Obama: I Could Use My Status to Get Special Treatment for My Kids

In response to an audience question during a recent NBC interview, President Obama admitted that he sends his children to private school instead of the “struggling” D.C. public schools. That’s despite the fact that he claims, given his status and position, he could “maneuver” it so that his children could get into any public school of his choice:

The D.C. public schools are so bad that even the president won’t pull strings to get his children into them.

So what’s the root of the problem? Are those schools bad because of poor teachers who are being protected by the unions? Possibly — Obama admits that some unions are resistant to change. But in the interview he said he would rather not “impose” anything on the unions, because teachers have to “feel good” in order to do a good job:

Feel good? I thought being a teacher was feeling good in itself by helping kids.

In Rochester New York, the public schools there put the nasty, vulgar rapper 50 cent on the book reading list. You’ve got to be kidding me….we pay enormous pensions and health benefits so they can decide to funnel this garbage to kids?? A black minister from Rochester was on Fox this morning very upset about it. Liberal schools response-we want the kids to engage in debate and opposing views. Uhm….no, they will go out and emulate the behavior. How many kids, really, give a crap about morals and debating serious social issues! Its called TEACHING not “if it FEELS GOOD DO IT.”

Hey guys, remember that teachers have to follow what the administration, both at their school, then at the district office, and then at the school board tell them to do. When they tie our hands behind our back and countermand our authority in our classrooms so that we can’t discipline the students and the students know this we are in serious trouble. When they dictate what has to be taught and we have to teach to the test we are in serious trouble. When they follow what the liberal politicians tell them to do, we are in serious trouble. I would love to be able to have control over my classroom, but all it takes to derail the entire room is for one student to get vindictive over being disciplined and get the parent to complain. I have never seen administration kowtow lower than to a screaming parent who is enabling her child to be defiant in the classroom. And when I‘m told I can’t do anything about it, well, there you go. The reason we don’t have educated kids is because the kids are running the system because of enabler parents and invertebrate administrators and school board members who just want to do their politicking. And the system of how many chances they get is absolutely incredible. And the steps are repeated each time the student does it again.

I would agree with that ATEACHER….and empathize with you and all the other “common sense” teachers out there. But you have to admit, yours is not a widespread point of view. There are lots of teachers (liberal progressives) than are perfectly okay with all the WRONG things going on in there…. In my opinion, a kid gets out of line, he / she should get a foot right in the !@ass ! Like we did, years ago. I used to tell teachers that if my kids gave them any trouble, kick them in the butt !! I didn’t dare come home and tell my father when a teacher cuffed me, why ?? I would have received a lot worse from my father, period !!! Discipline has been taken away,…..you could probably attribute that to ACLU and other progressive liberal entities that CONTINUE to warp and destroy our once great nation !!! Sometimes, common sense has to prevail, in fact, a lot of times…. Liberals don’t have the ability to equate the importance of common sense rationalizing…they are incapable….

I am married to a teacher, and I also taught school for several years before deciding to stay home with my kids while they are young. The greatest thing I learned from my years of teaching is how to NOT be an idiot parent.

NFYRx hit the nail on the head,
“By the way, for a teacher to get through a child must be taught to respect authority, me (be?) motivated, do their work, show up…BY THEIR PARENTS. They’ve already failed by age 4. NO ONE WILL SAY THIS PUBLICLY.”

I am all for holding teachers responsible, and making it easier to fire the crappy ones. And I think the unions are a joke.

But if you haven’t ever taught you have NO IDEA what teachers have to deal with. I get so tired of hearing people make broad generalizations in criticizing teachers. Yes there are some crappy ones. But the vast majority are doing the best they can in circumstances stacked against them.

A student once student asked me “What, are you f-ing deaf? When I wrote him up, my administrator wouldn’t do anything about it. He sent the smug arrogant kid back to class, with the message to all kids that that kind of behavior was ok. The principal told me that it would have been different if the kid had said “F_ _ _ you”. I don’t care if he uses the word as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb. Talking to a teacher like that should have consequences. This principal regularly let things like this slide, because it was easier than having to deal with the parents. How on earth is a teacher supposed to maintain a learning environment with conditions like that? You would be surprised at the lack of support from parents and administrators, and the crap they deal with from kids. So cut teachers some slack.

And don’t talk to me about paid vacations, when teachers take hours of work home with them every night AND spend time in their classrooms in the summer and over holidays. By the way, where I live they pay a teacher with a masters degree and six years experience $34k! And FYI, most school districts give you the option of spreading your payment over 10 months or 12. Teachers are not paid for the summer months. They just have the option of receiving smaller payments and spreading them out all year for budgeting purposes.

So unless you have walked in a teacher’s shoes, quit being so critical. Save your criticism for specific teachers you know are doing a poor job, and quit trying to vilify all teachers.

As a fellow teacher, I am not in the business of making money. I feel good about teaching only when my students learn and experience success through responsibility and independence of solving their own problems. That should be the point of school. However, most people who make decisions about schools: a) never taught in a classroom, b) left teaching because they despised some students and the system, and c) left teaching to move up the educational bureaucracy, so they don’t have to work with students and the everyday problems each student encounters. I love my job, yet the politics are horrendous and pathetic.

