have been “borrowed” for years to fund social projects that have absolutely no value to American taxpayers. The “wealth” has been spread around for generations and the current administration has increased the process of taking from the haves to give to the have nots.Our government has over 1500 diferent agencies, most could be closed permanentlyly without in loss or in convinience to the taxpayers .But withholding Social Security checks is a larger card to play in the game of political poker.

      He’s admitting to much more than lying. According to Obama and the rest of the Democrats, when W was President and pushing for Social Security reform, Social Security was in NO trouble at all and in no need of reform. (Remember the Dems reaction to Bush’s mention of SS reform during the 2005 State of the Union speech?) But NOW under Obama Social Security is SO broke we have to borrow money just to send out the checks next month. He’s not admitting to lying. Gosh no! The Dems didn’t lie when W was Pres. He’s admitting that in 2 and a half years he pissed away ALL the money in the lock box. So what if we DO raise the debt ceiling to fund SS this year…what about next year? Will we have to raise it again? And the year after that? Question: Mr. President, what assurances can you give the American people that you won‘t piss away next year’s money like you pissed away the SS fund? Will SS EVER be solvent?

      I still stand by my belief that this has nothing to do with the money. I think the money is there as well. Michele Bachman on the news last night said there would be no reason to withhold SS or Veteran payments.

      I think this has everything to do with making Republicans look like the villains. Dems are acting like they’re so concerned about Seniors getting their checks. When you know nothing would make them happier than to send a letter out to Seniors saying it‘s the Republicans fault that they didn’t get paid.

      Remember when Dems and Libs. mocked Seniors in the Tea Party events calling them a “Bunch of Old White Racists” now all of a sudden their so concerned about them. Bottom line, they know Seniors vote in large numbers. Where as Dems. base, (poor underclass people) don’t. Every time there is a budget shortfall the first thing that must be cut are the police and fire departments at the local level, never do they suggest that library hours be shortened or the public pools be closed one day of the week. We MUST scare the AARP to keep them in line. How about we stop flying missions in Libya, that might save a few bucks. But, we’re not “professional politicians” so we must not fully understand.

    That sob CAN guarantee that social security checks will be paid!
    The government will still have $200 billion a month coming in and payments can and should be prioritized in a fashion causing the least suffering. Debts will be paid.
    But obama will push it as long as he can to torture us and blame those evil teabaggers.
    What will have to happen will be a drastic reduction in unnecessary federal expenses.
    The republicans must shove it back in his face and if he chooses to “punish” any group of people, or even threaten to do so, then he will be forced to “own” his obamconomy and even the lamest dems will see him and his ilk for their true intentions.

      Well, I’ve been calling him “that evil little puppet” for some time now. The way he came out of nowhere and zoomed straight to the top–it is obvious he is a tool of some other entity who engineered his election. The man can’t even form a coherent sentence without a teleprompter.

      Remember the big flap about Iran, and how reporters kept asking him questions about it? His answers? Variations on: “Oh, no time to talk about Iran–gotta coach my daughter’s basketball game!” That was because he had not yet been told what to say, and did not have a CLUE how to answer!

      It is painfully obvious that he is nothing more than a clueless puppet who is happy to be used by the evil SOBs pulling his strings, in exchange for being on TV, riding around in Cadillac limos and Air Force One, etc. etc. Leadership? Hah! This fool could not lead anybody anywhere, unless somebody wrote him a script and drew him a picture!

He wants this country bankrupt so he can rebuild it as a Socialist Marxist country, i am after 40 years of working in my pipe fitting trade now on disability, and im telling the republicans to stand there ground !! The world will not end the government will not cease to function and old people and disabled people will not die if the debt ceiling is not raised ! In fact they should lower the ceiling and STOP spending billions on other countries problems. STAND your ground !!

      They took our money to build nice underground bunkers so they can go to them and leave us here to fend for ourselves. FEMA takes good care of them. Where did all the money go?       Well Gosh Golly Darn!! I guess my old man was right when he told me 50+ years ago, “You’ll never see a dime of the Socialist Security Money they are gonna steal from you. Guess it’s a Good Thing I listened to him, and beat the Thieving Money Jews out of every penny, every way I could. I hope this “Ethiopian in the Fuel Supply” does stop paying Socialist Security Receipients, then we could call for a movement for all Retiree’s to go out and shoot at least one Food Stamp Drone, Govt. Union Slug, or Foreign Aid Receipient, and then use that “New Revenue” money to pay somebody that actually WORKED at least a little in their life.