Gee……. I have an idea…… Let’s get all the text books from 40 years ago and start there. Let’s stop indocrinating our children, let’s teach them about the founding fathers and real history so that they can assess and decide what is right and what is wrong. Let’s teach them basic math skills, let’s teach them vocabulary skills, let’s TEACH THEM !! Let’s make them test out and receive the grades they earn. Let’s not “personalize” testings so that we can continue to “make people feel good” about earning an “A” or “A-” when they should have received a D or an F. What the heck is going on ? I’ll tell you what it looks like; it looks like a contrived effort to DUMB DOWN THE PUBLIC !!! If not, then it’s just bureaucratic incompetence…….but probably a combination of both…. Again, big government, big problems and big disastrous results !!!! Bye bye socialists, just a little while longer folks…can’t wait to kick them all to the curb, PERMANENTLY this time !!!!!!!!111

They get bigger raises more benefits and, most outrageously, generous retirement packages that are paid for by you and me. That’s right, the average American has to foot the bill to the tune of billions of dollars for the state entitlement packages for unions. Both my parents are teachers and they refuse to join the unions. This is why. Greedy sycophants that only take care of themselves. Democrats claim to care about the children; my question to the unions is what about the education YOU are providing our children? Unions protect lazy worthless teachers while our children underachieve versus other countries in math, science and reading etc. Do you really care about the children? School choice.
By the way the most under reported wasteful expense in the education industry? Schoolbooks. The most Marxist and idiotic ideas now coming home from newly indoctrinated children is only the beginning of the outrage for parents. It costs hundreds of dollars each year PER STUDENT to bring in the newest and the best in liberal and Marxist propoganda to indoctrinate our children. The lefty people in charge of education are supporting a massive leftist propoganda machine that gets to rewrite our history and poison the minds of our children on the backs of taxpayers. I am a retired teacher. I went back to college when I was forty-ish to get my education degree because I was appalled at the way my children were being taught and wanted to know why teachers do the things they do. Most of what I objected to was correct, but I ate some of my words. I came up with this ridiculous statement, but at the same time true. Every parent should be a teacher before becoming a parent, and every teacher should be a parent before becoming a teacher. The average person has no idea what a teacher does/does not do today. The classroom is nothing like it was in the past. It would be better if it were, in my opinion. Language skills suffer enormously at an elementary level, mostly because the cart is put before the horse. Just look at the grammatical and spelling errors on blogs. Some are typos, but many are not. Then when children reach middle school, teachers are amazed at how ill-prepared they are. There is never enough time to teach things the way it is set up today, but everyone wants art, music, gym, etc. When I was young, I was lucky if we colored a pumpkin ditto sheet for art, but it didn’t stop me from first majoring in art. Why are there resources? Mostly because teachers want/need a planning period and people have become convinced they are critical on an elementary level. Then all the diruptions that happen during a normal school day are unreal! There are so many misconceptions about schools and teaching, and no one addresses the problems that need to be addressed–too controversial. I disagreed left and right with colleagues about many things, and I laugh today about how many of my arguments are now, finally, coming to light and are being accepted. I was furious yesterday when a NY union teacher on Sunday FOX said that the right-to-work states, like Virginia, has some of the poorest outcomes. LIE! Virginia has some of the toughest standards in the nation and ranks #4 on SAT scores! The insinuation was that unionized states do better because they are union. I sent a request to the BLAZE to do a follow up story about her comment, but so far, nothing. There are so many different educational philosophies and so many problems. But beware of fork-tongued Obama.

That’s how i raise my kids and they are doing awesome in public school. Our teachers are even in a union. The importance of involved parents cannot be overestimated. Unreal that TEACHERS are being attacked by the right when they should be attacking the lazy ass parents who don’t know what the heck the kids are doing. There goes that rotten capitalism again. Sending your kids to private school when so many poor children are in public schools. Maybe, in accordance with his definition of transformation, he should switch putting his kids in the public school and the public school kids in private school Yeah right???

Why did the Obama Education Department eliminate the Vouchers for Washingtonn DC minority kids? The kids on the vouchers did better than the kids in the DC public schools. I guess when it comes to a conflict with the DC Teachers Union and doing the right thing for the minority kids, the union wins and the kids lose.

These people need to go–the sooner the better.

His arrogance will be his undoing. He is certainly the least presidential executive our nation has ever had. Coupled with his complete lack of experience and inability to perform the job, he is a national embarrassment.

By the way, for a teacher to get through a child must be taught to respect authority, me motivated, do their work, show up…BY THEIR PARENTS.
They’ve already failed by age 4. NO ONE WILL SAY THIS PUBLICLY.

Considering the one of the strong staff members of the DC system has been speaking out on a clip on Fox News, is it any wonder our robotic prez has chosen private over the pathetic DC system! It has been a terrible system since as far back as I can remember and I’m no spring chicken. Once the unions added “teachers” to their list of members, our public schools have hit rock bottom! I loved my job but I knew whay my wonderful schools would become as the unions moved in and retired early giving up the best job anyone could ever want with the best kids I could ever ask for as a teacher. I’ve watched the disaster of failing schools get worse each year. The school closest to me had terrible results on the exams last year—because of the quality of students, it should have been amongst the top in the district. I’ve told everyone either “home school” your children or get them into a private school. The private schools in my area have waiting lists because public schools have become so bad—–THANK YOU UNIONS FOR DESTROYING WHAT WAS ONCE THE GREATEST EDUCATION IN THE WORLD, RIGHT HERE IN THE GOOD OLD USA!
